“The Guy Got Me Out Of Character”

Intense day for the Buccaneers’ inside linebacker tandem.
Fight after fight after fight today at Buccaneers practice against the Jets in New Jersey, the most Joe has ever seen. And it wasn’t just two guys getting after it and getting pulled away quickly.
What stunned Joe is that among the roughly six skirmishes, (Joe stopped counting and couldn’t see every rumble on two fields), Lavonte David was a big player in two of them.
David snuffed out a Jets run to the left early in practice and Jets tackle Billy Turner didn’t like it (video below). Turner was the instigator after the whistle and David snapped. Later, Joe watched David literally hunt down a Jets player following a special teams period, ironically after David was resting, and that prompted another hassle larger than the one showed below.
David wasn’t proud of his behavior.
“Man, an unfortunate situation. Out of character, man. The guy got me out of character,” David said. “At the same time, you can’t take no stuff from nobody; you know what I’m saying?”
Joe talked more to David about what was happening (not for public sharing). Overall, Joe feels good about the intensity level on defense after a rough start to what was only a 7-on-7 period against the Jets.
Devin White? Man, Joe really saw him stand out with his speed and pursuit.

LVD brings it so I am not worried about it. As long as White is more focused on football and less on loafing that is also good.

We knew that the Bucs would have a huge chip on their shoulder. I think this will be a fast, hard-hitting, psychical defense. I don’t want to see them fighting but I love the mindset

Man, I love the grit so far on defense. We have all the right pieces to be a hardcore defensive unit this season. Maybe even top 5. Let other teams underestimate us that only works until you get punched in the face

This team has a chip on their shoulders. Im sure the Jets are frontrunning. Everyone is going to try and big brother this team that they think is in decline. Respect to our veterans for setting the tone that this team is not rolling over for anyone. Looking forward to the rivalries with the teams in the NFC South.

The Bucs have 9 players who could be legitimately considered All Pro quality. Six on defense, three on offense. Very talented. They should be easy favorites to win the division.

Dear Bucs: When engaging in a fight with the opposing team who is wearing helmets, be sure you have yours on, too. Sort of makes sense, doesn’t it?
