Bucs Training Camp 2023 Day 5 Practice Notes
July 31st, 2023Kyle Trask had his best practice of his NFL career, another drafted rookie joins the pick club and Mike Alstott still draws a crowd. All this and more in today’s practice notes.
* About a half-hour before practice for what the Bucs have deemed “Military Day” with veterans and current members of the Armed Forces, including a quite a few who are stationed at MacDill Air Force Base, a Coast Guard chopper hovered over the middle of one of the Bucs’ practice fields. A member of the Coast Guard climbed out of the chopper and was let down to the field by a cable.
* With the Bucs in full pads (finally) the Bucs had wide receiver/defensive back one-on-one drills. One of the highlights was Mike Evans vs. Jamel Dean. In the first battle, Evans may have pushed off to gain inside leverage. The second time the two went at each other, Joe thought sure Evans pushed off as he dang near grabbed Dean and shoved him aside to get a big cushion.
* Also in one-on-ones, Deven Thompkins may have made the catch of the day. He smoked Don Gardner, then adjusted to the thrown ball to stretch out and haul in an over-the-shoulder pass for a touchdown.
* Dean also went up against Kade Warner and made a sweet play. Warner, heading toward the left sideline, had a catch and Dean reached in and swatted the ball out of Warner’s hands.
* Ryan Miller lost Derrick Pitts down the sideline but Pitts didn’t give up. He recovered either to knock the ball out of Miller’s hands or distract Miller just enough that Miller dropped the ball.
* Rookie speedster Trey Palmer has not been having a good camp. For every good play he makes — and he has made some — he makes two or three bad plays. Not a good ratio. But in these one-on-one drills, Palmer flipped the script. He was not on the same page as the quarterback on his first try, but his second attempt, battling Pitts, Palmer came back for the ball and caught a Trask pass.
Red Zone
* Baker Mayfield is flushed left and tries to hit Chris Godwin along the left sideline. The ball was sort of up for grabs between Godwin and Antoine Winfield. The Pro Bowl safety jumped with Godwin and knocked it away.
* Mayfield tries to connect with Cade Otton in the right flat and Otton dropped the ball.
* Mayfield did the spread-option handoff where a quarterback takes a couple of steps as he holds the ball in a running back’s gut. Then he releases and Sneak Vaughn gets a solid gain to the left.
* Warner gets wide-ass open deep over the middle and Mayfield hits him for a monster gain.
* Overall, Joe thought the Bucs run defense was stout today. Chase Edmonds tries to run left and there’s no room at the inn.
* As Joe state, Trask probably had his best practice since he was drafted. But he did regress with one pass. The thing that has changed about Trask in Joe’s eyes is that he is no longer throwing lollipop passes. Instead he is rifling the ball. But on this play Trask reverted a little to lobbing a pass. He did this aiming for Evans but regardless, it worked. The pass, despite being soft, was dead-on as Trask lofted the ball in the middle of three defenders where Evans hauled it in.
* Schiano Man corners/safety Christian Izien (Rutgers) races in on a blitz and forces Trask to dirt the ball.
* Godwin catches a pass from Mayfield along the right sideline, cuts in and has a big gain.
* Rachaad White runs left and there is a mound of humanity to stop him.
* Vaughn has a rare big run on the Bucs defense to the right for a touchdown. Despite the Bucs being in full pads, it appears the defense isn’t allowed to tackle.
* Trask tucks and runs for the left pylon though the play would have been likely blown dead in a game. Grant Hemanns at right tackle jumped.
* Taye Barber gets a few yards on a Benn’ed Around.
* Mayfield throws left and a mysterious defender jumps the route and nearly has a pick. Who was this mystery man? Why it was none other than graybeard Lavonte David. He was upset he didn’t have a pick-six.
