The Root Of Peter King’s Bucs Bashing?

September 11th, 2023

Peter King

After NBC Sports super insider tripled down on his Bucs criticism last week, Joe thought King’s popular Monday morning column today would feature King issuing some form of mea culpa.

No chance, and King sort of took an extra shot in Tampa Bay’s direction.

King wrote two sentences about the Bucs’ win. The first was King saying he didn’t think the Bucs would beat the Vikings on the road. And the second was this gem.

“I think if I’m Baker Mayfield this morning, I’m feeling damn good about winning a road game against a 2022 playoff team when everyone gave up on me.”

So King thinks “everyone gave up” on Mayfield? WTF! Does King think Super Bowl-winning general manager Jason Licht is a clown? Does King think Mayfield’s family gave up on him? Heck, Mayfield had an offer from the Ravens this offseason and at least one other opportunity.

King acts as if Mayfield was just released from state prison after the world wrote him off following two seasons out of football.

Keep in mind this is the same King who predicted the Jameis Winston-led Saints would be the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs last season … but “everyone” gave up on Mayfield.

The reality is King gave up on Mayfield. That’s no reason to pretend “everyone” else did. Many others gave up on Mayfield, too, but three very-big-name colleagues of King did not, among others.

Early this morning, Joe had to delete nine comments on this website under earlier posts that all said the same thing. “F$#@ Peter King.”

Joe won’t be like King and say “everyone” in Tampa has given up on him.

    So “F$#@” is a banned word? 😉

    Peter King is a 🤡

  4. RustyRhinos Says:

Maybe Mr. King has tried to read all those Red Type links here on JBF, and decided to be antiBuccaneer…? I can’t say I blame him, when I see the Red Type swath, I skip the entire post…

  5. bucsandboltsfan Says:

King is a great writer and interviewer. He is notorious bad at predictions. I used to read his column every week before he became too political, and loved the insights and interviews. I just used to bet (or draft on my fantasy team) by doing the opposite of what King predicted.

  6. Kev@Inverness Says:

    F$#@ Peter King!

    Let’s go Peter King!

  9. Smashsquatch Says:

King can choke on Bowles’ balls!

  10. SC Bucs Fan Says:

I find the only positive in this article is Joe doesn’t paste the mind numbingly long rant he posts each time before King’s name

  11. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Never seeing a mention of Peter King again would do JBF proud

  12. Wild Bill Says:

Peter King is just one of many loud mouth sports “personalities” who mostly had no significant personal sports achievements of their own. And his waistline is surpassed only by his mouth. Other than that he is probably a warm and wonderful human. Or not.

  13. Paratrooper Buc Says:

King and all the other pundits and analysts who overwhelmingly picked the Bucs to lose assumed three things: Baker is bad. Bucs are bad. Vikings are good.

The reality is Baker is ok. Bucs are ok (defense is good. Offense needs work.) Vikings aren’t as good.

My biggest takeaways was the team played tough and had heart. Vikings did not have that especially Cousins who looked beat for the second half of the game. Baker is not the best QB but the guy has moxie and that can motivate a team. If we have luck we should be in the fight for most games.

  14. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Pretty hilarious reaction from Bill Simmons on his podcast this morning. To paraphrase, he thought the Bucs were going to be the worst in the division, and then he saw yesterday that White, David, Winfield, and Evans were still on the team and huh, maybe they’ll be good!

  15. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Can we say F$#@ Peter Queen?

  16. Buddha Says:

This is the first time in nearly three years that Baker feels he has the support of the coaching staff and his teammates. He is just regaining his confidence. 15 for 18 in the second half. That is a good half of football. And as the GOAT taught us, it is not how you start. It is how you finish.

  17. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

If I’m Peter King this morning I’m going to pretend I enjoy the smell while I tweet on the toilet.

  18. Dave Pear Says:

    It’s Richard King.

His nickname is “Dick.” Short for Richard.

  19. Beej Says:

It’s human nature to the assign all kinds of negative characteristics to people you don’t like, you see it from a lot of posters here regarding Mayfield. You don’t expect to hear that crap from “professionals” though

  20. DBS Says:

Look how many of our own fans picked us to lose yesterday. In fact even said we would beat ourselves. Where are they today or were they after the game? Peter King is the last person on the world I pay any attention to.

