“It Didn’t Happen Playing Football”
September 8th, 2023There’s more clarity today to the Buccaneers’ murky situation at right guard.
Rookie starter Cody Mauch’s back issue is “spasms,” Todd Bowles said today. Mauch is possible for Sunday, Bowles said, but Bowles didn’t sound optimistic.
The injury, he said, came out of nowhere.
“It didn’t happen playing football,” Bowles said. “[Mauch] bent over in a stance and he went down.”
Veteran Aaron Stinnie is the likely replacement, Bowles said.
Stinnie, 29, has a Super Bowl ring and started three games at right guard during the 2020 postseason. However, Stinnie blew out his knee (ACL) only 12 1/2 months ago. Yes, he’s healthy. But how healthy?
September 8th, 2023 at 1:09 pm
Another stellar draft pick by Licht…. Just like our first rounder who may or may not play Sunday.
September 8th, 2023 at 1:12 pm
Damn you Licht!
He should have totally predicted a back spasm from this guy in early September when he had no history of spasms and was healthy all offseason.
What an idiot! Other GM’s read the future!
September 8th, 2023 at 1:14 pm
I had something similar happen when I was in the military and couldn’t walk for a week. Then I was fine until it happened again a year later. Get well soon, Cody!
September 8th, 2023 at 1:14 pm
Stinnie played pretty well this preseason. Not great – but OK.
Back problems before week 1?… How will Mauch’s back feel after week 18?
Total bummer…
September 8th, 2023 at 1:16 pm
Hopefully he doesn’t try to play and then make critical mistakes. Sounds like he blew it out ibut it’s non football related? Come on man 2 days before yhe Vikings??? Wow 4
September 8th, 2023 at 1:17 pm
Because we all know how great the Bucs medical staff is, right, Lord Cornelius..
Ask Jensen about that one..
Other GM’s have a damn clue…
September 8th, 2023 at 1:22 pm
The majority of the comments I read on here are just hysterical. A rookie gets injured and all of a sudden he’s a bust?
September 8th, 2023 at 1:23 pm
This is Byron Leftwich’s fault, I’m quite sure.
September 8th, 2023 at 1:35 pm
You’re right TBBF!
It is CLEARLY Byron Leftwich’s fault! That guy continues to plague us! Probably voodoo or he slipped into the looker room and spread more of his patented “bad luck, bad decision making” creep sauce around the place just after they thought they washed that plague away… Probably dress up as a hooker to full their guard house guys. Offered up some free samples and that’s how he slipped past them.
Freaking Leftwich Strikes again!
September 8th, 2023 at 1:50 pm
I’m certainly not calling Mauch a bust, but man, to start suffering back spasms before he’s played a single snap? Very alarming. Back problems are the last thing you want in a lineman.
And to have literally every rookie miss time already due to injuries is not a good look. I know Licht can’t predict things like this, but still really frustrating and disheartening.
September 8th, 2023 at 1:55 pm
This is hilarious. The last 2 seasons have been a MASH unit in Tampa. The Vikings have virtually nobody on the Injury Report. We are the brittle Bucs.
September 8th, 2023 at 2:15 pm
Gotta take it easy on the ladies, cowboy.
September 8th, 2023 at 2:45 pm
The guy has back spasms and it’s Jason’s fault.. we have got to have the dumbest fan base in the nfl

Country boy meets Tampa gentlemen’s club scene…his back is not the only thing with spasms.
September 8th, 2023 at 3:20 pm
He needed more ‘rest’?
September 8th, 2023 at 3:33 pm
Given the physical conditioning programs that these players participate in, perhaps the weight and stress of expectations tensed up the muscles in Mauch’s back. He’ll be fine. The fact that it happened just before his first NFL start suggests just that.
September 8th, 2023 at 3:34 pm
Old Lefty is good punching bag. Well done.
September 8th, 2023 at 3:36 pm
“Because we all know how great the Bucs medical staff is, right, Lord Cornelius..”
You think a person’s first non-contact back spasms unrleated to activity is on a professional NFL medical staff lol?
The length’s people go logically to support being a negative hater nancy is hilariously weird to me.
Are you “the Buc Realist” reincarnated? That guy was an active negative nancy poster for years and then dissapeared after we won the SB. Same with a few others.
Now it’s like prime time season for you guys lol like you love this crap it’s werid

Lol this is a good entertaining take at least
September 8th, 2023 at 3:39 pm
Fragile draft so far. If you’re not on the field, it’s a wasted pick.
September 8th, 2023 at 4:18 pm
About 15 years ago, out of the blue, I started having bad neck spasms. After about a month an MRI revealed 3 ruptured discs in neck, requiring fairly urgent surgery.
I hope Mauch’s spasms are only muscular in nature, but I remember how shocked I was (and the neurosurgeon) to find out the spasms were caused by bad discs.
Let’s hope he heals up quickly.
September 8th, 2023 at 4:51 pm
I hear he injured his back while doing his farm chores – shovelin manure, totin hay bales, and such.
September 8th, 2023 at 4:57 pm
The kid is from the north, is playing with grown men, and has been active since he was drafted. Its likely wear and tear. A tough hit to start the season, but at least we have a game and a half out of Stinnie before he hurts something.
September 8th, 2023 at 5:02 pm
I’ve had them before after an average day. Just started for no reason. Had to go to ER for a shot and muscle relaxers. Took it very easy for a few days. BTW, how can someone be a bust when he hasn’t even played a game? What a stupid statement!

