Baker Mayfield Scored Multiple Victories

Baker Mayfield won a lot more than the game today.
Joe is very confident of that.
No matter what Mayfield’s Bucs teammates said of him publicly between mid-March and this morning, none really knew what to expect when they got into a real game with Mayfield.
Most had to have a level of doubt. It’s not like Mayfield has a great resume or a bunch of former teammates on the Tampa Bay roster.
Today was a day for players to see whether Mayfield would really put his life on the line to win a game for them, and if he had it in him to step up under adversity. He did both.
Joe would challenge any fan to study the CBS video of Mayfield’s late-game scramble for a first down on 3rd-and-2. He rolled right and didn’t see anyone open, and then he took off.
The vicious hit clearly coming from the Vikings linebacker was not in Mayfield’s brain. He was all-in for the team and didn’t shy away and head for the sideline.
First down, Tampa Bay! And the sideline erupted as the video shows below.
It really is Mayfield’s team now. It needed to happen for the Bucs to play their best ball, but it’s great it came in Week 1.
That should bode very well for these next three games before the Week 5 bye.

Mayfield won me over not by touchdown passes or anything else today. It was the two run plays to move the ball. He showed real grit.
Bucs won today because f much better Oline play and a defense that did not collapse in the second half. Optics from game one is this defense can be really good this year, and if the Oline continues to improve watch out. Nice win!

Good win. Baker gets a B from me. His first half was almost an F. Good last drive.
We need to celebrate DWhite, Winfield, Evans, every rookie, Goedeke (pancake maker), and both kickers.

245 total yards of offense against the 2022 28th ranked defense.
Its in the win column though.
Baker played his best game in the second half, but against decent defense and a team that doesn’t turn the ball over Bucs get blown out today.
Double digit losses even after winning next week against the hapless Bears in my prediction.

He could have pouted and crucified his oline for their play in the first half, but instead did a bunch of the dirty work to help his guys out. To me, his play reminds me of Jeff Garcia.

If this effort is there consistently it could be a fun season. It sure felt like our rookies and newcomers were everywhere on highlights for usually good reason. Hope Kancey man can isn’t hurt too bad. Turned the game in like 10(?) snaps.

Tim Tebow School of Quarterbacking… Godwin bailed him out to end the game. But yeah, he’ll make a play running the ball.
There was a 3 turnover advantage. This game shouldn’t have been close. Baker leaves a lot to question. It takes more than desire.

I just hope the Bucs can address the issues on the OLine. I think Baker can be a lot better if he can get a little protection. Both sides off the line were not picking up the Blitz. Needs to be fixed. Also, Keift was something like 0 for 3.

Baker sucked most of the day, missed a lot of wide open passes, but didn’t throw the game away with stupid plays. Baker will get the credit though not really deserved.
Our defense came up with some huge turnovers a couple of them were unforced, but those were the deciding factors to the game. I was happy we turned up the pressure in the second half, our dline is not getting enough pressure on their own.

Baker did fine and can lead a team. But the Oline needs work. As others have said, a better defense will beat our Oline and mayfield’s grit/moxie won’t be enough.

The sad things about playing Baker with such win as today;
1. Enough wins to keep Bucs out of first round draft pick.
2. Keep their young qb, Trask on bench.
3. Bucs will be in the same position next season having an inexperience Task with a trash inconsistent Baker.
4. Toilet Bowles will still be the coach with a 8-8 or 9-8 record.

That sideline eruption says it all. Just scrubbed the video to catch everyone’s reaction. The players’ reactions were awesome, but Canales didn’t even celebrate. He was on to the next play. I think I like that, I wonder if Cousins likes that?

I don’t know how many comments on this Twitter/X…what’s the Asperger’s guy calling this week?..are Buc fans but the comments were largely very positive.
This is one that should help Joe. Like others here Joe is tired of “moxie” describing Baker. I agree and so I suggest we start using what one poster used on X…another cliche but more accurate IMHO.

Wasn’t a fan before the TD to ME13 I was ready to start hollering to bench but those 2 runs deff made me rethink a little bit. I’m rooting for him but still on the fence as a fan of his. I almost really lost it when he missed a wide open TD pass to kio. Can’t miss thoughs but he came thru. Let’s go

Relax, it’s one game. I am not a hater. I am just realistic, he’s been in the league for a while. Led a team that was ready for the Super Bowl, but didn’t make it because of him. He has not shown that he is consistent enough week in and week out to be a # 1 QB.
I hope I am wrong and he becomes the greatest Buccaneer QB ever.
I’m just realistic and highly doubt it. My money says they will be drafting a quarterback next year.

