“Focused” Kyle Trask

July 30th, 2023

Competing quarterback Kyle Trask.

Joe loved hearing this heartfelt take from a Buccaneers defensive player.

Cornerback Carlton Davis held a news conference today and was asked about the quarterback competition. Perhaps you’ve heard about it; it’s free agent veteran Baker Mayfield versus inexperienced Kyle Trask. The winner replaces Tom Brady.

Davis noted how the QBs are battling and he had little to say about Mayfield. Instead, Davis had impresssive comments for Trask, Tampa Bay’s second-round draft pick in 2021.

“Kyle Trask is really competing. I’ve really seen that edge on him, especially today or the last two days,” Davis said. “He’s been real focused, you can tell how he’s been operating the offense and his decision-making.”

What a revival for Trask. He clearly won Day 4 of camp, which was this morning. Trask seemed to spend most of his time with the first unit.

Joe can’t say there is great quarterback play happening consistently on the fields of One Buc Palace, but it’s certainly a real competition that will take center stage when the pads come on tomorrow and Mayfield likely gets more of the first-team work.

    Go Kyle.

  2. ATLBuc Says:

Joe, as Trask continues to emerge as the better quarterback, I expect Mayfield to get less and less snaps like he did today.

  3. HC Grover Says:

All Mayfield has is a big mouth.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Love all the updates today Joe, great stuff.

Said for a while, I have little faith in Trask, but I’d absolutely rather see him out there over Mayfield since at least you have a lottery ticket-level chance that he could be something. Plus I just want to see him really get a chance, mainly to see his arm and what he can do when he’s throwing to Evans and Godwin. Also I’d love for the Bucs to have NOT wasted a 2nd round pick.

I hope he keeps it up and flat wins the job.

Not that I actually think that will happen. Instead I think we’re all going to be sentenced to watching an incredibly boring team go 5-12 or 6-11 with Mayfield starting 11 games, Trask starting 5 games, and Josh Johnson returning to Tampa, to finish his career where it started, wrapping up the season.

  5. Jack Clark Says:

Trask already has the physical traits and if his decision-making is on par with Brady’s then Baker Mayfield’s sorry as stands no chance winning the quarterback competition

  6. SB~LV Says:

    Good to hear!
Mayfield has so much more game experience he should be the starter, however Trask looking good and confident is a win -win .
Trask is a low key slow developing QB as his history suggests.
As long as he is ready when it comes is fine with me.

  7. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ Trask already has the physical traits and if his decision-making is on par with Brady’s”

Its getting delusional now….nobody’s decision making has ever been on pars with Brady let alone a guy yet to play an NFL snap.

    LOLOLOOLOLOLOLL!!!!!!!!!

Brady’s decision-making ability is literally what made him the greatest to ever play, and you’re just casually saying if Trask just simply has that same ability, he’ll win the job.

If Trask has that ability, he’ll be following Brady into the HOF, and the Bucs will win 5 more Super Bowls behind him.

    Calm down.

  9. NCBucfan Says:

I think we will have to cut bait with mayfield if Kyle earns the starting nod. He will most likely cry like a little bi$$h, and be a distraction.

  10. Jenkins Says:

SB~LV Says: “Trask is a low key slow developing QB as his history suggests.”

You obviously don’t know his history. In only his second year at Florida (2018) he beat out the much-hyped and much-higher-rated Feleipe Franks (now with the Falcons) for the starting QB job, but then suffered a leg injury that kept him out for the rest of the season. His third season (2019) at Florida was very good and his third season (2020) at Florida was lights out, setting all new Florida passing records and some SEC passing records. He even had a year of eligibility left but opted for the draft. How is all that “slow developing”? SMH.

  11. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    We’re all friends here Joe.

Perhaps Trask got the majority of the snaps today to balance Mayfield being planned working with the first team 1st day of hitting.

I’m sure the Joe’s had their collective ears to the ground as did others and heard the hard lean inside OneBuc towards Baker after his signing.

Trask had almost been a punchline as the #3 and certainly we saw Brady chuckle a few times when asked about Kyle. I get the impression that Brady didn’t take Trask under his wing. He big leagued him from what I could tell.

So everything Trask got from Brady was from being in orbit of the situation outside a few a cordially answered questions Trask might have gotten in here or there.

Think about why the Bucs drafted Trask considering the criticism about his habits of cookieing the ball at times. It was because of what he had going on between his ears and his ability to process complexity like an NFL QB in the SEC – which he absolutely shredded.

How much is this Canales’ influence? Are we witnessing something? Trask’s ability to see and process – is Canales adding to that? I thought last preseason Trask’s mechanics had become more Brady-like, but Canales is a big footwork guy it seems. Good foundation means velocity.

