Baker Mayfield, Interceptions And Winning
July 11th, 2023So where are the haters for Josh Allen?
One thinkg that has surprised Joe since the Bucs signed Baker Mayfield is how much folks who type about the NFL for a living really just don’t like the guy. It seems so many cannot wait to dance on the man’s NFL grave. Joe is just about convinced Mayfield is more hated by #NFLMedia than Mr. Entertainment, Jameis Winston. No, really.
How many stories has Joe linked to that claim the Bucs will stink — some believe tank — solely because Mayfield is the quarterback?
Granted, some of these stories are genuine from analysts whoy believe Mayfield has been on a downward spiral the past two years and that there is a valid reason the Browns and the Stinking Panthers washed their hands of him. OK, fine.
Mayfield sure stoked the fires when he was terrible in Carolina. He did show signs of life when he got to Los Angeles, but no matter. His haters have come out of the woodwork this offseason.
Joe can only guess Mayfield has bruised fragile egos in #NFLMedia because he will easily fire back at questions he deems inappropriate.
And if interceptions truly are the work of the devil, how come Josh Allen gets a pass? He’s regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
Simply put, like Joe used to say about Jameis, if you are a gunslinger, you better have a defense to protect you. Unlike Allen, Mayfield has often played on rotten teams. You can get away with picks as long as your defense can stop the other team.
Just ask Terry Bradshaw, Fran Tarkenton, Joe Namath, John Elway, Drew Brees and Brett Favre.

Agreed. Until Allen reduces his turnovers the Bills will not get to the Super bowl. I didn’t think Brees was much of a pick thrower. I’m gonna have to revisit his stats.
July 11th, 2023 at 5:17 am
Some times people piss the sacred media off?!?!
Please Joe, say it aint so!
Remember Warren Sapp had half the media scared to go anywhere near him.
And they should have been. LOL
Go Bucs!
July 11th, 2023 at 5:59 am
Joe … ‘Bucs will stink — some think, tank — solely because Mayfield is the quarterback?’
WHY do you keep doing this to us Joe? Baker Mayfield is NOT the Bucs’ starting QB at the present time according to Jason Licht, Todd Bowles & Dave Canales. Until preseason commences and we see IF that’s fact or fiction by their actions, why not just take it at face value? We’ll know soon enough.
July 11th, 2023 at 6:20 am
Josh Allen, while not perfect…Wins…
And he wasn’t drafted #1 overall
July 11th, 2023 at 6:25 am
So where’s the haters for Josh Allen??? Are you kidding me Joe? Josh Allen is 52-25 in his career, he wins more than twice as much as he loses. Meanwhile Baker Mayfield career record is 33-39. Baker Mayfield played with the best running game, great defense, two all pro receivers, and still has a losing record because he sucks. Plus he runs his mouth like an arrogant prick. Don’t forget to mention the fact that Josh Allen scores more than twice as many touchdowns as he throws interceptions (138 touchdowns and 60 interceptions). Nobody cares how many interceptions you throw when you’re winning. And no way we will have a winning record at the end of the season with baker mayfield as our starting quarterback
July 11th, 2023 at 6:39 am
Buffalo, and Allen overrated. Always the favorite to make it to the SB, always the bridesmaid. If they don’t make it to the SB this season their coach will be fired.
July 11th, 2023 at 7:28 am
Terry Bradshaw threw near 25 picks per year in his heyday, and that was a 14 game season
July 11th, 2023 at 7:36 am
Beej, when 25 passing attempts was a lot!

Jamis threw 73 ints in his last 4 years with the Bucs.