  21. Bucnjim Says:

That game must have killed 33% of all survivor pools in America yesterday. Have to give a shout out to Pat Mayo of Drafting’s maybe the only analyst that called for a outright Bucs win. Also if you teasing a parlay and took the Vikings to +1 boy you’re definitely upset right now. King is just another media type to never admit when they are wrong. Was surprised watching some of the NFL highlights to see guys that didn’t give the Bucs a chance give them props they deserved.

  22. WyomingJoe Says:

Baker did what all REALLY GOOD QBs do when they have a rough start: they suck it up, adapt and find a way to win. Yeah, he rushed some of his throws early because he rarely had a solid pocket to throw from. But when Canales changed to the no-huddle allowing Baker to play fast, it all started to click. If we can improve our running game (play Tucker more) the Bucs will be in the playoffs and Baker will be ranked in the Top 10. Go Bucs.

  23. Da Bucs Guy Says:

How do we now know that Licht did not want Tirask to start? And a 4 million dollar prove it deal for a QB proves that the Bucs did not fully Believe either.

And now that tape of the Bucs Offense is now out, let’s see what it looks like in games 2,3, and 4 BEFORE some are ready to award Mayfield with the comeback player of the year award.

  24. First Name Greatest Says:

Mike Florio picked a 31-14 Vikings win

Chris Simms, nearly all of the national media overlooked the weak interior of the Vikings O line, ignored that QB’s that don’t play in the pre season come out rusty/slow in Week 1, ignored the Vikings cut Dalvin Cook and other things that impact the game.

Let’s be real these analysts and so called experts are just guessing, they know barely more than what informed fans do. The only reasons they think they know more is due to having access to agents, players and team executives. They don’t have some amazing insider knowledge they are fed info by contacts.

Bucs will make a lot of analysts look bad this year.

  25. Jeff Says:

It’s a long season. Peter just might still be right.

  26. Bucnjim Says:

Nobody is awarding Mayfield anything! This was a team win not a Mayfield win. Have to give it up for the special teams play that has been suspect the last few years they were crushing it. Clean up a few mistakes and this team will surprise most people this year. It may never be flashy but it will certainly be a gritty team to watch.

  27. MelvinJunior Says:

You know what he means when he says “everyone.” He’s not talking about Mayfield personally, or his family… He’s talking about (pretty much) “everyone,” as in all of the major media people & hell, most never ‘believed’ in the first place.

  28. go dawgs Says:

    who cares.. we won

  29. MelvinJunior Says:

Plus, it’s JUST ONE win! I was sitting here and thinking that it was THE ‘happiest’ win and most ‘nervous-exciting’ win, that I can remember going thru/having in a very long time, BUT it’s still JUST ONE game tho. I thought it was absolutely AMAZING (Baker, all of it… especially, Bowles going for it on 4th down early, AND backed-up, Etc.), BUT I haven’t suddenly, turned into some kind of “Baker-Believer” & all of THAT, just overnight. Let’s Be Real Here!!!!

  30. firethecannons Says:

Peter King is the clown, any of us could do his job better

  31. zzbucs Says:

Joe, with all due respect, just don´t give relevance to this JOKER, same thing with Florio, they can be millionaires, they have millions of followers or whatever, that doesn´t mean they are good, because they arent´t…..

They are not sports journalist anymore, they are gossip, tabloid jockers, that´s exactly what they are……

  32. gotbbucs Says:

Everybody should enjoy the win, but that was not a good Vikings defense, and we struggled mightily against it. Our running game isn’t strong enough to sustain drives if our passing game can only have one chunk play over 18 yards.
Just being real, the Vikings lost that game way more so than the Bucs won it.
If I’m Peter King, I’m not overreacting and apologizing yet either. Week 1 in the NFL is an absolute crapshoot. Last year’s Bucs team is a prime example.
I’ll take the win gladly, but I’ll believe it when I see it as far as this team goes. Luckily we don’t have any recievers in our division like Justin Jefferson.

  33. Joshua porter Says:

Peter tingle King is an ass hat pure and simple…. how he has lasted this long with all the crap that comes out of his mouth is amazing. Ira is wayyyy better than king an ira has his own thoughts unlike ass hat king

  34. Cobraboy Says:

Another comment: Special Teams were special.