Tough luck for Baker who undoubtedly heard like you and everyone else that Trask was vulnerable and his spot tenuous. Had to be a part of the decision to come to Tampa on a scratch deal.

Trask is crashing that comeback party like it’s a “I took that personally” Jordan meme.

Who says life after Brady can’t be fun?

Of course if Bucs don’t win games we’ll all go back to being salty af.

    Bring on the pads tomorrow!

  12. Dooley Says:

Seems like Canales is alternating days as far as the lions share of QB reps go. Both seem to be getting a fair amount daily, but iirc Mayfield got the majority of PT with the 1’s on day one and if it were an every other thing, makes sense Trask would get the majority of snaps on day 4(?) today.

Sounds like Carlton Davis is the one hanging the Trask banner to me. Fellow players see who works harder and they see who is not afraid to stick their nose in the grinder to get the hard yards , and that looks to be Trask. I will say it again , watch the running game and it will become apparent who the Oline wants as their QB.

  21. Mike C Says:

Wow, early noise for Trask, I like it, might actually get a real QB competition, which is good for the team.

  22. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

1976 when you over promise and under deliver people get weary.

Just like Godwin said on the Rich Eisen show – talk is cheap.

Baker has to prove it on the field. No more talk. No more bravado. Show up and grind. Get after it. 100% buy-in.

On the break Trask worked out with receivers. Mayfield went to Tahoe to play golf. Who do think showed his teammates he wants it more? This is a QB battle. This team is getting disrespected everywhere and the gauntlet has been thrown. These guys are serious as heart attacks.

  23. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Rod you’ll love us when Trask throws for 3 bills and 4 tuds.

  24. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Jose, God love ya but it’s time to stop being surprised by Trask. The kid can play.

    ————–

I have nothing against Trask, as I said I hope he’s the starter this year, regardless of outcome – be it good or bad, just let him play and lets see what we have, then next year we’ll know if we need to spend a top pick on a QB, or if we already have a QB. With Mayfield, it feels like a completely wasted season since we know what he is already.

But yeah, if Trask is good, I’ll be more than happy with that.

My only issue are the idiot Florida fanbois who are casually comparing Trask to Brady and saying if you don’t think he’s a first ballot HOFer, you’re a hater. Those people are just retarded.

  27. Craig Says:

I can only think how good he will be when he has enough games under hm that the game mentally slows down for him.

I hope it is here, but he still has an uphill battle to get to be starter.

The Bowles cleaner is still in need of experience to justify his job future, so Trask needs to keep progressing.

Its getting delusional now….nobody’s decision making has ever been on pars with Brady let alone a guy yet to play an NFL snap.

So Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, and Patrick Mahomes never existed? Tom Brady is the best decision-maker ever because his decision-making was consistent in the regular season, playoffs, and super bowl appearances. Brees, Rodges, and Manning don’t have as many Super Bowl appearances as Tom Brady because they always chocked in the playoffs. Mahomes on the other hand, may surpass Tom Brady because he Andy Reid is a better head coach than Bill Belichick because Belichick has a losing record without Tom Brady.

    Rod Munch Says:

Brady’s decision-making ability is literally what made him the greatest to ever play, and you’re just casually saying if Trask just simply has that same ability, he’ll win the job. Just because Trask can make the right decision for which play to change to, adjust blocking assignments before the play starts, and throw to the right person after the play starts doesn’t mean he can throw the ball to complete the pass, especially in very stressful situations.

Brady’s decision-making, powerful throwing arm, precision throwing accuracy, pocket presence, and preparation to win the most important NFL games made him the greatest quarterback of all time.

  29. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

It’s kinda a contract year for both these guys. Highly motivating those contract years are you know….

  30. Duane Says:

Kyle Trask may or may not win the starters job for Week 1 …. what may be more telling is who has the starters job in Week 5, then Week 10, then Week 17 (and we would hope, beyond). It is gratifying to see Trask respond well to coaching. But the Bucs haven’t donned the pads yet, or play the three preseason games that only point to who starts Week 1. It’s a long season, with more seasons to follow. We hope it will be mostly enjoyable.

  31. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

I definitely see shades of Brady’s game in Trask. My assumption is Brady had a program dialed in and all QBs in the room followed it.

“Hello I’m Tom Brady, greatest QB in NFL history. You might have heard of me. This is how we do things now.”

What Brady did to prepare Trask did also. So the eye says “This guy plays like Brady!” and people get excited.

You’re absolutely right. There’s only one Tom Brady. Let’s not embarrass ourselves here.

