Gameday Tampa Bay

September 25th, 2023

Game 3

Eagles at Bucs

Kickoff: 7:15 p.m.

TV: ABC (WFTS-TV Channel 28, locally) with Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Lisa Salters.

Streaming: ESPN+, NFL+ and Buccaneers.com (Geographic restrictions apply).

Radio: Buccaneers Radio Network WXTB-FM 97.9 in the Tampa-St. Petersburg region (Transmisiones de radio en español en WTMP-FM 96.1 y WMGG-AM 1470 en Tampa). Additional stations throughout Florida on the Buccaneers Radio Network can be found here. The game also will be broadcast on SiriusXM Channels 83 or 225 (Buccaneers Radio Network feed). Westwood One national feed can be found on SiriusXM Channels 104 or 227.

Weather: Decent chance of rain, per AccuWeather.com. At kickoff it should be fine but around the second quarter, there is a 51 percent chance of thunderstorms with rain the rest of the game, though the percentage drops to 47 percent in the second half. It will be warm for tailgaters with an expected temperature of 90 at 4 p.m. (Great for guzzling Big Storm Brewing beers!) This will drop to 81 in the second half and by game’s end should be in the 70s.

Odds: Per BetMGM, as of noon, Eagles -5; over/under 45.

Referees: Adrian Hill’s gang is up. In the four previous seasons Hill has been an NFL referee, he and his outfit can never be called “homer.” Only 48 percent of home teams won in games his crew worked in 2019. And that percentage has dropped each season since. Hill’s outfit tends to throw a lot of flags, seventh-most in the NFL — and the second-highest number of penalties declined in the league last season.

Injuries: Eagles — Out: RB Boston Scott (concussion), WR Quez Watkins (hamstring). Bucs — Out: LB SirVocea Dennis  (hamstring), DT Calijah Kancey (calf). Questionable: CB Carlton Davis (toe), Cody Mauch (back), DT Vita Vea (pectoral), ILB Devin White (groin).

Outlook: The Bucs are determined to run the ball with meh backs and an OK line against the best run defense in the league. Joe would utilize the team’s best weapons , the receivers. But that’s not the primary focus of Bucs coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Dave Canales. Fortunately for the Bucs, their run defense may be equal that of the Eagles. So with two teams that would rather pound the ball than use their best weapons (the Eagles have receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith) this might be a throwback game without the Kelly greens and creamsicles. With rain likely, Joe is going with the old cliché that turnovers may decide this game. If both teams don’t want to use their strengths and instead want to get into a rock fight, Joe would bet the under. The Eagles secondary is getting healthy at the worst time for the Bucs. Cornerback James Bradberry and safety Reed Blankenship are expected to start this evening. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports the Eagles will start Bradberry at nickel in an effort to match him up against Chris Godwin when possible. Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis appears to be a game-time decision.

Fun facts: The Eagles haven’t lost a road game since Christmas Eve of last year dropping a 40-34 decision to the Cowboys. … Philadelphia TE Dallas Goedert was one of the few productive Eagles players in the last meeting between the Eagles and Bucs in a wild card game two years ago. In that game Goedert had six catches for 92 yards. …  Bucs receiver Mike Evans needs five catches to record his 700th reception. Only 58 players have reached that mark in NFL history. Evans is the franchise leader in catches.

5 minutes into the game, the running commentary in the game thread will turn into DYE THE COACH, FIRE CANALES, TRADE ALL THE GOOD PLAYERS, COLLAPSE FOR CALEB!

I have no idea if the Bucs can hang with the Eagles tonight. I’d like to think they can, but my gut gives me a different feeling. This is a true test of what this Bucs team can do this year. Go Bucs!
