Baker Mayfield On Pace For 3,604 Yards, 23 TDs & 6 Interceptions

September 26th, 2023

Three games into Baker Mayfield’s Buccaneers career and Joe only knows a few wacky fans that want to throw him off the pirate ship.

That’s a heck of an accomplishment, but Mayfield has done more than that.

Mayfield landed back on earth last night, making a mistake that turned into an interception and getting rattled a few times by a nasty Eagles pass rush. (Yeah, Joe saw Tristan Wirfs look mortal a couple of times. Poor guy has set such a high bar that any sign of weakness stands out.)

Mayfield has faced a great team, a miserable team, and a talented team with a home field advantage that’s still figuring itself out. It’s a small sample size but at least it’s diverse.

The Bucs’ starting quarterback has completed two thirds of his passes 62-of-93 for 636 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. That puts him on pace for a heck of a season at 23 TDs, 6 picks and 3,604 yards through the air.

Joe’s giving Mayfield a solid B+ grade overall in his short Bucs tenure. Sorry, but Joe can’t hang the miserable running game on No. 6.

Here we go Joe is protecting his guy he stunk last night just like the coach you’re always covering for he stinks. The first two weeks we had lollipops you overreacted it’s fine tell it like it is. He had 149 yards passing last night one touchdown one interception that’s not great.

  2. Bucs13 Says:

How often was the miserable run game put on Brady?

  3. Bucs13 Says:

Also, the Vikings defense is awful. Herbert had an elite game against them! Look at his numbers. He and Keenan Allen killed him. Mayfield didn’t fare as well as him against the Vikings. Oh, the Chargers were also on the road. They didn’t have their stud RB and they don’t have a Godwin. Stop making excuses for Baker.

  4. K_bassuka Says:

That would be a heck of a season for a rookie QB not an experienced QB, great leader and #1 overall Heisman winner with great talent around him.

You can see how great Maybefield is lplaying by looking at the dump pass to White that ended with a fumble. On that play there’s a receiver running wide arse open (I think Palmer) and the Maybefield missed him. The same has happened in all 3 games, Idk why Maybefield keeps on missing those.

At the end of the day Maybefield is like Fitzpatrick they give you some good performances just to turn around and play like 💩.

SMH lol man its fools gold bruh accept it, the first two games was the best he can play. He made a living checking down he tried it last night and got his teeth kicked in open your eyes when you not drinking!

  6. Onetrickpony Says:

There is enough blame to go around for everybody last night. I have to lean towards two things, they are we don’t have a running back worth of flip. The second thing is Todd Bowles defense, were on a break

  7. MiamiBuc Says:

LOL Mini Mayfield ain’t facing the Viqueens and Beers anymore.

  8. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Bitter boys bet y’all kick your dog too

  9. Mark hardt Says:

If we want to test out Baker vs Trask vs USC or Notre Dame kid we need to see what happens when the defense has decided to stack the line and stop the run. Baker threw every down in college. Try it. See what happens.

  10. Duane Says:

It’s extremely fooling to talk “on pace” based upon three games. Especially two of those games being against weak non-division opponents.

If you want to talk trend lines, again, that’s impossible considering how up and down he as been in his passing from week 1 to week 2 to week 3.

Let’s see what the pace is in early December. That’s when a pace is possibly visible, but by no means assured.

Everybody should have known before the season started that the Bucs would have good games and stinker games and in between games, and that Baker Mayfield would have good games and stinker games, and in between games.

This is a rebuilt offense, an overhauled defense, and special teams always vary a lot from year to year. Don’t try to figure out what this team can do until December at least.

In our last Super Bowl run, the Bucs were only 7-5 by early December, and not destined for the playoffs let alone the Super Bowl championship. Then the Bucs turned it on the last month of the regular season and stayed hot through the playoffs.

    And 10-11 losses

Stats are for losers and gamblers – one in the same

  12. AMI_Chris Says:

He missed a couple of big throws early. Hurts didn’t miss his throws. Mayfield is probably an average NFL QB. Bucs could win the division if they stay healthy but they don’t have the overall talent to do any damage in playoffs, if they get there. Doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a few wins this season.