* Mayfield dirts the ball due to pressure from Markees Watts (Charlotte),
Seven-on-seven
* Mayfield throws two passes back-to-back to the left side medium to tight ends David Wells and Payne Durham.
* Trask throws over the middle to Godwin and the veteran turns what was a decent gain into a large one with a good catch-and-run.
* Trask connects with Russell Gage over the middle and rookie linebacker SirVocea Dennis nearly broke up the pass.
* Veteran receiver David Moore pulls in a pass from Trask over the middle.
* Mayfield tries for Warner on a slant to the right and the ball is off Warner’s hands.
* Kaylon Geiger joins the fun with a catch from Mayfield to the right side.
* Gage catches a Mayfield pass on the left side.
* Turner catches a pass from Mayfield on the right side after Mayfield rolled right. Had quarterbacks been allowed to be hit, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka would have splashed Mayfield from behind.
11-on-11
* Geiger runs to the left and he has his left hand on the backside of Ko Kieft who snowplows his way through traffic to allow Geiger a nice gain.
* Mayfield to Otton over the middle.
* PICK! YaYa’s Flame Broiled Chicken Diaby has his first pick in training camp. Mayfield tried to do his version of Moneyball by hitting into a shift. Mayfield seemed to try to force the ball through a crowd. Joe couldn’t tell who got his paw on the ball but the ball bounced in the air and YaYa dove and laid out and caught the ball just before it hit the turf. Excellent hustle by the rookie!
* After the play, Joe saw Mayfield and a coach (it wasn’t Todd Bowles and it wasn’t offensive coordinator Dave Canales) talk one-on-one for several minutes.
* Good teammate: Despite being picked, Mayfield ran up to help Diaby off the turf and Diaby told Joe after practice Mayfield congratulated him on the play.
* Edmonds catches a pass from Mayfield in the left flat and turns it into a productive run.
* Gage catches a pass from Trask along the right sideline.
* Ronnie Brown gets a big gain as he barrels through the right side.
* Bucs legend Mike Alstott stood in the heat near the bleachers and signed autographs for a good 20 minutes. Joe saw and heard a little boy wearing a Packers Aaron Jones jersey but carrying a Bucs flag tell his mom he got Alstott to sign his flag but “I don’t know who that is.”
* Mayfield drops back and Keenan Isaac flies in right away and was peeved. Isaac would have splashed Mayfield if this was a game. You could hear him screaming in frustration that he couldn’t touch Mayfield as he had the Heisman Trophy winner a dead man walking.
* Trask is flushed to the right and connects with Moore along the right sideline.
* Whoa, this may have been the best throw Joe has seen from Trask. He connects with Dominique Dafney (Indiana State) and somehow Trask got this pass through three defenders. Impressive accuracy.
* Unlike the previous two camps for Trask, he not only seems to be improving but he’s been pretty consistent. In the past, he might have an OK practice and follow itt up the next day with a truly brutal performance. Joe swears someone kidnapped Trask and the guy wearing his jersey is an imposter. This cannot be the same guy.
Two-minute drill
* So Mayfield has a fastball, too? Mayfield let loose with a screaming pass to Godwin along the left sideline.
* PICK! Mayfield throws a ball over the middle near the goal line and Winfield snags the ball.
* A Trask pass to Durham sets up a Palmer touchdown from Trask on a short pass.
* Mayfield tries for Ryan Miller on the left side and the ball hits Ryan Neal squarely in the chest, Neal, however, couldn’t hang on.
* Mayfield connects with Warner on the left sideline with a perfectly placed ball. Neal had good coverage on Warner but Mayfield threw it where only Warner had a chance, away and low. Warner gets low and comes up with the reception.
* Exact same play for Palmer only this time the ball is off Palmer’s hands.
* Rakim Jarrett gets open over the middle and Trask hits him in the numbers.

