Door Opened On Bucs’ New Offense (But Just A Crack)

July 1st, 2023

Bucs OC Dave Canales.

The number of folks who truly know what the Bucs offense will look like this year under new offensive coordinator Dave Canales is small.

Offensive players, assistant coaches, AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, coach Todd Bowles and Canales himself.

No, Joe isn’t certain Bucs defensive players fully have a handle on this new offense. You don’t believe Canales emptied his playbook in underwear football, do you?

Recently, Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield spoke with the Fourth Estate to pimp a golf outing that Joe couldn’t give two farts about. Belle Fraser of the New York Post documented Mayfield’s response when asked what can NFL fans expect to see from Canales and the offense.

Mayfield didn’t go into great detail but pointed to a Super Bowl-winning coach’s offense.

“To be around a coach like Sean McVay and a bunch of other guys… to be around those guys and to be in that offense and now looking forward to being in Tampa because it’s a very similar system with our new offensive coordinator [David Canales],” Mayfield said.

This isn’t a surprise if you look at Canales’ recent coaching lineage. The past two years he was the passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach with Seattle working alongside Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who was an offensive assistant on McVay’s Rams staff for four seasons.

So clearly Waldron was heavily influenced by McVay and it seems that influence has rubbed off on Canales. This also explains why the Bucs think they made a savvy gamble on Mayfield. The only success Mayfield has had the past two NFL seasons was in a handful of games playing for McVay in Los Angeles.

So if Mayfield showed signs of life in McVay’s offense, why not give him a spin in a similar offense surrounded by better weapons? This is why Joe thinks Mayfield could be sneaky good this year.

And if it falls apart for Mayfield and the Bucs, no harm, no foul. Quarterbacks Drake Maye, brittle Michael Penix, Quinn Ewers and J.J. McCarthy could be had next spring.

Kwon Alexander is a free agent.

He would cost half as much as Devin White.

He played great for the Jets last year.

He wants 4-5 million per year.

    Trade Devin White.

    Bring Kwon back to Tampa.

    Go Bucs!

  2. Joker's Paradigm Says:

My rose colored glasses have a feeling that Canales and Mayfield are going to prove the critics wrong. I get this positive vibe everytime I see/hear Canales speak. There is something special about this guy. I think it was a good hire and will return dividends. And with his style of offense, I think Mayfield is going to be a solid (not top tier) QB this season.

  3. HC Grover Says:

McVay? What so great about his offense?

  4. Da Bucs Guy Says:

How can you say no harm, no foul, when the head coach is likely to be fired?

  5. SufferingSince76 Says:

As long as it’s not Caleb Williams. USC quarterbacks are about as successful in the NFL as University of Florida quarterbacks. Not at all.

  6. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

HC league’s worst last year with Bake at the helm. I’m just not optimistic.

  7. Onetrickpony Says:

    You got that right Suffering.
    Please, no Caleb.

  8. shankasorous Says:

SufferingSince76 Says: “about as successful in the NFL as University of Florida quarterbacks. Not at all.”

Looking at the history of how quarterbacks from a certain college do in the NFL is sheer stupidity.

First, college teams and their offenses change drastically every couple years, if you haven’t noticed.

Second, Rex Grossman from UF is one of the 10-of-69 quarterbacks drafted in the first round since 2000 who played in a Super Bowl.

Third, by your logic, the following quarterbacks should never have been drafted and certainly not been given a chance to play in the NFL:

    Josh Allen (Wyoming)

    Brett Favre (Southern Mississippi)

    Ben Roethlisberger (Miami of Ohio)

    Phil Simms (Moorehead State)

    Terry Bradshaw (Louisiana Tech)

    Kurt Warner (Northern Iowa)

    Joe Flacco (Delaware)

    Tony Romo (Eastern Illinois)

    Daunte Culpepper (Central Florida)

There’s more. That though should be enough to help you understand why nobody in the NFL pays you for your opinion.

  9. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Kwon? No. Jets would only consider him for vet minimum. He has limited value now that he comes off the field on pass coverage.

  10. Cover deuce Says:

Idk why you guys keep insisting we don’t have a pretty decent idea what this offense looks like when there’s actual tape from Seattle last year. Not to mention the broad contours of this scheme have basically been around since Mike Shanahan was roaming NFL sidelines. It really does all hinge around that outside zone run call. I’m betting it probably pretty closely resembles 2022 Seattle and the Goff-era McVeigh schemes. That is to say, not overly complex given talent limitations at QB. Certainly not as demanding as BA’s option route driven passing concepts. The real question is what they’re going to do to counter the savvy DCs who copy the Belichick formula which has become the standard blueprint to stifle it.

