The Donald Penn Nightmare Is Over
July 30th, 2010The Glazers are spending money. The Glazers are spending money. The Glazers are spending money.
Joe’s doing his Paul Revere act here to announce that the Bucs will be signing Donald Penn to a long term deal. Krispy Kremes, orange soda and trans-fat laden food for everyone.
And Joe is smiling inside and laughing at all those Bucs fans and observers who thought Penn had no leverage. Hahahaha.
Penn had plenty of leverage, it seems. Jason LaCanfora, of NFL.com, is reporting the Bucs and Penn will sign a deal on Saturday.
The sides have come to terms on the major issues of a deal, but they’re still working out some language, according to the source. Both Penn and his agent, Rocky Arcineaux, were en route to Tampa on Friday night, and they will meet with Bucs officials Saturday, when the lineman is scheduled to sign the deal.
How bout that Team Glazer! Way to go. Way to do the right thing. No wonder Raheem The Dream isn’t nervous.
Kidding aside, Penn earned this money. He’s an excellent football player. Hopefully, he can become truly great in a Bucs uniform.
July 30th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
How sad, the much-anticipated Demar Dotson era is over before it started. Here’s hoping Penn can pass his physical!
July 30th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
Penn 1 Dom’s Manhood 0
July 30th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
After reading Steve Campbell’s article, this actually depresses me a little bit. Oh well, let’s hope he can keep his weight in check and improve in the passing game.
July 30th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
it’s hard to comment much about this yet without knowing the numbers involved. it had better be less money than what d. ferguson got. either way its good to have this debacle behind us now.
July 30th, 2010 at 8:35 pm
This is terrible news , considering it has already been determined by JimBuc and the other Kool-aid drinkers that Donald Penn SUCKS.
I was called an idiot for suggesting otherwise. Penn sucks, so this was a total waste of money …hehehehe 🙂
July 30th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
I’m very pleased to see that Penn has finally received a much deserved contract. But I agree, I hope he didn’t get d. ferguson money.
It’d nice if they can give Ruud a contract too, and have contract extension talks with Jackson and Joseph, as they will both be free agents next year. We can’t risk losing those guys. But at least we have one less guy to worry about now that we have Penn locked up!
July 30th, 2010 at 8:42 pm
Those cheap Glazer bastards!!
July 30th, 2010 at 8:49 pm
I hope its just a long contract, not an expensive one. It will be easier to trade Penn if he plays like he did last season with a cheaper contract.
July 30th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
If this happens it will be at least as poor a decision as the Clayton contract. Probability is people do not change much. He has clearly demonstrated the behavior we can expect from him. He will laugh all the way to the bank and be a very very large pain in the ass.
July 30th, 2010 at 9:00 pm
I really don’t care what they are paying him, as long as he will be there in training camp and for the season. I’m shocked, yet very happy that the owners opened up their wallets and did the right thing. Those of you who don’t think Penn’s a good tackle should be happy because you can now continue to complain, since (barring injury) you won’t get to see your superstar in the making Demar Dotson light it up this year. Now one more big signing to go….
July 30th, 2010 at 9:02 pm
I love the photo; Hear Ye Hear Ye!
July 30th, 2010 at 9:02 pm
Penn deserves whatever he gets in the long term deal.
July 30th, 2010 at 9:04 pm
I think Tampa2 must have loaned the Glazers some money!!! 🙂
July 30th, 2010 at 9:06 pm
MushFace — if all else fails just LIE. Please find any quote from me saying Pen sucks. Man, could your credibility be any lower.
Does anyone know what they key term was that was holding them back?
July 30th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
everybody just assumes that is was dominik who caved in to penn’s demands. could it possible be that penn wanted to avoid losing 16,000 dollars a day from here on out or that he actually wanted to get to work with the rest of his linemates?
July 30th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
crazy how some people still feel the need to post something critical/negative regarding the conclusion our biggest issue this offseason…sad
July 30th, 2010 at 9:28 pm
As someone who has been very critical of the Glazers and Dominik, I applaud them for this. This is definitely a step in the right direction and my outlook, while still not all that rosy for this year, has definitely brightened a bit as the Glazers have opened the purse strings.