“Kyle Trask had his best practice of his NFL career.”
This is becoming a cliche. Maybe it’s time for many to admit being wrong?
July 31st, 2023 at 1:11 pm
Chase Daniel could come out here and look fantastic in these practices where you don’t have to hit the quarterback…..once the lights come on in real life action, Baker will easily start to separate
July 31st, 2023 at 1:14 pm
^ Tbbucs3 pithed off that his anti-Trask world is falling apart lol.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:14 pm
Thank you Joe! Looks like Trask is really gaining momentum and clearly out played baker today. Could you tell who took the majority of the first team snaps?
July 31st, 2023 at 1:18 pm
saw the helicopter pic 1st thought the trauma hawk landing to bring someone to safety
July 31st, 2023 at 1:20 pm
@Tbbucs is not a Buc fan. You’re a hater who plays favorites and is bitter about Byron Leftwich being fired for not being able to stand on his own and call plays successfully. I bet you’re rooting for a Bucs offensive failure just to be “right” about Byron. We’ll I’d tell you to go root for his team but he’s still looking for a job.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:23 pm
It’s more of an anti Trask fan boy club world, Jenkins.
None of these practices will matter that much in the QB competition so I encourage the Trask fans to hold on their scorecards….the main thing that’s going to matter are the pre season games to see how these QBs will handle the pressure with bullets flying…..3 weeks from now it’ll be Bakers job.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:24 pm
Wow, this Trask improvement seems to be sticking.
As a big FSU guy and Gator Hater, that all goes away when they come to play for our bucs.
Go Kyle!
July 31st, 2023 at 1:24 pm
With Mayfield there will be many ‘intended for’ passes. Let Trask play.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:28 pm
Trey Palmer’s brick hands seemed to have followed him from college to the NFL. It doesn’t matter how fast you are, if you can’t catch the ball he won’t be on this team. I think Palmer was a 6th round pick so if he gets cut the optics wouldn’t be so bad.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:29 pm
Trask is trending. Trask wants the starting gig and he will have it.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:29 pm
Jenkins … Nothing would make me happier than Trask emerging. I’m also happy the Trask fans finally have something to cheer about.
The reality is he hasn’t done a thing. We are talking about practice. QBs can’t get touched. It sounds like no one could get touched. To paraphrase Iron Mike, “Everyone has a plan until they get hit.”
I’m glad Trask is showing up, but let’s see Trask perform in a game.
Fingers crossed, though.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:30 pm
One of my biggest concerns with Mayfield is the number of blocked passes he has had in past seasons (especially at Carolina).
I am a bit disappointed to see this is still an issue with him here in Tampa.
It appears Trask won today’s QB battle. I can’t wait to see him get a full half with the first team offense this preseason…
July 31st, 2023 at 1:31 pm
Spot on SkyPirate, finally someone who doesn’t have their pom poms out about Trask playing well in *practice*
July 31st, 2023 at 1:32 pm
Joe,
Your comments make us feel we are sitting next to you. Thanks for such great detail.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:32 pm
Another fine effort Joe! Keep it coming. Just curious Joe, do you really think Trask could beat out Mayfield for this job prior to the season starting? I don’t think so but wondering what you are thinking. Hoping for Trask to keep improving for the sake of all of us in Buccaneer world!
July 31st, 2023 at 1:33 pm
I hope this is a real, legit competition for the coaches because I want to see Trask start! We know what Baker is capable of (average play with a few splash plays and turnover worthy throws), but if it wasn’t for his “charisma”, I think Trask might be leading this thing by a landslide. Defenses probably love Baker. I want both to succeed of course, but if this continues, Baker better begin as the backup before it’s too late and the season’s too far gone.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:33 pm
Told ya Joe. Trask can ball when given the chance to consistently work with the starters. Can’t wait to see him in game! In other news, Half Baked seems to be in mid-season form.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:34 pm
Can you write an apology letter post to Trask? You guys bashed him for two years and posted an unflattering picture. If he comes in and lights it up this year, you Joe’s will be the first to be singing his praises… it’s already started
July 31st, 2023 at 1:34 pm
Great stuff, Joe – thanks!
July 31st, 2023 at 1:35 pm
Plus if Trask does struggle as the starter, and Baker comes in, that chip on his small shoulders will be even bigger, leading to a better performance, in theory?
July 31st, 2023 at 1:38 pm
Thanks Joe.
Looks like Baker is already going backwards into his old self.Coming up with 2 interceptions on the first day of real practice is not a good thing.
Joe, did you mistake a touch pass as a lollipop pass? Hard and fast balls are great sometime, but there are times that a little touch is better.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:41 pm
“Can you write an apology letter post to Trask?”
For what????
July 31st, 2023 at 1:42 pm
Go Kyle beat Faker!
And I don’t mean Kobe…
July 31st, 2023 at 1:42 pm
Huh. Trask practice consistently after playing with the 1s & 2s for the first time his career. And have the least turnover so far as well? Hmmmm. Hope the best qb get the job no matter who it is.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:43 pm
“* Mayfield did the spread-option handoff where a quarterback takes a couple of steps as he holds the ball in a running back’s gut. Then he releases and Sneak Vaughn gets a solid gain to the left.”
RPO “ride n decide”, nice.
“The pass, despite being soft, was dead-on as Trask lofted the ball in the middle of three defenders where Evans hauled it in.”
Touch & Accuracy were touted as strengths in his scouting report, good job. I wonder how much work he’s put into his footwork these past few years and for all the “what did he learn from Brady” nobody is asking what he learned from Blaine Gabbert, cause it sounds like Trask/Uncle Kyle has been slinging it lol
* Geiger runs to the left and he has his left hand on the backside of Ko Kieft who snowplows his way through traffic to allow Geiger a nice gain.
Jet Sweep Joe? Was Geiger in motion pre snap?
“Mayfield drops back and Keenan Isaac flies in right away and was peeved.”
I’ve heard nothing but good things about this kid Keenan Isaac, can’t wait to see him play.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:44 pm
Little boy in the Packers jersey should have been escorted off the premises.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:46 pm
Tbbucs3 HAHAHAHA No.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:50 pm
Joe, when a receiver is “in the middle of three defenders” a hard level throw can get picked – the only way to the receiver is a soft accurate pass over the top. Good quarterbacks can make both hard a soft passes.