Jamis threw 73 ints in his last 4 years with the Bucs.
And for 3 and a half of those seasons the Bucs had among the worst defenses in the NFL (one of which was nearly the worst defense in NFL history).
July 11th, 2023 at 7:56 am
@George R…
Jameis obviously has his flaws but even he’s better than Mayfield imho…Atleast he threw for a bunch more yards and TDs…An argument can also be made that Mayfield had a better supporting cast…Sure Jameis had Evans but had we built a running game around Jameis similar to what Mayfield had we probably would have won alot more games…
July 11th, 2023 at 8:00 am
Allen is so effective because he’s like a linebacker playing QB- the Bills’ coach tends to get exposed in big games.
July 11th, 2023 at 8:01 am
All Baker ever had to do was stop throwing interceptions and at least have a winning record. Would rather have Josh Allen, at least he wins games. Not a good comparison.
July 11th, 2023 at 8:08 am
The Baker will be demanding a lot of dough after this season. Mark my words
July 11th, 2023 at 8:17 am
Some of these articles have been hilarious to read, somebody needs camp to start a-sap and you can tell because apparently “this Joe” thinks Mayfield has “haters” because people are expressing their observations which when compared to reality that Baker Mayfield at best is a mid-tier NFL QB.
“Simply put, like Joe used to say about Jameis, if you are a gunslinger you better have a defense to protect you.”
LMAO, “if you’re a gunslinger you better wear a vest if you stink at gun slinging because you’ll probably get shot”
July 11th, 2023 at 8:25 am
Wombat, when you’re QB keeps giving the ball away it kinda makes your defense bad, don’t ya think?
July 11th, 2023 at 8:37 am
@Fishhawkbuc….
Would you be willing to bet on that??
July 11th, 2023 at 8:44 am
Joe, seriously you are comparing Josh Allen talents to Maybefield’s? You ask why no one questions JA interceptions, maybe you should ask yourself, how many times has Maybefield thrown for over 4k? How many times has Maybefield thrown for over 30 TD passes? If the answer to those questions is a big fat 0, then you know why folks see one as a damn good QB and the other as a bust.
July 11th, 2023 at 8:44 am
“Wombat, when you’re QB keeps giving the ball away it kinda makes your defense bad, don’t ya think?”
It’s largely taken for granted by causal fans how the offense and defense of a team function like a pair of hands, and you shouldn’t have to explain that an offense consistently turning the ball over kind of puts your defense back on the field prematurely with nothing to protect in terms of a dwindling deficit or a lead.
3 of 4 seasons with Bowles calling our defense we allowed just under 22 ppg, with the exception of the 2019 season where we allowed 28 ppg which is also the season with our most offensive turnovers. Any practical football mind would tell you that your offense is sabotaging your defenses ability to be great by gift wrapping extra possession by way of turnovers. Don’t ever let anybody tell you the offense giving the ball up means your defense needs to “play better” because that’s an idiot’s take.
July 11th, 2023 at 8:55 am
Maybe it is because Baker doesn’t have that country shucks attitude.
He can come off as arrogant, like it is all someone else’s fault, while it is his happy feet that cause it all to break down.
July 11th, 2023 at 9:32 am
Josh Allen is infinitely better than Mayfield. I would take him over Mayfield in a heartbeat if I had to choose between the two. If we had Allen, the media wouldn’t be so down on us.
July 11th, 2023 at 10:27 am
“Mayfield sure stoked the fires when he was terrible in Carolina.”
I have been watching Mayfield’s game film from his time in Carolina. It isn’t very pretty but he wasn’t getting much help. Their offensive line was pretty bad. They had crap TEs and crap WRs except Moore. They had two solid RBs but their running game wasn’t the issue.
I noticed a lot of blocked passes at the LOS. Seems to be 3-4 blocked passes per game and that is a bit concerning for me if Baker is our starter.
Other than that Mayfield played OK. The Panthers were in position to win their first two games but lost to Cleveland after a last second field goal and lost to NY by a field goal. Then they beat the Saints…
His game against the Cardinals was rough as he had 4 blocked passes and one of them was returned for a pick six. But he was 22 of 36 for 197yds and 1TD.
So Mayfield had issues but his supporting cast was weak and Carolina’s offense was horrible regardless of the QB last season.
If Mayfield is the starter over Trask our offensive coordinator has to do something to limit the number of blocked passes at the LOS. Bootlegs and rolling out the pocket will help.
July 11th, 2023 at 11:08 am
5 win season.
July 11th, 2023 at 11:19 am
When Mayfield left, the offense played better under PJ Walker and Sam Darnold. That was without arguably without the best RB in the league. The battled passes are a problem. I think it has to do with his slow release and the angle of his arm. Defenses can time it up pretty good. He’s also not good at creating good throwing lanes as a shorter QB. Brees was a master at it. He has the pocket awareness of Helen Keller. Some of the sacks he took were not on the OL. He also gets happy feet and will leave a clean pocket.
July 11th, 2023 at 11:47 am
“So Mayfield had issues but his supporting cast was weak and Carolina’s offense was horrible regardless of the QB last season.”
Mayfields’ play can make an OL look worse than it actually is because like Bucsfan13 just mentioned, his pocket awarness is sh*t and his footwork is unruly, meaning he’ll be meaning to climb the pocket, but will do so into the teeth of the pass rush that would otherwise near miss. Also, for anybody looking at past Mayfield film, pay attention to his feet when he’s delivering a pass as more often than not there will be some irregularity in his throwing motion because his feet aren’t set.

Jameis Winston is better than Baker Mayfield. Tampa couldn’t afford him though.

July 11th, 2023 at 12:08 pm
Agreed Nybuccguy, as much as we have made fun of Jameis he is still light years better than Traskfield. Take the under on this season.
July 11th, 2023 at 12:10 pm
Hey Joe your site is taking a big dump again…
And it stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 11th, 2023 at 12:22 pm
Mayfield isn’t the problem with this team as of today! IMO. Todd Bowles being a very poor head coach is, as of today. This may change! As of today that’s how I see things! I can’t wait till September!
July 11th, 2023 at 12:58 pm
Josh Allen played 77 games and Mayfield played in 58 over those 5 seasons. Makes those interceptions a little more common in my perception. Probably better to go by interceptions per attempt.
July 11th, 2023 at 1:07 pm
I believe the QB decision is up to which one can take coaching. Canales can maybe develop a QB (for once having someone who can). Bowles is depending on him. Bowles doesn’t believe he can find a DC better than he is, so he concentrates on that (I believe to the detriment of his HC duties). I just hope he is not the one who decides which QB is our starter.
Our first preseason game is exactly 30 days from now. I can hardly wait.
July 11th, 2023 at 1:23 pm
I think Dave Canales is a really good hire and could turn Baker Mayfield into the Bucs version of Drew Brees.

