Baker Mayfield And Too Many Hits
September 14th, 2023So yesterday it surprised the heck out of Joe when the Bucs released their first injury report for Bears week and Baker Mayfield was listed having an injury to his throwing shoulder.
Mayfield was a full participant in practice. So the way Joe looks at it, if it’s a Wednesday and he fully participated in practice, barring something unforeseen, Mayfield will start in the Bucs’ home opener Sunday.
Did Mayfield tip something off about his injury when he did his weekly media session yesterday? Some two hours before the injury report was released, a healthy-looking Mayfield discussed taking hits and when not to take hits.
Mayfield was asked about stiff-arming dudes and the Bucs quarterback admitted if it is not a crucial play, he needs to be smarter.
“Oh, absolutely,” Mayfield said about absorbing hits. “I think there was a run earlier [than his Angry Run], just kind of a scramble on third down [that was] not necessary – just run out of bounds.
“But when it comes down to the third-and-shorts and things like that when the game is on the line, it’s a different story. There are definitely areas that I can get better, but it’s the first game and I had the juices flowing.”
If Mayfield remembered that play so well, a third-down scramble, is it because he was hurt on that play?
Joe assumes the way Mayfield ran multiple times for tough yards in Minnesota, that’s when he suffered the shoulder injury.

Damn. Not another shoulder issue already.

Nope, it was on a passing play when a defender landed on him and his shoulders.
it should have been a penalty called by the ref but since it was the Bucs they didn’t call it. When I saw the hit and defender landing on top of him at the time I thought he would be injured.

He didn’t do his normal warm up or throw the ball during the part of practice open to the media yesterday. That raises concerns about his accuracy and ability to throw down field come Sunday. Hopefully, it’s minor, but the fact he was only simulating throws next to Trask and not actually throwing is concerning.
Today will be more telling.

If Mayfield gets hurt I think the BUCS have a more than capable back up. Let’s hope he’s good to go. I would hate to see dink and dunk with no shots down field.

In today’s NFL, a team needs two good quarterbacks capable of starting and winning games. Just ask the Jets or the 49ers.
We got spoiled by Tom Brady who never missed a game for the Bucs due to injury. He knew how to protect himself better than most quarterbacks, which is part of how he was able to play to age 45.

Agree on the need for a good backup…..just in case. Luckily we got Wolford on the pactice squad!

Man, if that ain’t the god’s truth! Vikes were holding all over the place, too. Bank on it. I love Mayfield’s feistiness, but he’s got to learn how to slide and be more careful.

Brady>Mayfield>Trask>Wolford

You may be onto something. Hearing he was not hurt on a run play. Don’t know specifically what play/when it was.

Love the way Baker plays. But we all know, with his style of running, you can only bump heads with NFL Defenses for so long. He will have stretches where he misses games. So all I can say is, Be ready Mr Trask..Make sure you are ready. Your shot is coming much sooner than you think.

Joe…I’m pretty sure it was the bootleg when he hit Otton for a first…he was slammed on his throwing arm
September 14th, 2023 at 9:36 am
Not sure when it happened but the live TV broadcast showed a trainer treating his shoulder on the sidelines…it was not late in the game

No it was at 10:55 in the third quarter, baker gets hit from a blitz.
they show two replays of that play, it is the second replay where you see
the player land on his shoulders.

Any word on the exact diagnosis? Muscle? Tendon? Ligament? Rotator cuff?

How do you know this? Joe gave the impression that Mayfield practiced normally.

Unlike Brady, he keeps the D honest.

I get the need for wisdom here but I’m glad he’s still all in on doing it when required.
I saw Trask make a run like that in a preseason game that not only surprised me but seemed to energize Trask as well.
The team has TWO QB’s! Discretion sure but DON’T stop running Baker!