  35. Dave Pear Says:

    Don’t say “Richard.”

  36. #99 the big fella Says:

That guy has never liked the bucs

  37. Jerry Says:

    Jeff Says:
It’s a long season. Peter just might still be right
    ——-

Doubtful at this point. He said the Bucs will only win 2 games all year. So for him to be right, Bucs would have to go 1-15 the rest of the way. This team may not make the playoffs, sure. It may be 6 or 7 win team. However that’s not what King said. King says the Bucs are 2-15 team. A horribly bad team. It would be among the worst in our franchise’s history. Not only that, but he tripled down on that prediction. Which in my opinion is really really stupid considering the talent we have on defense and at WR.

  38. Dave Pear Says:

Peter King. Perfect first name. Although the nickname for Richard is appropriate as well.

  39. HC Grover Says:

The high roller football gamblers bet on him big.

  40. WillieG Says:

Peter King gave up on paying attention and using logic long ago.

  41. TomR Says:

    Who’s Peter King?

  42. Bob Says:

Our rookies played quite a bit, which is unusual. How about an article on how each one did?

  43. Fansince76 Says:

    KING BLOWS!

  44. sasquatch Says:

Digging pretty deep to find another slight in King’s words there, Joe. That’s called hyperbole, and it’s not far off to say “everyone” gave up on Mayfield. Yeah, so not literally everyone… Duh.

  45. #99 the big fella Says:

I find it funny that some buc fans still try to find the negative in the win.
Just be happy and support your team!

  46. Winny Testaverde Says:

Maybe it’s because Peter “Drama” Queen is self loathing…with a set of man cans/moobs to prove it. He hated the Bucs going back to the Gruden Era.

He does have great access to NFL players & decision makers. He has outkicked his pear shaped ways career wise. And he makes Olberman seem like a red Republican by comparison.

I miss Joe’s paragraph long description of PK…especially how mad it made some around these parts.

  47. Gofortheface30 Says:

I tend to lean conservative, but that is because I care more about the economy than identity politics to keep things grossly simplified in the spirit of making my point. However, I’m not the kind of person that picks sides. Wife votes the other way and so do a lot of my friends and that’s fine. Everyone is generally well meaning. Where I loathe the likes of Peter King and Florio is their incessant lecturing, soapbox, hypocritical, white guilt takes. Florida in particular has done a complete 180 from the mid 2000s – and then he sold out to his lib corporate overlords. Every other article is sprinkled with their insufferable political angles trying to enforce their hard left beliefs and it’s extremely gross. They think they’re being virtuous and all the are doing is furthering the divide. Peter king has turned in to the kind of bed wedding, effeminate bleeding vag that I hate

  48. ModHairKen Says:

    King is just lazy.

  49. Defense Rules Says:

gotbbucs … ‘Just being real, the Vikings lost that game way more so than the Bucs won it.’

Guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on that one. Vikings played a reasonably good game, but the 3 turnovers cost them dearly. Cousins was 33-for-44 (75%) for 328 yards (not a bad day’s work). That pass at the goal line in the 2nd qtr was right on target and was actually caught by Osborn but Izien ripped it away from him for the INT (monster play). The fact that our defense held them to only 17 points is a testament to how well OUR defense played IMO, and particularly how many BIG PLAYS our D turned in.

Vikings defense looked to be much improved over last season, probably thanks to hiring Brian Flores as their DC. Their run defense was horrible last year, but yesterday they held us to a 2.2 YPC average on our 33 rushes. Looked to me like they were doing a very good job of staying in their gaps & clogged things up well. And their pass defense was commendable. Mayfield went deep on 5 passes; only completed 1 of them (that 28-yd TD to Evans was really costly though). So overall I thought their defense did a good job of stifling what they knew we were gonna be doing (run more & more short passes).

Small Peter, his wife can’t even feel him.

