Bucs Training Camp 2023, Practice No. 14 Notes
August 14th, 2023
Bucs offensive line coach Joe Gilbert uses an elastic leash wrapped around a lineman’s leg during position drills Monday morning.
In previous notes, Joe has stated Mike Evans is Minnesota-Ready. Well, there is a member of the defense who is also Minnesota-Ready. His name is Antoine Winfield. The fourth-year safety from Minnesota was all over the field early in practice. Almost like a one-man defense. He absolutely dominated before a rowdy group of fans for the final practice open to fans of the 2023 summer. All that and more in today’s practice notes.

* Holy Playoff Lenny. Maybe the very first practice this summer Joe noticed the Bucs did not run the ball up the middle on the very first play. Did Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales finally get bored of this? Todd Bowles? For no other reason, the fact Rachaad White did not run up the gut on the very first play of practice made this practice almost as pleasant as the strong cool breeze that lasted all morning.
* Kyle Trask tries to get a ball to Mike Evans down the left sideline and instead it was broken up by Antoine Winfield.
* Cade Otton catches a pass to the right side for about 10 yards from Trask.
* White runs left for a few.
* Cam Gill comes in from Trask’s left and gets pressure on Trask who connects with Russell Gage along the right sideline. Winfield had tight coverage on Gage to make sure the play was not successful.
* Sneak Vaughn runs left.
* Maybe it is Joe’s imagination but the offense seems to be working with a purpose this morning. Very crisp. No wasted time between snaps. Almost like a hurry-up offense but not that quick.
* Baker Mayfield throws toward Gage along the right sideline and Gage dives forward for the ball. Mayfield’s pass was a bit too far.
* Undrafted rookie running back Sean Tucker runs right for a nice piece of real estate.
* High snap but the handoff to Patrick Laird is still good as he runs up the middle for nothing.
* Backup tight end Ko Kieft catches a pass from Trask down the right side. Trask somehow completed the pass despite Winfield being all over Kieft.
* Trask throws to backup tight end David Wells to the right and Winfield breaks up the pass. Winfield is all over the place early on.
* Vaughn zig and zags and bounces his way through the line.
* Bucs defensive backs aren’t playing around this morning. Trask tries to connect with Ryan Miller and the pass is broken up by Carlton Davis.
* Patrick O’Connor chases Trask out of the pocket and Trask just throws it away.
* Undrafted rookie receiver Kade Warner runs a crossing route toward the sideline and Mayfield hits him for a good gain.
* Anthony Nelson breaks through the Bucs offensive line and forces Mayfield to throw the ball away.
* Miller catches a pass from Mayfield to the right.
7-on-7 Red zone
* Trask nearly threaded a needle. He tries to get the ball to Deven Thompkins at the goal line but Josh Hayes breaks it up. Almost looked like Hayes knocked the ball out of Thompkins’ hands. It was that close.
* Hayes, today and Sunday, had his best two practices of training camp. Too late?
* Trask to Trey Palmer over the middle and the rookie from Nebraska is immediately smacked by Winfield.
* Trask down the right seam to Otton at the goal line and its dropped. Otton has improved as a tight end, especially being able to get open downfield. He’s regressed catching the ball. It’s been that way all camp and ordinarily a case of the dropsies that lingers that long carries over into the regular season.
* Trask to Gage in the end zone along the left sideline. Gage skies for the ball, falls backward, bangs his head heavily on the turf and slowly gets up but he hung onto the ball. Fans in the nearly-full bleachers roared their approval.
* Trask connects with Payne Durham in the far right corner of the end zone. Joe isn’t sure if Durham got his feet in bounds or not. It was close.
* Trask to David Moore who crosses from the left in the end zone for a score.
* Trask got a pass to Patrick Laird over the middle and Ulysees Gilbert III dives and nearly got his hand on the pass.
* Trask rifles a pass to Kaylon Geiger over the middle on a short pass and the ball hits Geiger right in the hands and the ball bounces off of Geiger’s hands.
* White shakes and bakes to the right for decent yardage.
* White has a big fain running left.
* Trask fakes handoff and then sort of flips the ball to the left sideline into the waiting hands of Taye Barber. Not much yardage.
* Vaughn runs right.
* Sean Tucker with a big gain inside the left tackle.
* David Moore catches a Mayfield pass along the left sideline for a first down.
* Mayfield rolls left and puts the ball in the hands of Wells on the left side.
* Palmer gets wide-ass open down the right sideline and Mayfield lofts a pass to him.
* Trask throws too long down the left seam for Thompkins.
* Durham catches a short pass from Trask on the left side.
* Durham again from Trask, this time over the middle as Durham goes low to scoop up the pass.
* Tanner Taula has a big catch from Mayfield down the right sideline.
* Nolan Turner bursts through the line to pressure Mayfield. However, Mayfield gets the pass off to the right as Chris Godwin cut in from the right.
* White runs right.
* Joe Tryon-Shoyinka chases Trask to the right out of the pocket and Trask tucks and runs.
* Otton catches a pass on the left side from Trask for a few yards.
* Vaughn runs right and hits a wall of people.
* Vaughn tries to run right again and he breaks this for a touchdown.
* Chase Edmonds runs up the middle, cuts left and is gone.
* A jump cut by White as he runs up the middle allows him to get a few yards.
* Godwin catches a Trask pass to the right.
Goal line
* Mismatch: Having Devin White trying to guard Thompkins on a pass play is asking for it. And fortunately for White, Thompkins dropped this pass, though it was a tough catch. Vita Vea flushed Mayfield to his left. He tried to go low for Thompkins, who was guarded by White, but Thompkins couldn’t haul in the low throw at the goal line.
* Trask to Palmer for six down the left sideline.
* Tucker is stuffed at the line trying to run up the middle.

