The Brewing Chris Godwin Question

September 26th, 2023

Chris Godwin’s streak of 17 consecutive games of five catches or more was broken tonight.

Godwin had 3 catches for 32 yards against the Eagles, and Godwin has 13 catches for 141 yards this season and no touchdowns.

Can anyone recall Baker Mayfield taking a deep shot to Godwin?

Unlike the past four seasons, Godwin is playing more outside receiver this year as the stud 1b to Mike Evans’ 1a, but the results have been unspectacular.

Godwin is damn good and looks healthy and has made a few plays. So why aren’t the Bucs getting more out of him? Especially for the $20 million he’s hauling in from Team Glazer this season?

Job No. 1 this week for Todd Bowles and his playcaller, Dave Canales, should be to figure out how to get more out of their best offensive players. The running game is stuck in the mud, but Godwin and Evans sure don’t appear be.

Joe isn’t alarmed now, but if Godwin has another nothing-special game on Sunday, Joe is going to start wondering what’s going on. He’s too good to only produce like Russell Gage was supposed to.

Not a no.1 receiver which is what ive been saying the last 4 years or so. Go ahead don’t pay mike you’ll see

  2. Tye Says:

Hopefully the Bucs got a good look tonight at how important a good run game is while the ball got ran down their throat…
Fix the o-line while they are at it…. Geeeesh!

  3. Knucknbuc Says:

Mike has showed he’s a no1 receiver what has Godwin? Same with Jamel dean that’s the problem with Jason licht pays ppl before he knows if they can hold up or not this is coming from a guy that likes cg. But he’s a no2 a great one at that. Mike evans can’t have an off game tonight showed that especially with a team like this. Mike is the guy he’s the engine no one is worried about cg beating then mike on the other hand you can’t have that happen. Mike has to be better for this team to go…

  4. T. McGee Says:

Underutilized talent. Was open in endzone and his QB sucked tonight.

  5. Sly Pirate Says:

Baker is trying to get Mike (and himself) paid.

  6. unbelievable Says:

Yup- 2 plays in a row that Baker was late. First to Godwin (caught out of bounds) and then to Evans (too late and DB had enough time to come back and tip it).

Also had about 5 run calls that should have been passed… and Chris could have been a target. We just didn’t have enough plays tonight. And Godwin was also covered a bunch downfield. Prob needs to be in the slot more often.

  7. Bojim Says:

Agree. Put him back in the slot.

  8. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    Because Baker is terrible

  9. Proudbucsfan Says:

Exactly Godwin is money in the slot put Palmer outside.

  10. Hodad Says:

Bucs didn’t have the ball enough on offense to get any one player going. The other thing is, Godwin is not an outside receiver, he’s better in the slot. Palmer is the guy who needs to be taking the top off the defense. His route tree should be all deep go routes.

  11. Bucs13 Says:

I don’t mind playing Godwin at the X. He’s shown he could play outside. Baker always gets locked on one guy. Brady was more of a spread it around type of a guy. You fans were the ones hollering about wanting Evans to take all of the targets. This is what you get. Godwin wasn’t himself last year, but he looks much healthier this year. He deserves more targets.

  12. Rymer529 Says:

The Bucs need a running back, what they have sucks. One or two yards per carry doesn’t cut it.

  13. Pewter Power Says:

Don’t know what’s going on with Canales but he’s starting to annoy me

How is it you’re clearly scheming up plays for deven thompkins but leaving the top 3 receivers out there to just hope they win their matchups

  14. orlbucfan Says:

What’s with the runs up the middle when the opposing defense stops them every time? C’mon, Canales, that’s on you. You do NOT play predictable with a heavyweight team. You fool them. Where were sweeps and screens? Why do we NEVER see them called? Leftwich pulled the same crap. I hate it.

  15. MP Says:

Honestly after 3 games, Canales has to make a choice. Design and call plays for the players you have, or keep calling plays for players you don’t. This team is not ready to run the ball. The line can push to run. The backs are not able to get through the line. That safety proved it without a doubt. Of all the plays to call… a quick slant, a play action crossing route… no. We chose to run right up the middle and the same result as always. This isn’t Seattle Mr. Canales. Play to your strengths. Don’t become another Leftwich. We don’t have an up the middle back. You need one? GO GET ONE!