  11. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

DAVE CANALES IS AN AWESOME PERSON FROM WHAT I’VE SEEN &VERY POSITIVE & DETERMINED, HIS MIND IS CONSTANTLY WORKING & ALL THIS ” POSITIVE ENERGY ” IS GOING TO BE SEEN ON THE FIELD THIS YEAR..I’M ALMOST 63 YRS OLD & HE MAKES “ME” WANT TO PLAY FOR HIM !..WE WILL SEE THROUGH TRAINING CAMP, PRE-SEASON GAMES MAYBE HALF OF WHAT WE ( THE BUC’S OFFENSE ) IS CAPABLE OF ( IF WE’RE ALLOWED TO SEE THAT MUCH ) DAVE IS KEEPING THINGS PRETTY CLOSE TO THE VEST (I FEEL ) FOR VERY GOOD REASONS..THE SO-CALLED EXPERTS THINK THIS TEAM IS GOING TO TANK OR HALF-TANK ( DO THEY NOT ) THEY DON’T GIVE US A SNOWBALLS CHANCE IN HELL OF MAKING THE PLAYOFFS…WELL, THEY ARE SO MISTAKEN ( IT’S LAUGHABLE ) THERE IS DEFINITELY GOING TO BE LIFE POST TOM BRADY !..BAKER MAYFIELD IS HEALTHY, HE WAS A #1 OVERALL PICK FOR A REASON & THIS IS GOING TO BE THE RIGHT TIME,WITH THE RIGHT TEAM & OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR TO PLACE HIM BACK AMONG THE BEST QUARTERBACK’S IN THE LEAGUE ( WHERE HE BELONGS) IN THE WORDS OF THE LATE GREAT MUHAMMAD ALI, THIS TEAM IS GOING TO “SHOCK THE WORLD” ! ! !

  12. CrackWise Says:

AH yes, just a CRACK. Wait what???

  13. Buc4evr Says:

All nice talk and big plans until you get hit in the mouth. Think the defense will improve, not at all sold on the offense. Let’s see how the O does under pressure with Baker’s happy feet? Also, I don’t see how the Bucs are going to score 30 points a game with primarily a running game with play action?

  14. Dooley Says:

I’m just going to stick to thinking it’ll be a more balanced attack in comparison to what we did under Arians & Koetter. I’m expecting actual dedication to the run game, 12 & 13 personnel maybe even some shifts to take advantage of Kiefts’ hypethetical potential as an HB or get him moving around the formation as an extra blocker. All 3 of Seattles TEs last season graded out in the top 25 in PFFs individual ranking and combined for +100 catches, >1000 yards and 9 scores. We didn’t go get Payne Durham for nothing apparently.

  15. Sly Pirate Says:

SufferingSince76 … You mean Lincoln Riley QBs. Hurts, Murray, Mayfield. All three are NFL starters. Caleb is easily the most talented. Solid leader, too. The Bucs won’t get him but he’s a stud.

  16. Infomeplease Says:

Canales comes from a system that works! He is so positive and uplifting that this energy will transcend to the players! Something that left this team when BA retired!!! This will be a better team then what was fielded last season!! I can’t wait till September!

  17. CrackWise Says:

    @Dooley

Excellent post buddy. I really appreciate the mental visual of how the O will look. Still not gonna concede to the Baker hype until the season starts. Not that you proposed a QB.

Also, Payne Durham has me dreaming of BIG TIME production from our TEs for the foreseeable future.

Assuming we run the type of O that you just described. Its hard to imagine ME13 not getting at least one or two shots down the field a game and of course in the Red Zone.

For real, love the post. I can 100% see Kyle running an offense like that and taking us on a few Super Bowl runs. In my head, it just feels like an O designed for the skill set of Trask.

Baker, like Gabert, is a great veteran BACK UP…. LOL, until the decision is made or everyone gets off of Bakers “Balls” I have to keep saying it. Winston > Baker….. Check your Sheet!!!

  18. Dewey Selmon Says:

Info, I hope you are right about the infectious upbeat attitude rubbing off. TB the sideline statue needs some of that also. Anyone remember Lovie telling Russell Sheppard to pipe down pre game vs the Saints. 6-6 and in contention for a playoff spot.

  19. Joe Says:

I really appreciate the mental visual of how the O will look. Still not gonna concede to the Baker hype

Baker hype??? Who is hyping him?

  20. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

So sensitive are you gaytor bois

  21. CrackWise Says:

    @Jeff’s grandpa

Say Wiston is greater than baker makes us Gator fans? Speaking of sensitive people.

Try again old man, we are BUCS fans!!!

  22. CrackWise Says:

    @Joe

Please explain how everyone and their grandpa projecting Baker as the starter is not Baker Hype… Maybe JBF gets a pass, just because every other article is a Baker article doesn’t mean the Joe’s are hyping him.

