A deep explanation has emerged as it relates to Buccaneers running back Rachaad White noting that the team has a massive chip-on-its-shoulder mindset entering this season.
It’s all woven into a fantastic feature story on Carlton Davis by Tyler Dunne at GoLongTD.com.
Dunne got Davis to open up about his life. It’s long, but Dunne hit a home run.
Davis touched on how the Bucs are hungry to rattle anyone who thinks Tom Brady was the whole team.
“We’re about to do it to ‘em,” Davis says. “Anybody who feels we’ve lost Tom — and lost something — is going to be in for a rude awakening. A rude awakening. Tom was a great addition for us, but obviously it’s a team sport. Obviously, you need components to be successful. We still have those components. And I’m only getting better.”
Asked what this “rude awakening” entails, Davis tilts his head down before dramatically lifting up his eyes to meet yours.
He then issues a warning to the rest of the NFL.
“We’re going to wreck shi*. Like, wreck shi*. Interceptions. Turnovers. Plays will be made. I will say. Plays. Will. Be. Made.”
Davis offered a little more on the us-against-the-haters heartbeat pulsating through the roster. But it’s all the same theme. It reminded Joe of when NFL Network, just prior to the 2020 season, ranked Bucs cornerbacks as the worst in the NFL.
Joe is all in favor of anything that will get the Bucs to play with their hair on fire on opening day against a very beatable Minnesota team. The last time the Bucs took the field, with Tom Brady as their fearless leader, they were flat as a pancake.

Carlton Davis sees the prognostications and would like to relay a message.
“You don’t know sh*t,” he says. “Nobody knows sh*t until it happens.”
Truth
“A lot of times, we would do stuff,” Davis says, “and because Tom is the greatest player to ever play the game, a lot of credit would go toward him being here. Now, it gives us a chance to be independently great. People can’t say, ‘Oh, it’s Covid.’ Or, ‘Oh, it’s because Tom was there.’ They’ve got to give us the credit. That’s something we’re fighting for.”

What was the Bucs record before he got there? 7-9? 2-6 at home?

I believe in CD, this defense, their hungry attitude to disprove doubters, the new OC, many of the players. But I don’t believe Todd Bowles is or ever will be a good head coach. And I have question marks above the QB position. But love the fire coming from CD.

With the 2023 offensive line we have I think the running game will be very good. Very little concern there for me. The O line will be so much better than last year. The biggest question/concern for me is the pass rush. Will JTS and Logan Hall start performing consistently? Will Shaq be a factor at all after his ACL injury? Highly unlikely to me.
Same thing on run defense. If there’s not major improvement there then we’re doomed.
Overall I’m cautiously optimistic.

Did the front office tell this guy to start selling tickets? Sorry even if I lived down there I wouldn’t buy them. Not this early. Talk is cheap but I want to see what this team is really made of and not against other garbage teams. I don’t think they have the players to back all this talk up.

Looks to me like the Bucs’ defense has 8 very solid starters: Vea, Gaines, LVD, White, Davis, Dean, Winfield, Neal. We also have Shaq & Nelson who are both solid performers (when healthy of course). Then we have a bunch of youngsters who need to show what they’re made out of this year: JTS, Hall, Kancey, Diaby, Dennis, McCollum, Delaney.
Assuming that the Bucs keep 25 on defense, there’d also be another 8 players to get us up to that number. Never know who’s gonna shine. Personally I think we’re about 1 draft away from being a great defense (say Top-5), but we should b able to make it into the Top-15 again this year, and even possibly back into the Top-10 IF several of our youngsters come through for us.

Not worried about the defense. Now the offense, namely the running game gives me pause. Our defense was put in so many bad positions last year, by a combo of bad play calling, an old QB,a shaky o-line, along with injuries to our receivers. I really do think Canales will make a difference, the question is, how much?

