Big-Name Bucs Sit Out Practice

September 27th, 2023

Vita Vea.

Four defensive players earning eight-figure salaries didn’t get through full practice today at One Buc Palace.

Ouch! That’s a lot of Team Glazer loot in the trainer’s room.

Devin White (groin), Jamel Dean (shoulder) and Vita Vea (pectoral) all sat out practice today. Keep in mind it was a relatively light session after a Monday night game.

No. 1 cornerback Carlton Davis was “limited,” still dealing with his Week 1 toe injury.

Also out was rookie first-round pick Calijah Kancey (calf), and fifth-round pick SirVocea Dennis (hamstring).

Bowles told the Buccaneers Radio Network this week that White will do everything in his power to play this week. That’s not exactly a sign White’s groin healing is trending well.

  1. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs Defense is hurting badly. You could see Vita was only about 50% against the Eagles. Not sure we can get by the Saints without Vita, Davis, White and Dean. An early bye week might be great for us. Another hard game this Sunday Buc fans.

  2. unbelievable Says:

I don’t see how a groin can possibly heal from 5 day of rest.

It’s really just going to come down to whether they can give him enough pain killers while stilling allowing him to run around and be more effective than his backup would be.

Him and Vea will be dealing with these injuries all season if they don’t miss games. Either scenario is terrible for our defense.

  3. Kidfloflo Says:

Were gonna have to win this game with back ups and an aggressive offensive game plan! Then the bye should bring most back, and hopefully including Kancey. We can’t rely on a piss poor clock eating run attack, this game is huge! Win and heal up

  4. Allbuccedup Says:

Should have hired a new conditioning coach there always seems to be 4 or 5 starters always injured.

  5. donuts Says:

I am pretty sure Vea sat out v Eagles too.

  6. JimBobBuc Says:

I liked allbucced up idea to get new conditioning coaches. Maybe Joe or DR could look at our injury reports over the last few years and compare to other teams. We certainly had more hurt guys than the iggles

  7. Boss Says:

I said before the season started the D was in for hurt, but I didn’t want to be right.

    WTF is with the rookie!

  8. J Says:

Bowles played him hurt, he got more hurt, he wasn’t effective after the INT, you play him on 2 goal line stands hurt, and now Bowles thinks he’s gonna be 100% by Sunday. Who’s smoking the crack here?

  9. MelvinJunior Says:

Yeah, donut… I don’t know how many snaps he played in total, but it sure wasn’t many. I kept an eye on it, too… Every time I looked up he wasn’t in there, especially on those runs with gaping holes. I’m like, “WHERE’S VEA!?” Then, I look up again, and still not in… EVEN, on first and second downs. He’s never played very many ‘snaps’ hidden entire career seemingly, and always hurt with something. I was always, in the camp of keeping Him, Devin, & Junior to build the future of our defense around… Gives you three future strong leaders, one on each level of the D!!!! But, I’m no longer in that camp with him… I think you’ve gotta move off of him for next season’s LOADED Draft Class. He’s definitely, replaceable… And just a year or so ago, I didn’t think he would so easily be. There’s several REAL STRONG DT’s in college right now… FULL of ‘em!!!! That position group is waaayyy on the uptick, too… They’re getting much more athletic, bigger, & faster now, every year. I’m pretty sure he’ll be 2025, but that kid at Kentucky right now, is A MONSTER!!!! Straight-up Dominate as just a Freshman in THE SEC last season. An ANIMAL. There’re at least, a handful more of HIM playing college right now!!!!

  10. Slacker Says:

All banged up and just happens to be very key players. Suppose the offensive plan this week is to run, run, third and long, punt. No rest for the defense. As much as they want to establish the run game, they are so far from being built to do it.

  11. BucU Says:

    The brittle Bucs strike again.

  12. Infomeplease Says:

Next man up year after year! WTF! At least we have our starting QB! That could be the difference.

  13. Hodad Says:

They need the rest more than the practice.

  14. 1#bucsfan Says:

As much as we need them let ‘em sit then they also get the bye week and hopefully are all healed up after that

  15. Pelsbuc61 Says:

When Carlton Davis said “we’re gonna wreck some sh&t” he meant the training room. The TAmpa Bay China dolls strike again. Saints 31 Bucs 13.

