Is Todd Bowles In A Hurry To Name A QB?

Joe pays attention when Leger Douzable talks Bucs because he played defensive tackle for Todd Bowles with the Jets and he is the pride of Alonso High School in Tampa.
He’s not a guy that considers the Bucs an afterthought on a national scale.
Douzable works for CBS Sports and he was on SiriusXM NFL Radio yesterday as a co-host. There he referenced talking to Prickly Pete Prisco, the CBS Sports insider, after Prisco’s recent visit to One Buc Palace.
He said Prisco told him of Kyle Trask outplaying Baker Mayfield on the practice field over multiple days. And then Douzable said he’s confident neither Trask nor Mayfield is the future franchise quarterback of the Bucs. (Hmmm, did someone at One Buc tell that to Prisco?)
Douzable also noted playing for Bowles and that he’s certain Bowles wants to name a starter right after the Bucs’ second preseason game.
Douzable painted the Bucs as a team stuck between a rebuild and push for the postseason — too much talent but not enough at quarterback, or cap room to buy more players. But he sees the Bucs as capable of finding their way to winning a poor division.
Joe wholeheartedly agrees that Bowles doesn’t want the quarterback competition to linger, but Joe also sees no reason to say Mayfield or Trask can’t be a Bucs franchise QB. All either has to do is play reasonably well.
Heck, if Mayfield or Trask can play solid football, Joe thinks either could be as good or better than Derek Carr over the next few years.

No sense naming a starter until we have some real live action game film to study.
I’m happy to see Trask competing and making this QB battle legit…
I still think Mayfield will get the nod week one but if he comes out on Friday and shats the bed – it could swing towards Trask.

Carr and Baker have almost the same stats, except Baker has won a playoff game and carr….. not so much.

Mayfield is a career backup. Trask could be a younger version of Brad Johnson if given the opportunity.

During camp Mayfield has been throwing interceptions and making bad decisions, both factors he’s being evaluated on. He has to have a stellar game Friday along with a bad Trask start to get the nod. Will he break away from his traditional turnover prone play? We will see.
Many say that Bowles wants Mayfield to start the season. If so, why is he allowing Mayfield to test the new offensive line? Trask will play behind a line that has at least one preseason game and a week of joint practices under its belt. And he will play with rookies not playing in their first game under the big lights. Advantage Trask.

If the Bucs don’t think either QB is the answer and really want to win this year then sign Ryan and draft or trade for a QB next year. If they want to tank, then start Mayfield. Either way this should be an interesting season with low expectations for either QB. Kind of sad that this team has talent without a decent QB.

My biggest hope is that Canales can work a miracle with our QB’s like he did in Seattle with Geno Smith. That’s a big ask.

I’d wager the next franchise face is in the 2024 QB draft class…As neither Traskcan nor Baker move the needle for season ticket holders or national media types…& the Bucs marketing dept. needs a fresh face & new hope to sell for 2024.

Trask stands a chance to be a long term QB only because nobody knows whether or not he can be. We haven’t seen him play an NFL game.
Mayfield I’m confident has used up his chance at being a franchise guy. At best, he’s a Ryan Fitzpatrick level QB. I just don’t see the physical tools needed to succeed in today’s NFL.
If Mayfield ends up the starter, this is a throw away season. If Trask starts its a potential building block for the future, not likely, but potentially.

Prisco’s opinion means very little because he’s a lousy CBS Sports insider. Take a look at some of his past “opinions” and predictions. Everyone on this site, including Joe, has their own opinion…especially me, lol. I’m telling you, don’t underestimate Baker Mayfield.

Trask does not seem like he was ever a great practice QB. If he blew away practices he would not have been a back-up to dual threat QBs in both high school and college.
He did shine brightly when given a shot as starter. He caused a couple of other QBs at Florida to transfer, because they knew they couldn’t compete.
I am almost sure we will see the same thing here, when he gets his shot.
Baker had his shot a few times and fell apart in all of them.

I’m no gator fan in fact I only pay attention to college football for the national championship and the draft. I think if we start Mayfield he’s going to be another Jameis 2.0 throwing 3 ints a game. Trask is going to surprise people and take good care of the ball and have a better connection with Evans and Godwin.

Neither one of these guys is likely to be the savior of the Bucs this year for various reasons. All of which most reasonable fans are aware of.

I am always cautiously optomistic this time of year. Learned over the years of losing seasons. I think we can win games with either QB. The division…maybe not. I do not think this team collectively has that fire in their belly. I don’t think Bowles can put it there. It is up to the leaders on this team to get it rolling. So far I just don’t see it.
