“Shock The World”

June 18th, 2023

Not buying the Bucs.

Joe has written many times that whatever methods the Bucs use sell their NFL broadcast partners that Kyler Traskfield can lead the team to postseason glory, well, it is not resonating. At all.

Add the co-hosts of “Good Morning Football” to the list. And that includes Playoff Lenny, who filled in for regular co-host Peter Schrager last week.

Man, even Playoff Lenny doesn’t believe the Bucs will win the NFC South.

The gang decided to list each NFC team into one of four categories: “big dogs,” “hovering,” “to be determined,” and “shock the world.”

(Remember, it is List Season.)

The Bucs got thrown into the same pile as the Dixie Chicks and the Stinking Panthers: “shock the world.” That means they think it would be a shocking development if the Bucs won the NFC South or did anything in the playoffs.

The foursome didn’t really detail their opinions, but it’s safe to guess they don’t believe in Kyler Traskfield. Playoff Lenny said he was buying the slimy Saints because he knows how good their defense is.

Co-host Jamie Erdahl gave the slimy Saints the edge because of both the defense and Derek Carr at quarterback. Erdahl admitted she doesn’t like any NFC South teams. About the Bucs, she sighed and said, “Shock the world.”

That’s odd. I give the Bucs the edge, in the NFC South.

Its ridiculous to think a rookie can win the NFC South. And Trask is still a rookie due to dumbass coaching decisions.

We have a shot at winning this division the Falcons are lead by dismen ridder the Panthers have a rookie at the reins and the saints Derek carr us Baker Mayfield.people forget Baker lead his team to the playoffs and won a playoff game and almost beat the cheifs while Derek carr has never won a playoff game so in reality Baker Mayfield and Derek carr are the same level of talent.the bucs have a better team then the saints so we should win this division.

And now we have the qb coach of the Seahawks you know the guy who made geno Smith who he is today.

I think our defense is better than the rest in the south. That’s what’s going to give us the edge. A lot of people talk about bakers 1 good year in 20 when he took them to the playoffs won a game and almost beat the chiefs. Key word tho almost. That’s was several years ago know. Hard to say what we have in baker and trask. But we do know that we got 2 real studs at WR a up n coming TE and should have improvement among the O-line. I’m confident our defense will keep the games close. They did last year. Hopefully and again I know it’s the H word but hopefully our D improves. If that happens we should be at the top of the south

Currently I think the Bucs win 6-games. With Arians I’d think they win 9-games and probably take the NFC South. Good coaches matter, and with a veteran team that already knows the playbook, and putting Bowles back at DC where he’s a top tier coach, as opposed to HC where’s a bottom tier coach – anyways the domino effect is huge.

    Bucs win this division easily.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

If you don’t have a QB, you don’t have a chance.

Baker’s one good season was when he had the NFL’s best running game, an top tier offensive line, and a great defense.

Do we think all of those things are going to happen this year? If not, except a disaster. Also, as I’ve said all along, I’d much rather see Trask at QB. The team is going to stink regardless of if we have Mayfield or Trask at QB, so why not see what the young guy has since at least there is a chance he overperforms. With Baker, I just see a ton of batted balls in the future, along with a 6-11 record while also being one of the most boring to watch teams in the NFL.

  14. Brandon Says:

Lenny is a Saints fans, always has been and will be. Don’t care what he says. He’s upset the Bucs let him go. I’m upset that he somehow convinced the Bucs and Bucs fan that he was worth a contract in 2022. Bucs have best D in South, best WRs, and second best QB. This is a two team race – Bucs and Saints.

  15. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Go look at the film on Trask in last year’s preseason. There’s plenty available on yt including breakdowns. Trask looked like Brady-Lite. Accuracy, mechanics and release looked excellent. A couple of plays Trask tried to do too much, couple of plays backup oline got beat and he had no time to throw. That can be cleaned up.

It’s clear Trask has been working hard and if you are going to go to school on someone to emulate what made them successful – Tom Brady is the guy.

Do the Bucs know what they have? I don’t think they do. I’m a ham and egger and I can see potential there. I just don’t get why they would blow up that progression bringing in a guy like Baker who is going to become a problem if he doesn’t get the job. Mayfield will not handle clipboard responsibilities well. What’s going to happen to his career if Trask wins that job? He’s going to want out of Tampa just like last year. He holds teams hostage that way. Not a team player. “If I’m not starting then release me”.

Invest in a young player. Groom him for two seasons. See the improvements and think he’s ready. Not make him the successor and bring in a QB who will rage quit in a QB competition.

This is what frustrates me as a fan. It doesn’t seem like a competent approach to personnel management.

  16. Chris O Says:

Brandon – Bryce Young is about to own this division unfortunately.

