Todd Bowles Says Joe Tryon-Shoyinka Is A Step Or Two Away

Todd Bowles explains.
Earlier this year from the combine in Indianapolis, Bucs coach Todd Bowles said that Joe Tryon-Shoyinka needs to finish his rushes.
Bowles explained his first couple of steps are pretty good. But he needed to learn how to finish to be a strong pass rusher.
“For me, Joe has to finish at the top of the rush,” Bowles said after practice today. “He beats linemen and either slips down or falls off the quarterback because he’s launching too early and not running through the quarterback.
“He has to take those extra two steps. He left a lot of sacks out there last year – not that he didn’t get back there but he didn’t finish the play. Finishing at the top of the rush is just as important as beating a guy initially off the line of scrimmage.
“Me and Joe talked about this and he understands that and he’s working towards that and that’s what we need to see from him.”
Later, Bowles confessed JTS has competition from Anthony Nelson to start at outside linebacker.
So to Joe, it seems the Bucs organization of the Bucs is sending a message to JTS both personally and indirectly: produce or step aside.
Just yesterday Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht said JTS, a man he drafted, needs to “step up” this fall, his third season. Now Bowles says JTS’s starting job isn’t locked in stone.
Messages have been sent. Will JTS hear them and act accordingly?

JTS said he himself he was watching his cut ups all off-season and it burned him up being so close and not finishing. He said he was committed to making the jump this year. Seems motivated to me and I hope he finally develops.
Now I’m more excited for Calijah where I read and heard was in the backfield all day beating double teams and one on ones in almost every drill including 11on11… can’t wait to see if it’s the same thing when pads come on!!

So many times last year JTS got hands on the QB but didn’t get the sack. There’s no doubt he can beat his man and get to the QB. He just needs to learn how to get him on the ground consistently

JTS needs to be coachable, with Todd Bowles giving him the directions he needs to follow. If he does let himself be coached and respond accordingly, he has the physical talent to be very good. The third year will be the true test.

JTS is winning at the LOS. He is getting to the QB frequently. He needs to improve his abilities at the point of attack. Slow down and be in control and make the play…
He was so close to having 10+ sacks last year it was ridiculous.
I believe JTS will have over 8 sacks this season and hopefully more.

JTS reminds me of the “Clifford Franklin” character in the movie “The Replacements.” In the movie, Clifford is a WR who can beat coverage but can’t catch the ball which initially makes him a useless WR but being a movie, Clifford overcomes the issue and catches clutch passes. Doesn’t matter if JTS can beat the defender but can’t catch the QB and this isn’t a movie. I hope he makes the leap but like many, I’m skeptical.

JTS is just one or two techniques from getting to the inside. when he does… look out. shaq should be able to coach this kid up.

He reaches and grabs too much instead of running through the tackle and wrapping up – happens in both the run and pass game
Can AWIII just be the new tackling coach? Dude has absolute perfect form and tackles anyone no matter their size or momentum advantage….
I’d have him leading tackling drills every day – JTS could learn a lot about breaking down and exploding through a tackle….

That jumping, or leaving his feet, sounds analogous to a receiver who leaves his feet when the ball arrives. He will just have to work it out with lots and lots of practice.

8 sacks in his first two years does not equal a bust. It’s not great or anything, but that’s not a bust. Hopefully he can just get that step and wrap-up taken care of, and he should become a solid, if unspectacular, player.

I wanna see better bend, stronger hands, and more control transtioning from get off to playing through blockers. JTS has been knocking on the door since he got here, it’s year 3 and now time to start kicking that mf’er off the hinges. Took 2 seasons for Nelly to start showing up, and to me the team will be better with both contributing not either or.

Nassib had the problem of not finish plays to yield sacks and TFLs. JTS is more athletic and talented so with more practice he should learn to finish.

This is simple …sometimes it takes a player some time to develop…he is still learning that the NFL game demands strength at the point of attack! He will be better this season!

If the interior of the D-line is a lot quicker with Kancey, JTS might not need those two steps.
If the QB is flushed and heads toward JTS, I doubt he would miss.

I think Hall should be improve, and the Bucs have some solid defensive line depth for once, and so guys should be fresher, and in return they should get more pressure.
Kancey, I strongly believe, is going to be a very good player, maybe even great, but even 1st ballot HOF all-time greats like Sapp didn’t do a lot in their rookie years. But the new coach, next year, should be really excited about some of the young guys on this team.

Bowles is a fool if he has given anyone on the first team the idea that they can’t be replaced by next week. I played the game and if I had a couple of poor practices, I knew there were a couple of guys who could and would get my snaps.

JTS is always a couple steps away and it is not good enough, this is NFL not college ball. He needs to be an animal, probably busy learning his sack dance moves. He needs to be going all animal on anyone in his way
