You Gotta Have Sacks

July 17th, 2023

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

Long-time readers of JoeBucsFan.com know that Joe often jokes (?) of having an erection for sacks.

Yeah, Joe has fans come at him trying to claim pressure is as important if not more so. Joe never bought that. Good quarterbacks can handle pressure. A sack is finite. Play is over. Loss of yards.

Often, sacks have been called “drive killers.” That moniker has never been more true than recent NFL stats show.

Handicapper turned stathead Warren Sharp had very eye-opening stats about sacks in his “Warren Sharp’s 2023 Football Preview.” The publication is a very deep statistical dive on each team and the entire NFL.

Per Sharp, if a team can prevent a sack, it is more likely to score points than punt, and the percentages aren’t close. Likewise, there is a large divide between punts and points scored for teams that allow a sack on a drive.

So more than ever, the Bucs need sacks. And they need an edge rusher.

With Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett coming off a blown Achilles and possibly unavailable in Week 1, this leaves a ton of pressure on Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to not just get pressures, but put the quarterback on the ground (with the ball).

Well, if they don’t generate them this year it’s not due to lack of trying by the front office. Three top 33 pick defensive linemen in the last three drafts, plus two more pass rush specialists in this last draft. It’s up to the players and the coaches now.

  2. Buc4evr Says:

If we are relying on JTS I’m afraid that we won’t be getting very many sacks this season. Every season for this guy is a prove it season, but he never proves anything other than he is a bust.

  3. Red Skeleton Says:

Pressure and sacks go together. There is different kinds of pressure. There is the pressure where a QB steps up or rolls away to avoid it. These don’t compare to sacks. Then there is pressure where a QB is running for his life, forces an interception or bad throw, or like Brady last year, hurry throws to avoid getting hit. Brady felt the pressure last year and it showed. Mahomies felt the pressure and sacks against the Bucs in the Super Bowl. That was what pressure can do.

  4. Dooley Says:

Oh look, another article about JTS needing to get more sacks. Considering we blitzed less in 2022, had 14 different players record at least one sack with 10 of those 14(Hicks, Nacho, Nassib, & Gholston are gone) players returning in ’23. We still managed to finish in the top 10 in sacks per game and total sacks w/45 total QB takedowns. Also, half of our schedule is filled by teams lead by QBs who can threaten our D with their legs, so I imagine we’ll still be seeing JTS as the primary QB spy and out in that shallow zone in the flats on a weekly basis, again.

Imagine what we could do in terms of pressuring the pocket if our offense can be better building and maintaining a leads and not punting at the frequency that had the 2022 offense ranked 8th for the most punts last season, imagine.

SACKS MEAN THE WORLD ( ASK THE LATE GREAT “DEACON JONES “..THE GREATEST SACK KING OF ALL-TIME )FOLLOWED BY REGGIE WHITE & LEE ROY SELMON..I HAVE A FEELING CALIJAH KANCEY WILL LEAD THE LEAGUE IN SACKS & BECOME DEFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR…RON HALL IS ALSO GOING TO HAVE A GREAT YEAR BY THE WAY, ALONG WITH VITA VEA..JOE TRYON NEEDS TO DROP THE “SHOYINKA” FROM HIS JERSEY & DEFENSIVE LINEMAN NEEDS TO TAKE DEACON’S # 75 & MAKE IT RUB OFF ON HIM ! I WATCHED DEACON JONES CHASE A FAST RUNNING BACK DOWN THE FIELD ABOUT 30 YDS ONE TIME & BLAST HIM OUT AT THE SIDELINE TO SAVE A SURE TOUCHDOWN..THE GUY LOOKED UP & SAID “IT’S YOU ?” & DEACON SMILED & SAID ” YEAH, IT’S ME !

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Until JTS proves me wrong, I will consider him as a Bust.

  7. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

I ADMIT DEACON INVENTED THE DOUBLE EAR HELMET POP & THE INFAMOUS HEADSLAP THAT HAVE SINCE BEEN OUTLAWED IN THE NFL BUT HE WAS STILL THE BEST D.LINEMAN TO EVER PUT ON A PAIR OF CLEATS..HE WAS BORN IN FLORIDA ( PROBABLY NOT FAR FROM FELLOW HALL OF FAMER WARREN SAPP..WALLY CHAMBERS ONLY PLAYED FOR ONE YEAR IN 1979 BUT WHAT A PAIR OF BOOKENDS HE & LEE ROY SELMON MADE THAT YEAR ! ! !

  8. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

JPP WAS A HARD PILL TO SWALLOW WHEN WE COULDN’T AFFORD TO RE-SIGN HIM..HE’S HEALTHY AGAIN NOW, HIS SHOULDER WAS ALL MESSED UP THE SEASON HE PLAYED BEFORE WE LET HIM GO..WOULD BE NICE TO GET HIM BACK ON A CAP FRIENDLY DEAL FOR THIS SEASON..HE CAN HOLD THE EDGE, BLOCK PASSES & KNOWS TODD BOWLES SYSTEM VERY WELL…SOMETHING TO SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT J.LIGHT,TODD BOWLES & THE GLAZERS..

  9. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

CAPTAIN HOOK (JPP) IS CAPABLE OF PLAYING VERY WELL WHEN HE’S HEALTHY ! ! !