You’s guys are just doing all of us diehards a solid and bringing us fresh stuff to read every day… AND MOST IMPORTANT, are letting us chat with one another in good fun.

I mean, how lame is a sports site that doesn’t let fan talk smack back in forth. Thats like one of the main reasons we all are fans in the first place.

  23. buccee Says:

    “Who is hyping him?”

    Joe, Joe, Ira, et al.

  24. buccee Says:

    @CrackWise

You need to understand: UF fans are always Gator fans; FSU fans are never Seminole fans.

  25. CrackWise Says:

BTW, how fitting is the name, Payne “Durham”… Perhaps a strange sign of things to come???

I can think of many things that “Durham” will be bringing the Payne on in the years to come!!!

Just Saying, CHEEK YO SHEET Merica!!!

  26. CrackWise Says:

    @buccee

    Ummmm, ok. LOL

I remember when I was trying my best to support JW (until he was sent packing) everyone would call those of us like me. FSU fan boys.

So I get your point, I think. HA!

Only reason I mention JW now is because his numbers are WAY better than Bakers, even though Baker had a WAY better team and coaches over the same period of time.

Oh but wait, Baker took a sorry team to the playoff. Even if though thats just not true AND Baker was the SOLE reason they…. Wait for it……..

    LOST IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!

But yeah I get it, Trask isn’t as good as Baker. MMMMMMkay!!!

  27. CrackWise Says:

POP QUIZ, what Buccaneer ALL TIME GREAT came from PURDUE?

  28. SufferingSince76 Says:

Skank, you sure drew a lot from my short, but evidence based statement that USC quarterbacks have no track record of succeeding in the NFL. Rex Grossman was a serviceable QB for a Super Bowl team built on defense. I never said anything about any other QB from any other school. Learn to read and comprehend, Moron. You, too, not so Sly.

  29. ChiBuc Says:

If that quiz doesn’t bust the bell curve, then this is not a buccaneer fan site

  30. SufferingSince76 Says:

    Crack, Alstott.

  31. Joe Says:

Please explain how everyone and their grandpa projecting Baker as the starter is not Baker Hype

“Hype” is slang for “promotion.” Or, building something from nothing. At least in Joe’s vernacular.

There is a reason why folks are “projecting” Mayfield as the starter the same as folks are “projecting” Ryan Jensen to be a starter or Devin White. Sure, there are potential obstacles for all three. It’s a pretty safe bet all three will start.

  32. CrackWise Says:

So, you answered your own question.

Thats the who and you added the WHY for the Baker Hype.

I stand by my statement, “Still not gonna concede to the Baker hype…”

Thanks for Playing TROLL….. LMAO, I kid I kid, I LOVE JBF and all the hard work you bro’s put in!!! 100%

  33. Joe Says:

“Still not gonna concede to the Baker hype…”

Apparently, you and Joe have far different definitions of “hype.” Someone claiming Rachaad White will run for 1,000 yards is hype since he’s done nothing to suggest he can come close to that. Or, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka getting 10 sacks this year.

Barring Kyle Trask totally blowing up to the point Todd Bowles cannot take him off the field, Mayfield’s starting. Joe isn’t basing that off of “hype.” Joe’s basing that off of watching every open practice (but one) of Trask for three years and seeing Mayfield work with the first team.

If Trask was practicing better than Mayfield and getting the most reps with the first team, Joe would have written that.

(Joe’s “hyping” Mayfield and written countless times about drafting a quarterback next spring. Yeah, some “hype.”)

If you don’t want to “concede” that, cool. We all have dreams.

  34. CrackWise Says:

Practice…… We are talking about PRACTICE……. NOT GAMES….. NOT GAMES….. LOL

I concede, “Hype” is slang for “promotion.”

Going forward, I will do my best to see the difference.

Gerrr, you win cause you are the man(s) and we all appreciate you(s) and what you(s) provide to us on a daily. If you don’t appreciate JBF you’re not a true Bucs Fan and that is 100% fact!!!

Now, just to be clear, all I am doing is Promoting Trask over Baker based on what most do when projecting a collage prospect over a FAILED NFL QB. Such as Winston………. (and Baker?)

IMHO, Baker deserves no special Promoting UNLESS Winston gets at least an honorable mention. You know, like, “Tampa has decided to go with a JW 2.0 reboot. Even though Baker is not as good as JW, throws more Pics, Far Less Yards and takes more sacks. All while being injured more and having a far better team and coaching staff. Not to mention being bounced from more teams than JW. All due to the fact Baker is an insufferable teammate on many levels, sorta like but not really the same as JW.” LOL.

