“What Was I Doing Last Year?”
August 4th, 2023The good players nearly always take a giant step in their overall play in their second NFL season.
It’s a natural for a player who is dedicated mentally and physically, barring injury. There’s just so much to learn about the NFL game that it takes time to master.
Buccaneers tight end Cade Otton is a great example. He comes from a line of coaches and players, and he played four years of college football.
Otton looked back on his 2022 rookie season yesterday and had to laugh — despite catching 42 balls and 2 touchdowns.
“It’s funny, kind of, looking at my film from last year. You grow and you watch more film of what you should be doing and you’re just like, ‘What was I doing last year?'” Otton said. “So there’s always a natural progression, but I’m always trying to lock in on those details.”
He went on to say that staying locked in on the details can be easier within a new scheme, like the Bucs have this season.
“It’s easy to challenge yourself when you’re learning a new offense with those little fundamentals,” Otton said.
So how good is Otton? It’s unclear. Tampa Bay made him the first pick of Round 4 last year. He had a good rookie year, but Joe doesn’t know if there’s enough raw talent there to make Otton special.
However, the Year 2 leap makes Otton an X factor. Maybe he’ll look faster and strong know that he knows what he’s doing.

Time to bring the Payne….Boiler up!

Don’t have to be the strongest or fastest to get open and be productive as a tight end. Shot out to Cameron Brate

“What Was I Doing Last Year?” I was wondering the same thing Cade….

Maybe the Bucs should bring in “Gronk” as a TE consultant?

We really need some of these young guys to step up and progress if we want to be competitive. He’ll have ample opportunity to step into that role.
I imagine the TE position will be more important under the new scheme.

Actually the leap usually comes in year 3, but I would be happy with a year 2 one.

Gronk isn’t a great tight end…he’s a great football player. He was tops because of his physical attributes and his attitude…he simply could not grasp being bad mentally.
But he would not make a good consultant.

If Jameis can make an UDFA in Cameron Brate a legitimate threat in the passing game and get a second contract, surely Kyle Trask can do the same for Otton, remember he played with Pitts

I thought Otton was Baby Grotton after that Saints TD, or was it the rams?

He’s never gonna be Travis Kelsey, but I’d settle for a better blocking version of Cameron Brate.

Purdue kid can block but runs a 5.4

He better get a move on because I think Wells can play.