  13. PewterStiffArm Says:

This team hasn’t had home field advantage in years. All the good quality teams come into RayJay and make us look extremely humble. Dallas last year and Philly last night. And oh by the way, on a national stage, to add insult to our injuries.

  14. John G Says:

Joe is spot on. Baker is a real deal.
Only concern is his holding the ball too long. He is missing the first open window. He needs to fix that. But, unlike the first two games D kept the O in the game. Just couldn’t do it against Philly with the O being so stifled. Whole different game if Mr. Evans was able to pull that 1st quarter touchdown in. Philly would have had to be more honest with the Bucs run game.

  15. Watch More ALL22 Before Commenting Says:

I rewatched the game last night on NFL+ condense, Mayfield and the passing offense looked much better than I felt it did live.

The real problem is Canales and play calling and the timing and nature of the run calls.

There is no rhythm to the offense and running to pass isn’t working. The best runs of the night came after the passing game got open.

Mayfield should be throwing 40+ times a night, a variety of short quick passes and deeper shots. This will open up Play Action and mid to outside zone runs.

White is also not as much a liability on halfback screens.

Also, where were the rollouts and waggles? There was one rollout to the left and not one to the right that I could recall (possibly because of the line collapse).

  16. Bojim Says:

Need a RB badly. One that can run up the middle. Or break tackles etc.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

I have no problems with Matfield. Had Brady been the QB, the Iggles would have had 8 sacks.

Outside one INT—which was not an ATM-like oskie—he’s played well and with that “grit” or “moxie” everyone talks about.

His mobility kept the game at seal-clubbing level instead of Nagasaki melt-down destruction.

Stiff-Arm did not lose that game last night. The OL and DL did.

That said, I am not convinced Canales is a great playcaller.

  18. pmarcello Says:

Enough with the Baker bashing cheap shots. The only thing that stinks here is your troll breath getting blown back in your troll mugs. Last night was not Baker fault. Also a los in eptember means nothing. Baker will exceed these projections easily. There is no college QB out there as good as him. Unless you ubscribe to the fake new racist hype schills. The rest of the team will come along if they get a chance to heal. Maybe a running back that can get to the hole faster and break some tackles. The tight ends need to catch the ball. Early inthe game Baker tends to get a little hyped and throw the ball a little too hard. It would help if ME would catch some of the early drops. Be talking a different game then. Might help to let Baker drop back and throw deep on 1sr down instead of thoxe predictable runs into the wall. Canales needs to take more advantage of Bakers arm. Take the top off the defence early and make therm respect the deep threat. Got more news for you trolls. Brady would have had his legs broken by that pass rush last knight ditto for trask. No time to panic yet. Can;t tell you how many times I watched the Steelers start slow in Sept and October and then tear up the league in Nov and december and January. Yeah of little faith get lost we don;t need you or want to hear from you.

  19. Show Me the TDs Says:

Dang, I could have swore I just read an article, “Good Players Don’t Need Excuses”.

  20. D-Rome Says:

3,604 yards is not good enough anymore. 4,000 yards is the floor if you want to win and/or build around a QB, especially without a running back.

  21. Upstate NY BUC Says:

    JONATHAN TALOR IMMEDIATELY……

  22. Bucs13 Says:

@Cobra. Brady would not have taken eight sacks. He wins with his brains and he’s not gonna take many negative plays.

  23. The Dave Says:

By this mathematical logic we’re also going to finish 11-6. That wasn’t an 11-6 team on their home field last night.

  24. UKBuccaneer Says:

Not sure I’ve ever seen a fanbase flip-flop quite like the bucs fans do.

Don’t get too high. Don’t get too low. This team was never meant to contend this year, and the iggles are a SB candidate.

  25. Couch Fan Says:

3600 yards and 23 TDs is a heck of a season? WoW our standards have drastically lowered.

  26. Posey99 Says:

“3600 yards and 23 TDs is a heck of a season? WoW our standards have drastically lowered.”

Exactly. Joe trying not to gun shunned by mayfield because he reads articles?

