Team Glazer And Practice Squad Questions

Team Glazer

It’s rare to get any behind-the-scenes whiff of Team Glazer involvement in football operations, so Joe had to share this new but old nugget.

Former Bucaneers rock star general manager Mark Dominik (2009-2013) is a co-host on SiriusXM NFL Radio and was talking about the process of raiding practice squads this week.

Minus the fine print, if a player is on a practice squad, he can be signed away by another team. The rule is designed to enhance the opportunties of a non-rostered player.

Dominik was talking about the NFL record set last year by James Houston of the Lions.

Houston was Detroit’s rookie edge rusher, a sixth-round pick who was cut last summer and placed on the Lions practice squad. The sneaky fast and undersized terror sat there more than half the season before getting called up to the Lions roster. Houston then exploded for eight sacks in his first six NFL games, a new league record.

Meanwhile, every NFL team could have signed him off Detroit’s practice squad.

That led Dominik to talk about how he was a pioneer a dozen years ago, along with other young GMs, in the movement to “steal” players off other teams’ practice squads by offering them fat contracts just to sit on the new team’s practice squad. Basically paying the guy much closer to real-roster money so he wouldn’t join the practice squad of the team that drafted and developed him all spring and summer.

In 2010, then-Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis had a public meltdown when the Bucs went there swooped in and dropped a fat check on Bengals rookie receiver Dezmon Briscoe.

Dominik recalled that time and noted Team Glazer chimed in for clarification.

“My owners were like, ‘Are we ok with what we’re doing because Marvin Lewis says we don’t do this?'” Dominik said of Team Glazer.

Joe loves hearing how Team Glazer was dialed in on nuanced matters of the practice squad. Some fans think Team Glazer only cares about ticket sales and eight-figure sponsorships.

Obviously, Dominik had done nothing wrong because the league wasn’t cracking down on the Bucs or other teams. Seattle and the Eagles were among the more aggressive clubs in that area, per Dominik.

This all got Joe thinking about what quarterback Team Glazer wants to win the Bucs’ current QB competition and how ownership will feel about that decision.

They picked Bowles so maybe they should stay out of picking quarterbacks. Just sayin’.

Not to change the subject, but has anyone else noticed how Brady and many others have talked about Baker but there has been no one giving rave reviews to Kyle Trask? Seems very, very telling, that and the fact that he hasn’t even improved enough to be active as a back up in two years.

  3. Ra'Shad Says:

    David,

Brady wanted a veteran backup behind him. So even if Trask improved behind the scenes, he still wasn’t going to be number 2. Well at least while Brady was here.

On a different note, did people see that the Redskins are saying they’d be OK with trading Chase Young…

I’m not Devin White basher, but it seems like both teams might be able to help each other out. Obviously Young is the more valuable player, as defensive lineman are always more valuable, so you throw in Logan Hall as well since he’d be on the bench.

I think you could sell this move to both teams. Regardless of what the low-IQ dullards say, White is a very valuable LB, and Hall still has his high pick cred. So Redskins fans can feel like they’re getting a nice return. For the Bucs, it’s an easy sell, you’re getting a big time defensive line pass rusher.

Chase Young and Vita Vea on the same line… that would be insane.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Ra’Shad – you think Brady cared about who was playing behind him? LOL! Also, can you kindly point me to the quote where he said he wanted a veteran backing him up? Of course you can’t, because it never happened.

The Glazers didn’t pick Bowles. Bowles was dropped into the laps of the Glazers when BA retired.

  8. firethecannons Says:

I like what ROD MUNCH said alot! lets do it!!

  9. BillyBucco Says:

Everyone knows Brady wanted a veteran.
Most good QBs do to keep them abreast of schematics.
Look at who Blaine is backing up now?
    Maholmes.

i’m with rod on this one…

pull the trigger and do it fast…

swap devin white out for chase young, and toss in what’s needed to get it done…even logan hall…he didn’t show much after maiming big red on day 2…

ship him out, we just drafted kancy and diabi…let’s roll…

chase young could be the move we need up front

  11. adam from ny Says:

or dw and joe sho for chase young ???

let’s make washington fairly happy and grab that guy

  12. shankasorous Says:

    @Rod Munch

You think Brady, after winning a Super Bowl with veteran Gabbert as his backup and returning for a second (and third) Super Bowl run, would tolerate a rookie disrupting what brought a ring? LMAO.

Also, to the extent you’re insinuating there was a competition between Trask and Gabbert, go back and read what Licht said recently about Licht being excited for Trask this season because Trask would be taking snaps with the ones FOR THE FIRST TIME.

By the way, you have not been posting much since Trask has been looking good in OTAs. Nervous much?

Riiiiight. The Glazers, who write the checks, have no say in who the head coach is and yet they are “dialed in on nuanced matters of the practice squad”? LMAO.

Thats how we got Donald Penn from the Vikings. Always wondered how in the hell he ever got on a practice squad in the first place. He was a solid left takle for us with plenty of in your face attitude. Made a Pro Bowl with us.

  15. Brandon Says:

Rod… Chase Young for White AND Logan Hall? In no part of the NFL world is this a good deal. You weaken two positions to strengthen one. Hall and White are expected to start. NFL teams NEVER give up on talented DL after one mediocre season. Chase Young has 9 sacks in three seasons… 1.5 in the last two. Hell, Hall in one season outproduced Young in both 2021 and 2022. Sure, he was productive in 2020 with 7.5 sacks… but that will be three years ago when the season starts.

I can’t believe the number of people that would be onboard with this lunacy.

  16. Brandon Says:

Dezmon Briscoe immediately came to mind as the guy that got a big contract to sit on our practice squad. He didn’t quite pan out for us but it was a good gamble.
