A Window Into Kyle Trask’s Development?

With Buccaneers assistant coach Tom Moore getting honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame last week, it reminded Joe of 84-year-old Moore’s famous off-color quote that appeared in a book authored by Ron “Jaws” Jaworski.
Jaws and Bucs Super Bowl-winning head coach Jon Gruden, aka Chucky, used to be the big-gun analysts on Monday Night Football.
Per Jaws, he and Chucky visited a Colts practice when quarterback guru Moore was the playcaller for Peyton Manning and the lethal Indianapolis offense. They asked Moore why backup quarterbacks weren’t getting snaps, and Moore gave his famous reply: “Fellas, if ’18’ goes down, we’re fuc*ed. And we don’t practice fuc*ed.”
It was a fun line from Moore, who is not one to ramble for the cameras or seek the spotlight.
Fast-forward to the Tom Brady era in Tampa, and Joe has to wonder how Moore felt about developing Kyle Trask, who was a Bucs second-round pick in 2021. Remember, Bucco Bruce Arians Arians often said Moore was his trusted mentor.
Joe never heard of Moore attacking the job of developing Trask and Arians didn’t have the time. Former playcaller Byron Leftwich was too busy with detail-obsessed Brady and trying to enchance a historic offense.
Clyde Christensen was Trask’s quarterbacks coach. Improving Trask definitely was in his job description, and he did such a fantastic job the Bucs didn’t try to keep Christensen when he left after last season (sarcasm).
That Moore take really made Joe think harder about whether Trask got everything his coaches had when it came to his development.
One could say Trask developed so well that now he’s ready for a starting job. Or one could say the Bucs signed Baker Mayfield to a last-chance contract because Trask came along so slowly they don’t trust handing him the ball to start his third NFL season.

It’s kind of like keeping Ryan Griffin on the roster for all those years. If you have no intention of ever playing them, why keep them? You go with your #1 and then pick up a veteran with experience as your backup. When #1 is gone (e.g., Brady retires), draft or sign your next #1. So, to me it’s looking more and more like, the Bucs believe/hope that Mayfield will be the next #1 and Trask has little hope of taking the field.

There’s a million worse jobs out there than holding a clipboard being a backup NFL QB. Seriously though, is there a better job? He will get paid millions for just staying in shape. He almost never has to get hit and he can get rich never seeing the field. This is big get over it already for me and the so what is, keep cashing the check and ride it until it dies.

One could also say the Bucs didn’t see a reason for anointing Kyle Trask the starting QB before the new league year, and that bringing in somebody who can compete with Trask so either has to EARN the position is the best course of action. Pretty certain a “Kyle Trask is our starter” announcement in February would have sabotage the already thin QB FA pool if guys see themselves as starting QBs that announcement makes your team a less desirable location for FA prospects.

Trask has been dealt a bad hand. Clyde only cared about Brady and drinking/golfing with BA and Gabbert. If he pans out it’s a testament to Trask and his ability to apply what he observed of Brady.

As I’ve said and will always believe, Clyde is truly the luckiest man in the NFL. He’s never really developed anyone and has been the benefactor of proximity to great coaches and great QBs. The only difference between him and Lefty is that Clyde knew his limitations (college QB coach level skillset) and turned down every opportunity he could to remain in the shadow of greatness. Clyde and Armstrong are great examples of how good ol boy apathy can quietly undermine the potential of talented teams

Trask is going to get his shot one way or another. Does anyone really believe baker will be able to stay on the field all season. He’s already a small dude, and he takes a lot of unnecessary hits. Trask just better be ready when that time come.

If that were true the Bucs, going into the draft with Task the only quarterback on the roster, would not have passed on both Will Levis and Hendon Hooker in the first round, passed on Hendon Hooker again in the second round, and not draft any quarterback in any round.
And, it’s Trask’s de facto first season, not “third NFL season”. That’s Joe’s way of trying to make Trask sound as bad as he can.

I’m really glad the Bucs kept Tom Moore and gave him a raise.
Dude is like 85 and outworks almost everyone in the building.
His vast experience in this league over many decades is so valuable to the rest of our offensive staff.
I’m sure he will be a HUGE help to Canales this year.

That was the most circular and pointless thing I have read in a while.
Trask got the short end of the stick because Brady didn’t retire when the Bucs though he would.
Trask was an insurance policy that wasn’t needed and got lost until Brady did retire.
Now is the time to find out what he is, see if the Bucs future is in the building or.
Its Baker’s time to be relegated to being the insurance policy, because he is only here for the year.

