Luke Goedeke Explains How He Moved To Right Tackle

Anyone who follows Bucs right tackle Luke Goedeke on Instagram knows the Wisconsin native has really developed a fondness for saltwater fishing on the Gulf.
Just a week or so before training camp, Goedeke shared photos of a day on the Gulf with a handful of teammates, and the results of their efforts. Let’s just say it was a very productive afternoon.
“It was like a commercial fishing boat,” Goedeke joked.
Goedeke then told Joe that, yes, in Wisconsin, when you land a bunch of fish from a day on the water, it’s referred to as a “mess” of fish. But what he and his teammates reeled in that day on the Gulf was, Goedeke said, “More than a mess.”
Sort of like the Bucs’ offensive line last year.
First, Ryan Jensen went down before August hit. Then, Donovan Smith got hurt in the opening game and was never 100 percent.
Unfortunately for Goedeke, he tried to replace fan favorite Ali Marpet at left guard as a rookie at a foreign position. He struggled and fans freaked out about the plunge in play of the line. Goedele was a prime target.
This year, with Tristan Wirfs moving from right to left tackle, the Bucs had a hole up front and moved Goedeke to right tackle, a position he played in college. When Goedeke started at right tackle for an injured Wirfs in the regular season’s final game, Goedeke looked comfortable.
“Yeah, definitely, I’m a lot more comfortable at right tackle,” Goedeke told Joe. “Toward the end of the year, I was feeling comfortable at left guard, too. But I love playing right tackle.”
So Joe asked Goedeke if he lobbied to move to right tackle. He did not. Joe then asked if the Bucs told him one reason for the switch is because he appeared to play smoother there. That never came up, Goedeke said.
“Wasn’t my decision, it was the Bucs’,” Goedeke said. “I just work here. Whatever they tell me to do — if they tell me to jump, I’ll ask, ‘How high?'”
Goedeke added he was moved because the Bucs had a need at right tackle. Goedeke was thankful and he began prepping to return to his old college position.
“It feels great out there,” he said.

So what kind of fish did they catch? Bet he is better this year, he has acclimated to the environment and climate. and he is alot more comfortable he says at right tackle. He has probably bought a boat and made some friends. Life is easier, less stress. Good.

No idea why at this point, but I’ve got a feeling that this year’s OLine will be a huge improvement over last year’s. Getting Jensen back as the leader will be gigantic to be sure, but I think we’re finally putting the right pieces in the right spots to get back to our 2020 & 2021 capabilities. Luke’s gonna be a big part of that at RT, as will Tristan at LT & Matt at Guard.
Not convinced yet that the rookie Cody Mauch is the answer at the other Guard, but we’ve got several guys who’ve manned-up there before. Competition is a beautiful thing, and they’re all hungry.

Joe was told there was no guarantee Stinnie was going to make the final-53 (which would explain why he was on the field when he was in preseason.

Have to love the attitude of the whole offensive line. There is talent there so hopefully the entire group is able to come together and be a force.

Wasn’t All World Right Tackle Tristian Wirfs that pointed out that Goedke may be the strongest dude on the roster? And now Goedeke points out how comfortable he is manning the right side? Good vibes at Joe Bucs World HQ?

Goedeke looks like a right tackle. I still think he has the frame to grow unlike 3rd rounder Cody Mauch. Goedeke looks like a mauler while Mauch appear light footed to be a pulling guard.

The teams with the strongest trenches win. I know it’s July and first week of cam, but feeling a whole lot better than in April. Need to see the guys in pads and against another team. Trends are going in the right direction.

Gotta love days like that – pulling in one fish after another…
I’m still confused as to why the Bucs are seemingly making the same mistake with Mauch that they did with Goedeke. Moving him to a new position AND to the opposite side of the line the player is comfortable with and used to.
Goedeke played RT – so they moved him to left Guard and he struggled early.
Now they are moving Mauch to RG when he was a LT in College. And expecting Cody to start from day 1. Why?
Why not have Mauch take the spot at LEFT Guard – between Wirfs and Jensen?
I get that FA Feiler is already comfortable at LG – but he played 3 years as a RT for the Steelers.
It seems to me that it would be much easier for the 30 year old (who has already played on both sides of the center) to transition back from left to right side than expecting a rookie to do it successfully…
But what do I know – right?

No clue. Joe’s not a fish guy. Joe’s old man taught him long ago, “You shoot it, you hook it, you eat it.” Joe doesn’t do fish so never been fishing and don’t pay attention to the creatures.
Simple: Projections. Bucs (and most NFL teams) have all sorts of data and trends where a college guy would best fit on the roster. Licht looked at Mauch’s abilities and based on his years of research and available data, they believe Mauch is a guard.

Joe – I’m not saying don’t move Mauch to Guard – I’m asking why move him to the Right side – when he is used to playing on the left side?
Put him at LG between Wirfs and Jensen – because he is a rookie and they can help him out a lot! That is my contention.
Feiler is just a place holder for that spot now – he won’t be here in 2 or 3 years…..
Stick Mauch at LG and let him stay there for the next 10 years….
Feiler can fight it out with Leverette and Hainsey (and Stinnie) for the open RG spot…..
Just sayin…. Seems like they are making the same mistake they made with Goedeke.

Luke Goedeke sounds like a good man and I’m glad he’s playing in the position he’s best at. I wish him the best of luck in protecting Baker Mayfield’s sorry as

Hoping he does well. I live not too far from where he played in high school. In fact a coworker of mine played against him in high school. So I’m really hoping he does well.

The Oline is big this year.
LT Wirfs 6’5″ 320lbs
LG Feiler 6’6″ 330lbs
C Jensen 6’4 319lbs
RG Mauch 6’5″ 302lbs
RT Goedeke 6’5″ 312lbs
It’s going to be a fun watching this offensive line. They are going to road graders this year. The running backs have to be stoked.
