It Wasn’t All Luke Goedeke
August 12th, 2023Joe got whiffs of the scent last year. Now even though it was a worthless first preseason game, the smell is fully in Joe’s nostrils.
Luke Goedeke is the new punching bag for Bucs fans. Joe wrote this last night as the ashes smoldered from the Steelers punking the Bucs. Joe is not going to go crazy here because, six weeks from now, is anyone really going to remember last night’s game?
Goedeke, who struggled at left guard last year, too often got humiliated last night at right tackle, especially by a rookie fourth-round pick of a linebacker Nick Herbig.
That shouldn’t be happening.
But Joe noticed on social media Goedeke getting raked over the coals for a sack on Kyle Trask. Joe can’t say that’s fair.
In the sack, you can clearly see in the video below Bucs tight end Dominque Dafney got in Goedeke’s way in trying to block Herbig. What everyone remembers is Herbig blowing past Goedeke to pummel Trask as Goedeke tried in vain to catch up to Herbig.
Dafney basically took Goedeke out of the play at the snap preventing him from getting out of his stance to attack Herbig. As a result, Herbig had not one, but two steps on Goedeke.
Even Brian Baldinger, a former NFL offensive lineman, said Goedeke was in an “impossible” situation on the play.
Should Goedeke have played better last night and should he play better from here? Damn straight! Was everything his fault? No.
But such is life in the NFL. Fans have long memories. The only way Goedeke will get fans off of his back is to start stacking up solid games.
Unfortunately, Goedeke, for now, is the fans’ new Donovan Smith.
Based on last night, Goedeke is not Minnesota-Ready.
.@Steelers @nickherbig_ played 13 snaps last night and made his time count. Off to a good start showing a great takeoff; foot quickness and a plan to win. Could the Steelers find a “steal” in the 4th round? #BaldysBreakdowns pic.twitter.com/CPPv5xsdR4

Outside of a handful of players, everyone looked suspect, even the coaches. Canales and Bowles were either looking lost, or thinking to themselves WTF is happening. I was not impressed with the Leftwich impression.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:13 pm
Cappa played terrible to starting out then turned into a very good lineman. Let’s hope gedoke takes the same route
August 12th, 2023 at 3:13 pm
Based on last night, this season is going to be a disaster. I didn’t like the way Baker looked. I didn’t particularly like the way Trask looked either and that interception was gross. Three straight runs to start, constant penalties…sigh.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:16 pm
See Cappa, preseason, 2019.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:24 pm
The question I have is why the hell didn’t the Bucs scouting staff sniff out Herbig in the draft. We need all the help we can get at edge rusher and this guy looks like a beast. 4th round pick by the Steelers.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:28 pm
Coaching was awful last night. The right side of the Oline was pathetic. Tackling was laughable. Gill was great. Trey Palmer Devin T and Geiger we’re bright spots. The RB’s would be getting a lot of love except for the fact that every single long run we had last night was called back for holding. Just an overall garbage game.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:30 pm
Unfortunately for Goedeke, he is now the new Donovan Smith for fans.
It’s funny, I never thought he was the next Donovan Smith, not for a second. But on this here corner of the interwebs (to borrow Joe’s terminology), Goedeke WILL be known as the next Donovan Smith for as long as he plays here, because once Joe likes a storyline (like the fans blaming the offensive line for the Chicago fire) or a nickname (Yaya “flame broiled chicken” Diaby, he NEVER lets go of it.
I know, I know. I can just go somewhere else for my Bucs news, but it gets old, dude.

So he’s a guy who is going to start and be a solid tackle for the next 6-7 years while hardly ever missing a game. I’ll take it.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:37 pm
Ed Ingram is Bucs ready-I can assure you of that.

^^^^^^^^
The Bucs liked Yaya Diaby more in the 3rd Round. We’ll see how it plays out, neither one has played a real NFL game, so it might be too early to judge.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:39 pm
@Rod That’s kind of how I took that statement too, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how Joe meant it.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:40 pm
I’m a little afraid that Bowles doesn’t take preseason games seriously enough to get these guys up to play well in them. Scrimmaging against the Jets should hopefully kick some sense into them.
