“Kyle Trask Stinks”

This got Joe to put down the Bromosa and hit rewind because it came from a former Bucs quarterback, a respected voice who does not miss Bucs games and spent years coaching the QB position in college.
In a discussion this week on VSiN PrimeTime, host Shaun King was talking about his beloved Bucs during a deep dive into the most interesting/intriguing NFL teams of 2023.
The Bucs checked in at No. 9, and King talked about how the Bucs bewilder him as he gathers information regularly to figure out why respected Vegas oddsmakers think Tampa Bay is a hot garbage club in a bad division.
“Still in research mode with Tampa. I’ve got boots in the ground there in Tampa; every practice, I’m getting reports,” King said. “Because I think if what I think is true, there’s tremendous [betting] value with Tampa. But I’m also trying to really get a grasp on why this win total is as low as it is [at] 6 1/2, specifically because of the division the Bucs are in. The NFC South is, let’s be fair, the worst division in the NFC this year.”
King is a big fan of running back Rachaad White, Carlton Davis and others, and King recited the many big-name talents on the Bucs’ roster. He admitted to thinking oddsmakers would have installed the Bucs as the NFC South betting favorite with a win-total line at 9. But that didn’t happen.
Still, King says he can’t endorse the Bucs yet as a slam dunk “over” wager at 6 1/2 wins. He’s trying to figure out what Vegas is or isn’t seeing.
Crystal clear to King, however, is that there is no quarterback competition in Tampa.
Joe was most intrigued by that because King said he’s getting those daily reports from the practice happenings at One Buc Palace.
“Kyle Trask stinks,” King lectured to his VSiN co-host.
“Listen, if Kyle Trask had done anything in practice during his two years backing up Tom Brady, Tampa doesn’t go out and sign Baker Mayfield. He’d have had to have been terrible in practice. Because when you draft a quarterback second round, you want to be right. Jason Licht wants that pick to pan out.”
The Bucs wanted Trask to deliver a Tom Brady-Jimmy Garoppolo handoff like was planned in New England years ago, King said, but it did not materialize for Tampa Bay.
King also went on to repeat what he said years ago: Trask was a bad draft pick.
Joe has great respect for King’s evaluations and has made that clear on these pages for at least a dozen years. So Joe felt a little badly for Trask upon hearing King say Trask “stinks.”
King thinks the Bucs are primed to be a winning team if Mayfield can just play decent football: “If Baker Mayfield is just average, why not?”
As for the “over” wager, Joe likes the Bucs. Every NFC South team won at least seven games last year. That’s a low bar for the Bucs’ talent level.

To be truthful, the Bucs should have signed Ryan or even Wentz if Traskfield looks that bad?

Was King a big Jameis and Freeman guy? If so, I take his opinion slightly more than a grain or two of salt.
Also, $4m is backup money. I don’t care who we signed, it needed to be affordable. And I’d rather take a chance on baker for $4m then paying Gabbert double?

Sometimes the best laid plans do not work out…Maybe that’s the case with Trask.
But I do tend to agree with Kings take…In the context that if Traskcan had showed anything worthy of a TB12 handoff in 2yrs, Baker is not targeted in FA to be in Tampa.
The FO would not have grabbed an Aphla off the street, unless they knew they had a Beta in clubhouse.

I didn’t want Trask coming out either. How many QBs have actually made it out of Florida? Like none. Same with Ohio St, USC, Michigan & Alabama. Those schools have been around forever & the only ones thatt came out of there that actually did something were Palmer, Brady, Starr, Namath & Theismann. Right now it still depends on Tua & Jones along with Fields, too!

We’re finally going to see him get meaningful snaps in camp, and preseason. We can than make an informed opinion. It’s such a stupid take saying why did they sign Baker if Trask was the guy. Maybe it was because he was the only guy. Why did the Chiefs sign Gabbert when they have Mahomes? Same reason, a team needs more than one QB. I’ll wait till I actually see him play before we say he stinks.

I’m pretty sure King is getting his info from the players themselves. I highly doubt he’s out there scouting. This is the same I’ve heard from several players no longer with the Bucs. Won’t say why they just shake their heads no way. Mayfield may not be the answer but from what I’ve heard it’s all in on him.

Not news. Anyone with common sense knows this by now. I was on board with the Trask pick but 2 years later and he hasn’t even progressed enough to be active on a game day roster, let alone be the back up.
When we have seen him in preseason, he is wildly inconsistent, doesn’t know how to scan the field, panics under pressure…
They hung onto him for one reason, he’s cheap.
It is real simple, next year they will go all in to draft a quarterback and if they keep Baker, its as a veteran back up. Trask will be gone.

Unfortunately for Trask, there are too many unknowns, and the team is not in a position to mess around and find out. If the team starts slowly, you better believe we will find out what life with Trask is about. Still dont think quarterback is the difference maker one way or another this season.

My only question is actually how could trask have showed anything in practice with Brady and gabbert in front of him. BA n Bowles wanted veterans backing up TB12 not a rookie or 2nd year player. Gabbert played for BA a knew his system. Clear it was a win now mode as we all know. Sorry king not agreeing until I see trask play with the 1st team in a meaningful game to make an observation of trask. Dude did great with lesser talent at Florida. Deff worth seeing what he can do with weapons proven weapons like ME13 CG14 n CO

All QBs in practice throw to every single WR, TE, and RB. It’s very seldom 11 on 11 or even 7 on 7. Yes, when the ACTUAL scrimmage is taking place they separate into the First, second, and third string. Most of it between QB and WR is just running routes.