  16. Mike S Says:

Kancey sitting out is more of a business decision than an actual injury. LOL

  17. Justin parker Says:

It just seems like every year the same guys are hurt. It gets old. Maybe bigger and stronger instead of quicker and weaker is a bettwr way to go. Just ask the Eagles if thats a winning strategy.

  18. Wild Bill Says:

It’s very troubling when an opposing back runs full speed right up the middle of the Bucs without being touched for 15 or 20 yards. Happened more than once.

  19. Obvious Says:

Im starting to feel like when Carlton Davis stated “we’re gonna wreck some chit”, he didn’t realize that what he actually meant was “Train Wreck some Chit” with what seems to be the majority of the defense busted up on the sidelines. And with the game on the line Sunday, we may potentially be T boned by the Pain Train.. Clearly a division win that we Need.

Seems we start this way Every Year! Injuries seem to come in Dozens around here!

Hopefully we pay the FULL PRICE NOW and the rest of the season is Not us “rail roaded” by the Chronic Injury Bug! Seems it’s ALL up to the second and third stringers right now. Coaching IS at a PREMIUM and All the hat tricks BETTER BE on display in N.O. Or Else!

  20. NCalBucsfan Says:

It’s just not the Bucs….Based on the “logic” of firing trainers due to injuries, I give you the following teams that must need new trainers:
Green Bay, jets, giants, raiders, saints, Browns, lions, Dolphins, Rams,Broncos, Eagles, Niners, Patriots, Bills, Bengals, Cowboys, Titans, Jags, Ravens….
That’s just off the top of my head, basically half of the NFL have stars or multiple starters that are injured or out for the season, and it’s just week 3…
It’s a violent sport, played by big fast people, who often disregard their health for their teammates and our entertainment. I’ve learned to give them some slack.

  21. Nate Says:

This is such a powder puff league now its because of the weak practices there bodies can’t handle the grind now

  22. Sly Pirate Says:

    Hodad Says:
They need the rest more than the practice.

    ^^^^^

That right there. Think guys. You crush a 10K you need multiple days of rest. Not more training. Sitting players, game plan, and watch tape. It’s just smart.

  23. Drunkinybor Says:

One major critique I’ve had is the talent drop off if a starter gets hurt. We have more tweeks and pulls head, shoulder, knees and toes injuries than I can remember the last 3 seasons. Whites groin, Davis toe. Vita bicep, and many others. Are we seeing the Florida retirement curse. It’s work fir these dudes they probably day dreaming about thier yachts, boats, and amazing cars. Man I hope its not that. That’s why I.habe always admires Evans paid or not.paid yet he suits up. He may miss a game here or there typically but if he does it’s serious

  24. rrsrq Says:

I know this is a division game, but I would rather they all sit out and hopefully return after the bye week healthier. The offense players seem to be healthy, so put some points up.

  25. optimisticbucsfan Says:

If that is a turf toe injury…this will go on all season.

Licht picks a lot of guys that get injured a lot.

I would be ok with jettisoning Licht after the season.

Need new blood and new eyes. Without Brady, Licht would have already been fired and selling popcorn at RJS.

  26. Brandon Says:

Crazy how many know nothing dunces want to bring attention to themselves with idiotic statements about the training staff and Licht due to injuries. Every team has injuries EVERY year. Every training staff is doing pretty much the same thing for their athletes for both preventative and post injury care. Licht has done an amazing job at finding excellent players in the draft and undrafted free agency, the majority of those players have gotten injured at the regular NFL rate. One of the very few athletes that Licht has drafted that had an injury history red flag was Jamel Dean with two torn ACLs…. and as banged up as Dean has gotten as a Buc, his ACLs have never been a problem. Licht is a top GM, definitely top 10, probably top 5. Anybody that wants him to go, needs to go root for another team. Your stupidity will not be tolerated here.

  27. GumboIsForWinner Says:

Why are they always so cage. For all we know Chauncy’s ankle could have fallen off and he’s just questionable day to day. If he’s day to day for 3 full weeks, it’s not day to day. He has a serious injury. Ryan Jensen all over again.

  28. BucU Says:

Callijah Kancey is a bum. And his Pitt buddy isn’t far behind him. They’re both pathetic.