“Lets see it in the game”
That’s fair.
You have to wait 2 weeks though.
July 31st, 2023 at 1:54 pm
Who is the Russell Gage guy you speak of? Did he make it through practice without getting hurt?

JAMES WILDER !

Lately Mayfield seems to be making more miscues than Trask. I noticed it last practice, and now this practice. These notes show 2 picks and a 1 near-pick for Mayfield; 0 for Trask. Is Trask’s performance rattling Mayfield?
July 31st, 2023 at 2:12 pm
Let us know, Joe, when there’s an Albert and Alberta sighting at practice.
July 31st, 2023 at 2:17 pm
@Jenkins
You ever hear that Denny Green quote from back in the day when he was the HC of the miserable AZ Cardinals? Some of us are reading these reports on Mayfield and thinking exactly what Green was thinking then, but not as hyped up or pissed off about it. Baker Mayfield through a handful of TC practices, sounds like he’s being Baker Mayfield.
July 31st, 2023 at 2:21 pm
Any updates on Calijah Kancey’s injury or the results of the MRI?
July 31st, 2023 at 2:21 pm
Trask took the majority of the work with the 1’s yesterday so today should have been Baker’s turn.
If that is so and Trask had his best practice then he had to make some of the young guys. Look good. That’s can only be good for them.
Come the first Preseason game Baker might hope that Trask gets the start because Pittsburgh is certainly going to be looking for some payback for that Playoff Game.
July 31st, 2023 at 2:32 pm
Here’s the thing. If Trask and Mayfield are even, the tie should go to Trask, since he’s got the room to grow and develop given more on-field experience. I think, based on the practices so far, that seems to be the case. Certainly, much will be determined by actual pre-season game results, but if Trask can keep it competitive, he’s got a chance to win the job.
July 31st, 2023 at 2:41 pm
Wish I was able to see some of this for myself. Lot of practice football left before game football. Let’s see what happens. Sounds like they are all working hard. We’ll see if Bowles and Licht have, or will, put the right guys together.
July 31st, 2023 at 2:46 pm
Bucs legend Mike Alstott stood in the heat near the bleachers and signed autographs for a good 20 minutes. Joe saw and heard a little boy wearing a Packers Aaron Jones jersey but carrying a Bucs flag tell his mom he got Alstott to sign his flag but “I don’t know who that is.”