  27. optimisticbucsfan Says:

The 1st two opponents were straight up trash.

This was a real measuring stick.

    We failed…spectacularly.

  28. Steelers fan Says:

Philly wasnt a good team vrs QB’s they were the WORST vrs QB’s.

Yet you throw White under the bus and Philly has the best Run D in the league?

White is a very good RB and will be here way after Baker is gone.

    Mac Jones vrs Egals 35/54 316yds 3td 1int

    Kirk Cousins 31/44 364yds 4td

    Baker Mayfield 15/25 146yds 1td 1int

The egals were dead last vrs qbs coming into the game and #1 vrs the run.

  29. Ex-Browns02 Says:

It’s frustrating to watch a game in which your team is totally over-powered by the opposition. Any critique of Bucs performance last night would be woefully incomplete if it doesn’t acknowledge our misses in all phases of the game. Baker certainly had his misses as did our receivers. It’s hard to fault your RBs if the OL cannot create running lanes. Our defense gave a 100% effort, but the defensive play calling allowed for way too many soft coverages, especially in the second half – giving up too many easy first downs and forfeiting time-of-possession. How about the 3rd and 10 Philly faced with 5:30 remaining? Our CB was playing 12 yard off the ball at the snap? That made absolutely no sense as at that point as it really didn’t matter if the receiver got behind the CB. How many yards did we give up because of missed tackles? And special teams? They really got run over. Last night was a total team loss to a really good opponent. We’re going to see improved performance going forward. We were actually fortunate to face the Eagles this early in the schedule.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Those are pretty good stats for 1987.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

Bowles LOVES this, as he said, the most important thing he wants from a QB, isn’t a guy that moves the ball or scores points, no, he wants a guy that doesn’t turn it over. And sure, 3600 yards and 23 TDs hasn’t been an impressive line in 30-years, the 6 INTs is all Bowles cares about. So keep that up, and Bowles will demand that Licht makes Mayfield the highest paid QB in football!

  32. TB Bolts Says:

Baker cannot see. He looked panicky and lost last night. No vision. The throws he did make were off target half the time. He either bounces back against the saints or we go into the break seriously considering Trask. Give the 6’5 guy who has worked his butt off a chance. Baker and his moxie will get them nowhere.

  33. Why Not Says:

If this were 1982, those numbers would get Mayfield in the Pro Bowl. However, in today’s NFL, those numbers are pedestrian. If we had a rushing attack like the 2020 Browns, I would say the pedestrian numbers are the product of a balanced and run focused offense. We have no rushing attack, so Mayfield (or Trask) will need to be more prolific throwing the ball. It won’t happen.

  34. Red Says:

Last night the defense got wore down due to the lopsided time of possession. Also there were a couple of drops that threw a wrench in extending some drives. The offense is not balanced well which does not bode well for any QB in year one of a new system to them. Luckily Baker has been part of many different offenses in his career.

  35. EcoBoost Says:

Nobody wants Baker Mayfield, he’s a backup at bare minimum. I see maybe six wins maybe, luckily cars hurt or that would be another loss watch jameis come in and put one on us

  36. Joe Browns Says:

Comments are just opinions it’s like assholes we all have one! BAKE is 1player on a football team there are 22 plus special teams ..punt ,kickoff, punt return, kickoff return.. DROPS aren’t counted on QB stats … coaches call plays in the ear speaker inside A QB helmet.. any decent QB can have good and bad games Defense Also doesn’t go against a QBstats …I have great respect for BAKE and I am a lifelong BROWNS fan DWATSON is doing just about the same also tipped balls and balls that go off a Receivers hands still go against the QBs stats .. Idiots who don’t know football criticize QBs!!! it’s a TEAM SPORTwin with a TEAM and Lose with a TEAM! that said I believe THE BROWNS were stupid they had BAKE for35 million a year less than DWatson and took the 5th yr option for 18 million 2weeks before selling out our 1st picks till 2027 for the same stats BUCS fans should be thanking the LORD for BAKE. they don’t have the team to make a real playoff run…..BAKE may very well help them get there.
