Worrying About The Next Play

September 7th, 2023

Next play mentality.

It seems Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales, in the heat of practice, doesn’t believe in looking at the past. Worry about the next step.

Baker Mayfield said that next step is the next play. Control what you can control, says the Bucs’ starting quarterback, Max out what you can max out.

That’s the message Mayfield gets from Canales and Mayfield believes Canales’ energy and focus on the next play may be what helps him recharge his career.

“His mindset – he’s so positive – it’s just the next-step mentality,” Mayfield said. “The next play, make it the best one. Even if it’s just a simple handoff where we’re not doing anything besides carrying out a fake, make it your best one.

“That mindset to give it absolute 100% each time, it’s refreshing, even though it might be an off play for us, we still carry our weight and we’re still a factor in it, so do your business. He’s so fresh and that mindset is awesome.”

Canales wants Mayfield to put every play — good or bad — the future is the next play.

Hopefully, Canales can help Mayfield to forget the past two years and worry about that ever-present next play.

Mayfield has a fresh start with the Bucs. And the next play is, in theory, another fresh start.

Worry about the next step … Don’t look back (crappy Boston album by the way) … Control what you can control … It all sounds rather trite if you ask me.

    Mayfield says,
“That mindset to give it absolute 100% each time, it’s refreshing, ”

Wait…isn’t the goal of PROFESSIONAL football to give 100% every play? And Mayfield finds this type of thinking “refreshing?”

Both of you guys are over-thinking this. It’s a throw-away comment before the start of a new season, new QB and new OC.

How has Joe not reported on Shaq Barrett’t contract restructure?

I know it is early and the season has yet to begin, but Canales is a breath of fresh air. If he and the Bucs do well, I hope another team doesn’t snatch him up.

Felipe – Coaching & Parenting seems to be 92% trite euphemisms…

..but with the right trust built, that’s about 92% of what you need, I think.

  7. HC Grover Says:

The pre season Buc Babble ends Sunday.

  8. Craig Says:

Only a couple more days to see if it is a dream or a nightmare.

My big problem is in sustaining drives and I have not seen Baker do that since his lone playoff season.

There is no such thing as a steady diet of splash plays, so I will cross my fingers and hope, maybe by the time the bye comes around we will be in a good place.

Has Sneak Vaughan been cut yet? Bring back Ronnie Brown.

  10. Bucs4Life Says:

I hope the guy just absolutely kills it this year and gets to hold up that middle finger salute to the lot of ‘em. Bucs got your back baby! Go Bucs!

I’ve been one of Todd Bowles harshest critics. But I will give him props when he deserves them. That said, his hiring of Dave Canales might very well end up being the best decision he’s made since becoming HC! DC brings the positive mental attitude that was sorely missing from this team last season. This season should be way more entertaining to us Buc fans!

Starting to think Canales has a screw loose. Every QB in the league has to have a compeitive streak or they would not be in the NFL. Heck even Jaymiss had it.

    Go Bucs!

Different screw than Leftnut but… Rah Rah doesn’t necessarily equate to wins. Ask Raheem, every players bestie.

    Go Bucs!