Was nice to see some highlights from a few young players though.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:46 pm
Goedeke would have to improve drastically to become Donovan Smith. I never understood the hate there.
Goedeke looks awful, and if this coaching staff doesn’t have a plan B here, that’s coaching malpractice.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:48 pm
It was a Taxi Squad practice. It should be free admission and free Bud Light.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:48 pm
Three of our projected starters had holding penalties last night…..Goedeke, Hainsey & Mauch……that’s just not good.
Players hold usually because they are getting beat…..or they are stupid.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:50 pm
Is Goedeke Joe’s son ? He always defends him lol
August 12th, 2023 at 3:53 pm
Very unsure of himself and completely lacked aggression! Should of been a pancake block when the DE was low to the ground. Also Goedeke didn’t seem to know exactly what the play was called on a couple plays. Lining up for an outside push when the Call was inside?
August 12th, 2023 at 3:53 pm
I’m not a fan of the excuse of “look at Cappa, it took him a couple years to develop.”
A) If you’re drafting a G in the top 2 rounds, he should be ready to play year 1, and/or B) if you wan to draft a developmental o-lineman, it better be in the later rounds, and you’d better have a guy ready to go in front of him. Alas that is not the case with our dreadful Bucs. They are forcing weak, underdeveloped small school lineman into the lineup because they were early round picks and because we have no one better to take their spot.
August 12th, 2023 at 3:54 pm
Collapse for Caleb.
August 12th, 2023 at 4:03 pm
Bucs punching bags as I remember them
Ruud
Geraldini
Donavan Smith
Leftwich
August 12th, 2023 at 4:04 pm
Wasn’t there also a safety in here Joe used to call the goat? Add him to the list.
August 12th, 2023 at 4:07 pm
At this point just fire bowls and bring back ba. At least we’ll see some life out of the offense
August 12th, 2023 at 4:12 pm
I remember right before the lost decade, Sabby piscitelli used to be the punching bag for the backside of the defense. Luckily at the this pint it’s still preseason, I’m still nervous though, won’t lie.
August 12th, 2023 at 4:15 pm
Well the offensive line didn’t look good at all. What no one is talking about is the defense let the Steelers hang 27 points on them. I don’t care who was playing the defense has the upper hand early in the season. For a defensive coach this should be embarrassing! If we lost 13-7 that would be different.
August 12th, 2023 at 4:25 pm
Goedecke was also playing next to a rookie and that probably divided his attention.
Good O-linemen take a year or two to get acclimated and grow into an adult. Wirfs was an exceptional freak among those.
Goedecke looks the part, has the ability, and is smart and empathic enough to grow into a good player, especially if he only has to worry about his own space.

August 12th, 2023 at 4:48 pm
Goedeke is the classic fake tough guy…got away with shoving around 235 d-lineman while playing on a mid-major. He’s in the big leagues now where everyone is just as tough or tougher than him…with better technique.
August 12th, 2023 at 4:54 pm
To who ever keeps saying Ed Ingram. The dude did not have a good year for the Vikings last year by any measure. He allowed 11 sacks as a guard, not a tackle.
He was a rookie, so it was to be expected.
But dude, you are actlng like he is a top end pro.
At least when others on the site call for Dalvin Cook or someone they are top end guys and not just a guy.
Maybe you have watched game film after game film and talked with high end coaches on Ed Ingram. But really, get over that we did not draft him.
August 12th, 2023 at 5:08 pm
Hainsey looked even worse!
He gets knocked back, falls down, or whiffs on 50% of the snaps!
Hainsey was a slow white boy RT for Notre Dame.
He’s not athletic enough to play center!
Wtf are we doing????
August 12th, 2023 at 5:11 pm
I agree Geno711. Remember the guy who went on and on about the Bucs not drafting Darrell Henderson? His name was “Ghost of Darrell Henderson” until he bombed out of the league.
