“Kyle Has Earned A Lot Of Locker Room Cred”

August 26th, 2023

Kyle Trask is a well respected NFL backup quarterback.

That was the happy pregame message for Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht, speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Licht explained that starting quarterback Baker Mayfield and Trask “had a hell of a camp” and their competition was valuable.

“Baker’s been really good and Kyle has earned a lot of locker room cred for the way he competed and what he’s done so far,” Licht said.

Joe knows all those first-team and preseason reps were fantastic for Trask. The improvement in his game was obvious, but the confidence growth was obvious. And that confidence is critical for any backup quarterback. If you don’t 100 percent believe you can play QB and win in every scenario, then your odds of success are poor and your teammates will sniff your weakness in a hurry.

Was the sharing of reps good for Mayfield? Joe sees how Mayfield was 14-of-15 in preseason with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. That’s not the look of a guy not ready to play two weeks before opening day.

  1. BRYAN KOHN (GAMBINO) Says:

    TRUE!

  2. Austin Says:

Very pleasantly surprised in both QBs… Canales play calling is night and day and going to be fun to watch… and as for Trey Palmer, steal of the draft

  3. Steelers fan Says:

Trask is the future of the bucs. His numbers in preaseason are great wonder what they would look like without all the drops. That drop for a td at the end of the game was like a knife in the heart.

  4. Steelers fan Says:

Trask proved himself in the preseason and thats something Baker has yet to do.

  5. Steelers fan Says:

    Imagin Trask with starters…LOL

  6. RGA Says:

I noticed Bakers go to was Godwin and he was out when Trask entered the game. The Bucs brass has for some reason not given their late 2nd round draft choice premium opportunities at all through his three years in the league. At least they left the starting offensive line in on his touchdown drive, that was a first for Trask.

  7. Serg Says:

Trask played with 2nd string players because he is a 2nd string himselfšŸ˜‚. Not hard to grasp. Backups usually play with backups

  8. SB~LV Says:

Iā€™m impressed with what he has accomplished with so little work with the number ones on the roster.
He has had a great preseason

  9. RGA Says:

Youā€™re correct Serg, got it. No reason to take a hard look at your drafted QB when you can bring in a retread with a sketchy record.šŸ‘

  10. RGA Says:

Yes, Trask has shown well. Mayfield is the designated starter and Iā€™m behind him 100%.

  11. chark Says:

I am pleased with what trask has done and that doesnt mean I think he is better than mayfield

  12. Proudbucsfan Says:

I initially did not have any faith in baker mayfield but he has played good so far and he is our starter so Iā€™m going to back him 100%. I however am very impressed with Kyle Trask, as stated by Joe many times he is a different quarterback this season. I do believe we have 2 starting caliber QBā€™s on this team. If Baker goes down Iā€™ll not be worried one bit. Thatā€™s something I havenā€™t been confident in saying for a very long time.

  13. Sly Pirate Says:

Awesome. Another QB story about Baker starting and Trask being good.

    Yawn.

    The real stories are ā€¦
JTS looks legit. Shaq and JTS could feast!
The running game produced impressive average yards per run.
The OL looks better and better each week.
The once concerning DBs depth doesnā€™t appear to be a concern.
The Bucs have a FG kicker.
    Canales could be special.
We havenā€™t seen Evans in the preseason.

  14. David Says:

Scam competition. Baker plays two short fields in less than a quarters in three games with two TDā€™s and win the qb1.
Trask becomes qb2 making playing majority of pre season games with three TDā€™s going cross the fields starting deep in his own side of field and plays mistake free except a pick on 3rd and 19.
Trask wins the training camp td to Int. ratio.

  15. Delusional Intelligence Says:

Wait, I thought if you have 2 quarterbacks, you have none?!?!?!?

I thought the play calling for both QBs was pretty good. OL play was a lot better than last week. Guess no one wanted to put out bad tape!

  16. Hodad Says:

Oh stop with the unfair competition. I was pulling for Trask, but Baker for right now is the better option. We should be glad both QBs are doing good.

  17. geno711 Says:

Also, JTS, Shaq, Yaya and Nelson look like they can be 4 better than average outside LB in this scheme based upon the preseason.

