Trey Palmer Motivated By Mike Evans, Chris Godwin
September 13th, 2023If you think about it, Bucs rookie receiver Trey Palmer couldn’t have landed in a much better spot.
(OK, OK, relax Baker Mayfield haters. Hear Joe out.)
The speedy sixth-round draft pick landed on a team where, barring injuries, he’s not under much pressure.
He is now teammates with two of the league’s best receivers, one perhaps a Hall of Fame player. So Palmer doesn’t have to ball out right away. He has room to grow and ease into his career.
Palmer caught his first NFL touchdown on Sunday. Hopefully, many more are to come. But Evans and Godwin are doing the heavy lifting in the passing game.
Sunday demonstrated why the Bucs have such an outstanding pair of Nos. 1-2 receivers. Evans makes a touchdown catch of a ball thrown slightly behind him and Godwin extends his NFL-leading streak of 15 games with at least five catches with a truly sick catch to seal a Bucs win.
Palmer told Joe after the game that Evans and Godwin making highlight plays is a daily thing.
“I see that every day,” Palmer said. “When you see them do that every day, you just [want to work] more. Get on the JUGS after practice, and practice and practice to get better.”
Palmer said there is no pecking order in the Bucs’ wide receiver room. Despite Evans and Godwin being studs, Palmer told Joe they treat everyone the same. And both are eager to help Palmer reach his potential, always offering tips and advice.
“They uplift me, too,” Palmer said of the morale boost Evans and Godwin provide him. “It’s like a brotherhood that we’ve got.”
Watching Palmer blossom as a rookie, does anyone miss jumping Scotty Miller?

Palmer is head-and-shoulders better right now than S Miller ever was.
Although, that catch/play against Green Bay will live in Bucs lore forever and I did like and respect Scotty as a person.
But we upgraded massively.

Baller.
put ME in the slot and him on the outside.

I liked the awareness Palmer displayed on his TD reception, he read Mayfield’s movement in the pocket and slid into an open seam in the endzone. And he recovered a fumble that turned out to be a no-catch. But still showed how the ball just seems to find this guy.

OROY and future all pro

Soon will probably see teams getting burnt by Palmer. I’m sure him and Tucker come October will be glad the draft unfolded well for them. They are in the perfect team for them. I’m glad we have them. Licht hit it out of the park again.

Scotty Miller? Never heard of him. Oh that wanna be receiver. I’m all in on Trey (see ball catch ball) Palmer.
Joe that is one of the better statements you’ve put to print. See Ball Catch Ball, LOVE it!

Jason has an eye for talent at WR – was Justin Watson a Licht draft pick? Tyler Johnson, Scotty has their moments
I think it was a given Evans was a star, Godwin might be his best pick ever – or AW3 or Ali Marpet as a close second/third

Joe: C’mon, the TD pass to Evans was “slightly” behind him. The space between my front teeth is a greater distance. Just trying to balance historic fact and be overly protective of my man Baker, lol…. Good article though. (See, I give and take).

There was never a question about enough talent out wide. Palmer is like icing on the cake.
The pressure on offense starts at QB. Mayfield alleviated a lot of that Sunday.
Only one game but clearly just as Mayfield has shown he can get a team to the playoffs and win on the road in the playoffs…only one season…he’s shown that he can lead this team to the playoffs IF things continue to break right.
Big concern of the OL is not gone but at least for their first game these guys passed the test in one of the loudest toughest places to play. Should get the young guys ready to play in the N.O. Dome. Goeddeke is not Wirfs..but he didn’t get embarrassed nor did Mauch despite his bad back…Wirfs is potentially a future HOF left or right tackle and Feiler turned out to be as advertised.
Two huge guys on the left and that’s where they got one of the critical first downs with Baker’s dive. I think given ALL that they faced…first game as a unit in a tough place.
The RB situation is not an emergency need and there is still plenty of potential.
I think White will develop…he was pressing…and everybody feels Tucker is just scratching the surface and he’s only a rookie!
Meanwhile John Romano and half the posters here only wish to look at the half empty part of the glass. Was it a pretty win? Of course not but it might have actually been to the Buc’s benefit that it wasn’t pretty. Now they know how hard it is to win and to NEVER give up.
Is there room for improvement. YES. But that’s actually the exciting part. Does anybody still doubt the character of this team or it’s coaches and their “will to win”?

I saw the Atlanta v Carolina game here in Texas. Miller had zero targets.

