Todd Bowles Updates Two Injury Issues

September 18th, 2023

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Updated 4:30 p.m. – So Bucs coach Todd Bowles had his day-after press conference discussing yesterday’s win over the Bears, and a little chatter about the Eagles game a week from tonight.

Bowles did touch upon a couple of issues related to injuries, but he was tight-lipped.

On the Chase Edmonds injury, Bowles did not mention how long the team expects the veteran running back to be out, but later on radio he said it would be two games.

Bowles was asked if the Bucs play to acquire another running back in Edmonds’ absence.

Bowles had a vague answer.

“We’ll go with what we have right now,” Bowles said. Of course, what is “right now?” It seems to Joe “right now” could change in a few hours.

As for Carlton Davis’ possible return against the Eagles, Bowles again was vague.

“It’s probably a little early to tell right now,” Bowles said.

Davis has a toe injury and did not play yesterday. The Bucs have not listed any sort of a timetable for Davis’ return.

As for another injured corner, Jamel Dean, that subject never came up. Here is what Joe can tell say about Dean and his injury.

Dean did jog off the field after being tended to by Bucs trainers. Joe also saw him walk off the field and through the tunnel of The Licht House after the game and he was still in uniform.

Dean did not appear to be walking with any sort of limp. So whatever injury Dean suffered, it didn’t take him off his feet.

i thought i read somewhere that dean said he just had the wind knocked out of him. not sure how true it is.

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

If it’s turf toe Carlton shouldn’t play and wait until after the bye week.

Dean told a reporter after the game that he had the wind knocked out of him and that he was good to go. Either way Dean is having a bad start to the season and he really needs to step up his coverage.

Now the person I’m most interested in we didn’t hear about. Hopefully Kancey is able to practice later this week.

  3. Leighroy Says:

I’ll 2nd everything A Bucs Fan just posted, and note that Dean was the guilty party early letting DJ Moore run right by him that first drive if I’m not mistaken. Frustrating play that thankfully I care lesser about now, after the W.

  4. Hunter Says:

Dean definitely had a rough day yesterday, for his standards, even before the injury. Hopefully nothing serious!

  5. Buc4evr Says:

    Any word on Kancey?

  6. Ricki Says:

Good thing we have two very good starting CB

  7. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Leonard Fournette is still out there isn’t he?

  8. David Says:

Zion and the rookie are continuing to impress. The Eagles are not the same as the Bears… They have a lot more weapons.
    I assume Dean is playing.
It would be great if Davis can play but not if it’s risking long-term damage where he’s lost for awhile

  9. Boss Says:

gonna NEED CD to suit up Kancey as well.

All hands on deck if they wann beat the igles

  10. stpetebucfan Says:

So I’m curious as to how guys here feel. I know how most hate the conservative game management of Bowles although I personally think he’s done a good job this season. (realize I’m in the minority)

But what about the overall approach. If prior to the season we had learned the Bucs reached the bye at 2-2 we wouldn’t have been that disturbed and if it involved winning the first two…well it still leaves the Bucs in great position to continue their growth and be ready to strike for a Division title.

So conservative? Keep Kancey and Davis out until after the bye and simply make sure these guys are healed and ready to go.

Or aggressive. Win now and see what Kancey and Davis can do?

Or do what Bowles says and just play it day by day?

I’m somewhere between the first and third. I don’t wish to push injuries this early, especially with a bye up ahead…BUT if the training staff signs off…….

  11. Duane in Sanford Says:

If I were looking to bring the full roster to bear on one game in the near future, it would be for the Saints game. Rest Davis and Kancey if you need to. Take your chances with what you have on Monday, but so much more is riding on that division game.

  12. BucU Says:

Firstly Dean played pathetically yesterday. Secondly Kancey is a bum. He’s Russell Gage Jr. We sure know how to pick em.

  13. Why Not Says:

It looks like Hunt and Fournette or both available. I just read an article that the Colts are sniffing around both of them.

  14. orlbucfan Says:

@stpete, I agree. Rest Davis. TBH, I don’t know much about Kancey cos I don’t follow college games. We’ve got to beat the Aints. For more reasons than one, but the main reason is our division. I know they are woeful underdogs, but I hope the Panthers kick their butts tonight.

  15. captainstagger Says:

Boss is right, you have a chance to go 3 in o to start the season, its philly, it’s all hands on deck.

  16. Marine Buc Says:

    Uh-Oh…

The one thing that will scuttle the Buc’s ship this season is injuries.

The depth is thin at most positions…

Zion and C. Izien continues to play very well. We need Davis to return ASAP though.