July 30th, 2010 at 9:29 pm
Joe, I thought you might have gone with “the new phone books are here, the new phone books are here . . . ” 🙂
July 30th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
of course it could have gotbucs, but this is not a very reasonable crowd.
One exception worth noting, from someone I usually disagree with. Well said lightning bug. Very fair.
July 30th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
Well said lightningBuc. By the way, my source was right about Penn signing Saturday! As I predicted on”McCoy may sign before Bradford”. We’ll have to see terms. Was wrong about McCoy signing today. They were close Wednesday, but his agents decided to wait for Berry and other.
July 30th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
Penn Sucks …..just when JimBuc finally convinced me that he wasn;t worth signing to a long-term deal , the Bucs went ahead and did it anyways.
Now we are stuck with a fat overrated Left tackle .
LOL
July 30th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
This just in Bradford gets over $70 million w/ $50 mil gauranteed. Lets get McCoy in camp right away boys!
July 30th, 2010 at 10:07 pm
Good for Penn and good for the Bucs. However, most of all good for Freeman. The Bucs need to fortify their O-line to protect Freeman. I am very happen for this signing.
July 30th, 2010 at 10:08 pm
Wait a minute. The Bucs can’t sign Penn to a long term deal JimBuc. CBACBACBACBACBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course the Bucs can sign players to long term deals. CBACBACBACBACBACBACBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let’s get McCoy in here now.
And Penn could not be fined!!!!!!!! Dear lord some of you people.
July 30th, 2010 at 10:16 pm
I sure hope Penn’s contract has a weight clause.I doubt Dom would sign him long term without one.Good call on the Penn signing Capt.
July 30th, 2010 at 10:19 pm
70 million for Bradford?Holy sh_t.
July 30th, 2010 at 10:47 pm
70 million for a football player?
Recession???? What recession????
July 30th, 2010 at 10:53 pm
As someone who has been critical of …well…everyone – let me say that I am pleasantly surprised that Penn & the Bucs have come to terms.
Personally I thought Dominik was going to be tougher and hold out. I’m glad to see that $ wasn’t the driving force in this instance.
The best thing about this:
TRAINING CAMP STARTS TOMORROW!!!
So now we can start disagring about football and not this GM/contract crap! 🙂
July 30th, 2010 at 10:54 pm
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come on everybody, we all can agree that this is a gonna make the season a lot more watchable…
Yes, eric, I realize that those are low expectations…
July 30th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
I would just like to point out that I have Zero Expectations about ANYTHING JimTard says, and this just proves it.
JimTard didn’t you say that Penn would just sign his tender and play for q contract next year? Didn’t you swear up and down that he had no leverage?
JimBuc, you are officially to be known as JimMoron.
YOU MORON!
July 30th, 2010 at 11:11 pm
OH, YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a miny version of Mirale on 31st street. Our own little christmas in July!
July 30th, 2010 at 11:46 pm
I think Mr. Donald delivered a pancake block on our GM!
July 30th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
IM NOT CRYING I JUST HAVE SOMETHING IN MY EYE!
July 31st, 2010 at 1:32 am
Well played Mr. Penn. You were able to fool Dom with all that imaginary leverage. I hope the NFL doesn’t get wind if this deal because they may invalidate it because nobody is suppose to re-sign players to long-term deals because of the CBA. 😉
All kidding aside, thanks Glazers for opening the checkbook. This was an important move. Now it can truely be all about #5.
…of course they could just turn around and trade him to the Cowboys! 🙂
July 31st, 2010 at 1:46 am
I wouldn’t mind if they traded him for draft picks.
July 31st, 2010 at 7:57 am
Lovin’ it! Freeman has to be breathing a sigh of relief.
July 31st, 2010 at 9:19 am
I cannot believe the level of two-faced backpeddling happening in this thread, lol.
I knew this would happen…maybe not the precise day, but pretty close to it. McCoy will be signed by Monday I think.
The truth is, very few of us predicted thissigning would take place so soon…now everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, lol. I can hardly wait to see the backpeddling in the media…who told us that there were NO negotations were even happening.