You mean all those picks and bad throws and lollipop passes Joe witnessed the past 2.5 years never happened?
July 31st, 2023 at 2:51 pm
Awesome recap as always, Joe. These are fantastic.
Great news on Trask. I hope he can keep it up. Can’t wait to see him in action and see how he’s throwing it, if he can, under pressure, not revert back to his college cupcake passes.
July 31st, 2023 at 2:52 pm
Trask had the majority of snaps. Not sure they were all with first team.
July 31st, 2023 at 2:53 pm
SlyPirate Says: “The reality is Trask hasn’t done a thing.”
Tell that to Mayfield, who is so rattled he’s been throwing picks and blocked passes galore these last two practices. 😛
July 31st, 2023 at 2:54 pm
Thanks, Joe!
July 31st, 2023 at 2:58 pm
Rod,
You’re a broken record with your “college cupcake passes”. Give it up. Stop being such a bitter FSU fan boi (who has admitted “I hate all Gators”) and accept that your broken record runs into the reality that Trask could not have set all those passing records in college football’s fastest conference – the SEC – by throwing “cupcake passes”. You need a new mantra to chant every other post.
July 31st, 2023 at 3:04 pm
Thanks, Joe for the great details! I’m especially interested in TD/INT ratios for the QBs. Also, two-minute and red zone performance by the QBs.
Thanks also for the info on ‘sacks’, I hope we can pressure the QB better this year so info on pressures and sacks with be great too! thanks!
Is Tucker getting many opportunities? Not hearing his name called…
July 31st, 2023 at 3:04 pm
As Joe has typed the following many, many, many times: For Trask to start, Joe firmly believes he has to play so well the Bucs cannot afford to pull him off the field. Why? Because Todd Bowles needs wins and he knows it. He’s not going to put his career in the hands of a guy with nine total passes and one appearance — unless Trask practices so well they can’t pull him off the field.
Is the gap narrowing? Sure is. After today, Joe isn’t positive Mayfield is the better quarterback.
Is Trask practicing head and shoulders better than Mayfield? No. Not yet.
July 31st, 2023 at 3:08 pm
Impressive play-by-play Joe (and I’m sure it’s not easy deciphering all those sweaty notes afterwards). Loved the way you started off with the Mike Evans – Jamel Dean matchup.
Leads to a question though. Are the zebras at these practices? Mike’s gotten called for pushing off quite a bit over the years.
July 31st, 2023 at 3:08 pm
It’s not who he is working with. It’s Trask himself. He is a different quarterback now. Dave Canales basically admitted this to Joe today.
Trask is throwing differently. His footwork is different. His decision-making is different. Has nothing to do with who he is throwing to.
Something flipped with the kid during the summer break. Did he have a come-to-Jesus moment this summer? Did Canales reprogram him? Joe isn’t sure but he looks nothing like the quarterback Joe has been watching the past 2.5 years.
July 31st, 2023 at 3:09 pm
“Is Trask practicing head and shoulders better than Mayfield? No.”
Not “head and shoulders better”, but based on Joe’s notes Trask is looking “better” right now. He’s pressuring Mayfield – something Mayfield likely didn’t think would happen – and as result Mayfield’s been throwing more picks and batted balls as a result. Mayfield being Mayfield.

If you are Todd Bowles, are you going to commit career suicide for an under-sized, over-hyped, bust, INT-and-batted-balls machine, career journeyman?

JOE: “Has nothing to do with who he is throwing to.”
That makes no sense. Who Brady was throwing to and playing with affected his play, but who Trask throws to and plays with has no affect on his play?