Sounds like both the offense and defense are starting to get the swing of it. That is good because they looked totally unprepared.

It seems like RB Sean Tucker is getting more touches in practice…
He will become the Bucs RB2 by week 1.

The Bucs were in a tight spot with the cap, being $55+M in the red. That’s like trying to buy a new car with an empty wallet. So, they had to make some tough calls, letting go of some players and reworking deals. Instead of splurging on big names, they went bargain hunting in free agency, looking for hidden gems. They also doubled down on the draft and undrafted players, trying to find young talent that fits just right.
Now, in the first preseason game, Coach Bowles sat 15 starters. Why? Two reasons: to keep them safe from injuries and to really see what the backups can do when the pressure’s on. It’s like keeping your ace pitcher on the bench to see how the rookie performs in a tight spot.

Did we have any illegal procedures for one receiver covering up another, or were those ignored, like they were in the 1st preseason game until the refs actually called two and forgot to call two others.

Guessing OK? Guessing because Joe has to follow the ball. As a result you miss a lot away from the ball. If Joe focused on one element or player, miss the entire play.
Without video, pretty much have to have three sets of eyes on each play to know what this guy did, or that guy did, or who blitzed, etc.

Joe rarely takes notes on the scrubs (third team and camp meat) because generally Joe’s readers don’t care about the scrubs. *Generally*
Will miss a play here or there because Joe’s looking down jotting down notes.

Agreed this team is making too many penalties to stand any chance of winning any game. Until this gets corrected then I give them a 2-3 win season max. I do not think that Bowles was smart to put in a rookie offensive coordinator, maybe he could of been a position coach but this team needed a seasoned, proven coordinator. Last year our offense was so bad even with good qb Brady. Now was not the time for an experiment with a rookie at OC.

Trask GOT ZERO TD ZERO!!!! W hat is UP with u ??? Baker Had a STELLAR DAY N SEVERAL TD SEVERAL!!!! HE SHINED THEY ALL REPORTED N I WATCHED VIDS OF 2DAYS CAMP!!!! GOOD GRIEF GUY!!!!

Let me say this it really doesn’t matter anymore Baker Mayfield is the starter regardless how either of them play . Kyle Trask came to a team that never developed a quarterback in franchise history let that sink in for moment . Baker Mayfield will suck more and likely the first 4 games and the tanking will begin. And next year they will draft a quarterback and they will destroy his career as well because this fan base and this organization don’t understand it takes time to develop a quarterback. It takes more than 1 or 2 years to develop a quarterback. By the year 2025 if they do draft Caleb Williams or Drake May next year you guys will turn on them and be ready to tank again. The only thing this losing franchise is good at is tanking. And crazy how the fan base wants to lose on purpose as well. We ain’t going to no playoffs this with no Baker Mayfield because the defense will be on the field to much. I hope I’m wrong but what I’ve seen from Baker Mayfield in the past he will be on his 5th team in 7 years. It’s crazy to me that some of yall have all this faith in Baker Mayfield lol 🤣🤣 again this is his 4th team in 6 years but according to some of yall it wasn’t his fault.

