Fun With The Official Preseason Depth Chart

August 8th, 2023

Third-string.

The glorious first preseason game is Friday against Pittsburgh, which means the first official team depth chart has been issued.

Seasoned fans know the depth chart is meaningless, though there’s always a hidden kernel or two of truth to fish out.

First, the Bucs went out of their way to not declare a QB1. It’s listed as “Baker Mayfield or Kyle Trask” as the starting quarterback.

Other things from which to read between the lines:

*Free agent running back Chase Edmonds is listed as the No. 2 running back, with veteran Ke’Shawn “Sneak” Vaughn at No. 3.

*The second tier of receivers is listed as follows: Rookie Trey Palmer is Mike Evans’ backup. Free agent veteran David Moore is Chris Godwin’s backup, and Deven Thompkins is listed as the guy behind Russell Gage. (For the record, the Joe typing here thinks Thompkins is overhyped and overrated and may not be a legitimate NFL receiver. This is a topic of major uproar at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.)

*Rookie Calijah Kancey, sidelined with a calf strain, is listed as a starter alongside Vita Vea.

*No nickel cornerback is designated.

This guy Todd won’t be head coach next year buckle up Bucs fans it’s gonna get ugly.

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

Surprising that Edmonds is 2nd street. I honestly thought he would be injured by now and cut. Especially on such a low end deal.

  3. Uhhmm Says:

    Deven Thompkins = camp meat.

    Training camp warrior.

  4. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I agree with the Joe who typed this article on Thompkins.

So, what exactly did this guy show last year in preseason and regular season games as a WR and returner? I hope he isn’t the second coming of Kenny Bell. They should give him ALOT of playing time in the preseason as he will have decent QBs throwing to him, even Wolford.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t think there is enough of a sample to make a determination on Thompkins yet……..I think he has great potential.

There will probably be 7 receivers (including KR/PR)

I think the 7th will be Jarrett

  6. 02,20,2022 Says:

I bet this is the same Joe that…wanted Johnny Manzel and holds on to every word of Bill Polian(Lamar Jackson is a wr). yeah we know you. I was saying last summer that DT should have been rostered over BOTH Darden and Miller last season. Real fans know ball you guys know writing/journalism although your takes sometimes make things interesting. Everyone has their opinio tho so…..carry on.
    GO BUCS!!!

  7. PopsMalone Says:

Look at it on the bright side, at least we don’t have to be force fed Jaleon Darden this year, he who was afraid to be hit but the team would not cut until they absolutely had to because he was a draft pick….bum. (The 2nd coming of Dexter Jackson). I like Licht but that was twice they drafted receivers who were afraid to be hit. Enough.

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

Thompkins is an explosive athlete but his biggest issue is that he is only 155 lbs. the question remains can he handle contact from DB’s on the nfl level? Tyreek Hill is also 5’8” like Thompkins but he is 30lbs heavier at 185. Time will tell.

  9. Dwayne Cone Says:

As I see it Joe is just as entitled to his opinion as the next guy. Might get more push back but that is the downside of being on top. Snipers not going to smoke a cook when there is a big fat General available.

Looking at the second tier I think whoever is leading that offense should be able to have success on the 3-4 drives. Although it was against small college competition, while watching highlights of Edmonds at Fordham I could not help but remember the way Barry Sanders made the Dallas Cowboys look silly on that amazing run. Spinning defenders around and bouncing off tackles like a Pinball. Barry was not used as a receiver but this guy has some real skills coming out of the backfield and not just as a last resort.

  10. Marine Buc Says:

    @ TBBF

    I agree.

Too early to tell with Thompkins.

I believe they will carry 7 WRs – like they did last year.

I am rooting for Jarrett to make the roster as our WR7…

  11. Marine Buc Says:

Sneak Vaughn better have a few solid preseason games or he might be on the practice squad soon…

  12. Larrd Says:

I bet the third running back gets lots of carries this year.

  13. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Too early to tell with Thompkins? He was in almost every game last year mainly returned but WR at times. He didn’t show squat.

  14. 813bucboi Says:

what position is mauch playing?..i hope G…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Fred McNeil Says:

    Brady probably didn’t like Thompkins.

As I've posted before…. Thompkins was officially 167 lbs at his pro day last year. He also wasn't 5'8, he was 5'6 7/8".

  17. SlyPirate Says:

Sean Tucker is way down the list. Hopefully he gets a chance to show that 4.3 speed

  18. A Bucs Fan Says:

@ Brandon I couldn’t find his official pro day measurements for height and saw the 167. However Bucs website lists him at 155 which is unusual since team rosters usually list them heavier than what they are.

  19. garro Says:

“Deven Thompkins is listed as the guy behind Russell Gage.”
Lack of size not inches but in Lbs is the only thing Joe. Against man they will burst our bubble and his. (see Scotty Miller) His spot is on ST and Canales ability to get him the ball in other ways. Which I hope he will. The guy is dangerous.

“*No nickel cornerback is designated.” They hopefully have the guy and just are not saying yet. That Guy needs all the reps in Bowles complicated defense he can get. As in starting right now. Isaac sounds like a good blend of size speed and a hitter.

“*Free agent running back Chase Edmonds” This one surprises me a bit Vaughn not getting the playbook or still putting the ball on the ground? Would love to see a heavy dose of Tucker against the Steelers…Just cuz I love the idea of a steal in the draft.

“*Rookie Calijah Kancey” Gaines will be fine in his spot and my man Gholston will be his usual solid self. I don’t think we will see Kancey for a while yet. That is a shame but missing a good part of camp is a huge deal for him.

  20. garro Says:

Chris Murray BSPN has him 2nd behind Jensen.
    Is this correct?

    Go Bucs!

  21. garro Says:

They also have O’Connor as being #2 behind Kancey

Would someone here in Tampa post the official one from the Bucs for crying out loud.

    Go Bucs!