  17. SlyPirate Says:

    1) Zyon. People stressed about ZM replacing CDIII. He put in a lot of work this offseason and he held his own. Almost had a great INT. Let’s show him some love.

    2) Kancey. Love for CK to make an appearance against the Eagles. No real tape on him. Could be our secret weapon.

    3) Trainers. For all the trainer haters, time to acknowledge how healthy the team is. The Bucs have been innovative in their preseason approach to maintain health. It’s paying off.

    4) For all the “Licht sucks at the draft, especially the second round.” Where you at? Time to call yourself out. This class is RIDICULOUS!!! Our sophmores are balling out.

  18. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Depends on whether Davis had a grade 1,2, or 3 turf toe injury. Grade 1 a week or two. Grade 2 a month or two. Grade 3 2 to 6 months and or surgery. The worst scenario would be to rush Davis back ASAP for a non divisional game and exacerbate the problem and put him on the shelf for months. Conservative is preferable when you are talking about your best CB.

  19. Herbiebuc Says:

Am I trippin I remember seeing dean back in after that injury

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

I’ll tell you what Joe, I’d bet a paycheck ole playoff Lenny could come in right now and not miss a beat.

  21. Brian Says:

Calling Kancey a “bum” at this point is one of the dumbest things I’ve read here. Cmon man, get a grip.

  22. Dan Says:

BUCS ABOUT TO GET EMBARRASED ON NATIONAL TV MONDAY NIGHT, EAGLES 37 BUCS 13

LMAO, IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT RUNNING UP THE LINEMANS BACKS FOR A 1 YARD GAIN THEN YOU ARE CORRECT

  24. Lord Cornelius Says:

I couldn’t be happier with the start and the reflection on the coaching staff.

Just so many players developing and improving. Zyon was looking solid and like a different player than year 1 in the preseason and it carried through.

Between him and Izien it’s like we have 2 more legit starters in the secondary compared to last year.

O-line is upgraded even with Jensen still out. Palmer looks to be an upgrade over Russel Gage or any other WR3 we had last year. Rakim Jerret is an upgrade over Gage.

Pass rush massively upgraded so far even without Kancey lol. So the entire D is upgraded by default

  25. Bucswin Says:

I saw Dean pointing to his chest. It looked like he got hit in the chest.

  26. crazyhorse54 Says:

The offense is learning the playbook in these early games. I’m not particularly worried although, Monday night’s game looks like a loss based only on the fact the Eagles run an offense they have had for quite some time. The Bucs Defense could be something special if they stay healthy. These early-season injuries are troubling. But, all teams can say the same.

  27. unbelievable Says:

Yesterday was one of Dean’s worst days as a Buc.

Maybe it was whatever injury he’s dealing with, but he looked slow and lost on way too many plays. An average QB would have made him pay dearly.

  28. Brandon Says:

BucU. The greatest weakness of this team is all of the know nothing fans like yourself. You wouldn’t know good football if it hit you in your flapping mouth.

  29. Hunter Says:

@Brandon Exactly. What a bum some of our “fans” are smh

  30. Usfbuc Says:

Have to protect the players health. I agree with one of the earlier posts that winning the saints game is more important to us than the Eagles game.

Leonard Fournette is still out there isn’t he?

Yes, and for good reason. Let him stay out there.

  32. AtlBuc Says:

Hey Guys!! I got tickets 2 rows behind the Bucs bench. Anybody sitting in that area? Anybody tailgating before the game? Lets meet!!

  33. 1#bucsfan Says:

Dan you’ll eat crow after we beat them. By your comment we all know exactly what kind of person you and and don’t kid yourself it’s not a good one at all. Like some stanky trash.

  34. Stanglassman Says:

I was told Dean was cramping during the game and went in to get a IV. I never heard anything about a chest injury or winded. You can tell during the play that he pulled up. I thought it was a hamstring, luckily it was just cramps. Cramping is really common in 108 heat & high humidity. Shaq even cramped up during his presser.

  35. garro Says:

“Bowles was asked if the Bucs play to acquire another running back in Edmonds’ absence.”

Joe you remind me of my sister when we were little asking mom for a pony. Her response was always we’ll see. I was old enough to know that meant no, or not right now. Sis held out hope.

    Go Bucs!

  36. JimBobBuc Says:

Zyon has really upped his game from the preseason. He missed tons of tackles in preseason but I think his special teams play in the Vikings game was great with solid tackling. He needs to keep refreshing and improving his tackling this week for the Philly game.

I’m sure Kancy would like to play in front of his former Pitt and Pennsylvania fans.

Even with many of our injured guys playing, it will be really hard to get a W on Monday night. We really need to get loud on Monday. I prefer sitting our injured players to get them ready for the Aints.