The kid was basically red-shirted his first two years. At this point it’s like looking at starting a rookie quarterback. (I do believe they spent a lot of time working on his throwing mechanics, so there’s that)

You simply can’t start Trask with Mayfield available……thinking Todd Bowles…..if he starts Mayfield and Mayfield fails…..that’s somewhat on Licht……if he starts Trask and he has to go to Mafield, Bowles looks like a fool.
Hand the key to Mayfield…..if he falters give them to Trask…..by that time it will probably too late to make much of a difference.

Maybe the idea of “developing” a QB is overblown. Coaches will work with you if are already developed coming out of college and have most of the attributes that cannot be coached. Still, if Kyle Trask has a decent NFL career, you can bet that Arians, Moore, Christensen, Leftwich, etc. will take full credit. How many people have taken credit for Brady’s success? He made a lot of people look like geniuses.

It seems Baker Mayfield is the better fit for the offense being installed.
Trask was drafted during the BA no risk it no biscuit days when a more traditional pocket passer was the order of the day.
This new offense will be the complete opposite… Sure there will be plays that calls for Mayfield to throw from the pocket but with his tendency for batted down passes at the line the Bucs will be calling more play action bootlegs and roll out type passes where the QB will be on the move more often.
I like Trask. I appreciate what he accomplished in the SEC and I liked the pick at the time. But I just don’t see Trask thriving in this new offense.

Imo. Trask didn’t get developed the way he should have or he just comes along real slow, which might have forced his coaches to limit his development due to limited time available. Seems to me if you’re paying him then you should develope him!! He may someday thrive in the NFL!! It might not be until next season or even later. If the Bucs offer him a second contract or by some miracle he wins the starter job we’ll know for sure that they see something positive in him.

I have no doubt Kyle will get a chance ,(somewhere, sometime), and become an outstanding starting quarterback and that’s where my nightmares begin,( a la Brett Farve being traded by Atlanta to Green Bay after Atlanta never “ developed “ Farve. In my nightmare I see the Bucs starting Mayfield and continue to let him start until the season is ruined, then they put Kyle in and he sets the world on fire, but too late to save the season and he wins enough to get other teams very interested (and offers him big bucks that Tampa cannot match ) but does not lose enough for Tampa to draft a top tier quarterback ,which Tampa will need because as Kyle gets those big money offers from other teams and he thinks back on how he was treated here in Tampa , what do you think he’s going to do? What would you do? Oh well ,You could still resign Mayfield, he will probably still has his swagger.

Sorry Marine Buc, but I’m gonna put you on the spot. WHY is Baker Mayfield a better fit for Canales’ offense? We all know what Canales has SAID. None of us has a clue what he will actually DO once the bright lights come on Sept 10th in Minnesota. We THINK he’s gonna run more (or at least WANTS TO), but he (and Bowles) have already said they want to do what works best. You never know what that will be.
WHAT IF our OLine turns out to be exceptional at pass blocking this year but sucks at run blocking? A 6’5″ pocket-passer like Trask MAY do a lot better in that scenario than a 6’1″ QB who has no need to scramble in that case because the pocket is being protected well enough to let the intermediate & deep routes develop. You can’t teach height.
And as far as being hard to bring down goes, Trask (6’5″ & 236 lbs) is almost the same size as a couple of QBs who were notorious for being hard to bring down … Ben Roethlisberger (6’5″ & 240 lbs) and Josh Allen (6’5″ & 237 lbs). You also can’t teach size.
I admit that at this point I have NO IDEA which QB will fit best with our new offense. Personally I don’t think that Bowles or Canales do either. I’m perfectly willing to wait until the preseason starts, the pads come on, and we get 2-3 preseason games under our belt to see which one does the best.
I freely admit also that I’d prefer to have Trask win a FAIR COMPETITION for the starter’s nod, but I wouldn’t be the slightest bit disappointed if Mayfield gets selected to start. I admit I’d have a lot of trepidation after seeing how he performed in Carolina to start last season (1-5) but I can deal with that … providing that he wins as a Buc of course.

But here is what could be a great conundrum for the Bucs. What if the Bucs have a San Francisco situation?
Trey Lance the Niner savior went down early. Then Jimmy Garropollo a seasoned vet came in and played well until he too went down and then it was up to Mr Irrelevant Brock Purdy to come in as a rookie and play great.
Bucs fans are so beaten down at the QB spot we have no hope. As Andy Dufresne said in Shawshank…”Hope is a good thing…maybe even the best of things…and good things never die.” Andy may have gone to the prison of Shawshank but he never met the “Chicken Littles” who root for the Bucs!
So thing big grasshoppers. If SF can get lucky with THREE QB’s the Bucs can get luck with TWO. So what happens if BOTH these guys deserve to play?

