Warren Sapp Talks About Gerald McCoy

August 3rd, 2010

Former Bucs great and future Hall of Famer Warren Sapp made an appearance on the Yiddish-sounding King David Show with Shaun King and Toby David heard on WQYK-AM 1010.

Sapp talked about how he felt it was his responsibility to tutor Bucs first round draft pick Gerald McCoy when the two earlier this year worked out at One Buc Palace.

“I felt it was like my duty to go over and see what the kid had and give him the expectations of Tampa Bay because I left my footprint there. I know people in Tampa are hungry and crazed for football. Now is the time to build that mansion back up.

“I expect big things from [McCoy]. He’s a sponge. What I mean by that is he is absorbing the good and exposing the bad. He went on the field with me. I love his feet. I love his hands but what I love most is his attention to detail most of all. I love his love for football, his thirst for knowledge.

“I told him now it’s time to take steps. Every day you are either going to get better or you are going to get worse. Every day must be purposeful.”

Great job Mr Sapp, glad you’re still a Buc fan and approve of the rebuilding process.

  2. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Now , if McCoy becomes great, we’ll have to listen to fat boy take all the credit…

I love how everyone rips Sapp for being a loudmouth (which he most certainly is). But no one ever recognizes his loyalty to Tampa. When we faced the Raiders on a sunday night in 03 (if I remember correctly) ESPN, having the Sunday night broadcast at that time, ran an interview where Sapp said that he will always be a Buccaneer and that he bleeds Pewter and Red. Not something you hear from athletes these days.

Oh and he was the only Buc to have his name chanted over and over again in the stadium.

But morons like Radio Mushmouth will never give him his due.

Sapp daddy may not play well with others, but if you wanna learn how to play DT in the Tampa-2, who better than the best ever?

  5. MOBucs Says:

McCoy is out on the field by himself running sprints in pads and shorts. Doesn’t even have to be out there (special teams practice only)! This kid is dedicated to becoming great! I love the young leaders that are emerging for the Bucs! Great core to build a team around!

  6. McBuc Says:

@MOBUCS…That is great to hear! I think he is going to be a great pick up for years.

    @GregOlson…I agree 100%

  7. Capt.Tim Says:

Eric- exactly! Great to see the QBkilla helping out with the Manbeast! Thanks Mr. Sapp, you are the greatest Buc DT ever, and one of the greatest Buc players ever! I believe McCoy will add to the legacy of feared Tackles of the Tampa 2

  8. oar Says:

CapTim and Eric, I agree also 100%! The QBKilla was not only greatest Buc DT, but one of the greatest DT to play the game! Learning from one of the best is a great plus!

  9. Capt.Tim Says:

Great, now I’m lumped with Eric! Before it was JimBuc! Geez, I can’t win- lol:)

Radio Mushmouth you’re a DOUCH!!! Don’t you realize without the so call “fat boy” (by the way you go ahead and call him fat boy to his face, cause we would all LOVE to see what he does to you) this defense doesn’t become the dominating force it was for so long. He was one of the three cornerstones of this franchise’s defense along with Mr. Brooks and John Lynch. Not to mention that without Warren Sapp this team DOES NOT win the super bowl!

  11. Pete Dutcher Says:

Speaking of cornerstones…JOE, I would like to see a detailed article on who you think will be a cornerstone of this team in the future…the leaders that are surfacing, and why you think so.

  12. RastaMon Says:

The GBoyz would be prudent to turn over all on field operations to #99

Kudos to Sapp to want to offer advice. Kudos to McCoy to want to listen and take advice. Refreshing on both ends.

McCoy can really learn a lot from a guy like Sapp. And the fact that he’s listening to Sapp Daddy on how he can imoprve himself, really shows how mature McCoy is.