As DR has said sometimes, is there enough beef in the middle of the team defense.

By the way, I am hoping that in every press conference from now on and last night that reporters are asking on the status of Kancey.

  18. StormyInFl Says:

    Jesus- it wasn’t a scam.

The only way Trask was gonna win this competition was for Baker to be exceptionally bad AND Trask to play exceptionally well. That did not happen.

I’m glad this team has two QBs that can play. Even Wolford has played well. The fact that, should Baker go down there won’t be a significant drop off should make every Buc fan happy.

If you’re rooting/hoping for Mayfield to implode just so Trask can start, go find anothet team.

  19. rrsrq Says:

Baker better not falter, thatā€™s all Iā€™m saying and stay healthy, Trask showed me something.

  20. Zoocomics Says:

Trask is oozing with confidence, this so-called competition was a game-changer for Trask. He’s got some “touch” to work on as he missed wide open receivers last night, but he’s also got the size and he’s just as fast with his feet as Baker. Short yardage, QB sneak type plays, we will miss a guy of Trask’s size.

Baker is anomaly at his position and what I mean by that is QBs 6ft or less usually bring small guy abilities, twitch, speed… etc… that actually is not Baker. To me, he’s got to be good at EVERYTHING else when you don’t bring the small guy tangibles with you. This style of offense will favor him and his abilities.

  21. HC Grover Says:

Bucs looked ready for the season.

  22. WyomingJoe Says:

I love what Baker Haters say about Trask. ā€œHeā€™s the future.ā€ ā€œHe played great!ā€ ā€œHe has cred.ā€ Trask played almost the entire game and threw for only 192 yards and only one touchdown. Thatā€™s the reality. Weā€™re there a couple of balls that could have been caught by his receivers? Yes. Were there a couple of balls that should have been intercepted? YES! Did he miss wide open receivers? Yes. Trask put up an early TD but couldnā€™t put up another one the rest of the game. Heā€™s improved, but heā€™s had three years in the league to improve. Heā€™s 25 for godā€™s sake, and heā€™s not rookie phenom. Donā€™t make him out to be great because he hasnā€™t shown that. Heā€™s a capable NFL backup with (maybe) has starter potential. Damnā€¦ Iā€™m beginning to sound like a Trask Hater, but Iā€™m not. Itā€™s just that you Baker Haters wonā€™t give up on calling Baker a dog. So, Iā€™ll keep showing up.

  23. Wild Bill Says:

Hey wyjoe, Trask is virtually a rookie! For two years he was totally neglected and buried under Brady’s shadow. It’s a shame he didn’t get more playing time before now. Suddenly Brady got old and there was no one take over last season. It was painful to watch. The good news is now it looks like we have two decent qbs. It’s a long season and having young and coming back up is HUGE!

  24. WyomingJoe Says:

Letā€™s be honest. Baker Haters laugh at the idea that Bakerā€™s injury was the reason that the Browns got rid of him, and was the major factor in his decline. They also dismiss the numerous head coaches and OCā€™s that Baker had to deal with during his formative years with Cleveland and beyond. So stop with the sob story about Trask wasting away on the practice squad because heā€™s never had to deal with the pressure and ridicule that Baker did. Also, Trask can get away with throwing for only 192 yards in a game – he can even get away with throwing INTs, but the Baker Haters on this site would never cut Baker any slack.

  25. Blake c Says:

Kyle trask is HIM!!!! Iā€™ll let everyone on a little secret the Buccaneers paid 4,000,000+ incentives for a guy who led the league with 65 interceptions in the last four seasons. Kyle Trask has proved to everyone in the Buccaneers organization that he is a starter so now weā€™re just waiting for Baker Mayfield to fail. Baker Mayfield comes out of the gate with an 0-2 start or heck even a threee interception game opening. Kyle Trask will take over. If Kyle Trask doesnā€™t end up working out after taking over Baker Mayfield spots, the Buccaneers will tank. Writing is alllllllll over the wall.

  26. Blake c Says:

Also everyone needs to understand he is a ROOKIE!!!!! 23 regular season snaps. Heā€™s a rookie. Heā€™s a rookie. Heā€™s a rookieā€¦ā€¦ a rookie that soaked in what Brady was doing.