August 12th, 2023 at 5:16 pm
It sure doesn’t seem that Goedeke is a starting Right Tackle, but as I’ve said before, if he isn’t, maybe Brandon Walton is. Or someone else.
I really hope we’ve seen the last of the “Vaughn has potential” articles. I don’t blame him for all of what happened last night, but he doesn’t seem like an NFL player to me.
August 12th, 2023 at 5:19 pm
Boy I know Cam Jordan is foaming at the mouth!
August 12th, 2023 at 5:20 pm
Goedeke is Big Sus
August 12th, 2023 at 5:20 pm
I agree. It wasn’t all Goedeke. There were others that sucked also last night.
August 12th, 2023 at 5:24 pm
Feel bad for the coaches as they are going to have to take the heat with a crap win loss record because of bad drafting
August 12th, 2023 at 5:25 pm
5-12, maybe 6-11
August 12th, 2023 at 5:41 pm
Goedeke got schooled. Hopefully he learns from this.
August 12th, 2023 at 5:56 pm
He should be so lucky. D Smith was maligned by Bucs fans for being a walking penalty machine, and for always taking a few snaps off each game. Not for being ragdolled and abused all game long (not usually, anyways).
Goedeke has a long way to go to even get to D Smith levels of hate lol.
August 12th, 2023 at 5:56 pm
Yes! Sabby the goat!
So sabby the goat.
Ruuud
Geraldini
Donovan Smith
Byron Leftwich
August 12th, 2023 at 5:57 pm
Man forget that sack as if it was the lone bad play, “the glass eater” was getting tossed around all night, him and hainsey were getting put on their backs all night.
August 12th, 2023 at 5:58 pm
Goedeke is not ready to start and he has slow feet. Mauch looked lost. Kieft was a disaster and can’t catch. I would hate to be a RB or QB with this line. Good thing Mayfield can rollout and run.
August 12th, 2023 at 6:12 pm
“Fans have long memories”
So true, but they also have very short memories and limited brain bandwidth for starters. So that’s a blanket statement and isn’t the full truth or case. Fans are a mixed bag and on edge and unhinged.
So your statement is true at fave value, but not nearly the full or absolute or even balanced truth. Fans are just crazy tbh.
Slice it however you want, but not nearly the full pie either!
August 12th, 2023 at 6:18 pm
Goedeke had a rough outing on Friday night.
No sugar coating it…
I am going to give him two more preseason games before I make my final judgement.
Let’s all pray he is able to figure things out by then – right now he looks like he is not physical/athletic enough to play inside and he isn’t quick/athletic enough to play outside…
I’m not going to label Goedeke a “BUST” yet but he has earned the letter “B” so far.
Another bad game next week and he will be on “BU”.
August 12th, 2023 at 6:31 pm
YUCK.
August 12th, 2023 at 6:39 pm
Kick Leverett out to right tackle they have enough depth on the inside.
August 12th, 2023 at 6:56 pm
Sasquatch said: “I’m a little afraid that Bowles doesn’t take preseason games seriously enough to get these guys up to play well in them. ”
From what I saw last season, Todd had trouble getting the team up to play regular season games too. And let’s not forget that misfired playoff game!!
I have hope things change soon! Will they? We’ll find out in 4 weeks.
August 12th, 2023 at 8:16 pm
Geodeke is not gonna make it in this league. He can’t compete at this level. Jason Licht just won’t accept it.
August 12th, 2023 at 8:30 pm
The starting turnstile named Luke Goedeke should not be blamed for everything, that is true.
But here is a stone cold fact. As an NFL offensive lineman, he makes me wish Oneil’s Cousin was back on the roster. Worse than Goedeke, I have never seen.
August 12th, 2023 at 8:47 pm
Call Caleb Beneoch
August 12th, 2023 at 9:28 pm
But, it was mostly Luke Goedeke.
