Mike Evans Trending Up

September 20th, 2023

Old reliable.

Joe has always said that when it comes to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin (and yeah, Lavonte David, too), their class works against them.

None of these guys, sadly, is considered one of the best at their positions because they don’t rock the boat. They are class acts so they don’t draw the attention others do.

Then you have guys like Odell Beckham, attention whores with their antics, and people act like Beckham is friggin’ Ja’Marr Chase.

Joe thinks Evans is finally starting to get the recognition he deserves. It first began to simmer when Tom Brady was throwing him passes, and Evans was making sick catches (remember the Buffalo game in 2021?).

Then this month Evans had a contract-extension demand ad put a deadline on it. It came and went but boy, did that make waves. And now Evans is following that up by balling out. Evans is fourth in the NFL in receiving yards with 237.

Because of Evans’ play, Jeffri Chadiha of NFL.com says Evans is a man on the rise.

Evans made it clear that he was unhappy about not getting an extension from the Bucs this offseason. He made a strong case in Sunday’s win over Chicago as to why he may have plenty to offer another team when free agency rolls around. Evans had six receptions for 171 yards and a touchdown, with a 70-yard catch-and-run thrown in for good measure. He may be getting up there in age (he’s now 30), but right now, he’s a big part of Tampa Bay’s 2-0 start.

Let’s be real, catching passes from Tom Brady isn’t the hardest thing in the world. But the way national folks disparaged Baker Mayfield, if Evans has yet another 1,000-yard season, that’s going to get a boatload of attention.

It won’t hurt if the Bucs make the playoffs.

While Evans may see his stock rising, that’s for folks outside Tampa. Bucs fans have long known how valuable Evans is.

Mike, along with this team will have a chance to make a name for themselves on Monday night. This is the time, there is no Brady, Gronk or AB all we have now is a homegrown team and a gritty journeyman qb which is why no one believes in this team. This team has been crushing it this far, now it’s time to do it on the big stage of MNF against a “premier” opponent. The time is here Bucs, go beat the sh!t out of the Eagles and the league will take notice!

    #PayMikeEvans he n Godwin makes a QB n a team

  3. Bucschamp Says:

Is there a data on how fast mike is now? He looks fast in the video

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Bucchamp Mike was clocked on the 70 yarder at over 20 mph. I can’t remember this decimal.

It’s hard to believe 1 catch has carried Beckham like it has. He’s had a couple good years. I can’t remember if it was year 2 or 3 when Mike had the catch of the year. He went up one handed by the sidelines and got blasted out of bounds! Even with Brady here Evans never got the national attention he should have gotten. Year after year he produces no matter who the QB is. Pay the man and send Ira over to get his measurements for that jacket!

to win monday night we’re going to need a big or spectacular game from someone on this team…someone besides the expected producers…someone is gonna have to raise up like a mike evans did last sunday…

even if it’s a guy like sneak who comes off the bench for 8 carries for 69 yards and a td…

or yaya racks up 2 sacks and 2 tfl’s…

philly is good, real good…playas gotta come to play

  9. Oddball Says:

Disrespect and/or ignorance on the media’s part is nothing new around here.

  10. Bbro Says:

If you could choose any receiver in the league who would be your pick ? Mine would be Mike Evans #13 and we’re letting him go WTH. You don’t have any of our QB’s looking good without Evans abilities. There’s no players worth freeing up Evans salary for. Come on Licht get your head out of your darkness.

  11. K_bassuka Says:

Mike Evan’s is a class act and the type of leader and player this team needs. He has made all of his QB look good over ever since he was drafted.

  12. First Last Says:

Makes you think when Baker was blowing things up in Oklahoma he had two tall receiver – Lamb and Andrew’s. Now go look up the height of OBJ and Jarvis Landry. Landry looked great with Baker Mayfield – where is he now? Same with Higgins (not the Cincinnati one). I think due to Mayfield being 6’1 to 6’2 he does better with a dude he can see over the line.

  13. Tucker Says:

It wasn’t because of one catch, before injury obj was a monster.

  14. DoooshLaRue Says:

    58.8 yards pee game average.
    Truly astounding.

  15. Leighroy Says:

Mike is a beast, we know this. The financial problem is committing the coin to a 30yr receiver with long-standing hammy issues. Those issues don’t get better with age. Licht learned at the school of Belicheck who believes it’s better to give up a year or 2 too early, than be committed for 3 years too late – for better or for worse.

Mike supposedly wants Cooper Kupp money, which was 3 years at 80 mil extension, with 75 mil guaranteed. I think Licht is right to take the wait and see approach. Maybe he can commit to that deal easier if Baker proves some advancement and resigns. This is what sucks about the salary cap, and sustains the off-season drama and intrigue of the NFL.

Also keep in mind, that new contract or not, the Bucs are on the hook for 12mil of dead cap money for Mike in ‘24. I don’t know enough to know if a new contract solves that issue, but I sure hope it would.

  16. Duane Says:

Mike is a team player rather than a prima donna “throw me the damn ball” receiver. And he has played on teams with very good no. 2 receivers or 1A and 1B receivers or even 1C receivers, so he doesn’t get all the targets that say, a Davonte Adams had going with Aaron Rodgers.

But talk doesn’t produce dollars in contracts, and talk doesn’t produce division, conference, and Super Bowl championships. Mike doesn’t need the talk he just wants to be paid a market rate. It is guaranteed that some team will pay him in 2024, provided he does not get severely injured this season. Whether that team is the Bucs will depend upon the Bucs perception of need and available cap dollars to spend … and what kind of deal that Jason Light and Mike Evans are willing to negotiate.

  17. adam from ny Says:

    pull up obj’s numbers…

like 3 or so really good years with the giants…

then not much at all after that but a “dude with a big tude”…

in fact he barely gets on the darn field…

there are some guys who don’t care about winning and teammates much, and concern themselves only with salary and making noise in the media – and keeping the talk and focus on them…i think they call those guys divas…but i could be wrong…haha…

one last thing…in this world we have some people who are just “natural dividers”…they get in between people, families, couples, groups, teams, camaraderie, and good positive flow and energy…sometimes these people we call “dividers”, don’t even do it particularly on purpose…it’s just the nature of the particular person that facilitates it…something to think about…also they must be kept out of the bucs locker room at all costs

  18. Boss Says:

Pay the man! 5 years 10 million. 4 guaranteed

    omg boss thats wild !!

  20. BradyGronk Fan Says:

I’m routing hard for Mike Evans to have a monster Justin Jefferson type season. That’s what he needs plus about 3 more solid years to get in the HOF. 1500+ yards, 12+ TDs, 65% catch rate, should get him his 1st all pro and his 5th probowl. A 2nd SB would also help as most HOF wrs only have 1.

  21. OneBuc Says:

Exactly right – Evans and Godwin are quiet, classy, and humble football players. Sports media doesn’t know what to do with that, so they mostly ignore them. That’s fine – Ronde Barber did just fine under the same phenomenon.

  22. Fred McNeil Says:

This is going to be a brutal off-season. Send in your donations of Tums and Alkaseltzer to one Buc Place.

  23. 1#bucsfan Says:

I’m stealing someone else’s comment but ME13 will be the first offensive player inducted into the HOF. Dude is a beast and the only reason which is the same as LVD they don’t get the recognition because they play for the Bucs. Tampa fans know and the NFC south teams know how good LVD CG14 and ME13 are. I mean how great they are.

Joe You have much more faith in the folks outside of Tampa than I do.
How much attention has he gotten outside of Tampa for his previous 1,000 yard efforts? They will find some reason to ignore him yet again.

    Go Bucs!