  27. frozenbuc Says:

This is all talk to try to keep Trask in Tampa because I suspect he’s going to demand a trade just like Trey Lance did. I wouldn’t blame the kid.

  28. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

All these guys crying about people hating their favorite player of all time are like a bunch of children. Anyone who actually thought that Trask had a shot at starting was fooling themselves. The coaches saw him in practice and we saw in the pre-season games and he never looked ready. The thing I noticed in those games however was he never gave up and wasn’t afraid to throw deep as a rookie, and contrary to his detractors is still one until he has a full season starting. It’s obvious they made him believe he had a legit shot and told him what he needed to fix because everybody saw the improvement. He’s still getting used to his new mechanics hence the inaccuracy on some throws but did really good with back ups so it goes to reason he’ll do even better with starters.

Baker is who he is and many people have seen him play there’s really no real truth or lies to it. He plays like Jameis so has to be controlled and from what I saw last night of Canales’ offense they’re going to run plays to accentuate his better qualities. Hopefully he doesn’t go full blown Jameis Mayfield on us. Bowles is trying to keep his job and Mayfields’ playoff experience is the safer bet. Anyone who can’t see that with Canales and either of these guys starting that our offense will be much better than last year needs to stop holding their favorite player’s “beer” because they’re really revealing what they really are, not real Buc fans

  29. D Cone Says:

Second series looked real good. Passes were quick and on target and with the creative play calling like the TE sweep probably would have done well against the 1ā€™s. Canā€™t say much more because there wasnā€™tā€™ A whole lot to see. Baker looked calm and in control.

Traskā€™s 94 yard drive looked good too. Made up for a bad throw or two with some good ones, got run support, and receivers broke tackles and moved the chain. Trask looked to be in control but it looked like his adrenaline was a bit high or he has to fine tune the hip rotation that he added to his throwing motion that Brady used to seem to throw harder in his 40ā€™s than in his 30ā€™s.

  30. Greg Says:

Trask showed why he is the #2 guy when he overthrew two guys that didn’t have anyone within 10 yards of them. You can’t do that and expect to be a starter in the NFL–horrible throws!

  31. Donā€™t tell me itā€™s raining Says:

Blake C says: a guy who led the league with 65 interceptions in the last four seasons.

Well Blake you used two numbers and both are wrong. Heā€™s played five seasons, with 64 interceptions. Now heā€™s with The Bucs. A team that most of the talking heads say is a ā€œterrible teamā€. I donā€™t believe that myself but thatā€™s what theyā€™re saying. So far Mayfield has done well as a Buc. Despite how some here act, the QB isnā€™t calling the plays. Mayfield and Trask are running the plays and playing the downs there are told. Good or bad, theyā€™re still doing what theyā€™re told. As for Mayfieldā€™s performance on THIS team, heā€™s 14/15, 106 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, 93.3%, 135.7 QBR. Just like Trask, he isnā€™t making the decisions of who plays or when. Heā€™s been allowed to play 6 series in the preseason, with this ā€œterrible teamā€ and they seem to be doing pretty well so far.

  32. Oneilbuc Says:

Greg. Every quarterback has bad throws even hall of famers you people kill me with some of yall takes lol šŸ¤£šŸ¤£. I get it you wouldn’t want him to be the starter even if he played like Payton Manning! But again the city of Tampa is a college town and that’s why you have so many people on this site that wants Kyle Trask to fail because you have a NFL team in a college town.

  33. David Says:

    Greg,
So Baker is your starter ? Do you expect a qb to throw many passes without an efficient running game and complete them all. Otherwise he is not a nfl starter. Trask is a rookie who is playing at the minimum at qb2 level as you suggested. Have you seen the qb’s from his 2021 class with so many chances to become nfl starters ?

  34. garro Says:

“Joe knows all those first-team and preseason reps were fantastic for Trask.”

Joe I think your idea of first team reps is far different than mine. First team to me means the entire first team not a mishmash with a few starters. We as regular average fans without access to practice have yet to see any first team reps with all the starters aside from a few plays against the Ravens minus ME.

