Rare Todd Bowles Coaching Footage
August 2nd, 2023Todd Bowles is a relatively stoic head coach at Bucs practices. Fans and media don’t leave open sessions talking about how Bowles is visibly coaching his butt off and being demonstrative with messages to players.
But appearances don’t tell the whole story. Bowles has hours and hours to coach players behind the scenes and in meetings.
Last night, Joe capatured a rare video look at Bowles doing some hands-on coaching. No surprise that it was with one of his prized defensive backs, Jamel Dean.
Check out the 50-second video below.
Bowles noted yesterday after practice that about half the Bucs players don’t know he was a player in the league. Some surely might wonder if they watched Bowles with Dean.

I’m going to have to look up Bowles stats. He is a year or two older than Jack. How good was he?

Looks like he got a ring with the Skins in 87.

If you remember in his press conference Dean said his relationship with Bowels and everything Bowels has taught him is the reason he wanted to stay in Tampa.

Those two seem like they have that father/uncle-son/nephew type relationship a lot of coaches & players share.
Still can’t believe how big Jamel Dean is as a corner, and I got to see him standing near the Keenan Isaac kid from Bama State who’s the same height but next to Dean he looks malnourished lol

I think Bowles really understands defenses.
That job he did in the Super Bowl was amazing.
He learned from that regular season game loss. He kept everything that KC wanted to do in front of the defense. Did not let big plays happen down field. Some of the best tackling of the season.
It was so good, that after the Super Bowl into the next season, teams game planned Bowles defense against KC. And it worked for 4 or 5 games.
Then the even better, Andy Reid, adjusted the KC offense and figured out how to beat that Bowles concept.
The game theory that goes on with the best of the best is partially what makes the NFL so good.
BTW, this is not my endorsement that Bowles is an excellent head coach.

Bowles was a very good NFL safety. I watched him win a job as an undrafted rookie free agent and pair with another in SS Alvin Walton and win a Super Bowl with the Redskins in then87 season. He started several more years and was a solid all around player.

This is exactly what Bowles did. In the regular season game, the Bucs played three down linemen and two edge players on most downs in first part of game. They employed cover 1 and 0 a large percentage of the time. Davis got abused by Hill. In the Super Bowl, the Bucs employed four down linemen with two DEs on almost all plays. They also played out of a cover 2 shell as well. They essentially dared the Chiefs to run us out of that 4-2 Nickle look and Reid/Mahomes never adjusted. Brilliant move on Bowles part, very poor job of adjusting by Reid. He was outcoached 100%.

Maybe the enthusiasm of Canales is contagious. I sure hope so, the whole team looked listless last season.
A good sign for the future.

Bowles is a very good DC and an elite secondary coach
Yet, much like big business, people get over promoted just as often as overlooked
Todd better prove something this year or he will never get another shot as a HC

Won a Super Bowl with the Redskins.Doug Williams was the QB.

Press man breakdown? Hope Dean takes the Coaches coaching. Looks like he was trying to show him how to force the receiver to go to the sideline gaining inside leverage and use the boundary as a twelfth man. Like opponents did with Miller last year.
Cool stuff!
Go Bucs!

Why do Buc fans love Father Dungy and his defense-led Wild Card teams but hate Bowles for doing the same thing? No one calls Bowles “Bucball” and he doesn’t run the “Tampa 2” … I think its all just the heavy expectations of a team with a very old, past his prime, distracted QB that had no more magic left in his hat.

Craig ..that’s how I was describing them last year too..they looked listless.

What does that say about the team and the HC if they dont even know he played… and to say that this is a rare moment captured of him actually doing some hands on coaching.
I’m sorry but call me whatever, this guy is not meant to be a HC. this will all be better once this charade is over.

“What does that say about the team and the HC if they dont even know he played”
Well being that our oldest player LVD is 33 yo, and Todd Bowles’ last season as a player was in 1993. Means >90% of the people on our 2023 roster didn’t even exist when Todd Bowles hung it up as a player. Which mean Bowles’ coaching career is as old if not older than the majority of the players he’s coaching right now lol
What’s he supposed to say? “I was in the super bowl game where I’m going to disney world was said for the first time” that’s corny af, and tbh Bowles doesnt give off egomaniac vibes. You’re reaching

No doubt Bowles is a good coach maybe even a great defensive coordinator. He’s shown in the past that he’s not that great at managing the team as a head coach.
I’m hoping he lets Canales run the offense and stays out of the time management 2 minute aspect of the offensive side of the ball. Not sure how it will all pan out but Canales seems like a thinker a planner & delves into analytics more than Bowles.
Will Bowles make adjustments this year and be more aggressive and more team minded rather than being safe and securing his defense with rest and relying more in his side of the ball? I sure hope this Canales cat is the perfect match for the best defensive coordinator in the game right now.

Bowles has got to win this year to stick around. But with the QB’s in his stable, I’m not sure he can pull off a 500 or better season. We shall see.

Looks like he’s coaching him up on his footwork when playing press… more leverage / a more sturdy base when your feet are staggered, versus being squared with your feet flat.

coaches coach.. isnt that the point? non story