He was gritty and had a great run and some nice throws but he also missed a wide-open TE in the seam for a TD that cost them four points and missed hitting Evans on a wide-open third downplay that could’ve led to points.
Godwin made an awesome catch on third down but with a more accurate throw he wouldn’t have had to.
They won and there’s obviously room for improvement everywhere but he’s got to be more consistent and accurate.
I’m really not trying to be pessimistic. I’m very happy for the win. I’m just going to need to see several games before I don’t think they’re going to draft a quarterback next year.

The good. The bad. The ugly. All three describe Baker personally and the rest of the team as well. It was a battle between two teams going nowhere. But nobody gave up. Both teams gave every thing they had. Both teams will struggle against teams that are middle of the pack or higher. I wanted Trask to play the second half. But Baker finally got his sheet together in the second half. Not sure yet if he is good or bad, but at least he isn’t a quitter. BUT ITS A WIN!!!! And next week should be too. 2 and 0. That would be a great start. The run game struggled. The pass game improved substantially in the second half. Hope springs eternal. Go buckeroos!

Baker is all heart…to his detriment in Cleveland when he played hurt all year. Love how guys here cherry pick his performance with “yeah buts”. First game of the year and it showed early ….just ask Mike Evans. This team is showing character. And the NFC has been put on notice. We ain’t tanking!

A offensive coordinator who just won his very first game and called plays for the first time.
A QB who has played 3 to 5 possessions in preseason.
Against a team that was favored and has a huge home field advantage.

2TD’s and no picks. That’s a win for him. We might have a chance to make the playoffs in our weak division. But the only problem is he is a bandaid for us to find another qb. He is not good enough to ever win us a title. So that’s the dilemma.

Baker looked gritty, gutsy, and willing to lay it all the the line and that’s what this team will need from everyone going forward and we will have a really fun/successful season.

6 dropped passes by Bucs recievers, including both Evans and Palmer dropping passes that hit them in the chest. Baker never panicked. Today he outplayed Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow and Deshaun Watson at a fraction of the cost. Hell, he played better than Pat Mahomes did on Thursday against the Lions.
There were some struggles, but much of that was also protection issues caused by a good gameplan by Flores. Baker adjusted and came out strong in the second half, and was the leader the Bucs needed.

So, here’s the thing:
Celebrate the win. Truthfully, I expected a win in the first game. I even agreed it would happen.
A few days ago, I even said that the fans who like Baker would set themselves up for disappointment after the win by bragging and calling haters out.
Check.
So here is a good dose of reality
The Bucs beat a realky bad team today. Really. There were two bad teams on the field, so it looked competitive…but…the Bucs still only barely beat the other team today.
Baker Mayfield played like a rookie QB…a lot of misses, and then a surge in hurryup offense. Winston did the same early on.
The stiffarm run? Winston did a lot of those sort of runs early on, and he even did run blocking as well.
No, I am not saying Winston was good. I’m saying he was bad, but he had a few good moments.
That is what Mayfield has done his entire career.
So what’s next?
• Teams already know how to beat Mayfield. What hapoens when they start blitzing him with this offensive line?
• Tipped passes will increase.
• Defensive pressure is going to steadily increase over the next few weeks.
• Mayfield is going to scramble a lot more. Injury is at high risk.
• Lots more bad throws coming. Bake Mayfield of the early game is thw one he really is.
But enjoy for the week. Reality is coming.

Scrappy, tons of heart, fiery, and just enough mobility. We haven’t had this from the QB position in years. Last year’s Bucs would have lost this game by double digits.

You ask, what happens when defenses start blitzing? I take it you didn’t watch the game? Flores was blitzing the Bucs from the opening snap and didn’t stop. Everything you stated against Mayfield was wishful thinking. Mayfield was very Jeff Garcia-esque. He shaddd very few commonalities to Winston. Go follow another team if you can’t be objective and are gonna hate for no reason.

I looked at this game like a 4th preseason one with the roster set. But, wait a minute! That Viking offense got them in the playoffs last year. They have totally cleaned house on their defense. They’re not cupcakes. For the Bucs D to shut that Bike O down in the second half is pretty awesome if you ask me! Especially that Jefferson dude cos he was a killer in the first half.

Those fans were so loud in the first half. So its no wonder we had a hard time. But you know we showed a lot of grit and won the damn game. I am proud of these guys. Great run by Baker. And a even better catch by Godwin on the last drive. Still need to run better
