Dave Canales: The Football Isn’t The Only Thing Baker Mayfield Must Protect

September 15th, 2023

Bucs OC Dave Canales.

It seems Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales has two unshakeable rules for his quarterbacks.

First is protect the football.

Second is protect yourself.

Baker Mayfield popped up on the injury report this week. It’s unclear on which play he was injured. But given his aggressive style, would it surprise anyone if Mayfield was hurt running the ball?

Yesterday, Canales spoke about how Mayfield must take better care of himself physically on the field of play.

“’Protect the quarterback, you’re the quarterback.’ It’s just that reminder, right?” Canales said he tells Mayfield.

“Throw it away. He did a great job of that. He threw the ball away. He got out of situations, he saved us a couple sacks by scrambling a few times, he didn’t try to overthink the pass or find the big one.”

Canales thought it was cool that Mayfield won the Week 1 “Angry Runs” scepter from Kyle Brandt of NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football.” But Canales said he’d rather not have his quarterbacks win the award.

To win the scepter, a quarterback has to take punishment or dish it out, hence the name “Angry Runs.” Canales’ goal is for his quarterbacks to stay upright, not carry around a pimp cane.

“….not carry around a pimp cane.” Only us old dudes probably get that reference!

  2. orlbucfan Says:

I really like BM’s feistiness and grit, but Canales is 100% correct. Baker won’t help us if he’s out with a broken neck. I’m the wrong sex for a pimp cane, but the right age for a cane. LOL. 🙂

  3. Longtime Brady Fan Says:

    No. 3 protect your receivers.

  4. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Mayfield all about the pimp cane.

  5. Duane Says:

A lot of people seem to forget or never realized that Baker Mayfield had a great 2020 season taking his Browns to the playoffs and winning a first round game, but then in 2021, he injured his non-throwing shoulder and he simply did not look like the same player as the season before. He and the Browns did poorly in 2021 and that got him cut by the Browns. So there is a history there, and I can certainly understand why Dave Canales and all us fans hope that Mayfield truly does take care of himself.

If he does get hurt and has to miss playing time, I am confident that Kyle Trask can step in and run the offense just fine. But all things considered, it’s best if Mayfield can stay unhurt and play at a high level all season long and into the playoffs!

    Pimp Cane. Outstanding. 😆

  7. JimBobBuc Says:

Somebody needs to tell Canales to cover up his face during his play calls. Other teams will scout his calls and figure them out.

  8. Joe Says:

Glad people liked the “pimp cane” reference. 🙂

  9. Pickgrin Says:

I can see Baker now – toten that cane – steppin out of his tricked out maroon Olds 98 with 3″ whitewalls and big furry dice hangin from the rearview mirror – wearing that fuzzy hat….. LOL

  10. D-Rok Says:

All Baker needs now is a fur coat and a huge feather in his velvet hat to go with his pimp cane. He’ll win “Best Dressed Pimp” at the annual Playas Ball.

Good stuff, Joe – gave me a chuckle. 🙂

  11. stpetebucfan Says:

Someone has already said it…KYLE TRASK. I supported Baker getting the first shot because of his experience. He hasn’t disappointed. But Trask showed me something in the pre season including an angry run of his own. I’m not in panic mode if Trask has to come in.

What is the goal of this team? Everybody says SB and great but what is the true realistic goal. As a fan I simply want to see the playoffs…advancing a round would be nice…but get in the playoffs…keep working on the salary cap problems…draft like this year…and NEXT YEAR I think an SB is a possibility.
At least that’s what I hope.

  12. Buccos Says:

I think Mayfield should play like a man who is trying to save his career in the NFL. He needs to win that award again this week. I’m not worried about him getting hurt. We’ve got Trask

  13. HC Grover Says:

We would have lost if he had.

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Mayfield injured by game 4?

“What is the goal of this team?”

As a fan, I want to be more than a one and done playoff team. In order to do that, we need a QB who can lead us into the future…and I’m not convinced Mayfield is that guy.

If getting THE guy, be it Trask or someone else, means a couple years of development, I’m okay with that…but in my mind, Mayfield has more than had enough chances.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And by development, I mean in a starting role.

  17. Infomeplease Says:

Mayfield will be Mayfield. Asking him to play differently is like asking a rattlesnake to be a worm! This is the game of football!!

  18. Rod Munch Says:

So scoring points doesn’t make his list… humm.

  19. Wild Bill Says:

I totally respected the way Baker ran rather than taking a loss. He set the tone for the rest of the guys. It’s a tough game and injuries can happen but probably no worse running than taking a big hit standing in a collapsing pocket. Dog ran like hell for that first down. Fired up the other guys too.

  20. garro Says:

If we rely on Baker to get us running yards regularly he will end up in Tampa General. We need pass pro and Baker needs to be quick and accurate. I liked Canales play calls and Baker getting us in the right plays last week. Bottom line is we need to execute on offense.

    Go Bucs!

Not trying to attack you, just responding.

If you set your goals to “less than” or “part way” you will most definitely achieve that.
Think about that for a moment.
That means that you will probably achieve even less than you originally thought.
Winners aren’t always champions, and that’s OK.
If you aim for less than a championship, you are aiming to lose, or at least accepting defeat before the battle.

  22. David Says:

That is the only way baker can win. He can’t throw out of pocket and that is the recipe for getting hurt .

  23. Mark hardt Says:

Tom Brady, Fitzpatrick, and the Titans guy changed the paradigm on how older QB,s can succeed. 28 is now young for a QB. If Baker goes deep in the playoffs he can be the long term solution given medical science and all. He will take less for stability and a good owner. The Browns owner is a mess.