Yeah , Kyle stinks sooooo bad , when Brady quit , I mean officially , and the Bucs had the opportunity to clean house , who did they show the door ? It wasn’t Kyle , it was Blaine Gabbert , Brady’s back up and number two, gone, now why in the world if Kyle was so bad did Gabbert get fired and they let Kyle stay? ( Gabbert got picked up by Kansas City by the way , so I guess it wasn’t because he was washed up), Hmmmm? I do believe there might be some anti-Trask rumors being spread, So yes , King is only repeating what he has been told about Kyle ,( from somebody , somewhere), not what he has seen himself, it might be a good idea for him to watch Kyle play before he passes judgement.

The only QB on the roster was Trask. Even if he was a practice savant the past 2 years and was dotting it up all over the field. If we didn’t sign half baked who would backup Trask. They had to sign someone else. The only guy we could afford was a journeyman QB

If it were me, I’d resign Hicks. If he can stay healthy he’s a force and he’s open up some salary cap. Plus Bowles and Canales know if Trask is trash. If that’s the case sign Wentz as well. I’m guessing they’re going over position by position to see how they can make the team better.

Harsh and incorrect. First, Joe referenced respect for Shaun King’s Bucs takes going back many, many years here on this site. Second, Joe knows King has strong relationships at One Buc Palace and isn’t one to make stuff up. Doesn’t mean he’s correct, but Joe knows that St. Pete-native King isn’t a blowhard and Joe knows King loves the Bucs and their fans deeply. –Joe
…but regardless, Baker will be handed the starting role, at beast win 40% of his games…and will be pulled around the 6 game mark.
That’s when we find out if Trask is good or bad.

It looked to me like Trask is picking up Canales offense pretty well. It is a lot different than anything he has seen before, so he will need time.
Baker seems to be doing Baker things, getting happy feet, and using a low release.
I hope King is man enough to eat his words in a few months. I’ll lend him some salt if it will help.

That take is missing logic. Even if Trask was a lock #1, you don’t go into the season with 1 QB. You find an experienced backup at a value… you find a Baker Mayfield.
Trask may or may not be any good, but saying he sucks because an NFL team added a 2nd QB is stupid. Does Mahomes suck because Gabbert signed there?

it was a HORRIBLE draft pick that might have cost us the super bowl. no idea what Licht was thinking going future QB there made no sense. didn’t he even trade up to do it? that being said, Trask’s gotta have something worthwhile in there somewhere because he was a monster against good SEC defenses. not enough to beat out baker with ease, or even ever maybe, but he doesn’t straight up suck. King was great at one thing, limiting mistakes. he almost sucked himself.

Its amazing to me that Jason Licht, BA Tom Chambers and Canales are so inept at evaluating QB talent and wanted to keep Trask around and give him a shot of being the starting QB. They could have drafted a QB or signed a legit starting QB but elected to bring in Mayfield as a backup.

The homers for the JW apologists and the Freemanites. That was painful, bc fans put a player before the team. Tom Brady was the only exception to the rule and we all saw how well it played out.

Either Mayfield succeeds or the Bucs will have a new starter next year. I think (hope) they’ll opt for a vet instead of a draft pick. They have a bad track record with rookies.
I see Trask as a career backup. (BTW, best job in the NFL.)

I do respect his opinions and his right on Trask not looking good in practice because we never would have signed Mayfield. That being said. I think Trask is a gamer I think when he gets his chance when we’re 1 and 6 ( I pray that doesn’t happen) we will finally get to see him in a live important game.

Steve K. How many sacks did Brady have or how many interceptions did he catch I’ll wait?? You see this is the stuff I be talking about you try to make 1 player the only reason why the bucs won . I guess Brad Johnson was the only reason why we won the super bowl in 2002 . Again the only thing that happened to Jamies, Josh Freeman, Shaun King, Venny Trestaverdey, Trent Dilfer they have one thing in common they were drafted to the bucs and now it looks like Kyle Trask is another victim of the bucs it’s just the truth. This team has never developed a quarterback the only thing they have done so far is ruined the careers of every quarterback they drafted and that’s a fact. And as for the Brady thing I will tell you this Brady helped the bucs win a championship just like Brad Johnson. But also no one knew Gronk and AB or Forunett was coming to the bucs and what happened when Gronk and AB left ? He played bad not every game but a lot of them and BL and Todd Bowles became the scapegoat. I have no confidence in this team developing a quarterback they have showed us time and time again they can’t do it. I would be stupid to draft a quarterback next year in first round. The best thing the bucs should do is build a power house defense and get a good running game going than you plug in a average or slightly above average quarterback and then we can win another Superbowl.

Looks like Joe Stirred the Pot.
With a 6 year career of 56.2 completion, 4566 yards, 27 Tds , 24 Int and a passer rating of 73.4? Shaun King is the last guy I would think could say someone else Stinks. Forgot to mention that Shaun had 12 Fumbles too. He dropped the ball on this one too and here’s why.
TB had enough faith in Trask to let Gabbert go to clear up Cap space. Gabbert was good enough to be Scooped up immediately by the reigning Super Bowl Champs.
Trask threw for 4300 yards and 43 Tds his senior year with 2 stud receivers. I am sure he will do just fine with Tampa Bays Receiving Corp.
Perhaps the article implying that King suffered 281 concussions in his NFL career has some merit.
Now there is one in the Room. Draft another unknown when you already have one? That would be Stupid.
TB got someone will experience on the Cheap. Bucs have two QB’s for under 6 million if Trask wins the job and under 10 million if Baker has a great year.

King the QB coach in college ? Only in one school @ USF. What that has to do with coaching in NFL ? What did he do in NFL? He was never offered a position in NFL based on his college experience. If college record is so important and counts then Trask should start and win most of his games in NFL.
This guy didn’t accomplish anything in NFL but playing only 34 games with inferior stats 14-10 record and threw almost as many picks as touch downs at 54% completions.
