“Emotion And Passion And Even Anger”
July 13th, 2023The GoLongTD.com feature on Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis last week made major national waves, but Joe was seeking more insight into how Davis delivered his message.
Now Joe has it.
The feature writer/reporter Tyler Dunne sat down on his own podcast to reflect on the story.
“There was emotion and passion and even anger in how Carlton Davis delivered what he said,” Dunne shared.
That struck Joe because Davis is a very chill dude. It struck Dunne, as well.
“I really think his rhetoric means something and has substance to it,” Dunne said. “This isn’t somebody just shooting from the hip. This isn’t somebody that really wants to be in the headlines. I didn’t really get that sense from Carlton Davis that like he is one of those cornerbacks who wants to run his mouth and make himself out to be a caricature or a cartoon.”
Dunne reminded listeners that it was “a deeper story than ripping on Tom Brady leaving, but Davis was very passionate about the Bucs not turning into a bad team just because Brady left.
(JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman believes Davis, in part, was expressing the entire defense’s frustration with the Bucs’ sad offense under Brady last season.)
Dunne added that Davis spoke of the “rude awakening” coming to teams who think the Bucs are toast because Brady left and the team is in a bit of a transition.
The Davis message isn’t resonating in Vegas, but Joe is on board. There’s no logic in thinking the Bucs offense should be worse this season than the miserable 18 points per game it tallied last year, and the defense should be at least as good and likely better.

Howie Long: “Defensive players have to play angry.”

Underestimate the team at your own risk. That’s what I love about this year. If they suck, well everyone expected it anyway. If they come in under the radar and kick ass, great for us. Probably the most intriguing year we’ve had in some time.
July 13th, 2023 at 11:26 am
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Let’s hope the Bucs come out swinging!
July 13th, 2023 at 11:31 am
This attitude from Davis, and I would assume from the rest of the team, especially Mayfield, is a part of why I am betting the over on the measly 6.5 wins line. (from Tampa – live in VA…it’s legal here)

I def think our defense will be good enough for a playoff run. The question is, will the QB orchestrate good enough for one. I like what Canales brings, both in energy and creativity. So there is that. I still think we should bring back either gholston or hicks for some depth on the line. It’s a long season, and Vea isn’t known for playing a great amount of snaps. I also think while Kancey will start out as a good pass rusher, it will take time for him to settle into the run game. Maybe also bringing in another receiver for depth, with Gage made of glass, and of course with Mikey getting up in age. Palmer is a good story, but we’ve seen this movie before, where a dude looks great in underwear football, but can’t do well once the real bullets start flying, Kenny Bell anyone. I think he will be different, but who truly knows.

CATCH THE BALL!

“JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman believes Davis, in part, was expressing the entire defense’s frustration with the Bucs’ sad offense under Brady last season.”
7-3 in the 10 games our 2022 defense held the opposing offense at or under 21 points. We lost two games where we had no business losing against GB & Pitt with a two game flip which would’ve made the team 10-7 last year, but our offense was sh*t in terms of finding the endzone.
Since 2020 our defense over 3 seasons(21.7 ppg in ’20, 20.9 ppg in ’21, 21.6 ppg in ’22) our defense allowed an average of 21.4 ppg
Paints the picture that if our offense can improve its’ point production to 23-26 ppg under Canales with Trask/Mayfield, we’ll probably be winning more games than any of these predictions give us credit for if our defense can maintain its’ points allowed average it’s hovered at and around for the last 3 seasons.
I think we’re more talented than ATL & Carolina, can be good enough to sweep both and split with the Saints. 5-1 NFCS is doable and out of division there’s at least 3 team who may be starting a rookie QB against us, a winning season is not some stretch of the imagination or outside the realm of possibility.