July 31st, 2010 at 9:33 am
Yeah; I’ll man up and say I was one of the people expecting Penn to sign his RFA tender. I thought it was a fair offer and I wouldn’t have blamed the Bucs on bit to make Penn prove he could keep the weight off and play to an elite level. It just cracks me up how so many fans on here are like I told you so. All of the fans crying cheap…cheap… have absolutely nothing to say. At least admit it was a positive move instead of bringing everyone down with your negative crap.
July 31st, 2010 at 9:35 am
That wasn’t directed at you Pete; I’ve read some of your posts and you were pretty positive something was going to get done.
July 31st, 2010 at 9:49 am
And yet, Capt. Tim said Monday that Penn would Sign today- tada! Great job by Mark gettin it done! Congrats, Donald, you’ve earned it! A great Day for the Bucs! And McCoy signing later today will make it even better! All Buc fans should be happy today!
July 31st, 2010 at 10:18 am
I am not here to say i told you so or anything, this is a move that had to be made. He is a young very talented player. If he was allowed to become a free gent he would have been gone. Joe i remember a article from a long time ago in which you mentioned a 5 or 6 game stretch last year where penn played against some of the top d ends in the league and played very very well. Could you repost it or tell me the name of the article so i could read it again. I am curious who the d ends were. I believe it was peppers, clay matthews, abraham and some other top guys. Anyway Good move glazers you have restored some faith from a longtime buc fan.
July 31st, 2010 at 10:29 am
@jarrett; @Joe
I would also be interested in at least a link to that article, Joe.
BTW, Joe, would it be possible to see a corrent photo of Penn in uniform so we can see how much weight he’s dropped? How it looks compared to last year?
July 31st, 2010 at 10:32 am
Nice prediction Mr. Captain.
July 31st, 2010 at 11:26 am
Penn did what was the right thing to do, missed the “first”day of camp and will be there the second day of camp. Like he has said if it were not for the CBA this would be a non-issue. Glad he is coming to camp mostly on time, and with him signed for a few more seasons.
Wonder if Penn watched any film of Dotson during OTAs and mini-camp, it might have made his choice swing either way….
Lets start building that unity and cohesion as a team…
50 million guaranteed…. for what? a QB who was hurt most of last college season… makes me feel bad for the poor guy….
July 31st, 2010 at 11:31 am
If Jimbuc’s credibility could get any lower – well it did. For weeks when the “haters”were advocating that Penn be signed the Jimbuc’s of the world were saying: “can’t happen b/c of the CBA, Penn has no leverage, Penn will fold, Dom has all the leverage, no RFA’s can be offered extensions in these uncertain economic times and on and on senselessly!!.
If anyone cares – please archives Jimbuc’s comments on Penn and RFA’s etc.
Well Jimbuc- how do you like them apples? Great job Donald, you deserve it, only problem – what about Barrett? Also deserving.
I also give the Glazerhouses some credit on this one, haven’t seen the deal yet if it has little guaranteed against injury then I may back off that a little.
July 31st, 2010 at 1:04 pm
Thomas,
I think we can all look back at some of the comments we’ve made (including you) and find some flaws in our thinking. At least JimBuc makes some valid points when stressing his arguement. Unlike some other people on here who everyone knows and tries to block out. Looking back on all the comments about Penn & McCoy I think the Captain was the closest to being right on the recent developments. He posted that he thought Penn would be signed to a new contract before training camp and he also posted that McCoy would not hold because of money or the Glazers. Sounds pretty close to what happened compared to what everyone else was expecting.
July 31st, 2010 at 1:07 pm
6 yr- 42 mil for Penn. 5 yr- 58 mil for McCoy is the word in he street
July 31st, 2010 at 1:42 pm
That’s a lot of guaranteed money just in those two signings!

Well Jimbuc- how do you like them apples? “””
..and that’s not all. In the “stats” thread, I goaded JimBuc and his followers into taking the position that Penn wasn’t even a good Tackle. Not to mention over-rated , fat , and undeserving of an extension. They took my bait hook , line , and sinker.
We were called “haters” for simply wanting the Bucs to reward one of thier best players with an extension. This will not be forgotten.
JimBuc truly has no credibility left.
August 1st, 2010 at 1:16 am
Where is JimBuc???
As he would say, Crickets!