  16. Obvious Says:

    O it WAS on Canales… He’s scheming the plays…

HOWEVER… Mayfield can’t seem to spread the ball. It’s Mike or nothing is what it looks like.

The play calling just WASN’T THERE! Felt a whole lot like Leftwich last night. WHAT WAS CANALES THINKING????? WHAT KIND OF AN IDIOT REPEATEDLY RUNS IT UP THE MIDDLE AND OR HAS NO CREATIVITY AGAINST THE BEST RUN DEFENSE IN FOOTBALL??? WELL LEFTWICH! AND NOW CANALES!

BUDDY JUST DUDDED OUT! IT REALLY FELT LIKE LEFTWICH CAME BACK….

  17. larrd Says:

I can’t recall the Bucs throwing deep to anyone but Evans this year. They need to take more shots.

  18. Wild Bill Says:

One of Baker’s problems is that he comes out in the first quarter way too tight and overthrows open receivers. By the second quarter he settles down but by then the Eagles have romped and stomped and already established dominance. The Bucs were beat worse than the score indicated. No pass rush, no offense, no anything really. The Bucs are a good middle of the road team. The Eagles have dominate lines, both on offense and defense, and a very speedy running back who made Buc defenders look SLOW!

  19. Bucs96NYC Says:

This is dumb to suggest Godwin isn’t a #1. Not being utilized as one & that needs to change…

  20. 1#bucsfan Says:

Bucs coaches need to stop being stubborn and old school. What I mean by that is stop trying to run to set up the pass. They got it backwards. Use the pass to set up the run. 1st if all our Oline is garbage at run blocking. It’s not their Strength. They are better at pass blocking so play to their strengths. JOE says RW1 isn’t a #1 RB and you might be right but hard to run when you’re consistently hit behind the LOS and there are no holes to run thru. I will say a few times you get this guy out in space and he makes people miss. We gotta stop with this we want to run BS and play to our strengths. We got one of the best WR Duos in the league. Use them. ME13 had a bad game it happens but to only get the ball to your other playmaker 3 times is unacceptable

  21. David Says:

It is all due to Baker not being able to distribute the ball to various receivers. He missed overthrew Thompkins on the second throw of the game wide open for a TD. Then missed Chris several times while staring down Mike E.
Baker is too slow under pressure and balls
Come out late therefore no chance for other receivers to get involved in the game . Bucs got away with it in first two games and it caught up with Baker last night . He sucks .

  22. Brandonbucc Says:

Evans had three drops. He need to be traded. White cannot run the ball, let’s stop pretending he can.

  23. Brandonbucc Says:

White tip-toes behind the line, which is why he’s hit in the backfield. He needs to hit the hole.

  24. Vern Says:

Put Chris back in the slot and make him and Mike part of the game plan and everything else will take care itself. It’s a sample game for our opponents: stop our running game and keep the QB in the pocket and see if he can beat them. Our QB must roll out the pocket the throw successfully and set up some screen plays to help out the offense line.

  25. garro Says:

Could be Rah Rah Canales does not have a clue how to use him?

    Go Bucs!

  26. Oak Says:

I was so embarrassed for the defense. I don’t know what Bowles was thinking. From the looks of it though, it appears that he told the linebackers and secondary to run away from the ball carriers instead of toward them.

  27. Pete Says:

It’s one loss. We’re fine…as long as we continue to make improvements. I’m counting on that.

  28. BAKERSBucs Says:

The 1 play that blew my mind was when they stopped eagles on 1 yd line takeover at the 1 yard line & try to run up the middle wtf was that that killed the whole game 2 point safety, this team can be very good baker did not suck he got no help we were missing 2 1st string starters they needed everybody that nite the eagles did not have a very good 1st 2 games they were bound to have a good game they were do it was our not so great day let’s support they with positivity Sunday those eagles have had several years together as a squad we have had a few months wtf be positive for the bucs