I mean come on, we would all, at least I would accept that analysis whole heartedly. CAUSE ITS THE TRUTH. And I would think to my self. You know what, maybe Baker is better then this Trask guy who couldn’t beat out Braddy for a starting job. Maybe Trask does suck in practice cause, you know, everyone looks good in practice and does great on Sundays.

    THINK ABOUT IT Joe.
Trask is, well, as a Collage prospect who deserves Promoting because, well, his numbers coming out of college are better than all or most of EVERY QB THAT HAS COME OUT recently and most likely any that will come out in the near future.

That said, why draft a QB next year IF YOU’RE NEVER GOING TO PLAY HIM? And that will be the truth if they draft a QB next year.

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“Brittle” Michel Penix…I sure hope we don’t draft him….Joe will always call him that.

  36. CrackWise Says:

    @SufferingSince76

    DING DING DING

I heart you and feel your suffering FRIEND!!!

Got a GREAT FEELING about this Durham kid in this offense THANKS TO @Dooley post above.

If our O turns out to be anything like that. I might just become a Baker fan because he will be a BIG-TIME capable back up and most certainly a fan favorite at the PRACTICES for his MOXIE (with the kids watching!)

  37. n/a Says:

Comparison of injured Baker in 2021 Cleveland vs replacement Deshaun in 2022:
    2021 Baker Cmp% 60.5, TD 17, Int 13
    2022 Deshaun Cmp% 58.2, TD 7, Int 5
IMHO, Results have more to do with the coaches than with QB talent

  38. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey buccee, I could care less.

    GO!!!!!DAWGS!!!!!

Play whichever QB has the best showing in Training Camp Pre-season games. If it has been a good competition, we all will benefit, from the play of our new OC and his Offense.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  39. stpetebucfan Says:

For the Trask fanboys here. College IS NOT THE NFL!!! Trask has accomplished nothing in the NFL! That’s not to say he will never…it IS to say Mayfield currently has NFL scoreboard on Trask BIGTIME.

If Trask is as talented as the Gator fans believe then he’ll be the starter. It’s as simple as that. Why all this gripping?

  40. Beej Says:

2 out of 3 first round QBs who kick arse in college poof after 2-3 NFL seasons. There are a LOT more Josh Rosens than Josh Allens

  41. twenty- twenty Says:

I couldn’t care less if you could care less. If you can care less, then you have room to ” care less”. That being said, the QB that gives the BUCS the best chance of winning will be the one under center on Sundays

  42. Mark A Swygert Says:

I have to assume that it’s Bowles call who starts since he has the most at stake. NFL head coaching gigs are among the most desirable jobs in sports. Todd Bowles is gonna start the guy he thinks has the best chance of winning enough games to allow him to keep his job. Their college resumes are irrelevant. I am a UF alum, but I’m not sold on Trask as a viable NFL starter yet. Baker has something to prove too. Even NFL resumes (and at least Mayfield has one) are only relevant in context. I think injuries and the idiot move to “play through them” have a lot to do with Mayfield’s inconsistency. Hopefully, the Bucs pick the right guy, and I hope that it matters this year.

  43. stpetebucfan Says:

    Mark

Thanks! At last a voice of reason! We can let this all play out and see who gets the starting nod.

The irony is that it’s possible that BOTH Mayfield and Trask are competent NFL QB’s on the right team. Remember SF last year…3 different QB’s and they didn’t miss a beat.

  44. BillyBucco Says:

Please for the love of God use, I COULDN’T care less.
I could care less means you care.
And @Crack put down the pipe.
You sound high when you post.
We “couldn’t” care less about JW.

  45. garro Says:

Wish the A-Train could suit up for us this season!
    That would be awsome!

    Go Bucs!

  46. steele Says:

What’s the mystery? Rah Rah Canales is who he is, and he is a devout follower of exactly what he’s been a part of for years: Seahawks, Carroll, McVay. Seahawks glory era (smashmouth Lynch, ZBS, Russ Wilson, etc). He might add personal twists, but you can pretty much predict what it will be about. The main issue is whether a guy who’s never called plays, or even done so as a co-coordinator, will do so effectively on this pro level. Seahawks wished him well but shrugged off his exit as no big deal.

  47. lambchop Says:

    @SufferingSince76,

You ever heard of Carson Palmer? He was actually good in the right system. But, my biggest issue with Caleb is his mechanics. He is more Patrick Mahomes than Brady, but not everyone can replicate Mahomes’s ability. That makes Caleb a huge gamble.

  48. Dooley Says:

“Rah Rah Canales is who he is, and he is a devout follower of exactly what he’s been a part of for years: Seahawks, Carroll, McVay. Seahawks glory era (smashmouth Lynch, ZBS, Russ Wilson, etc).”

Served under Darrell Bevell and Brian Schottenheimer too, it’s a little bit more than just McVay