I don’t doubt the coaches. I think we got rid of the bad apple. I sure love what Canalés brings. I love the offensive scheme. I can get use to the long offensive drives to then release our defensive wolves. This could be another special experience for Bucs fans. The high powered offense was fun while it lasted but boy I look forward to the rest of the season.
Go Bucs!!!

That catch Godwin made was much like Tyler Johnson’t in the playoff game vs the Saints…..except Johnson’s was to the inside and Godwin’s to the outside…..both crucial catches.

@StPetebucsfan That was a refreshing read. I’m glad to see posters like you, that take the time to think about the big picture and be open minded. That’s solid analysis right there, keep up the good work. Hopefully more “Bucs fans” on here can start to look at the team and players the way that you do.
Smooth Bay.

All the more reason we need to keep ME13 this offseason. Period!
Go Bucs!

You know, even in the lost years it sure is fun to have elite receivers like ME13 and Godwin to watch and marvel at. But hey make bucs fun to watch even in the down years. Cheers to their continued dominance and hopefully the meteoric rise of big play Trey in the future!

*It really makes bucs fun to watch….silly autocorrect

That was GREAT CATCH. Totally thought we had CG 2.0 after that catch. Can’t believe he showed up the next year out of shape. That story should also serve as motivation for Trey. Don’t let short term success get the better of you.

StPete … Great analysis. Your very last question … ‘Does anybody still doubt the character of this team or it’s coaches and their “will to win”?’ … got me thinking back though.
All during the off-season all I kept reading from the majority of JBFers (and others to be sure) was that Todd Bowles sucked. Kept seeing comments using the words ‘cowardly’ & ‘terrible time management’ plus tons of others in a similar vein. As I remember, most picked the Bucs to win anyplace from 4-6 games (some picked less).
Interesting how 1 win reshapes minds … until the first loss of course. Then it’ll be ‘Chicken Little, the sky is falling’. Funny thing is that Todd Bowles is who Todd Bowles has always been … an exceptional DC who’s not afraid to gamble. The fact that the Bucs rank in the Top-5 blitzing teams over the past 4 years kinda verifies that in my mind (blitzing is one helluva gamble).
The one thing that stands out most about Sunday’s performance is that this young Bucs team is gonna give it all that it’s got all season long. That’s all anyone can really ask. I still like our chances to win the NFC South, but it’s a long road ahead.

Wyoming Joe it was behind him.
Evidenced by him having to face the defender to bring the ball in.
Anytime you have to turn to face the defenders they have a chance to strip it.
ME13 did an excellent job shielding it quickly however so no harm done.
Baker had some great passed either dropped or barely touched like the pass to DT. He still had to turn around though as it was short a tad.
They will get better and should handle the Bears at home.
I’m actually hoping it’s not a blowout so they don’t get big heads before Philly.
Beating Philly would be a true “Shock The World” scenario.

wyoming joe – EXACTLY lmao

@SmoothBayRider THANKS. I know I bore a lot here but I just tire of the “Bowels” and hyperbolic simple posts…appreciate your response.
D.R. Agree completely about the “Chicken Little” syndrome when things go bad a game. The first game Mayfield has like Josh Allen we’ll get the “I told you so” guys as well. 3 picks and they’ll be screaming for Trask.
Speaking of Trask. I read posters talking about possible Jets interest. NO. I support Mayfield starting but I’m not afraid of Trask playing at all. We may absolutely need him if Mayfield is going to insist on playing balls to the wall.

Chris saved our butts again on that 3rd and 10. Ridiculous catch.
September 13th, 2023 at 2:17 pm
This kid has star power potential written all over him. He’s got a long way to go, but at this stage, he’s playing beyond his experience. Once the O line settles and Baker has more time, I’m looking for him to drop a long ball into the hands of young Mr. Palmer on the fly.
September 13th, 2023 at 3:12 pm
Scotty who?
September 13th, 2023 at 3:44 pm
Palmer looks like a future starter to me.
September 13th, 2023 at 5:47 pm
Thanks Trey for coming to NE for your final year , not surprised at all about who you are , and attacking the football. Best for you and your family!

Palmer, Thompkins, and Jarrett all look to have great potential. I think Canales is holding back some deep routes for Palmer for later. I think Thompkins will play as we have seen him in practice, a baller. Jarrett just needs some touches and some experience. All these guys will attack the ball in contested catches. I like Canales play calling and I think he’s saving some stuff for the Saints.
We still need a baller at TE. I’m not sold we have the right pass catching TE.

Pretty damn cool to hear there is no pecking order in the WR room. Hard to believe with the egos in the NFL but I am not surprised about the fact with these two legends we have starting wide.