Mike C. It’s not about the quarterback position to me I don’t care about it but what I do know is the bucs will draft a quarterback in the first round if Baker Mayfield suck and it’s a strong possibility he will. I rather draft a offensive lineman or another DT in the first round next year. But I can promise you they’re going to draft a quarterback in the first round next year even if It’s just to sale tickets next year they’re going to draft a quarterback and I believe that will be a wasted pick according to bucs history.

Until we see Trask play a meaningful season getting his lumps which happens to all new qbs. We will not not if necessary to draft a qb. Would rather hope Trask develops into a steady starter and draft OL. This making assumptions after practicing and 1 qtr of preseason games and people are writing Trask off. Not saying he’s definitely our guy but I’m will to find out. The kid shined at UF when given the opportunity and I’m a Canes fan😂

Bucsmarly. I agree with you bro but I don’t see him getting a real chance in Tampa. They have gifted Baker Mayfield the starting job I don’t believe Baker Mayfield is better than Trask his experience puts him a little over the edge of Trask. But look how he’s going neck to neck with Baker Mayfield and Trask don’t have no real experience in the NFL at all. The past 2 years the coaches just sat him to the side and focused only on giving Brady what he wanted. And because they kiss Brady behind they let him run the whole team. Brady had more power than the coaches and GM and that’s what really hurt Kyle Trask growth. Remember when Todd Bowles said Trask use to be practicing by himself with no one showing him anything. Bringing Brady back last year was a bad idea especially when he had a secret meeting with the dolphins and this weak franchise and fan base didn’t care. So that’s why Trask can’t have a bad practice or a bad game because it’s so many people on here wants Trask to fail because he went to UF . I don’t care about what college he went to I felt the same way about Trask like did Jamies I wanted them to succeed so we can finally stop wasting draft picks on quarterbacks .

I don’t think Warner played until the 4th quarter, then dropped an easy pass. I’m not sure why people are even talking about him. He run a 4.72 40, only caught 46 passes his senior year (in 14 games) for just 450 yards, less than 10 yards per catch. The only reason he’s even in any NFL camp is because of his last name.

Warner doesn’t have a chance of making the team and I don’t see why the team would keep him around on the PS.
Geiger has more value to Canales on the PS because he can run jet sweeps and WR bubble screens with him if he is called up from the PS. Thompkins should make the main roster and provide the jet sweeps on game days.
Rakim Jarrett is simply a better prospect to keep around on the PS as well.

The vast majority of BUCS fans want to win the division and at least one playoff game. Only refugees from the proctologists office, like you, are talking about tanking before the season even starts

Fred. You might be one of the guys like me that don’t want to tank . But it’s lot of bucs fans that want to tank. And as far as Baker Mayfield goes I don’t believe he give us the chance to win he will not make it pass week 4 in my opinion because of what I seen in the past from him . He’s been gifted the starting job already which I knew they would do that anyway. If Baker Mayfield plays well wich I hope he does then it’s all good. But just judging him from past year I just can’t see it. I’m honest bucs fan all we have is what we have seen Baker Mayfield do last year. So you go head and act like Baker Mayfield has been a good quarterback. The only chance we have at wining the division is the defense and being able to run the ball and that is the only chance we have. Our defense I’m not worried about it’s the o line and the quarterback. I really hope I’m wrong about Baker Mayfield but if the game comes down to him I think we would lose .

Tanking makes for a long, boring GD year.
Baker has the highest upside by far than any other free agent choices, like Jacoby Brissett. The other side of that coin is he also has the lowest floor of all the other free agents. When he stinks he stinks all the way. Which brings in Trask ASAP. Then we will see what Trask can do. We win either way or we get a great draft pick. Very few BUCS fans are looking forward to tanking this or any year. It takes away our reason for watching the game.

Came from the defensive right side. Don’t ask Joe where he lined up or if he ran a stunt. Didn’t notice him until he chased Trask (Joe follows the ball otherwise he wouldn’t know what happened on the play).

Hope he improves this year. At least we’ve got a couple young guys, plus Gill and Barrett back this year to root for if plan 9 blows up on re-entry. Lots of competition. Imagine if they all show out. We could have some fat trade bait in a year or two at the position.

Trask was red-shirted for his first 2 years. Despite his VERY noticeable improvement from LAST pre-season, it’s all but impossible he’d be able to start this year. If Baker breaks a leg…meh