This I am impressed by. Impressed by the coaching staff, and by Trask’s willingness to change things.
Many coaches have spent many seasons trying to re-program many quarterbacks, to no avail. Old habits are hard to break. Kudos all around!

If you were Todd Bowles are you going to commit save your career with Baker freakin’ Mayfield??? It seems like the only people in the world who thinks he can play are on this blog.
July 31st, 2023 at 3:37 pm
Does Bowles need wins Joe? I think the Bucs brass this year in particular would rather find out if Trask is the real and needs to play. Maybe the Bucs really wanted Baker as a vet backup competition.
July 31st, 2023 at 3:38 pm
As a Bucs only fan… I couldn’t be happier. Mayfield was gifted the lead spot and if Trask was to win the job he would have to do so by proving beyond a reasonable doubt that he’s the man. If that happens, the Bucs are in good shape. Mayfield is a league average QB, we can win with him. If Trask beats him out, he’s better than average. I’m good with that. He’s under contract for next year as well. I hope he keeps proving himself. The odds are still against him.
July 31st, 2023 at 3:44 pm
I’m glad Trask is improving. Only concerning thing is for him not to get too comfortable throwing those contested pases between two and three defenders (Wich is good to see him trying). Remember this is practice, in a real game; one of three throws like that ,will be picked. Just saying.

It’s impossible to know anyone’s intentions, but Baker’s contract is much more “backup-like” than it is “expected starter.” I will root for both of them to succeed, but I’ve never thought that there was ever anything other than an actual competition happening here.
I usually don’t even bother to watch preseason games, but I’m itching for it this year!
GO BUCS!!
July 31st, 2023 at 3:47 pm
I do not agree that Bowles’ job is on the line. He just lost Brady! At quarterback, they have an undersized career journeyman who is average on his best day and a big young quarterback who is looking very good now that he is with the 1s for the 1st time. I say Bowles has at least 2 seasons left and will go with Trask. He has nothing to gain with Mayfield.
July 31st, 2023 at 3:49 pm
Hodad
Bingo!!!
Iamabuc,
He mentioned in his interview that he was “testing the waters” when he threw that interception to Dennis. So, perhaps he is trying to find his comfort zone in regards to squeezing the ball into tight spaces.

For all those who say that Trask’s performance in camp so far doesn’t mean anything because nobody is hitting him … what, so you think the 6 foot Mayfield can take hits better than 6 ft 5 in Trask?
It’s not that Mayfield plays badly, but c’mon, there’s a reason he played for three teams last season, and nobody but the Bucs wanted him this season for a bargain basement salary. Sure, he may outperform a lot of expectations, but why so determined to deny what your not-lying eyes can see, as reported by others including dedicated Trask-haters like JBF?

You have a valid point, but the counter is that many on here spent the last 3 years wishing that Brady would throw more 50/50 balls to Mike Evans, because that is when M1k3 shines!

I had to laugh. Just how much did you actually see him play in 2 1/2 years? You made it sound like a lot Joe, but we both know we haven’t truly seen him play. It really sounds like he is putting it all together now.
Thanks for the great notes. It’s the first thing I look for each day. 🙂

I think what we are seeing the Baker stans going through the 5 stages of denial.
Its early yet so they’re currently in the Anger stage.

On a different note, The Athletic took some time away from being SJW’s and wrote an outstanding article about Ronde Barber today.
‘Ronde Barber let nothing stop him on his path to the Hall of Fame’
If you have a way to access it, give it a read.

Only if you were a Packers fan. I hate them, and their dumb kids. In fact I went to a game around 2001 or so, vs the Packers, and some dumb kid who was like 13 probably was talking smack, and I asked him if he even knew what a ‘meat’ Packer was. He said yeah, it was someone who packs meat.
Morons.