  51. JA Says:

    Wahhh Wahhh
Boo hoo, a writer doesn’t like my team.
Many on this site write like they’re big tough guys, offering free info on how “real men behave.”
Last I heard, big tough guys don’t throw a hissy fit when someone doesn’t like their football team. They ignore the person.
Don’t you people understand that King is reveling in your hate?
It means you’re either listening to or reading his perspectives in his column (in this case, via Joe), and with that comes more money for His Highness. His job is to piss off 50% of fragile ego fans and stroke the egos of the other fifty. With no pissed off fans, King is out of a job. Writers who throw love at everybody don’t last long in the sports world.
If you truly loathed King, the best way to get rid of him is to ignore him.
And now Joe is giving him free ink. Albeit negative, King is loving it. Joe, you should make King buy you a beer next time he comes to town … if you haven’t already. Wink-wink.

  52. cmurda Says:

Peter King – What a useless slob! He should stick to things that he knows like not taking showers and eating on the toilet.

  53. orlbucfan Says:

Peter King has been badmouthing the Bucs for at least 44 years. I ignore him. Speaking of mouths, Bucs D did a great job shutting Justin Jefferson’s big mouth up in the second half. 🙂

  54. All_da_way Says:

It is a long season but I will say this.

Mayfield is who he is so King made up a narrative about Mayfield in his own mind that doesn’t exist in reality. Mayfield has his ups and downs and he isn’t an elite QB but he is good enough for what the Bucs are trying to do on offense.

Mayfield is capable of moving around, scrambling and making throws downfield on the run. He has done that his entire career.

  55. BucsFan81 Says:

Let them keep taking shots at this team. Bowles needs to print all the press clippings and they can use it as motivation. It’s good to be the underdogs cause then the pressure is not there. Maybe we will shock a lot of teams this year that are sleeping on us.

  56. SlyPirate Says:

    HELL YES, JOE!
Let’s keep King (and others … Chris Simms, Ian Beckles) accountable. All 10 BSPN experts took the Vikings.

YOU KNOW WHO SHOWED US LOVE?
GMC in his first gig on national TV, was the only “expert” to pick the Bucs. Love that dude.

  57. RSJCheapSeats Says:

Everyone kind of did give up on Baker – and for good reason.

Baker’s play early in the game made me longing for Jamies (which I didn’t think was possible). He held the ball too long (something he did in Cleveland far too much).

But Baker was damn good in the second half.

My guess is we will talk about good Baker a lot this season.

The Defense played pretty well against what was the 7th best offense in the NFL last year.

There is no way not to regard the win as a good sign. Long season – but that was a win against a 13-4 team in their stadium.

  58. RSJCheapSeats Says:

Should have added that Peter King is a very good journalist and the players (including Tom Brady) seem to respect him.

But journalists are not known for good predictions.

But at the end of the day anyone who isn’t showing you their winnings from draftkings is talking through their butt about their predictions.

  59. Cchead Says:

King is just another masshole. Buck Foston.

  60. Dave Pear Says:

Peter King does have an impressive rack. Kudos for the above. Get him a manzier with a Bucslogo.

Baker probably embarrassed him, or called him out some time ago. Fat but microscopic Peter.

  61. westernbuc Says:

I was absolutely thinking about Peter King after the win yesterday. What a loser.

Licht signed him to be a starter. Bowles signed off on it. These are Super Bowl winning executives and coaches who built a great roster around TB12. The idea that they suddenly forgot how to win is laughable at best.

I don’t think we’re going to the Super Bowl or anything, but we’ll be competitive for the division. And Baker is a huge reason why.

  62. DFW Buc Says:

PK…. Don’t listen and don’t care about what this talking head says. Yes he has become a useless winer. Not sure if it is buying into the coolade of politics or something else. I am glad that by not listing his long name Joe shows his lack of importance. I am glad for a win and film that should help our team this week.. Glad also that the Bears looked like a team with major issues. Go Bucs!

  63. Duane in Sanford Says:

Ignoring the cup of coffee he had with the Rams last season, Todd Bowles could actually be the best head coach he has played under- that should be some serious food for thought.

  64. Bucsfan951 Says:

Bucs are the red headed step child of the NFL…lol

  76. Mike S Says:

Seriously don’t peacock strut with 245 yards of total offense.

That might not get it done against Chicago – who has a much better defense than Minn and won’t turn the ball over as bad they looked.

  77. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Vikings lost to a playoff team too…so that means nothing.

Still not slightly sold on Baker Mayfield. 70% of the game yesterday, he played horribly.