July talk from players is so boring. Like I said, EVERY team is positive and have a chip on their shoulder. The Chiefs are the defending SB champions and they’re walking around feeling slighted. The analysts that are rating this team to be at the bottom of the league are stupid. We’re honestly about a middle of the road team right now. I hate to make early proclamations. Injuries happen. You never know what anyone’s opening day roster might look like on paper. The most important positions on the field are the OL and QB, and we have questions on both. People are also down on the coach. That’s the reason for the low rankings so far.
I understand players wanting to prove something without Brady, but I think it’s stupid. We hadn’t made the playoffs on over decade before he arrived. The goal would be to win the SB without him, not just finish better than last season. The playoffs are a realistic expectation for this team, but that really wouldn’t be proving anyone wrong. By Davis’ expectations, it’s SB or bust.

I believe CD, however, it’s the rest if the defense that leaves alot to be desired. Where will the pass rush come from? Will Devon White play consistently and can they stay healthy?

The reality is our division is so weak right now that winning the NFC is very realistic…I literally celebrated when the Panthers drafted Bryce Young and the “Aints” signed Derek Carr…As much as I don’t like Mayfield, I’d still pick him over Carr, Young, and Ridder…

ALL NFL players have major pride and belief in themselves or they’re not successful. That first year with Brady everybody was so happy to win the SB that the lovefest covered any envy or distractions.
Year 2 that seemed to start showing up…players not as hungry…perhaps not as in awe of Brady…whatever the dropoff was noticeable.
Year 3 a disaster. Losing not one but 2 of the 3 Pro Bowl players in Marpet and then the real dagger to the heart Ryan Jensen. Imagine any team going from 3 Pro Bowlers to just one! Add in the loss of Cappa…60% OF THE STARTING OL GONE!!! Before the first snap of the season.
Then you add in Brady’s year too long retirment tour…his family dissolution, missing the preseason…and never really showing his old swagger…it was time for a change.
The one positive is that those three missing starters gave a lot of young guys some snaps. This year’s OL has real potential, especially if Jensen returns and Mauch is the real deal along side of him. Two mean nasty read heads in the middle…think they’re both highly MOTIVATED? And the addition of Feiler has the feel of a Logan Mankins move. No Feiler isn’t going to be as good as Mankins but he’s not that far off and he’s huge. 6-6 330, mature 30 year old with lots of starting experience on two different teams next to 6-5 320 lb Tristan Wirfs. I know everybody here hates “potential” and “on paper” but it’s hard to look at this year’s line compared to the opening day line last year and not see major improvement! And thanks to the disaster last year a lot of young guys got snaps and the Bucs actually have some depth.

This GO LONG article was really terrific! I wish JBF would try to do some more player interviews. I got a very different mindset about CD after reading this intensive interview. It got me all fired up. I hope he really is doing the same for the team.

Truth is, Tom helped us get over the top. We were an excellent offense in 2019, but Jameis turned the ball over too much. Tom HELPED us win the Super Bowl (though he tried to give away the NFC Championship Game in the second half) but the truth is, we could’ve won that Super Bowl with 10 other QBs. That team was stacked. The D will be better than last years and might be better than the 2020 version. The offense, through addition by subtraction, will be better as well.

He can’t catch a cold and is getting paid like a top shelf corner
That D might get some sacks and TO’s but will give up 150 a game average on the ground – ruining all the TO’s as we just get seal clubbed in the 4th quarter week after week

That’s awesome. I hope 99% of last year’s players still on the team think that way. They should be po’d that they’re perceived as crap because one player (albeit the GOAT) is not on the team. Let the chips on their shoulders shine, baby. GO BUCS!

You can’t teach speed. You can’t catch speed. The Bucs are fast at every level. Kancey, JTS, White, CDIII, Neal.
Remember 2002, opponents said they practiced for speed but “you can’t simulate Bucs’ speed.” We’re back to 2002 … but faster. Kancey, fastest ever, faster.
CDIII has a Super Bowl and 2xNFCS Championships. Dude knows great cause he’s seen great. When he says the Bucs’ D is about to wreak sh*t, PAY ATTENTION!

Defense could be really good !
But if I hear one more Bucs def back or linebacker blame communication on a blown play I’m gonna puke.
We’re not young on the back end anymore,
CD, Dean, Winfield , Lavonte etc we got some veterans with many game reps, I just don’t want to hear that excuse anymore
Also if they don’t tackle better it will be very disappointing
But I’m bullish on Bucs D baby !

It seems like Davis is found writhing in pain on the field after many plays. I think he needs to learn how not to get his S- – – wrecked so often.