I’m rooting for BOTH quarterbacks. I completely ignore what took place in Carolina last year. That team was racked with dissension, Baker had no off-season with them, and the coach proved he didn’t have a clue how to prepare quarterbacks. Baker had one outstanding season at Cleveland, then he was hurt, had surgery and the franchise made a decision to go all in on another quarterback.
Baker had enough talent to be chosen #1 in the draft. It is ludicris to assume that he has no talent. He had dozens of scouts watching him in the preparation for the draft. Put yourself in his shoes and you can realize how tough it might have been to be trashed by Cleveland.
Similarly, Trask never had anything close to an opportunity to develop his first two years. You can’t take away the tremendous last season he had at Florida, or the talent he showed. Take a look at the championship game against Alabama. His size, his arm strength and his leadership were on display that whole year. But as Baker found out, one year does not make a career. The guy has talent.
But talent alone doesn’t mean much. Jameis proved that. The NFL is not only physically demanding; it is mentally demanding. That is what is going to separate these two players. These first two practices indicate that both players are better than advertised. They both have enough talent to succeed in the NFL. The question will be, who is the best leader and who can shake off the inevitable mistakes and rally the team? Brady wasn’t the most talented quarterback. He was simply the most tough-minded.

I don’t care who’s under center. If it’s Kyle, great. If it’s Baker, cool. Just freaking win games. The D will probably need to carry this team more often than not. LFG BUCS!!

LFG! KT…
Keep applying pressure to Baker the Faker…
You can talk the talk all you want, but at some point you’ll have to walk the walk and Baker still hasn’t done that yet in his career…

Odds are that he either liked the colors or his parent got it for him. That experience with Mike may just encourage him to look up some game footage…or get mom to show him. Could be the beginning of a new fan.

I just want the better QB to start whether Trask or Mayfield wins. But it certainly seems Trask want it more. And there’s a difference between wanting Trask to succeed and not even giving him a chance. Like you. Find a different team to cheer for cause your not a real fan

“Chase Daniel could come out here and look fantastic in these practices where you don’t have to hit the quarterback…..once the lights come on in real life action, Baker will easily start to separate”
If that is the case…why isn’t Baker?
I don’t know if Trask will be great, but he will surely be as good or better than Baker ‘Failure’ Mayfield.
July 31st, 2023 at 5:30 pm
Bonzai,
It’s day 5 of training camp, Baker will improve….
Ilove how much stock internet commenters are putting into days 4 and 5 of training camp, none of this will matter after the pre season game, that’s the real competition.
I really don’t see why the Trask brigade if so against the idea of Baker starting, I’m not even saying Baker will be good but he undoubtedly deserves a chance to see if he can replicate his early career success…if he sucks in comes Trask.
July 31st, 2023 at 5:32 pm
I hope so…because I want him to start the first 5 games.
July 31st, 2023 at 5:49 pm
@tbbucs3
You haven’t even given Trask a chance. I been Mayfield supporter his entire career and feel he has the skill. But you say Chase Daniels can do great in practice like Trask, yet Mayfield isn’t. Yet defend Mayfield and hate in Trask. It’s obvious bias against Trask that’s the issue
July 31st, 2023 at 5:55 pm
At least this preseason will be entertaining.
July 31st, 2023 at 6:09 pm
Just imagine if they would have given Trask first team reps on Brady days off the past 2 years he would have been even better in this training camp. But the bucs gave one player all the power on the team and this is why you don’t make one player bigger than the team regardless of who the player is.
July 31st, 2023 at 6:26 pm
As long as he keeps this up Kyle will win the job and we will make the playoffs and we will finally have develop a quarterback
July 31st, 2023 at 6:33 pm
Lakeland Buc … ‘I do not agree that Bowles’ job is on the line. I say Bowles has at least 2 seasons left and will go with Trask. He has nothing to gain with Mayfield.’
I agree 100% with the first part of those 3 statements Lakeland (Bowles will get this season & next season as a minimum, UNLESS the team literally quits on him, and I can’t see that happening). But it’s still much too early in the ‘competition’ to determine whether Mayfield or Trask will get the starting nod for Game 1. I’m convinced that Bowles & Canales will go with the QB who they feel gives them the best chance to win Game 1.
Whoever ‘wins’ the competition will be on a very short leash in any event IMO. I’d guess that 3 losses in a row will about do it, as will getting too far behind a .500 W-L record (such that the season is a goner). And (heaven forbid) NEITHER QB can get the job done, and we really suck, I’m sure there’ll be a huge temptation to be looking for a primo pick in the draft … for a new QB of course. Of course, if we suck that bad, we may EARN the high draft pick while trying our best to win.
July 31st, 2023 at 6:36 pm
Agree DR about whoever wins will be on a short lease……since that’s the case why TF would you want Trask out there? If he has to get benched then his confidence will be shot and Mayfield will be disgruntled.
The new Bucs coaches will look REALLY bad if Trask is named the starter and doesn’t preform.

