One of Todd Bowles’ loyal soldiers made it crystal clear that the Bowles way on offense is about running the football effectively.
That’s no surprise, but it sure hit different hearing it come from Bowles’ offensive coordinator in such a passionate and direct way.
During his visit to the 2 B’s In A Pod podcast, Tampa Bay playcaller Dave Canales was talking about serving his head coach. Many coordinators go there, as do general managers. Not all, but many.
Canales said meeting Bowles’ wishes means pounding the rock.
“How can I help Coach Todd Bowles be the best head coach possible? Well, I can help him by complementing the defense and the special teams by running the ball and playing that style of offense that he wants,” Canales said, adding that “I can help these quarterbacks.”
So there you have it everyday offense. Running the rock is the style Bowles wants.
Again, no surprise. But that Canales take further emphasizes just how much faith the Bucs have in Rachaad White’s game taking a major step forward.

A great defense needs to be able to rest. No matter how good they are, the D will suffer if the offense is turning in a lot of three and outs. That’s what happened to our Defense last year. They had worn down by the end of the year.

“Help these quarterbacks.” Interesting quote. I’ve always maintained that Bowles’ offensive philosophy was vastly different than BA’s Don Coryell system. Brady was helpless last year with a non existent running game. Brady didn’t play his best last year. Anyone who disagrees is lying, but he was a 45 year old QB and we did nothing to complement him. Brady and Bowles were in agreement last year about running the ball effectively and efficiently. Efficiently being the key word. He did not want to drop back 50x a game, especially with that horrible OL. When i hear from a receiver like Chris Godwin emphasizing the importance of the run game, you know the offense went south last year. He probably was also sick of being used on screens as an extension of the run game so much because we couldn’t get any traction running the ball.

Geez, the goal should be to have an aggressive defense, but still do whatever it takes to move the chains and score points. I don’t like the idea of trying to commit to the run and continually get in third and long situations. I’m not saying the run should be abandoned, but I think there needs to be a balance.

Well when the defense knows your going to run It and exactly where what did you expect. They also knew exactly when. Every DC had offense figured out before the games were even played.

Given the def guru Bowles is, he’d want an offense that gives him the most difficulty to game plan for. Offenses like lets say the 49ers…has to be a bitch to plan for. Hopefully it pays off for all of us.

The Bucs offense will be more BALANCED. That’s a good thing. It doesn’t mean they’ll go from 32nd to 1st in rushing. I can already see their vision of increased running efficiency. It will help set up the pass game, increase time of possession, keep opposing defenses honest, lead to more scoring opportunities (especially in the red zone), and rest the Bucs defense. If they can play disciplined and limit turnovers too… that would exceed all of my expectations this year.

So…I don’t care much for Bowles as head coaches ach at present…but…going heavy on the run makes sense.
For the offensive line to develop into a good unit, they’ll need to get better at run blocking first…then the quality of pass blocking will come.
But, here’s the thing…the offensive line is not going to do well from the start. It is going to be downright ugly in the beginning…even if they remain healthy (and that’s a big IF).
I don’t expect the run blocking to be there…and the DEFENSE always takes 2-5 games to get rolling. Every. Year.
So, although I thing we MIGHT win the first game, I also think we’ll be playing from behind a lot during the first half of the season…and that means abandoning the run…or…the OL just won’t do well at run blocking at first.
So I believe we will have no choice but to throw the ball, and teams will aim for that to happen. because, in the end, forcing Baker Mayfield to throw the ball more will doom us.
And by the bye week? There will be lots of talk about switching quarterbacks.

Look, if the BUCS can run the ball effectively I’m all for it. Pound that rock, just not the way Doug Martin did. (Koff, koff)
But like the Joes (at least one of them, but I think both) always say: it’s a passing league.
We are highly, highly unlikely to beat Atlanta running the ball. It’s questionable, even with Canales redesigning the run game, that we outrush the Saints, or Panthers either. We will most indubitably need to pass more effectively as well as being a lot better running.

This offense is in for a change indeed but I do remember Todd emphasizing the fact that he has 2, 1,000 yard receivers. Maybe some smoke here with all this talk about the run?
I agree the offense was very unbalanced last year however we lost our anchor on day 2 and our all pro guard smartly called it quits.
I just can’t get around the fact that we are going to battle with a second year rookie rashad white and sneak Vaughn who barely saw the field last year. Just doesn’t make sense. Makes me think Licht and Bowles were looking at drafting the Alabama running back like Sullivan predicted.

you can say you are gonna run the ball till youre blue in the face. All 32 teams want to run the ball. The game is about getting 1st downs hell or high water. Saying you are gonna run the ball and not have offensive turnovers is chump talk..no duh, really. Bowles is gonna fail if bowles has his hands on it. Running effectively today is more about keeping teams off balance and unpredictable. I dont care how u do it..just get 1st downs!!! Every coach that says we are gonna run the ball usually fails. Hope canales is just saying fluff ..cause bowles philosophy is outdated. Hope he can help the qbs..cause geno smith always sucked..and i must admit he played great for once last season.

You’ve taken what Canales said to the extreme Joe. He didn’t say that all we’re gonna do is run the rock. According to you, Canales said ‘Bowles way on offense is about running the football EFFECTIVELY’. We certainly didn’t do that last year, and it cost us.
‘Effectively’ to me doesn’t mean running the ball 100% of the time; not necessarily even 50% of the time. It simply means running the ball such that opponents have to honor the possibility of a run at all times (or at least as often as possible).
I’d be surprised if the Bucs run the ball more than 40-45% of the plays as their seasonal average. THAT’S Bowles history with the Jets, and that seems to be what most of today’s coaches strive for. A few go run-heavy obviously (Ravens, Eagles, etc) but they build their offense accordingly. We haven’t.

This should be no surprise. Bowles mantra on defense is stop the run first, right? So on offense Bowles wants to do to defenses what he knows does the most damage. Pounding the living Sh%t out of ya!

BUCING THE TREND
Every team is going high-powered, pass-first, offenses. That means every defense is geared to stop the pass. Running is suddenly new again, so the team may have success.

Joe, Do we have any clue yet on what this offense will look like?
I guess our past history has me terrified by thought of Errict Rhett (I loved him as a kid but this is 2023)
At worst it sounds like 3 yards and cloud if dust.
Hearing things like run first and “I can help these QBs” makes me more optimistic (Todd Bowles aside) and think of the Shanahan style offense that delivers easy throws to guys schemed wide open based off of a killer run game.
Canales is a younger coach. Younger people aren’t wired to unimaginably run up the gut on first and second down.
One can dream.

The formula to win superbowls in this day and age is out there and well documented and none of those have a predominately run offense even with considerably better running running backs and offensive line than we have. To wish that one of the running backs we have is going to have a stellar season and the offensive line is going to open up holes big enough for the cheerleaders to run through.(I hope that happens) is wishful thinking. Ours is a blueprint for mediocrity and that’s exactly what we will get.

Ah the Eagles were #3 on run attempts last year. Saying no good teams run the balls is ignorant of the facts.
The bucs could be very eagle like in how they spread the ball and attack the field. 2-3 dynamic WR, a pass catching rb. Now TE is a question, and the OL has to step up.