JUST LISTENED TO “EXPERT ANALYSIS” ON BUCS 6.5 WINS
These experts only see the loss of TB12 and last year’s rushing stats. They think the Bucs will be the worst team in the league.
New OL, new OC, faster DL/OLB … completely disregarded. Evans and Godwin get love but that’s it. 6 of 11 defensive starters are Super Bowl Champs, 2xNFCS Champions. They get 0 respect. They should be mad.
July 13th, 2023 at 2:08 pm
With a decent running game, an outside pass rush, and a low turnover rate, we will be a playoff team once again. No matter what the national media says, we are a talented football team with a good defense who has the potential to be very good. With or without Brady we are highly skilled with top level talent. We needed Brady’s attitude and work ethic to turn this around to make a us a championship contender and he did that. Something happened last year and it was too much drama. Brady was not the same, we had injuries, our coaching on offense was pathetic, but we have so much talent to not be good again. If the coaching staff can develop those things will be back in the playoffs.
July 13th, 2023 at 2:12 pm
Every single season without fail has teams who were picked to be lousy and ended up going to the playoffs or getting just short. Why not us this season?
July 13th, 2023 at 2:13 pm
Until proven otherwise I’m cautiously optimistic.
July 13th, 2023 at 2:52 pm
The key to this season could be the hiring of George Edwards. Right Joseph?
July 13th, 2023 at 3:00 pm
Davis isn’t even considered a top 10 cornerback. Last year he made Jamar Chase invisible for 60 minutes
July 13th, 2023 at 3:43 pm
Davis has pride…I get it, love it, respect it… Just not sure I agree with his assessment of the teams direction.
Bucs future is in the hands of an unproven 1st time NFL play-caller, with a reshuffled OL, questionable depth at the skilled positions and either a reclamation project or a Traskcan behind C.
There’s some “go prove it” that needs to occur on the OFF side before I can get on the “all’s well” bandwagon. Decades of disappointment has made me a bit cynical in that regard.
July 13th, 2023 at 3:44 pm
Davis is a Dawg, and at this point in his career is dialed and invested into this team’s history. Im sure most of the carryovers from last year will have a chip on their shoulder in regards to the Brady effect. Some people need an edge to compete.
July 13th, 2023 at 4:47 pm
Thanks Joe, for being a real fan and calling out the absurdity of the national narrative. This is a highly talented defense and an offense with some pieces that should really improve throughout the season. Nine or ten wins is well within reach.
July 13th, 2023 at 5:41 pm
Their knowledge of so many things, like the Bucs, is a mile wide and an inch deep. “Brady’s gone now, the Bucs will suck” and then they move on to the next team
July 13th, 2023 at 6:18 pm
What are we whining about today?
I don’t wan’t to be “off topic”
July 13th, 2023 at 7:51 pm
Davis seems to have the opposite of a big mouth. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard anything he’s said, and certainly nothing even remotely “controversial”.
I think this came straight from the heart and I don’t believe he’s the only one.
This team has a lot to prove and should have a chip on their shoulders.
Start at QB with Mayfield or Trask, both being routinely dissed!
Then add White who doesn’t seem to get a ton of respect. A new reworked OL that still suffers in the shadow of last year’s dismal performance.
A defense still smarting from last season and like the O getting routine dissed.
The Bucs are this year’s NFL version of Rodney Dangerfield.
July 13th, 2023 at 8:14 pm
Perhaps Carlton Davis is reflecting anger shared by the entire team at the sabotage of Leftnut.
July 13th, 2023 at 8:26 pm
Bottom line most people think Bucs don’t have the coaching or the talent and depth to overcome the loss of Brady. This is supported by the following observations/pervasive ideas:
Brady was Brady but not even Brady could overcome issues in playcalling, poor offensive line performance and a lack of TE and #3 receiver.
The coaching was poor an several in game decision examples are often repeated.
Also the team looked uninspired because Brady had distractions and couldn’t drive through leadership. The coaching staff didn’t make up the difference.
The rushing attack is the worst in the league and with Brady gone what little offense they muster is likely to evaporate.
Trask is unproven and Mayfield was the worst QB in the league last year.
These are legitimate points.
What the Bucs need to be a winning team IMO:
The QB needs to be top 10 level.
The offensive line needs be more physical – a lot more physical.
Running game needs to be minimum middle of the league in production
