Only Three Penalties Make Todd Bowles Smile

Bucs demonstrate discipline.
This was sort of incredible to Joe.
New offensive coordinator. Thoroughly different/new offense. Guys playing in different positions. First game of the season. On the road in a crazy-loud dome.
And yet the Bucs only drew three flags on Sunday against the Vikings.
(And one was a horses[p]it interference call on nickel corner Christian Izien.)
Yesterday, Bucs coach Todd Bowles noted the lack of penalties is not just something worked on in practice, but that it’s been a downward trend (in a good way) since the start of the worthless preseason games.
“It was progress from the preseason,” Bowles said. “It kind of went down each game. We don’t want to beat ourselves; we harp on that all the time.
“Sometimes you get those type of ball games but to start the season like that on the road with the crowd and atmosphere, especially with noise they bring and not get any false starts is impressive.”
That certainly impresses Joe. Think about it: a new offense and a new quarterback in a loud dome with that damn Vikings horn blowing all the time.
This tells Joe that the Bucs have been coached up if they are playing this disciplined this early.

Ought to be fired. It wasn’t even close and it could’ve/should’ve cost us a very important game.

The discipline and coaching adjustments were both what the doctor ordered.
Someone commented on another post after the game that the Bucs need to eliminate the “stupid penalties”. Huh?
3 flags for what 19 yards? Tons of rookies or new guys in new positions, new OC, first game of the year (normally a flag-fest). That’s what I call not beating yourself. Hope it continues. Big props to the o-line for no “panic holds”. Zero holding penalties in fact even when they were pushed around a little. Amazing. Great start for the big guys.

Three for a season opener is impressive for any team. For us it is amazing. Of course no Donovan Smith helped.

TB, DC, as well all the other coaches do deserve credit for the installed discipline of this team! Last season and even the first preseason game this year were played with a lack of discipline. And that goes for the penalties and tackling too. It was refreshing to see the Bucs not beat themselves in a close game. I truly enjoyed the gang tackling, rallying to the ball, by the defense. Continuing to play this way will bring the Bucs wins!

The lack of penalties was refreshing for this organization. After being near the best in the league in 2020 and 2021 (with amazing W-L results to go with), the team dropped to 3rd worst last year. Here’s to hoping they can keep it up the rest of the year!

Compare this to Smith’s penalty costing the Chiefs to lose brought a big smile to this fan’s face. Keep it up. Go Bucs.

That sideline horse collar tackle on Baker when he ran for a first down should have been called. He could easily have been seriously injured. Plus, I saw some helmet to helmet action in the highlight. 3 penalties the entire game in that dome? I was listening to the radio, and that place certainly ties the NOLA dome in LOUD. Congrats and kudos to the entire Bucs gang!