First time here? LOL.
Yea, our fans are certainly not the brightest, nor most rational. Though to be fair, the word “fan” does come from “fanatic”…
September 8th, 2023 at 5:34 pm
Deff not the brightest fan base haha so tru
September 8th, 2023 at 5:35 pm
All you guys are overthinking it.
This is a kid that doesn’t get his teeth fixed because he’s too cheap.
So he moves to Tampa, and I bet you anything he bought some $229 mattress in a box he got delivered to his apartment, probably set it up on the floor, not even in a frame, and just found out why those mattresses are $229, delivered.
I know if I sleep on some cheap mattress my back is spasming as well.
September 8th, 2023 at 6:35 pm
Oh darn, if he had only gotten a sleep number bed. . .
September 8th, 2023 at 6:39 pm
Im sure he will be fine. Now maybe if there was something else on top of the spasms then there might be a long term issue. If they said back spasms with numbness or loss of feeling then that sounds like serious back problems.
September 8th, 2023 at 6:41 pm
I’m confused. “It didn’t happen playing football,” Bowles said. “[Mauch] bent over in a stance and he went down.” So which is it?
Pretty sure if he bent over to get into his stance he was playing football right? So I guess Bowles is saying it’s not an off field injury? But it didn’t happen during a play? This team is so weird.
September 8th, 2023 at 7:13 pm
Couple pain pills and some cortisol and you’ll be fine, Cody.
Suit up and stop being a little bish
September 8th, 2023 at 7:15 pm
Rod … ‘I know if I sleep on some cheap mattress my back is spasming as well.’
Got a solution Rod. Don’t sleep on cheap mattresses.
Just saved you a doctor’s visit. You’re welcome.
September 8th, 2023 at 7:23 pm
Rod Munch…. If I remember correctly in interviews with Mauch. He basically said his teeth are now part of his persona. He embraced it in college as something he was known for. Now I’m not comparing Mauch to Micheal Strahan in anyway. But Strahan embraced his gap and it became part of his persona. It was something interesting about him that made him a good interview.
September 8th, 2023 at 7:52 pm
Rod Munch…The mattress comment makes sense.
September 8th, 2023 at 7:53 pm
The draft is hit or miss, but we seem to miss a lot.
September 8th, 2023 at 7:57 pm
I’m not against Mauch per se and am sorry he is injured from some type of mysterious non football injury, but I simply do not understand why Jason insists on using higher draft picks on guys from small schools. I’m sure Mauch will develop in time, but why not get linemen from the SEC or another big conference if you expect them to start right away?
September 8th, 2023 at 11:58 pm
Don’t know anything about Mauch’s history but a lot of guys (my self included) had to carefully warm up and stretch the lower back muscles before any deep bending. And if you tweak a psoas muscle on either side it can linger a long time. And worse yet is a bulging disc. L2 and L3 cost me a whole season one year. My lower back has been a chronic issue long after I stopped playing competitive sports. Hopefully he only has muscles spasms and not a bad disc.

Lets bear in mind that rookies in todays NFL have had virtually no break form the end of the college season last year. Solid footall stuff between college season combine, Mobile for many, Pro days OTAs (Maybe a respite) But for most still working in drills and the weight room.
Hope it’s just his body telling him enough already. And I am a firm believer that your body does speak to you at times and you should listen.
Go Bucs!
September 9th, 2023 at 3:49 pm
Put Kyle Trask in at guard. From what I have read in the comments section on this site he is 10 ft tall, has the strength of 12 men and poops gold. Sounds like there is nothing that kid can’t do….I mean other than start at qb.
September 9th, 2023 at 8:11 pm
Lap Dance injury for sure.
Lets see what Stinnie has and let the rookie learn from the bench until the bye week so we don’t rush him like the Bucs did with Goedecke last year. Then see if Stinnie, Mauch or Leveritt can claim the job this season.
If Stinnie goes down Leveritt is warming up in the Bullpen.

Serous bs hiding behind a keyboard slick mouth no faith n didn’t even wanna read all the negative crap that has nothing to do with the team. These negative Nancy’s are representing our team?