But if Trask took those lessons to heart and adds mobility to it there’s cause for optimism.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Jack Clark – The reason Brady lasted until the 6th round is because he did NOT have a ‘powerful throwing arm’. In fact with Trask, I said the one thing that can give the Trask fanbois hope is that Brady also didn’t drive the ball coming out of college, and was thought to have a weak arm early in his NFL career, yet he was able to increase his velocity as his career went on. In fact, by the time he got the Bucs, he was throwing just about as hard as he ever threw the ball.

Maybe learn the basics before you step up to commenting with the big boys, kiddo.

Tom Brady Scouting Report from 2000

Negatives: Poor build. Very skinny and narrow. Ended the ’99 season weighing 195 pounds and still looks like a rail at 211. Looks a little frail and lacks great physical stature and strength. Can get pushed down more easily than you’d like. Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush. Lacks a really strong arm. Can’t drive the ball down the field and does not throw a really tight spiral. System-type player who can get exposed if he must ad-lib and do things on his own.

  33. Mike S Says:

Duane Week 1 is in the crosshairs right now.

A lot of people are sleeping on Kyle Trask because he’s an unknown commodity; I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t win the starting job…Im a Seminole fan so I don’t classify as a Kyle Trask “fanboy”…That said, I watched him alot in college; I like how he played in big games…I was genuinely happy when we drafted him and I really like his demeanor…For kicks and giggles, these are some of his more impressive stat lins…

    – Kyle Trask vs. Georgia
    474 passing 4 TDs. 1 Int.

    – Kyle Trask vs. Alabama
    408 passing 3 TDs.

    – Kyle Trask vs. Tennessee
    433 yard passing 4 TDs.

    Kyle Trask vs. Ol Miss
    416 yards passing 6 TDs.

    Kyle Trask vs. Texas A&M
    312 yards passing 3 TDs…

Let’s see the man lead his team to victory in a real NFL game. This is all totally meaningless.

  37. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘it’s certainly a real competition that will take center stage when the pads come on tomorrow’.

Far cry from what was being written here & elsewhere about this being a QB competition in name-only. Majority of JBFers (wasn’t it over 70%) were convinced that Mayfield was the Week 1 starter by default.

Now? Seems to be some uncertainty brewing. Why? Maybe because the real Kyle Trask is showing up now that he’s being given an honest chance to strut his stuff with the 1’s? Still, only time will tell who gets the starting nod against the Vikes.

  38. TB2023 Says:

Any aspect of Brady that Trask might have (that one can struggle desperately to identify)(give me a break) is irrelevant. This is Rah Rah Canales’ offense. Think Russell Wilson and Geno Smith. Who resembles them more, Mayfield or Trask?
    You guys know the answer.

The question is whether Mayfield will play like a knucklehead and lose the job.
“I’m wired different. I don’t need anybody on the outside to tell me what I can and can’t do.” Okay.

Maybe we need to watch what John Wolford is doing.

  47. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Some guys spend way too much time on JBF. Sorry Jose! Anyway, we won a SB with Brad freaking Johnson. The ravens did it with Dilfer. Both Mayfield and Trask have greater abilities than those two put together. Get the right defense, minimize offensive mistakes and start winning. Seems like the right OC for that formula.

  48. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

By the way, this is your monthly reminder that Jameis Winston is not coming back.

  49. Oneilbuc Says:

Eric. Why are you moving the goal post if he was playing bad you wouldn’t be saying that. Give him his credt now I can see what’s going to happen the first time he has one bad game than I know some of yall will saying let’s tank for Caleb Williams watch and see if he’s the starter! It’s going to be some bucs fans hoping he failed especially FSU fans because that’s what this fan base do everything is base on what college a quarterback went to in the state Florida. I told y’all that the city of Tampa is a college town .

  50. ATLBuc Says:

I’m not sure Mayfield is better than Brad Johnson who has more than one playoff win and a Super Bowl ring

  51. ATLBuc Says:

Tomorrow pads come on and Mayfield will certainly be more adversely affected by batted down balls and interceptions. He’s pressing. The better Trask plays the worse he plays. We already know who the starter will be. By Friday everyone will know

  52. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Steele Trask’s release has quickened. He’s more quiet and efficient in the pocket. He looks defenders off and throws to spots where only his receiver has the opportunity. He’s mastering the back shoulder throw. All Brady’s tricks and methods have been drilled into him for two seasons.

Now Canales is adding some RPO, waggles, wheels, slants and a bunch more play action. It’s actually bringing him back to Dan Mullens’ style of offense. You noticed they haven’t taken out the TE seam though – a Brady staple. That’s not a play designed for Baker Mayfield. That’s all Trask.

    Plus added velocity.

I like the synergy. Bucs might have developed a QB. It’s super early yet, but I like what I’m seeing and hearing.

There are already QBs out there better than Brad, like Mahommes for one. Trask is going to win the starting job and take us to a super bowl victory, this year!