OneilBuc … Look at Brady’s career and he ONLY missed games in 2008 (missed all but 1 game due to injury) and then he missed 4 games in 2016 (due to injury once again). And injury to Tom Brady meant that he had zero choice but to sit because the injuries were that serious. Other than his rookie 2000 year (he sat), the first game of 2001 (when Bledsoe started), and 19 games lost in those 2 seasons (2008 & 2016), he played every game … 335 all together. Amazing.
But Tom Brady never forgot for a second how he got to start in 2001 (Bledsoe’s injury in Game 2 against the Jets). Patriots drafted a number of QBs during his time with them, but none of them stood a chance of replacing him. He never came off the field. Trask was never going to get snaps while Brady was here.

“Is Trask practicing head and shoulders better than Mayfield? No. Not yet.”
It sounds like a great competition. I’m with Buddha who is rooting for BOTH QB’s.
An observation about many posters and expectations. Mayfield did something in Cleveland that hadn’t been done literally decades. He’s the vet and so the expectations for him are HIGH. Trask has been a 3rd stringer who couldn’t beat out Blaine Gabbert..the expectations are low.
IE They could be in a dead heat but due to the prejudice against Mayfield along with the expectations, and the fanboys from UF rooting for Trask who has LOW expectations going in…in the minds of many fans Mayfield will have to be the CLEAR winner to satisfy them, A tie goes to Trask in many minds here whereas I tend to agree with Joe. If it’s a tie…and I hope it is..they being with Mayfield happy in the knowledge that Trask is ready if and when Mayfield goes down.
There will be some truly confused posters here if BOTH guys are “good” enough to win.

I hated that there were so many there, but I remember the Packers fans around my family were usually very friendly and decent. This was back in the 70s and 80s, though. Our behavioral standards have gone downhill side then.

You cannot judge which QB is better on a day by day basis. It seems a whole lot of people do not realize that the Bucs are alternating which QB plays with the starting unit every other day. Today, Trask got to play with the starters and Mayfield was with the 2dd-3rd teamers. Tomorrow, it will be the other way around, as it has been this far in the Bucs’ practice rotation.
I don’t think it is prudent for anybody to make any judgements until the Bucs have two playoff games under their belt. That said, as confident as I was that Mayfield would easily be the better QB, I’m starting to believe in Trask. More than anything, I like his height advantage over Mayfield. You can count the number of all-time NFL star QBs that were 5’10” or less than one hand.

Yeah, they pretend to be that way, with their fake Canadian nice guy act – but if you give them even half a second with your back turned, they’re going to clear you out, if they don’t put a knife in your spine. Can never be too careful around those people.

Good news! Maybe Trask is not a bust! Maybe all the Gator haters will be a bit quieter.
Seriously Good on you Kyle! Make it a real battle!
No tackling? I understand not wanting injuries, but this defense tackled like my little sister last season. I don’t recall seeing more than a few solid tackles on the back end all year mostly from Winfield. Tackling is fundamental football and needs to be practiced.

DR . I can agree with you about Brady but the one thing that helped Brady and what he always had was a good defense. I think we can win with a good defense and a average or slightly above average offense. That’s why I don’t want to tank for Caleb Williams or Drake May. I really hope Kyle Trask or even Baker Mayfield does well so we can try and build a power house defense like we once had .