It is so simple. Trask still a rookie with Tom B. not retiring when he should have. Bucs never even tried to develop Trask with Tom B. around. Instead they cater to two old qb’s and forgot why they drafted a future qb in the second round with Tom b. on the roster. This is a total disaster by a club that has no history with developing qb rookies.

Now the piper gets paid. Kinda painful, no, with a virtual rook underachiever or potential failed has-been at the most important position on the field?
It could get worse. This team could be mediocre and get stuck in both draft and cap hell.

To all my bucs fans on this site it’s time to just accept that our beloved bucs just can’t develop a quarterback. They bring in the wrong coaches by bringing in a coach that has a name to sale us. All this next year drafting a quarterback don’t mean nothing. Tell me this what makes you guys believe that they would developed the quarterback they draft next year?? Think about this we have a guy that threw for the most yards and touchdowns and had a higher completion rate than any quarterback in college in 2020 plus played against the SEC which is the best conference in college football. Then he came to Tampa with no pressure or being thrown into the fire for 2 years while sitting behind a hall of fame quarterback and they still couldn’t develop him. And some of guys want to draft a quarterback next year who will be thrown into the fire and is now playing in a league where training camp is not what it used to be because coaches don’t have as much time with the players like they used to and you guys really believe they will draft a quarterback and develop him?? It’s time to just get back to bucs ball build a defense and get a good running game and plug in a veteran that’s average or slightly above average and we can win a Superbowl that way.

“Developing a quarterback.” That’s a very much used, yet primarily unrealistic term. Either a quarterback has it or he doesn’t. Did Josh McDaniels develop Tebow? Did Sean Payton develop Jameis and Tausom hill? Has McCarthy been able to develop Prescott? No to all!!
All a qb coach or coordinator can do is create a game plan and plays that gets the most out of a qb. For example Geno Smith playing in Pete Carrols offense or how horribly Russell Wilson played without Pete Carrolls offense.
Players develop themselves during the offseason.
Dooley! You made a great point. The only reason for this QB competition charade was to trick Mayfield into signing thinking he had an opportunity to start. NOT!!!! The mighty Kyle Trask will be our opening day starter. What coach in their right mind would start Mayfield to save their coaching job??

We haven’t even had the first practice of training camp and some of you guys want to give up on this season already. Let them play it out and we will see if this is another lost year or a treat soon enough. I’m excited and curious because the range of possibilities is so great. I’m hoping for surprising excellence, but I also would not be shocked if we’re one of the worst teams in the league. I’m stuck either way because my sports fandom is based on a strict policy of homerism. This is the town where I live and work so it’s the Bucs, Rays and Lightning for me.

So…if/when Baker Mayfield goes down and the Bucs have no choice but to play Trask the rest of the season…maybe we’ll see something good.

ATLbuc. That’s not true bro Drew Brees was a second round pick with the Chargers and they drafted Rivers and Brees became a hall of famer because of Sean Payton he developed Brees . Billachick developed Brady coaching matters bro. Patrick Mahomes went to Andy Reid. Every quarterback Andy Reid touch he developed them or made a quarterback like Alex Smith who consider a bust and made him a probowl quarterback. I would definitely love a peek behind the curtain regarding Trasks development or lack thereof. Clyde Christensen was highly respected in the NFL. We were told he retired rather than be fired. Would love to know what exactly was going on at one Buc. Alas, all we the fans ever get is speculation and conspiracy theories.

Canales’ approach of having both qbs sharing the time in training camp makes it fair for Trask to show us if he is able to earn the qb1 position.

Hey ButtCrack. Mayfield is Bucs all time third best QB? His body of work to this point simply defies that statement. Right off the bat, Deberg and Garcia were better, and I am sure I could come up with more. I would place him perhaps in a tie with Winston. Mayfield will have to perform much better for that to change.

It’s true we really don’t know what this new offense will look like once it is fully installed and we start playing preseason games.
I would be fine with Trask winning the starting QB job – one thing I noticed about watching Mayfield’s game film (especially in Carolina) is the high number of passes that get blocked at the LOS. Trask’s size would certainly help avoid some of those failed plays.
I still believe Mayfield will win the job over Trask but I also want to see a fair competition between the two.

This is an interesting take as I have heard nothing but good things about Clyde from multiple sources. Not that what you are saying is not true. Who is “Armstrong” that you are referring to?
I like what you said about the “Good ol’ boy” network undermining teams. This “good ol boy” line of thinking leads to a bunch of misnomers like leaders need to be fiery yellers, qbs have to be 8′ tall to be successful, you don’t develop backups, etc… On top of people just not be qualified OR as good as another coach that doesn’t get the same opportunities.
It honestly makes me wonder how many potential HOF players wash out of the NFL because of this stupidity.