AnonymiusBuc76 write: “Josh Allen, while not perfect…Wins…”
Josh Allen had far better teams and receivers than Mayfield has had (an always injured OBJ and on his last wheels Jarvis Landry don’t even compare, folks).
Put Allen on the Woeful Browns team, the clearance sale Panthers team, or the everyone’s injured now Rams team from last year and I doubt “Josh Allen … wins”.
And, of course, in his 5 years in the league, Josh has always had just one head coach and two offensive coordinators, so getting to know the offense was pretty easy for him. In five years playing, Mayfield has had 7 head coaches (make it eight now with Bowles) and 5 offensive coordinators (six, now that he’s on the Bucs).
July 11th, 2023 at 4:35 pm
PLEASE don’t say that Baker Mayfield had a “great” defense when he played with the Browns because it makes me want to throw up! I get it. Some people just hate Mayfield and many are on this site. Get over it because he’s going to be your QB this season and he’s going to prove his haters wrong. Go Bucs.

July 11th, 2023 at 5:56 pm
@ScottyMack
I respectfully disagree; if the Browns had Josh Allen instead of Mayfield they would have definitely won more games and Allen would still be there (unlike Baker)..Have you seen Josh Allen run with the Football… He’s a beast…Allen is one of the toughest QBs to sack and when the play breaks down he still can make something out if nothing…
On the other hand, if Baker isn’t getting the ball slapped back in his face or throwing picks he’s folding up like a lawn chair taking a sack…
Don’t makes excuses for Mayfield; it’s a bad look and a waste of time…He had 4 coaches in Cleveland and got at least two of them fired…
July 11th, 2023 at 6:35 pm
Respectively ABUC76, you don’t know what you’re talking about… and that really is a bad look. You sound like the kind of guy who looks strictly at stats and doesn’t understand all the elements that makes a QB successful. Go Bucs.

Nothing like people wigging out over a software code. smh
July 11th, 2023 at 8:13 pm
Kudos to Jack Clark way upthread, who correctly noted that while the INTs are always bad, if you throw enough TDs you can overcome this issue. Specifically, if you throw more than TWICE as many TDs as INTs, I think that qualifies as GOOD QB play. It doesn’t matter if you have that “it” factor or moxie.
So for Baker Mayfield, after the last five seasons, he has 102 TDs and 64 INTs, and only ONE season out of his five with better than a 2:1 ratio.
For Matt Ryan, his last five seasons show 121 TDs and 57 INTs, with TWO of his last five seasons with better than a 2:1 ratio. Unfortunately for him, his TD% has fallen from 5.8% down to 3.0%, as his skills decline.
For Josh Allen, his last five seasons show 138 TDs and 60 INTs, with FOUR of his first five seasons in the league with better than a 2:1 ratio. His TD% is also an excellent 5.4% compared with Mayfield’s 4.5%, which has also declined over the last two years.
tickrdr
BTW: Jameis Winston has only had ONE season out of 8 where he had a better than 2:1 TD/INT ratio, and that was only for seven games.
BTW2: Of the 14 teams that made the NFL playoffs last year, all but one had a TD/INT ratio greater than 2:1 for the year.
July 11th, 2023 at 10:40 pm
Still talking about Jameis? Wow get over him. You love him more than brady
July 11th, 2023 at 10:41 pm
@WyomingJoe…
I’ve seen enough of Baker Mayfield to know he’s not very good sir…Forget the stats; why is on his 4th team in 6 yrs? I’ll wait for the next excuse…
July 12th, 2023 at 10:37 am
Include fumbles in that number, Joe.

Nybuccguy Says:
July 11th, 2023 at 12:02 pm

Ironically true.
Also, Joe…the number of games matters. Look at their average number of picks per game played.
July 12th, 2023 at 11:26 am
Perhaps it has to do with the fact that Josh Allen has thrown 138 TDs to his 60 INTs (that’s more than a 2:1 ratio) while Baker has only thrown 102 TDs to his 64 INTs (less than 2:1 ratio).
Additionally, Allen has scored another 38 TDs with his legs. Baker has run for 6.
So in totality, including fumbles:
Josh: 176 touchdowns, 71 turnovers
Baker: 108 touchdowns, 67 turnovers
I think most people would take 4 additional turnovers if it came with 68 more touchdowns…

I guess some people just don’t get it.
I wonder how many QBs have had stellar stats when every single year of their career, they (and their entire team) have had a brand new offensive system to learn. Surely, that affects an offense, QB included (if not especially).
Of course, this year, the entire Bucs offense is in the same boat that Baker has been in each year of his entire career. Brand new offense to learn from a brand new coach. That, more than the QB, could have a whole lot to do with how poorly the Bucs offense looks this year (hopefully, that’s not the case). That’s a whole lot of moving pieces that need to remember where to go a what to do as one cohesive unit.