August 12th, 2023 at 9:30 pm
I, Coach Toad Bowels , am making the following changes for preseason game 2
1. QB bringing back Tom Brady
2. TE bringing back Jimmie Giles
3. RT Ita Kaufman replacing Luke Goedecke
4. RG Joe of JBF replacing Cody Mauch
5. C Mauch moving to Center replacing Robert Hainsey
6. LS Goedecke is the new long snapper
7. Leftwich returns as Offensive Coordinator
August 12th, 2023 at 9:31 pm
In the immortal words of BA when it comes to penalties, “Either you dont give a $hit, or you are too dumb to play here”!!!!!
I wonder which one it is for 3 of our eventual starters this year?
August 12th, 2023 at 9:32 pm
Actually Goedecke will be fine at RT with Ko Kieft playing next to him at TE
August 12th, 2023 at 9:57 pm
Goedeke would have a hard time being fine with Joe Thomas or Paul Gruber playing next to him.
August 12th, 2023 at 11:09 pm
Goedeke was kind of left on a island by himself on the above play. The tight end was dancing around and was little help before he ran a delayed route. The only one he touched was Goedece. Its looking like we are going to need TE’s to
concentrate on helping our tackle out. Then again if you don’t play your top three WR’s you also lose a lot in the blocking scheme.
August 13th, 2023 at 7:15 am
No that is not all on Goedke people. I have never in my life seen a tight end run a screen/pick for a defensive end. I’m pretty sure that was not how that one was drawn up. LOL
One of the others he gets beat inside because he overset and had already lost by the time the rookie threw his head fake. That was also supposed to be a quick pass but Trask did not get the ball out.
The RB busted the pass pro on the other one. At least get out of the way if you are not gonna chip or pick the dude up.
I also want to say that iwe should look at the excelent play by Herbig (Why didn’t we draft him?)
Go Bucs!
August 13th, 2023 at 7:42 am
Not to be pessimistic, but I have been saying it all off season… It starts and ends with the O and D line.
Right now, the O line is nothing but a bunch of question marks besides Wirfs, and even he is at a new position. Add in a big drop off at quarterback, suspect running game, new OC… It is not looking good.
Then I hear how good the defense could be, sure. Good defensive backs with no depth. Good inside linebackers with no depth. OLB and DL… question marks. The only proven guy there is VEA, and he barely plays 55% of the time.
Looong season.
But everyone should be able to realize, regardless of what Mike Evans says, they are rebuilding with youth, because they had to get the salary cap situation under control.
Next year will be an all out, trade up to get the quarterback.
August 13th, 2023 at 12:18 pm
Sorry, But this poor guy got beat like a drum all night long out there.
August 13th, 2023 at 1:34 pm
Herbig’s moves would have worked on just about anyone. dude’s a steal
August 13th, 2023 at 1:35 pm
i hope those tight ends never see the field
August 13th, 2023 at 1:36 pm
garro – was dying for us to pick Herbig
August 13th, 2023 at 2:41 pm
That was an absolutely disgusting protection design. If that’s how they are scheming protections with the TE pulling all the way across the formation to block the backside, then Canales is the new Jeff Jagodzinski.
Goedeke was brutal.
Hainsey was weak.
They’re doing the same thing to Mauch that they did to Goedeke last year. Why the F would you draft a college left tackle and move him to right guard?
It made all the sense in the world to have Wirfs at LT, Mauch at LG, Jensen at C, Feiler at RG, Goedeke at RT.
August 13th, 2023 at 3:24 pm
Maybe Goedeke is in a bad place in the NFL. Maybe he doesn’t belong n the NFL. Maybe he needs to be sacking groceries at Publix.
Looks like it is either weakness, extremely poor technique or not responding to coaching.
One guy on a line with four pro bowlers can make the chili inedible.
August 14th, 2023 at 12:58 am
All this doom and gloom. It’s still early. If you want something to cheer you up a bit, the Bucs have a “mic’d up video of Mauch” from the Steelers game on their YouTube page. Some good pancake clips, amusing trash talking, etc.
Trust me. It’s a fun watch. The kid is relentless and I think he’ll be all right in time.
