It’s a safe bet that new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales doesn’t know he has a YouTube star in his backfield.
And there’s plenty more that Canales doesn’t know about his players.
That’s by design.
During a visit to the 2 B’s In A Pod podcast, Canales explained that he doesn’t want to be influenced by how players sell themselves publicly. He wants to treat them based on how they behave within the team structure. A guy’s brand? Canales has no interest.
As a 42-year-old guy living in the modern world, Canales has a social media presence, but he explained it’s not for him to get personal and is primarily to share motivational messages.
It’s all part of an overall approach, Canales said, for players to feel like One Buc Palace is a safe place that doesn’t include what they’re invovled in off the field. He wants to get to know players via how they interact within the team, and there’s still time to get to know them personally — and their families — on their terms.

For optimistic Bucs fans, don’t expect much from the Bucs offense this season especially with a first year play caller at the healm.
The idea that it’s going to be an upgrade just because the “boogey man” Leftwhich is gone is ludicrous.
Caneles resume is VERY weak, never called plays in Seattle and gets an OC job because Geno Smith has 1 slightly above average season as a quarterbacks coach which is a mostly figurehead position
And for the record, if he does succeed, I’m giving all credit to mighty Bruce Arians who will be in a hawian shirt in a press box vetoing and checking every little call Caneles makes….that’s how it works right Leftwhich haters??

Tbbucs3 – Actually he got demoted in Seattle as he went from QB coach, to Passing Game Coordinator, then was forced back to QB coach. I don’t know which position is the demotion, but I know it was a demotion.
Also Geno Smith had a good half year, then an average half year. Still, for Geno Smith, that’s impressive. What that has to do with a QB coach, however, I have no idea. I understand with a young QB, that a QB coach can help them transition to the NFL – but for an old guy, I’m not sure what a QB coach actually does.
As for Leftwich, your comment falls apart. Arians got credit for the Bucs offensive, since, you know, it was literally Arians offense. Literally all dummy Leftwich was doing was picking plays from Arians playbook when Arians was HC. Once Arians left, dummy Leftwich thought he’d improve on Arians offense, by running the same plays over and over and over again – but adding the new wrinkle of 1 yard screen passes on 2nd down. Had Arians actually been in the booth telling him what to do, Leftwich wouldn’t have failed. Your comment literally makes no sense, just like the idea of someone actually defending that idiot Leftwich makes zero sense.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from JBF is that when a comment from Rod Munch appears, it’s wrong.
I love how you suggest NFL play calling is just as easy as “picking plays from a playbook” like its some sort of video game.
The idea that Leftwhich doesn’t get any credit from a vast majority of Bucs fans for 2020/2021 is UTTER NONSENSE. The man called the plays to help win a superbowl….oh but that’s right Rod, NFL play calling is just picking plays from a playbook that’s all….has nothing to do with reading complex defenses and calling plays to attack those weakness on the fly, all of which BL did very well for 3 years from 2019-2021…..in 2022 the Bucs had 1 offensive weapon (ME) and that’s it.
Also, the Bucs used the same playbook and same terminology from Arians playbook so your arguments flawed.
We act like Bruce Arians some sort of football god now when he was just an above average coach nothing more nothing less for many years in Arizona. Overall, The reason the Bucs were dominate in 2020/2021 was because the offensive roster was ELITE and the reason we sucked in 2022 was because the players SUCKED. #Simpleasthat

If Byron Leftwich deserved all this so called credit, he’d have a job in the NFL. He proved what he deserved last year. It was like someone told him the goal was to act like you don’t know what you’re doing out there. Good look not destroying some college program Byron.

In 2020/2021 Bruce Arians controlled the play book with his big red pen. When the red pen no longer restrained him, Leftwich went biserk!!

On topic, I want great things from Dave Canales. That said, I’m also concerned that we could see a Luvie Smith/Dirk Koetter situation.
Barring a playoff appearance, I fully expect Bowles to be fired after this season. The big question is Dave Canales. If he does well enough to impress, he could be offered Bowles job.
We saw the same thing happen with Dirk.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Dave Canales might be the next big football coach for all we know…but the odds have to be against it.

Leftwich is currently unemployed for a reason. Most think it is gross ineptitude but there is a possibility he is simply the fall guy for the total team failure in 2022 and is blackballed as a result. Either way, the new OC deserves a chance before we fans bury him like Leftwich.

Can def see a scenario where the Bucs move on from 40%Bowles and give Canales a shot to grow into the HC position, especially if he’s getting interest from around the league as the next “McVay”. Would think he’d probably retain play-calling duties but tab Idzik as his OC as well, and possibly try and lure someone like Carl Smith from Sea to assist in his transition to HC. Though I think he and Mayfield will likely mesh well, adding in a new rookie QB to the mix would def start a new era.

Tbbucs3 & Rod Munch … Interesting differing viewpoints comparing Byron Leftwich & Dave Canales. Both have a lengthy NFL resume … Leftwich 9 years as a QB then 7 years as a coach, 5 of those as an OC, and Canales 13 years as a WR-QB-Passing Game Coordinator). Both are essentially the same age (Leftwich 43 & Canales 42). Both learned from successful coaches with different backgrounds (Lefty from Bruce Arians, an offensive coach & Canales from Pete Carroll, a defensive coach).
Just looking at that, one would expect BL to be the superior OC (based on his background as an NFL QB, his tutelage under BA & his 5 years as an NFL OC). And yet, almost all perceptions of the two are exactly the opposite of that. I keep wondering why.
The 2 years that Byron operated without BA, he failed rather miserably. Arizona went 3-13 in 2018 with Steve Wilks as HC (a defensive coach) and BL & Mike McCoy as the OCs that year (having new QB Josh Rosen probably didn’t help his learning curve). Then last year he went 8-9 with Todd Bowles as HC (another defensive coach) but with The GOAT as his QB. But sandwiched in-between (with BA overseeing his work AND with some superior team talent to work with?), he went 31-18 plus 5 out of 6 playoff wins and a SB championship.
Odds are very good that we’ll never know who the REAL Byron Leftwich is, and how much involvement Bruce Arians had in the game planning. But we’re about to find out who the real Dave Canales is. Here’s hoping that he’s the real deal & can mold this ‘retooled’ offense into an effective TEAM.

@DR Good analysis of the situation but I remember Coach Arians saying about BL as they were transitioning is that Byron knows his (Arians) plays but not his playbook. Looking back that foreshadowed the season the Bucs had on offense.

Un ‘fn believable. So the hate of the team from some “supposed fan” posts on this post are so strong we’re now going to now defend/support Lefty?! Why are some of you soooo excited to see the Bucs fail?
Some of you all are giving me an ice-cream headache. I get that maybe we shouldn’t drink the cool-aid about the upcoming season, but shouldn’t pisz in it either.

@Tbbucs3 I guess winning NFL Coach of the Year, like Arians has makes him just above average in your screwed-up opinion. That is ridiculous to me.
As for Rod Munch (a self-described “fancy man”), I remain constantly surprised that his user name is even permitted on this website. That aside, although I rarely agree with him, his comments are usually interesting.

Then how do you explain Bucs going 7-9 in 2019? Who was calling the plays that year?
Oh I forgot Chris, we’ve already designated Jameis as the scapegoat for that year, so BL & BA get a pass for that one. Just like Bowles was the scapegoat for many in 2022. For some others of us, football is a TEAM SPORT and losses can rarely be pinned on 1 individual.
