Quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Until the Bucs faced the Steelers to open the worthless preseason, Joe thought he had a pretty good read on the summer quarterback play of veteran Baker Mayfield and upstart Kyle Trask.
Trask was out-practicing Mayfield. Not by a lot, but a little. Not enough to be knighted the Bucs starter if the two were competing based solely on their play.
Then Mayfield goes out and plays well against the Steelers. Trask? He struggled more than he made plays.
Then on Sunday, the first Bucs practice since Friday’s game, Mayfield was strong. Trask wasn’t as strong.

Baker Mayfield easily outplayed Kyle Trask in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ preseason opener. It was a composed effort from Mayfield and a scattershot one from Trask, who is expected to start the second preseason game. Mayfield reportedly kept his improved play going in Sunday’s practice and appears to be creating separation in this competition.
More will be seen when the Bucs scrimmage with the Jets tomorrow and then play the Jets on Saturday night. It’s really weird how out of the blue the second day of scrimmages with the Jets was canceled. These things are usually worked out months in advance between the two coaches.
Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said he puts more weight into the controlled scrimmage with the Jets than he does preseason games.

Smoke and mirrors to distract from the coming battle between Hot Toddies and Canales.
Hot Toddie wanted Baker, that is why he “talked” him into coming here. Hot Toddie wasn’t ever all in on Trask and was looking for any excuse to use any experience at QB he could find.
I think he forgot to tell Canales that it was a competition in name only and Canales does seem to see potential in Trask. I also think he doesn’t see any shame for riding the pine behind Tom Brady.
Hope Baker himself has turned the page and doesn’t revert to the form I have seen from him too often.

Joe, has anyone asked Bowles why the second scrimmage was canceled? Not sure I’ve seen that question be posed in any of the press conferences. Seems like both coaches would want to get the extra work in.

Oh yes ! 5 yard dink passes and 60 yards of total offense in a half is what everybody wanted to see! Did the “tide” turn? What tide? There never has been a “Tide” , not even a trickle, and we are still waiting to see Kyle as a starter as it was promised to Kyle and Us.

Sorry I didn’t see anything in that game that would make me want to start anybody. If Bowles has seen enough to know he wants baker then his expectations at the QB position isn’t much.

Mayfield was vastly superior in PS1 to Trask.

Coaches will tell you that preseason games aren’t going to show the offense. It’s a very vanilla scheme with basics passes and runs. It’s like the Pro Bowl but with a little bit harder hitting. They’re saving the playbook for week 1.
That said, this new offense is all about the dink and dunk and getting the ball into space for playmakers to work with. It’s not about the downfield shot anymore. No Biscuit walked the plank, boys and girls. This is the 21st century version of a ball control offense.

Who canceled the second practice and why? Baker will be successful in boots but not in the pocket. Trask needs to read defenses better and look off safeties.

Mayfield is a vet, he was getting where he needed to be to be at his best for Week 1. The medias (Joe particularly) portrayal of him thus far was always way off base, akin to overreacting to a players batting average in spring training.
Baker will be the man, and he’ll be good. How far the Bucs go depends highly on the OL and pass rush- the two things that derailed us last season.

At least one of the Joes conspiracy lives theories… Here’s mine.
There were two practices with the Jets originally scheduled. After the first preseason game., TB decided he had seen enough. BM played exactly the way he wants the offense to be played. Scramble and get a pass off. KT not so much. He would have preferred KT, since he chose to stay in the pocket, to just ground the ball instead of getting sacked 3 times. You know, like what TB12 did all last year. That’s how TB wants this team to play. He figures all those rookie QBs that burn his defense game after game are always mobile QBs getting out of the pocket and completing passes on the run. BM does this effectively. So that’s why BM is the QB1.
So why cancel the second practice. TB was going to have BM and KT each have a practice day with the starters and one with the backups. Since TB has decided that BM is his guy, the second practice day is not necessary.
Like 99 percent of all conspiracy theories, this one is probably not true.😁

Forgive me Trask fans, but do you honestly think that Trask is better than Mayfield? If so, in what way? Is it because he threw fewer INTs than Mayfield? Give me a break! From what I’ve read, Baker threw many more TDs than Trask. Also, Trask doesn’t have Mayfield’s arm or touch. That was painfully apparent during Sunday’s indoor practice. Just ask Mike Evans. Yes, Mayfield can dink-and-dunk when he needs to, or he’s told to, but he can also rocket the ball 65 yards down the field. Both Bowles and Canales know that, and I don’t think that they’re going to risk their careers on a “so-called rookie” because they need to win this year. If Trask does win the starting QB spot, fine. But he better really light it up because if he doesn’t, he’ll be standing in the unemployment line with his coaches. Go Bucs.

Why can’t either QB play at least one or two series with Evans and Godwin in preseason? I hate seeing them have to throw to the 2nd and 3rd stringers.

One big play that only worked because the receiver made a fantastic leaping catch and tip toe footwork does not make Baker himself a superstar. It was a big play but it was also a lot of good luck. Got to see how he does against first string defenders on really good oponent teams. Time will tell who the real Baker is when the real season begins. Trask has shown promise too but no way yet to know if he is even close to being ready for when the real season begins. I am very reluctant to get overly optimistic about the Bucs chances until they knock off a few opponents when the season begins. There is a long way to go before I see the Bucs as having any chance of being contenders.

Mayfield looked more comfortable at the start of camp. Trask caught up and passed him. Mayfield looks more comfortable in the games. Let’s see how Trask looks in game 2.

I’ve got news for you, Trask never passed Mayfield. There are a number of national reports from others who saw Baker in training camp. Many don’t agree with Joe’s assessment of Trask being slightly in the lead. But I guess we’ll find out soon. To be honest with you, I’m sick of this whole thing!

Garo scoffs at Mayfield’s yards per completion completely forgetting there were no starting receivers playing and despite that, Mayfield’s numbers were only 1.5 yards less than Brady’s were last season.
