Offense Responding Well To Baker Mayfield

June 7th, 2023

Baker Mayfield

A young man watching Baker Mayfield through every spring practice checked in yesterday at One Buc Palace.

Edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is hoping for big things for himself and the Tampa Bay defense in his third Bucs season, but he’s also keeping an eye on the offense.

Tryon-Shoyinka was asked yesterday (not by Joe) what stands out to him about Mayfield.

“His leadership. He has confidence. He walks with the confidence,” Tryon-Shoyinka replied. “The offense has been responding well to him. So it’s just been fun to watch.”

Another QB question was hurled at Tryon-Shoyinka. So what makes Mayfield, tough?

“He’s experienced. He knows what defenses are doing before the play,” Tryon-Shoyinka answered. “He has that experience so you can’t just fool him with a shell defense; he’ll throw it to the open spot every time. …Been pretty impressed so far.”

For those wondering, Tryon-Shoyinka didn’t mention competing Kyle Trask and was not asked about him.

Joe is glad to hear the positive Mayfield review on leadership and reading defenses. He will need both those traits if he is to lead the Bucs to victory on the road in Minnesota — in 95 short days.

    Cautious Optimism

We should root for Baker and hope he has a great year, but don’t be too disappointed if it doesn’t pan out. This is supposed to be our down year. Baker is a dark horse chance to be surprisingly good. If he is good, the Bucs are a 1-2 years ahead of schedule.

I feel like the Bucs are a mix between the 2019 or 2020 Eagles. It’s either gonna be mediocre or disastrous before they try to draft a franchise QB and a new coach is hired… Unless Baker or Trask show up in a majorly unexpected way.

P.T. Barnum said it, “there is a sucker born every minute”.

I don’t know if Mayfly can fly or if his confidence will turn into toxic arrogance.

Maybe he will actually fly, but I still think Trask has more upside, a better skill set to keep the chains moving downfield.

Que the triggered Kyle Trask fan club in 3….2…..1

  6. ATLBuc Says:

If you would have asked about Kyle, Trask, he would’ve said even better things.

JTS need to focus n worry bout his own play n performance than worrying about others. He’s played like a rookie in back to back seasons, n from the looks of things, he’s stayed away from the weight room during off season, something he seriously need to work on. He mentioned yesterday that he’d love to get an int. however, if he continue to swat down passes right in his bread basket then he’ll never get an int, geez. I’m sorry but JTS is too fragile, passive n soft, therefore, I’m all in on Ya Ya Diaby contrary to JTS Year in Year out potential, which does not win games or make plays i.e., OJ Howard, JDarden, Logan Hall, KTrask, etc. Out with the old n in with the new.

If the OL comes together, the offense will be just fine! If not, a repeat nightmare! We’ll find out soon enough!

  9. ATLBuc Says:

the national media is killing Mayfield and the local media is killing Trask!

  10. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Maybe JTS should worry about JTS and his responsibilities. Not going to really take what he says on anything as gospel until he proves himself.

  11. Hodad Says:

I’m pulling for Trask, but not at the expense of Mayfield. If he’s the better QB, so be it, go Bucs. Sounds like Mayfield will start, but it’s a long season. This debate won’t end anytime soon.

  12. K_bassuka Says:

But the NFL knows he doesn’t know how to read defenses though. That’s why he be running for his life most of the time and throwing picks.

    Barker is a bust!

  13. shankasorous Says:

One bust talking about another bust.

  14. shankasorous Says:

So a third-year second-round bust linebacker is Joe’s new go-to guy on quarterbacks? Bwahahahaha.

  15. geno711 Says:

I will go with the local media over the national media anytime when discussing the Bucs.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

This QB “competition” was over before it started. There’s a 0% chance that Mayfield isn’t the opening day starter.

  17. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

WELL, I’VE ALWAYS LIKED BAKER MAYFIELD SINCE HIS OKLAHOMA DAYS..HIS EXPERIENCE WILL PROBABLY WHAT WINS HIM THE JOB..BUT, I FEEL KYLE TRASK IS UNDERATED BECAUSE OF HIS LACK OF PLAYING TIME..THIS IS GOING TO BE A HARD FOUGHT COMPETITION & REGARDLESS OF WHO STARTS THE 1ST GAME, THE OTHER WILL BE READY TO TAKE OVER AT ANY TIME..DAVE CANALES IS VERY SMART & STRATEGIC IN RUNNING THIS COMPETITION FOR THIS REASON ALONE..BEING A HARDCORE GATORS & BUCCANEERS FAN, I’M ECSTATIC THAT TRASK IS FINALLY GETTING HIS CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF !..I HONESTLY HATE TO SEE EITHER ONE LOSE THE COMPETITION, BECAUSE I BELIEVE THEY CAN BOTH BE GREAT QUARTERBACK’S UNDER DAVE CANALES SYSTEM..,BUT, IT’S NOW OR NEVER FOR BAKER AT AGE 28..TRASK IS BUT 25 BUT STILL UNPROVEN..AS I’VE SAID BEFORE, MAY THE BEST MAN WIN THE STARTING JOB..I CAN’T PICK MY FAVORITE CAUSE I LIKE & RESPECT BOTH MEN & THEIR GAMES..

  18. Tye Says:

Good for BM6… maybe he can parlay this into a winning season….

  19. Defense Rules Says:

JTS … ‘He (Mayfield) has that experience so you can’t just fool him with a shell defense; he’ll throw it to the open spot every time’.

Shell defense? really? Isn’t that kinda like saying that Baker can’t be fooled as long as no one’s trying to fool him? Can’t wait for the pads to come on. Oh wait, they’ve gotta go on vacation first though. I obviously spent my career in the wrong line of work.

  20. Mike Says:

The most recent videos I’ve seen of the QB’s throwing in practice make me feel like Trask is ready to compete. I am interested to see how both QB’s do in Pre-Season games.

  21. Bucsfan13 Says:

Yes, Defense Rules. Saying he can’t be fooled by a shell defense isn’t saying much. Has any player said anything bad about Mayfield or Trask? Or any of their other teammates. Put the pads on and see how Mayfield responds to some of Bowles’ exotic blitzes.

  22. garro Says:

    Rah Rah Baker!
JTS say anything about leading the team in missed tackles and QBs?
How many interviews did you have to comb through to get the info you wanted.

  23. Jorgito Brito Says:

I think the saints touched on it a little bit. The buccaneers should go with a two quarterback system. You running offense on what both quarterbacks do best. They’ve been splitting time why not do it in regular season games. This could be the future!

  24. J Says:

Not asking a lob ball question about Trask is just odd.