Judging only from the great camp reports that you posted here I don’t think he saw many with ALL the ones. Nor did Baker.

    Go Bucs!

  35. GUBBER Says:

“YOU PEOPLE” should just give it a rest already!

No way Trask can pull that off again and again with ALL THOSE YARDS DOWN FIELD with LUCKY catches EVERYTIME! Every Single One of his catches would have been intercepted! HE GOT LUCKY WITH ALL THOSE CRAPPY, GIANT YARDAGE PLAYS! Just like he’s been doing the WHOLE TIME! PURE LUCK PEOPLE!

Mayfield is mastering the “less than 10” and NOBODY CAN DENY IT! He’s got the dinky dunk MASTERED! And I’m SICK of some of you people expecting more! What’s wrong with the way behind the line of scrimmage dinky dunk? I mean it’s blatantly boring and un inspiring BUT IT’S WORKING! HAHA! YOU PEOPLE ARE A BUNCH OF JOKERS IF YOU CAN’T SEE THE BEAUTY!

So you Trask farces go ahead and keep puking on yourselves! You are wasting our time! And how about leaving Mayfield alone and supporting him? What’s wrong with you people? BORING AND UNINSPIRING WORKS! OK!

Infact you people forget that one “beautiful” pass to Godwin in the end zone are you not? A GORGEOUS 12 yard throw! Perfect! Cant yall except perfect? And let’s ALL get behind this. And let’s ALL pray for Godwins perfect health this year because Mayfield doesn’t known how to throw to someone else! Let me guess… That’s a problem to? HEY! Take it easy on my man Mayfield…

BTW, What in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD IS WRONG WITH THROWING IT ONLY TO YOUR FAVORITE GUY? Didn’t Brady do that with gronk? He barley threw it to 8 other guys in every game! SO WHAT?

Mayfield doesn’t have to be Brady! He only has to be he! And people DON’T need to tell him who he is! He can throw it to only ONE GUY if he wants to! Whats the Problem with dinky dunk to one guy with the rare over 10 yards on 3rd and a million miles? Well whatever it is, TOO BAD! STOP COMPLAINING! Maybe will get it some other time… OK!

And I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT WELL NEVER GET BEHIND IN POINTS IN ANY GAME EVER AND DINKY DUNK WILL NOT BE CHALLENGED FOR MORE! EVER! SO STOP CRYING!

IF YOU DISAGREE WITH ELITE DINKY DUNK THEN YOU ARE NOT A BUCCANEERS FAN!

AND JUST WHY WOULD YOU EVER EXPECT MORE THAN BARLEY ENOUGH YOU DISRESPECTFUL SON OF A GUNS! HOW DARE YOU! DON’T YOU PEOPLE REALIZE IT WILL BE INTERCEPTED OTHERWISE!?! What’s wrong with YOU PEOPLE!!!??? AND YOU PEOPLE DISGUST ME WITH YOUR DOUBTFUL AND DISRESPECTFUL QUESTIONING OF SUPER LOW YEILD, DINKY DUNK YARDAGE! GET A LIFE!

THAT’S IT! I’VE HAD IT! YOU ARE NOT BUCCANEERS FANS!!! YOU PEOPLE AND YOUR AMAZING LONG YARDAGE AND HAS BEEN HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL CRAP! IT WAS GOING TO BE INTERCEPTED ON THE VERY NEXT THROW! Don’t “YOU PEOPLE” KNOW THAT!?

WHATEVER! I DON’T EVEN HEAR YOUR FEEBLE TALK ANYMORE YOU LONG YARDAGE, BIG PLAY, TRASKLEDITES!

WE’RE DONE HERE! And I’m Going to Bake A Cake!

  36. Mark Adamson Says:

I grew up around Kyle Trask’s grandfather Orville Trask and knew Kyle’s dad Mike since he was a young boy. My dad was Orville’s VP at 2 different industrial supply companies. “O” was huge with a heart of gold and one of the greatest human beings I’ve ever known, he also was a great professional football player. I’d love the opportunity to be able to sit down with Kyle and tell him some of the stories I have about his grandfather to give him an idea of what he was like and how proud he would be of Kyle.
