Mike Evans Describes Exciting Chris Godwin Improvement

August 5th, 2023

Chris Godwin has had special seasons in his six NFL years, but none greater than his breakout 2019 campaign with America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, after Bucco Bruce Arians changed his receiver role.

That’s when Arians arrived and largely had Godwin playing slot receiver. Not only was he blocking in the trenches, he was busting out for all kinds of yards after the catch and finding seams all over the field.

In just 14 games that year, Godwin racked up 1,333 yards on 86 catches with 9 touchdowns and his first trip to the Pro Bowl.

Last year was a different Godwin as he battled back from offseason knee (ACL) surgery. He caught 104 balls but the explosiveness was lacking.

Mike Evans (the greatest receiver in Bucs history) was a guest on NFL Network today and was asked about Godwin. Evans could have gone in many directions, but he jumped in the time machine back to Godwin’s breakout year.

That’s what Evans sees now in training camp.

“I mean, he looks like he did in 2019, his All-Pro year,” Evans said of Godwin. “I mean he’s moving fast and we got him all over the field not just in slot. So I’m looking forward to Chris having a huge year this year.

Joe will fantasize for a moment that 27-year-old Godwin is 100 percent healthy and looking as good as Evans says he is. That means there’s not one damn reason why Godwin can’t have a huge season alongside Evans, who always has at least a “good” year.

That’s a very exciting thought when you combine it with the Bucs playing good defense. And the defense is key.

The Bucs got 2,000-plus yards and 12 touchdowns combined from Evans and Vincent Jackson back in 2014. But they were the worst team in the league because they couldn’t run the ball and the defense was historically bad through the first six weeks of the season.

Joe believes the Bucs need at least 2,500 yards and 17 touchdowns combined from Godwin and Evans to win the NFC South this season. And yes, unlike the naysayers across the national media, Joe believes that’s in play.

If Gage can stay healthy, and Otton takes another step, this offense could do some damage! Go Bucs!

  2. Da Bucs Guy Says:

There is one big reason, and that is one of the two backups that will be throwing the football.

  3. #99 the big fella Says:

Da bucs guy , shut your pie hole.. you are a troll . The saints need your support go away loser

  4. Duane Says:

JBF can’t help himself… likes to make Bucs fans vomit with phrases like “America’s quarterback Jameis Winston”. Just can’t get over his Nole delusions. I still remember crazed Nole fans, flooding the zone with troll storms on Bucs fan sites, anointing Winston as “Touchdown Jesus” … back in 2015.

Could not agree more.. glad to see (hear) ira got his love today from Ronde in his Hof speech . Much deserved

I’m a die hard 1 n 2 Mike Evans n Chris Godwin fan, respectively. However, I’ve been high on Deven Thompson since last year. He is amazing n I believe he has a chip on his shoulder to prove the pundits wrong. He wants to prove his worth in the league n I have no doubt that he’s on pace to do just that. He’s fiesty, fearless, energetic, and has proven that dynamite comes in small packages. This guy is a player to be reckoned with.

  7. Buddha Says:

Good to hear you optimistic Joe.

  8. Obvious Says:

Hey Dude, why Don’t You get it over with and go ahead and change your name to “DA BUCS TROLL”

It’s SO MUCH MORE appropriate for the guy that you are.

I’m being civil here considering how many titles most are already thinking up for you.

BE A PROUD LOSER AT LEAST! Go ahead. BTW, don’t forget your makeup to cover your pimples, pick out a pretty dress, Slather the 💄 lipstick on, and go ask your mother for permission. You got this so Go For It honey!

GO GET A LIFE “DA BUCS TROLL”

  9. Obvious Says:

And btw, I TRULY BELIEVE that Chris Godwin will end up right beside Mike in Canton.
    He’s made for it..

    GO BUCS!

  10. Jack Clark Says:

“ He caught 104 balls but the explosiveness was lacking.”

But he caught over 100 passes though 😭😭 how much do you expect from a man?

“ That means there’s not one damn reason why Godwin can’t have a huge season alongside Evans, who always has at least a ‘good’ year.”

Baker Mayfield’s sorry as is a damn good reason why Godwin doesn’t have a good year

I have no doubt the Bucs offense will vastly improve, especially how bad it was last season. My only concern is that the QB’s seem to have trouble connecting on the deep passes. Can’t keep defenses honest if the Bucs can’t push it down the field.

  12. garro Says:

2500 yards may be a stretch Joe. But if they get close to that number and all of the other moving parts of the offense come through we are gonna be a force to be reckoned with for sure. O line is still my biggest concern however.

    Go Bucs!

  13. RagingBrisket Says:

Best player and athlete on this team. Not even close

  14. August 1976 Buc Says:

What is the Over under on how many games Chris will miss again this season?

Great Talent, good teammate, but as sure as the Sun is coming up tomorrow, Chris will miss games this season. 4 years straight he has, ever since BA moved him to the Slot 2019 season, (the Larry Fitzgerald role) His career began to blossom, but with the increase in opportunity to make plays, so henceforth injuries.
So enjoy whatever Chris is able to contribute, but sooner or later his body will betray him again this season.
I hope for the best, but this is not Golf, its the NFL, Chris’s body just has not been able to last, so appreciate what he can contribute.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Infomeplease Says:

Joe, I sure hope your stated numbers come to pass. If the Bucs oline is revived and the rushing improves dramatically, they may very well happen! If not, maybe a repeat of last season.

  16. unbelievable Says:

I would say ~2200 yards and 15 touchdowns is probably more realistic from the 2 of them, but hey why not dream big!

  17. Esteban85 Says:

Godwin very well May turn out to be a better WR than Evans. Regardless, we are so lucky to have drafted these two studs. Not only are they 2 of the best Buccaneers but they are also really good dudes. The fact that they are not diva types like we’ve encountered in the past makes them that much more valuable to our franchise.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

Well, lets see… you have 17 games now, but also a very boring head coach and a bad situation at QB.

I normally go through and try to figure out all the stats before the season, but I haven’t done so yet since I haven’t seen the offense or know who the QB is, but I’d think 4000 passing yards is pushing it, yet I don’t know how in 17 games, in 2023, with passing (not running) QBs that you can’t get to that number.

So if Evans gets 1100 yards, Godwin gets 1100 yards, Otton gets 500 yards, White gets 600 yards, Gage gets 600 yards, you’re already at 3900 yards. Humm. That seems too aggressive, but at the same time, not outrageous in the least if everyone is healthy.
