Could a new outside linebackers coach pull the magic out of Joe Tryon-Shoyinka? The Bucs sure hope so and so do fans.
The 2021 first-round pick out of Washington is in sort of a do-or-die season. Yes, he has at least one more year on his contract.
Unless JTS has a decent or a good year this fall, the Bucs likely won’t pick up his fifth-year option for 2025. After two seasons with 37 games played and eight sacks, four in each of his first two years, JTS is much closer to Gaines Adams than he is Jason Pierre-Paul.
Bucs coach Todd Bowles said in March on the “Ira Kaufman Podcast” that JTS was getting close to the quarterback but didn’t finish what he started.
JTS fully agreed when talking to Joe this week. JTS said Bowles brought him into his office and Bowles broke down tape showing JTS how he was in position to make a number of plays on the quarterback but didn’t.
JTS is the first to admit, that has got to change.
“When you look at the film, you will see me pressuring the quarterback,” JTS said. “You’re not helping if you are not getting the sack, in my eyes.
“I don’t want just a pressure, I want the sack!”
New outside linebackers coach George Edwards is trying to simplify tasks for JTS in order to get him to finish those plays. He wants JTS thinking less and reacting more.
Thinking takes time and, as JTS said, a split second can be the difference between a quarterback escaping or a sack-fumble.
“It’s been night and day with the knowledge that he has been able to provide us in the linebacker room,” JTS said of Edwards. “He has insight into the whole history of the game on how offenses try to attack defenses.
“Speeding up our processing on the field. So we are reacting to little things that help us make big plays. Making you eliminate the hesitation and help you just go. Bang-bang.
“Football is a game of inches, a game of split-seconds. He’s been helping us with a lot of pass coverage, run stops and pass rushing. Schemes and all of that. It’s a lot of fun.”
So what are JTS’s goals? He wants to help the Bucs win the NFC South for the third straight year. He wants to play in all 17 regular season games and stay healthy.
“Get turnovers,” JTS added to his list of goals. “I want to have five takeaways. Whatever that is (fumble recoveries or interceptions). I want to get the ball back to our offense.
“And, getting the quarterback on the ground.”
Yes. Sacks. Don’t forget about sacks.

Cloud 9 isn’t physically strong enough to bring down QBs on a consistent basis. He can run around blockers on occasion.

Well, it is out there now. IF JTS doesn’t make a huge improvement at rushing the passer he is a bust and out of here.
Not impressed we are at this point with him.

How many balls have our front 7 batted down compared to other defenses……not good, I presume.

Said it many times the guy can’t tackle. Teach him to tackle and the numbers come up. Even his Draft day videos I mentioned to a friend that almost evey sack ha the QB dropping to avoid contact or JTS just ran into him , Very few actual tackles.

JTS is like a WR playing OLB. He is too slender in his build to effectively bull rush. He will occasionally run around the tackles, but will struggle to use his body weight and strength to effectively tackle the QB.

In all seriousness, I do not see the mentality of a DB55 or 99 in him. He isn’t anywhere near as interesting as Rice.
Plainly, no one believes the guy can do the job. His best option would be to stop talking until he starts doing.

JTS has always had great athleticism, but no organized plan and he often just kinda looks spastic. If he can be more deliberate and organized he will double his sacks at a minimum.

Maybe someone should tell JTS after he makes it into the backfield. He slows down and stands up straight to look around for half a second. Then he goes after the QB. Hard to go from standing on your tippy toes to tackling in one step. I swear it looked like when he got back there he didn’t know what to do. So he would slow up stand up tall and look around. Then watch the running back run away from him. In instances he got to the QB he was standing up too tall to make a move. He’s getting into the backfield he just looked lost back there.

JA, I don’t remember a Temptations song by that name, but I remember George Harrison had an album named Cloud Nine.
Anyhow, a lot of JBF posters call JTS “Plan Nine” not so much “Cloud Nine.”. I can only guess it’s because he changed his number to 9 and he never seemed to have a plan. Hopefully that changes this year.

JTS is not discipline enough to prepare for the big dogs. He need to hit the weight room n work on power n strength. If he don’t tighten up then he’s another Gaine Adams, OJ Howard, Vernon Hargreaves, Jaelon Darden bust. He play the game like a big, confused n lost kid.

And that’s exactly why I’ve been so excited about us adding George Edwards to our coaching staff this off-season. Young players like JTS have to be DEVELOPED. George Edwards has proven through a long coaching career that he can do that. Not just excited for JTS though; can’t wait to see what Shaq & Nelson & Diaby & Gill & Ramirez & possibly Watts can do with his coaching. Our interior’s already pretty well set with Vea & Gaines & Gholston & Kancey … and Hall (although I still think he’ll be used inside and outside).

we have to remember this is the first year Todd Bowles will have HIS choice of coaches. unless there is a seriously great coach on horizon, dont replace Bowels just because.

If JTS can stay healthy there is no doubt in my mi d JTS can get 8+ sacks this season.
Todd Bowles is correct. Watch the film. JTS is in the backfield causing pressure on a regular basis. He just needs to take his foot off the gas a little bit and maintain control at the point of attack…

We shall see what he does this year, but again, for a guy who was super green, didn’t play much in college then took off a year because he was afraid of getting a cold, to have 8 sacks in his first two years isn’t bust material – not yet anyways. He still has some potential and can certainly improve, as people have said, he got to the QB but didn’t get the sacks, so just finishing plays will boost those numbers quite a bit.
Go back to when the pick was made and I wasn’t a fan – but I’m not ready to throw him under the bus at this point. To me, he’s shown just enough (barely) that I think he can still became a useful player, even if he’s not a star.
With that said, I hope YaYa comes out and takes the job and is awesome – because he’s on a cheap contract for 4 years.

JTA knows what he should be doing. He has the quickness but lacks the power and technique. That is why he is ridden out of plays so often. A great deal of work will be required before he is a good pass rusher. The question is whether his development is worth waiting for.

JTS said that title because he has heard it from everybody.
It’s no secret, which makes what he needs to do easy.
People throwing the word BUST around is just rude. What a bunch of girly Couch Potatoes. You guys can’t find your own sack, much less one in the NFL.