TEs and Receiver depth needs to make greater contributions
Young defensive players need to take the next step and show improvement.
Will these things happen? Can they happen? We’ll see.
July 13th, 2023 at 8:49 pm
The Bucs are going to stink until they get rid of Bowles. I feel like they’ve come to terms with that too. Todd is a DC, not a HC. Maybe a decent draft pick for a new coach next year
July 13th, 2023 at 8:50 pm
Wow. Is that optimism in these posts. Almost forgot what that looked like.
July 13th, 2023 at 9:24 pm
Bucs are going to stun everyone this year!
July 13th, 2023 at 9:31 pm
The Bucs have matured and have stepped away from their doom and gloom past. TB brought in a new culture of a winner and that magic dust he showered on the team left his mark on today’s Buccaneers.
Carlton Davis is telling the Bucs and the football world that a new world was ushered in 2020 when the Bucs handed the Chiefs a hamulating defeat.
TB laid the foundation for the Tampa Buccaneers and Carlton Davis is reminding us there is no abandoning of the pirate ship. Get ready for the NFL’s 2023 surprise Team.
July 13th, 2023 at 9:51 pm
both will be worse
Should not have discarded Suh and JPP like trash. They were the soul of the defense. The team gets what it deserves. They suck.
July 13th, 2023 at 10:01 pm
Somebody be sure to mention how “angry” and “hungry” the Bucs players are when they’re 1-8.
July 13th, 2023 at 11:44 pm
I think it’s frustration as well, but they are inside of it and cannot see the bigger picture. The bigger picture is they are weaker at many positions have more questions at many positions and less depth. It could all be solved by next year if the youth movement over the last two seasons and next year pan out. Of course the big step is drafting a QB next year. The big step on defense is having the young DL start getting consistent pressure without blitzing.
July 14th, 2023 at 12:06 am
You had Tom Brady the greatest QB in the history of football still playing at an elite level and you squandered it.
The coaching was bad.
The effort was poor.
Couldn’t get a 1st down on short yardage all year long.
After that game in Pittsburgh last season I knew. This wasn’t the team. That was a lay down job. A lack of pride.
Inexcusable.
You want to know the real reason why Tampa is getting slotted in already as a top 2 pick in the draft next year?
Everyone thinks you’re country club soft. No heart.
That’s why they say without Brady you’re nothing – because they saw what happened with their own eyes. Brady stole 4 games last year minimum. You think you’re going to plug in Baker Mayfield and this team is going to have heart all of a sudden? Win more games? What a joke.
It’s not all the players either. The head coach is no world beater and the front office makes you wonder sometimes if winning football games is the top priority.
Last season was bad. Really bad. Capped off by the blowout loss at home to the Cowgirls. It was like a gut punch. Watching that game I felt like someone insulted my mother. I turned it off 3rd quarter.
All this big talk – oh we’re serious we got Baker Mayfield now – Canales is going to be a hot name blah blah blah.
The reality is when people find out I’m a Bucs fan they offer their pity. Oh wow sorry Mostly Peaceful. What am I going to say “Oh no you watch out we got Baker now. Don’t underestimate us!”. Please. I just say yeah well we’re rebuilding. Hopefully we develop some young players this year – hope we can develop Trask and build towards 2024. Usually I get “Baker Mayfield?” and a chuckle – like lol you’re in for a rough one.
This team deserves this because that’s what they put out on the field last time we saw them. You’re going to tell us not to believe our lying eyes?
It is what it is man.
I’ve been a Bucs fan for 35 years. Last year was bitter. Sorry man you can’t put that out in the field and have people respect you. You can’t hope to stay employed long either. This is a man up year. Either you step up or this whole thing gets blown up. Everyone is on the hot seat. EVERYONE.
July 14th, 2023 at 4:19 am
I like everything Mostly peaceful said, except that he’s a Trask fan
July 14th, 2023 at 5:34 am
Agree with your assessment Joe, Defense will most likely be better than last year.
Offense should be better as well, i will take first year OC Canales over what Spongeboob did last year.
July 14th, 2023 at 7:40 am
OK I get it …He pissed…good.
Moving on.
Go Bucs!
July 14th, 2023 at 10:20 am
Well written MostlyPeaceful.

Sometimes the obvious needs to be said because everyone is in denial.
We need reality. No more smoke being blown up everyone’s backsides.
July 14th, 2023 at 4:34 pm
I love his passion. And he should be angry. That means he gives a @$#%
