Todd Bowles Lands On CBS “Hot Seat” List

June 13th, 2023

Todd Bowles

Man, what irony for CBSSports.com to publish a feature on NFL coaches sitting on the proverbial hot seat just as their analysts team arrived at One Buc Palace to interview Todd Bowles and others.

Brandon Staley (Chargers), Kevin Stefanski (Browns), Ron Rivera (Commandos), Mike McCarthy (Cowboys), Dennis Allen (Saints) and Arthur Smith (Falcons) joined Bowles on the preseason naughty list.

Per national NFL analyst Cody Benjamin, those are the coaches with warm butts in June.

Interesting to Joe is four of those head coaches have been to the playoffs, and three have won playoff games (Stefanski, Rivera and McCarthy). Bowles and his NFC South counterparts are trying to end streaks of losing seasons at the helm.

Joe is confident Bowles knows he is on a hot seat. That’s just how the NFL works, and how Team Glazer traditionally has operated.

The best thing to cool Bowles’ buttocks would be to find his way to at least a 2-2 record at the Week 5 bye.

Bucs will be head coach shopping by week 8.

  2. WillieG Says:

I’m rooting for Bowles but after seeing him coach to not lose with his “no risk it, don’t want no biscuit” offensive philosophy, I’m thinking we will all looking forward to the draft by the end of October.

  3. SlyPirate Says:

Bowles sucked last year. No sugar coating. No excuses.

This is a new year. Todd is a smart (albeit stubborn) guy. He has a year under his belt, a dynamic run-first OC, a new OL, and a lot of speed on D. This is his team. Add to that, the NFCS is soft AF. Everything is lined up for the Bucs to outperform expectations.

I see good things for the Bucs (10-7) and I’m hoping for the best.

  4. Bobby M. Says:

I think if Arians was the HC….good shot at playoffs. Bowles just isn’t good at game management, he’s super conservative on offensive in a passing league….don’t have much faith in him.

  5. Joe in Michigan Says:

I saw some imbecile post earlier that the Bucs probably have “the worst QB, the worst LT, and the worst coach in the NFL”.

The Bucs will probably get competent QB play, Wirfs will probably be a top tier LT, and although I don’t consider Bowles a top shelf coach, the Bucs could win the division again with him, if things fall right.

    Sly Pirate

Agree with your assessment and ten wins seems possible to me as well. I agree with you reasons as well.

The one place I disagree…perhaps ever so slightly…”Bowles sucked last year. No sugar coating. No excuses.”

Agree with part one so I’ll accept your second part and not sugar coat it other than to say part three …”no excuses” should cover MOST of the Bucs coaches players and staff members. Last year was truly a TEAM disaster! You can start at the top but not just Bowles…Brady retired a year too late…Leftwich was lost all season long torn perhaps between two buddies with radically different offensive philosophies…and luck was not a a lady either….the OL was ruined by injuries starting of course with Jensen..but Donavan was never really healthy and the Wirfs played through some injuries as well.

  7. SteveK Says:

Super pumped for Todd and his vision of the team. His coaches and developing a stout defense. Cheers. Go Bucs!

  8. #99 the big fella Says:

This isn’t anything that we all didn’t know.. I am pulling for Todd Bowles.
I hope he proves the negative Nancy’s wrong.

  9. All_da_way Says:

Honestly the biggest question mark on this team is not the lack of depth or obvious starters. TB has to prove he is going to be a better HC this year.

  10. Buc4evr Says:

Kind of crazy, I am no Todd Bowles fan, but as far as QB, the guy has nothing to work with and Jason did nothing to help him knowing TB12 was leaving.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

To borrow a quote from Captain Ivan Drago from Rocky IV – “If he dies – he dies”…

Todd Bowles is an effective defensive coordinator. If the Bucs can win 9-10 games and win the NFC South he deserves a raise…

If the team self-destructs and only wins 4-5 games he will probably walk the plank.

  12. Hodad Says:

How does the buffalo HC get a pass? All the talent, and hype every year. One of the best defenses, QB, although he’s a turnover machine, yet they come up short every year. Reminds me of when Dungey couldn’t get us over the top. That’s a SB or bust team. McDermott’s seat will be on fire if they get ousted without reaching a SB, and rightfully so.

  13. Tye Says:

NO SEAT should be hotter than Bowels!

  14. D-Rok Says:

David claimed victory over Goliath hours before the battle, and I hope Bowles has faith this year. He’s gonna need it.

  15. Infomeplease Says:

Until proven otherwise, TB is the weak link of this team!! I hope he proves me wrong! After last season, I don’t expect much from him.

  16. Mark2001 Says:

I mean, who really didn’t think he was on the hot seat?

  17. Duane Says:

His fate is in his hands. Two other coaches in the same division competing to keep their jobs, and he has a better roster. I dont think he is a leader of men, but I think he can buy some time if he can get the defense rolling and Canales gets the offense to score 22 pts.

  18. CleanHouse Says:

    He sucks

  19. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Not sure how much Bowles really cares ?
Remember, Jason Licht gave him a 5 year contract. Even if he is fired, the contract must be paid.
So, in effect, Bowles is a millionaire in waiting, no matter what, courtesy of Jason Licht.

  20. Fred McNeil Says:

Predicting bowles as on the hot seat doesn’t exactly take a Svengali.
I’m with the folks predicting 9 or 10 wins and NFCS supremacy and at least a wild card win.
Are biggest question marks are players who have been successful in the past. Baker and White have had NFL success already and both are in their prime. Both are seeking long term eight figure contracts. This is their only chance to avoid mediocrity. We haveLVD and Mike Evans looking to cement their chances at a gold jacket. We’ve got a ton of great players.
We also have Todd Bowles and his very last gasp to be a head coach. He only needs to stay out of the offence’s,way and make a few less bonehead mistakes.
You’ve got Canales who might not get another chance for a good many years.
Lots of people are getting their last or only chance.
I like our odds. 3-1 at the bye.

  21. chark Says:

Bowles is a good not great def coordinator and I dont believe any of the crap about Bowles getting his off coordinator. He would have picked Leftwich and all the coaches leftover from previous staff. Bowles had a shoe in easy team on cruise control to work with. Aside from the jensen injury and hainsey filled in acceptabaly. Honestly last years record was pretty much beyond worse case scenario. If someone who could see the future had posted on here before last season what actually transpired there would have been 100% unanimous disagreement . make no mistake last year was an absolute nitemare and he held the keys. He needs to win the division no matter what and win a playoff game. No more excuses! even if these expectations are difficult. Bowles is an infested wound that is about to get worse..sorry , nice guy though

  22. garro Says:

Winning solves alot of problems in the NFL.

    Go Bucs!

  23. Hodad Says:

Funny how all the experts say Tampa is now one of the worse rosters in the NFL without a starting QB, and are ranked 31st in the league, yet Bowles is on the hotseat?

  24. Thomas Edrington Says:

…And rightly so….should have been on it last year