  10. Mike Johnson Says:

I do hope Joe-Tryon has an Outstanding season this year. But how come I cannot visualize it? I’m just not feeling it. Best of Luck to him. Prove a lot of us wrong Joe.

  11. Infomeplease Says:

The rookies need to play like they belong in this league. That goes for JTS and LH too!!!! Or this team is doomed!

  12. Oviedo Jim Says:

JTS CAN’T HELP HAVING HIS NAME AND PITURE ON THIS WEBSITE DESPITE BEING A BAD PLAYER. ENOUGH ALREADY, PLEASE.

  13. Bucsfan13 Says:

The defense played well, but their dominance is quite overstated. Leftwich and the offense faced a considerably higher degree of difficulty than the defense. Here are lists of QBs that the Bucs defense faced:

    Week 1: Cooper Rush
    Week 2: Winston
    Week 3: Aaron Rodgers
    Week 4: Mahomes
    Week 5: Marcus Mariota
    Week 6: Kenny Pickett/Mitch Trubisky
    Week7 : PJ Walker
    Week: 8 Lamar Jackson
    Week 9: Matt Stafford
    Week 10: Geno Smith
    Week 11: Jacoby Brissett
    Week 12: Andy Dalton
    Week 13: Brock Purdy
    Week 14: Joe Burrow
    Week 15: Trace McSorley
    Week 16: Sam Darnold
    Week 17: Desmond Ridder

This is the defensive rankings of the teams the offense faced each week:

    Week 1: Dallas- ranked 6th
    Week 2: Saints -ranked 9th
    Week 3: Packers- ranked 16th
    Week 4: KC- ranked 18th
    Week 5: ATL- ranked 21st
    Week 6: Pitt- ranked 10th
    Week 7: Carolina- ranked 16th
    Week 8: Baltimore-ranked 3rd
    Week 9: Rams: ranked 20th
    Week 10: Seattle: ranked- 25th
    Week 11: Browns ranked- 19th
    Week 12: Saints ranked 9th
    Week 13: SF ranked 1st
    Week 14: Cindy ranked- 5th
    Week 15: Cardinals ranked 31st
    Week 16: Carolina ranked 16th
    Week 17: ATL ranked 21st

Did our offense underperform last year? Sure. But Leftwich and the offense faced an uphill battle all year with some of the tough defenses we faced. We also had to deal with major injuries and losses on the offense. Something the defense was able to avoid. We lost a pro bowl LG and C, and lost a pretty good RG. That’s a significant loss! We also lost a HOF TE. So when evaluating Leftwich and the offense, please take those losses into consideration. Oh, and I didn’t mention AB, a HOF receiver.

  14. 40Forever Says:

Joe, i’m not sure if it’s being neglectful or respectful about only mentioning Barrett’s return from Achilles. His return depends on mending a broken heart. That’s what I hope he can come back from. God bless their family.

  15. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

So far my favorite quote from JBF when a user said JTS looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane.

  16. Fred McNeil Says:

    40forever, I agree with that sentiment 100%.
God bless the Barrett’s and pring them inner peace.

  17. catcard202 Says:

JTS is a fine athlete but after 2yrs, he has yet to prove he can be a sack specialist…& has yet to show any dawg in him.

  18. kent kleist Says:

Joy Tryon ShoSTINKA is not the answer!

  19. HC Grover Says:

Out, Just get him out. Why is he even still here. Plan 9 is just a bust. Cut the losses.

  20. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I’d also like us to “Gotta have INTs” especially when they are thrown RIGHT AT YOU.

  21. BucU Says:

God bless Shaq Barrett and his family for their terrible loss. As far as football goes there’s no wY he’s going to be a factor this year. So lots of eyes on JTS and Logan Hall in training camp. Perform or you won’t be seeing a 2nd contract.
Also just wanted to get my Russell Gage is a massive bust diatribe in. The guy just burns my ass. Porcelain boy has been injured from this that and the other the millisecond he walked thru the door. He’s a bum.

  22. dmatt Says:

JTS was a bust earlier last year when he loafed n seemed confused on certain plays. He’s shown that he only has speed, no strength, no agility, n based on his blooper play against the Bengals after receiving a gift in the bread basket from Joe Burrow, I’m sold that he’s got a head of lettuce for a brain. Please, let’s roll with Calijah Kancey at DE. He’s strong, smart, has speed n agility, and is a running locomotive on every play.

  23. Lakeland Steve Says:

Those rookies better come through for us or we may be in big trouble trying to get sacks.

  24. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Oh man. Deacon Jones was totally old school football. A joy to watch him track ball carriers and punish them on the finish. Much like early warren sapp for sure.
If the Bucs are to do well defensively, their d line must dominate. Cause if they don’t, our secondary is likely to be out to lunch trying to figure out who to cover….

  25. garro Says:

If Licht had any money to work with …Maybe he could pull another rabbitt out of his hat and bring in another Shaq or JPP.

Edge rushers are alot like drafting the (mythical in our case) franchise QB. Very hit and miss with a very high bust rate.

JTS overall play was much better last year unfortunately the sacks were not. He was alot like Maxwell Smart …Missed it by that much. Hope he can get over the hump and give us a real threat from the edge along with Shaq.

If teams have to leave people to help with them our defense could really dominate.

    Go Bucs!