  17. HC Grover Says:

The Bowles Miracle Bucs of 2023…..ROFL. Bowles will begone next yer and saving his job will not be an issue. Saving Bowles job is just an RX for losing long term.

    ==============================================

I agree with you both, I couldn’t care less what they say.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the offense struggles for at least the first half of the season after shuffling the O-line, adding some new pieces, and installing a new offense and new coordinator. But they’ll get better as the season goes on and they’ll be backed up by a Top 10 defense which also will continue to get better as the season goes on.

I don’t know whether or not we’ll win the division or not this season and not all that concerned about it. Licht hit a home run in the draft IMO and is building another championship team. But many of these guys need to be developed so we need to be patient.

The new OC looks promising and if he has a good year the Glazer’s need to make him an offer he can’t refuse so he stays on with the Bucs and turns down any head coaching jobs. It will benefit him as well as he’ll learn a lot from Bowles and the other coaches that he can bring with him when he does eventually take a job as HC.

My prediction: The Bucs will go deep into the playoffs both in 2024 and 2025.
For 2023 Bowles will do enough to keep his job as HC and silence most of the haters.

  21. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Jamie Erdahl is a Minnesota Girl, who said she thinks that the Vikings will have an easy time with us on opening day. Plus, we cut Lenny and he attended LSU, so is it any wonder they are against us ?

  22. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

HC Grover – that’s on point. Root of the problem here is they gave Bowles 5 years ensuring the commitment. Now they’re in between a rock and a hard place because they do not want to fire the guy after year two and commit to another contract with one in place already. If the Bucs have a rough season fans are going to demand that and make it tough not to do. They feel they can salvage the current contract by bringing in Mayfield to at least buy another year with Bowles. They’ve talked themselves into that and more I think and that’s we’re seeing a hard sell.

The potential (and likelihood IMO) is Mayfield ishes the bed necessitating a firing anyway and they lose a year developing Trask in the process. Then they have to get QB in the draft and start all over.

One bad decision begets another and so on. They should have given Bowles 3 years instead of 5 and then planned on extending after 2 if the team performed. But they didn’t and now they have to bet on Baker Mayfield coming off a terrible year to make this work because they fear Trask taking some lumps in his first year of getting live snaps.

So now we’ll wait and see how this all plays out. If they start Mayfield and he replicates 2022 in 2023 it’s just going to be another situation where they blew QB development. It seems to be a thing with this team.

My takeaways. Lenny was very weak on his segments with GMF.
    Watched him two days.

He seems like a fine guy just not good on TV. His takes were very simplistic.

Had a nice sequence showing him where he was missing an audible called by Brady. Could not even understand on that play what he was describing. Again, bad on TV.

  24. stpetebucfan Says:

I’m LOVING all the national negativity! LMAO I’m on board for all this chatter it’s the silly season after all and we don’t have much “reality” to talk about yet. As Joe points out underwear football doesn’t tell much and we’ve all seen the looks like Tarzan plays like Jane players before.

Last season the Bucs were picked to win 12 games. How did that work out. You can’t lay it all on Bowles/Leftwich and coaches. TB was a vet..he was the one who missed a LOT of preseason prep and he was the one who looked like he was sleep walking through much of the season perhaps because of his failing marriage. But certainly it’s not Brady’s fault either…it was a combination of EVERYTHING…injuries to important players especially on the OL where the heart went down with Jensen and Donovan was never healthy.

Perhaps…nah I AM the cockeyed optimist but I view last season as the perfect storm. Hopefully the Bucs cashed in on their bad luck last season and this year will be better.

Notice much fewer former players are blasting Mayfield…nobody really knows about Trask he has no record to go on. I’ve read more than one NFL former player including a couple of QB’s be very positive about Mayfield.

AGAIN…remember SF last year…starting savior draft pick QB goes down…experienced vet comes in and then Garrapolo goes down which means Mr. Irrelavant Brock Purdy takes over an he too wins!

It’s not impossible that Trask could be a talented NFL QB and so can Mayfield!!!
These are not mutually exclusive. But nobody wants to dream here!!! More fun to belittle coaches and players and slam the Bucs chances. That’s ok since JBF keeps a nice record of these posts and some enterprising JBFer will be sure to go through them IF the Bucs exceed expectations.

  27. Bucsfan13 Says:

The Bucs do not have the best defense in the NFC South. I give that edge to the Saints. They have a top five defense in the league. I’m not high on Carr, but he’s better than Dalton.

  28. Dreambig Says:

All of you guys predicting the Bucs will will the decision or go deep in the playoffs are forgetting that Bowles is the head coach. At this point, his resume speaks for itself.

