Tristan Wirfs With A Smooth Transition

September 22nd, 2023

The best.

Want to trigger NFL shot-callers? Mention the PFF tribe’s offensive line grades.

Joe is very, very, very fortunate to get to know and at times, work alongside (at the combine, for example) NFL scouts, coaches and shot-callers. A few years ago, Joe was chatting at a table with an NFL general manager at a watering hole in Indianapolis.

Joe mentioned the PFF tribe offensive line grades. Joe honestly thought the guy was going to fall over backward in his chair he was so wildly swinging his arms, fully outraged at what he thought was plain and simple slander that the outfit regularly manufactures about offensive linemen.

So Joe started a private poll. At the combine, Joe would try to see who among NFL scouts, coaches or suits valued the PFF tribe’s offensive line grades.

Joe couldn’t find anyone.

Most were triggered when Joe brought the subject up. Simply put, NFL people don’t think the PFF tribe’s offensive line grades are worth half a pound of horse fertilizer.

So no, Joe isn’t going to trust dudes living in an Irish dorm to use cockamamie voodoo to grade offensive linemen, sometimes off broadcast tape.

Joe will stick with NextGen Stats, thank you. NextGen Stats uses data straight from sensors embedded in players’ equipment. So Joe is comfortable typing how Bucs left tackle Tristan Wirfs is the best pass-blocking tackle in the game. Why? Because NextGen Stats says so.

Since the start of the 2022 season, Wirfs has only allowed 14 pressures. And that’s through 20 games!

Additionally, Miami’s Terron Armstead and Green Bay’s David Bakhtiari are tied with Wirfs for fewest sacks allowed (one) in the same time frame.

Yeah, before the season kicked off, Joe was freaking out over the Bucs’ decision to flip Wirfs from right tackle to left tackle. Wirfs was so dominant at right tackle, Joe just could not understand the logic of screwing with perfection.

So far, it seems Wirfs is making the transition rather nicely.

was talking with a jets fan the other day and he asked:

“how’s the bucs o-line?”…and he knows a lot about football…

i said pretty good, and i explained we just might have the best tackle in the league…and i had to tell him about wirfs and spell the name…he hadn’t heard of him…

outside of tampa or the nfc south, he’s not as widely known as some might think…

but i did put the guy on…now he’s aware just how good he is…

and he’s big on becton with the jets, who if i remember correctly, came out in the same draft, when there were 4 big top tackles coming out that year…

seems we got the best one hands down

  2. garro Says:

My eyeball stats (which are rarely wrong) says he is doing a good job in pass and run.

    That is all

    Go Bucs!

  3. Jack Clark Says:

Thanks Joe, I was waiting for you to report how well Triston Wirfs is doing at left tackle

  4. Delusional Intelligence Says:

Ian Harold Beckles is already putting Wirfs in the HOF. Would be cool for Baldy to do a Breakdown on Wirfs.

And just in case anyone wondered. Prototype: The Legacy of Rondé Barber is now available on Youtube. I am off to watch it now.

  5. BillyBucco Says:

Who was it Ian Beckles or Booger McFarland that said the Bucs would be entertainingly bad? I think it was the later.
Then you have Warren Sapp waiting to see before spewing nonsense and he lauds a guy we were all concerned with, Logan Hall.
Seems it wasn’t just Suh after all stopping the run.
Have you heard his name since?
The more I watch football, I’m amazed just how stupid some comments are.
That guy must still be breastfeeding.

  6. Crickett Baker Says:

I am so glad Wirfs is still “doing what Wirfs does”.

Prototype is a great production ESPECIALLY right before our Eagles game. It really should motivate our team!

BTW, even though we are 2-0, let us not forget that we recently got wins over the Jets and Raiders in the worthless (NOT) preseason games which we did not do last year.

  7. Greg Says:

Of course the scouts are triggered by pff. Remember the baseball scouts going nuts if you mention Bill James and saber metrics? They HATED it. It’s the same with with every sales person I have ever managed. Everyone loves magical thinking. Maybe pff’s numbers aren’t perfect but they’re getting better and better.

Unless something happens to that cuts his career short, he’ll be in the hall one day, in particular now that he’s flipped to LT.

He’s still got a very long career in front of him, but I think he’s as sure fire of a HOFer as you right now for someone his age.

I am not disputing that in any way, shape or form. Tristan is IMHO our most talented Offensive player. Yes even more than the strength of the team, Mr. Evans and Mr. Godwin.

Beckles was comparing him to Munoz, Pace, Jones and Allen. I’m not saying doesn’t have the potential. But lets pump the brakes a bit.

You can check out Ian’s man crush by clicking my name.

  10. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Of course he is. If Wirfs played center he’d be the best at that too.

  11. BucU Says:

Tristan is gonna make a gazillion dollars next contract. Couldn’t be happier for him. He’s as elite as they come.

  12. Duane Says:

Between Tristan Wirfs and Vita Vea, the Bucs enjoy the two best in the league at their jobs, in the most important place – the lines.

  13. D-Rome Says:

If it was Donovan Smith he would have had already 4 holding calls against him.

  14. orlbucfan Says:

Leave it to Jason Licht and his scouts. The only reason he hasn’t been awarded GM of the Year is cos he works for a certain nowhere team in west central FL. SNORT!!

  15. Jim R. Says:

“Would be cool for Baldy to do a Breakdown on Wirfs.”

    He did.

  16. Infomeplease Says:

Big test for the trenches on MNF!! Won’t be long now!!

  17. SlyPirate Says:

    Baldy loves Bucs.

Vea is a monster. He bull-rushed 2 OL into the QB. OL weigh a minimum of 300 lbs and are super strong. How is this even possible?

  18. Pete Says:

4 sacks in 3+ years and as I recall, one was during the game where he suffered the high ankle sprain and tried to go. After he gave up that sack, he realized he had to shut it down. A tremendous football player.