  29. shankasorous Says:

So they mentioned neither Trask nor Mayfield, yet Joe determined that they meant both Trask and Mayfield. Got it.

  30. steele Says:

Early progs are all meaningless, as you know. But based on history, I agree with Dreambig. Barring Rah Rah Canales genius and Kyler Traskfield hall of fame greatness (anything is possible), we are talking Bowles Ball. Which by itself should leave you skeptical.

However, Bowles’ skin may be saved because the division is so awful, even a crap season like last year may still get the Bucs to the p-p-p-playoffs. Mediocre, parity. Not a great QB anywhere to be found. Derek Carr the perennial loser? Please.

There are so many unknown factors right now, there’s nothing to lose. Transition season in any case. Enjoy the ride, boys.

  31. Joe Says:

So they mentioned neither Trask nor Mayfield, yet Joe determined that they meant both Trask and Mayfield. Got it.

You thought they were talking about John Wolford?

  32. Marine Buc Says:

The Bucs have a pretty weak schedule with the exception of SF and Buffalo away and the Eagles at home.

The NFC North is weak and we play them. The NFC South is still a weak division and the Titans, Jags and Indy are all beatable opponents.

I believe the Bucs will win @ 7 games. But – IF they get lucky and win a few close games they could win 10+ games…

  33. stpetebucfan Says:

“At this point, his resume speaks for itself.”

Not really Dream. Depends on your viewpoint and perhaps some preconceived notions.

So technically Todd Bowles is a coach who not only reached the playoffs with the Bucs but barely missed his rookie season with the Jets winning 10. So what has the Jets record been since Bowles left? It’s gone steadily downhill from Bowles last 5-11 drop to 4-12 “improve” to 7-9 and then go 2-14, 4-13, and “improving” to 7-10.

IE Todd Bowles was the LAST COACH IN NEW YORK JET’S HISTORY TO POST A WINNING RECORD!!!

So perhaps you could brush up on your “listening” skills when it comes to what records are speaking.

We can all debate this crap for awhile longer but eventually the season will start and we’ll see what happens!

  34. Cobraboy Says:

Expect nothing and you won’t be disappointed.

spbf: Radio Morris went 10-6 with the Bucs and cratered the Bucs thereafter. Like Bowlers did with the Jets.

  35. kyle Says:

jamie is a beauty!! id love to get my hands on her..haha

  36. SOEbuc Says:

Whoa! They have no clue either?! No way.

  37. stpetebucfan Says:

Cobra you suggest my point for me.

Radio Morris was a victim of the ManU purchase by the Glazers. They pulled it off and so kudos to the Glazer family but they were horribly overleveraged and the economic dip really put the squeeze on them and it was the Buc’s budget that suffered for a few years. The Glazers did the right thing as soon as they solidified their ManU position and started investing in the Bucs again.

I do not hold Morris anymore responsible for his “collapse” than I do Bowles for the Jets collapse. This year will give us a better idea whether Bowles can coach.

I’m not suggesting that either of them has “accomplished” a bunch but I wouldn’t be shocked to see either of both of them end up as successful HC’s.
Having said that I would be surprised either if they don’t.

Please explain to me what exactly “NFL broadcast partners” means and why the Bucs should be trying to convice them of anything. Serious question.

    Go Bucs!

  41. Colonel Angus Says:

It’ll come down to the team with the best defense.

  42. Defense Rules Says:

Colonel Angus … ‘It’ll come down to the team with the best defense.’

    Finally somebody gets it.

  43. Defense Rules Says:

NFC South has no offensive powerhouses. In 2021 the Bucs had the #2 ranked offense in the NFL, scoring 511 points … 30.1 PPG average. Now look at last year’s offenses in our division …

    o Bucs: 313 points scored … 18.4 PPG (#25 offense)
    o Saints: 330 points scored … 19.4 PPG (#22 offense)
    o Panthers: 347 points scored … 20.4 PPG (#20 offense)
    o Falcons: 365 points scored … 21.5 PPG (#15 offense)

All 4 teams had mediocre offenses last season, and none of them really made earth-shattering offensive improvements over this off-season. All 4 teams will have different QBs than who they had last season. All 4 teams look to be taking similar approaches to ‘retooling’ their offenses: more ground-and-pound (ie, a more ‘balanced’ attack?). Even their 2023 draft selections seem to have been ‘more balanced’ …

    o Bucs: 5 defense … 3 offense
    o Saints: 3 defense … 4 offense
    o Panthers: 2 defense … 3 offense
    o Falcons: 3 defense … 3 offense

Expectations? None of the NFC South offenses will be truly explosive & high-scoring; the team with the best defense will most likely prevail in winning the division.
