A+ Early Reviews For Bucs’ New Kicker
May 30th, 2023Back in March, head coach Todd Bowles got the big-leg kicker he sought to replace weak-footed kicker Ryan Succop.
McLaughlin landed in Tampa after a solid season with Indianapolis last season and a stint with the Browns.
It’s not quite June, but Bowles said today that he likes what he sees from his 27-year-old kicker.
“Very strong leg. Very strong leg. He’s been accurate out here,” Bowles said. “It’ll be interesting to see when the wind starts blowing because he [played last year] in a dowe, but he’s been very impressive so far.
McLaughlin, 27, converted 13-of-16 field goal attemps from 50 yards or more over the past two seasons. He struggled in the 40- to 49-yard range in 2021 but was improved from that distance last season, going 9-of-11.
Overall, McLaughlin converted 100 percent of his extra points and 83.3 percent of his field goal attemps in 2022.
Joe hopes McLaughlin can at least give the Bucs what he gave the Colts last season. With the various question marks on the Bucs, hopefully kicker isn’t added to the list.
To date, Succop, Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl kicker three seasons ago, is unemployed.

Pretty impressive numbers. That comment about how his numbers from 50+ yards were better than 40-49 yard range reminds me of my golf game…over swinging.

I assume one of the joes is still pissed this happened. succop was a hero in SB season but his leg strength was gone, even the year before. surprised we never gave borregales another chance

Licht should have spent a 2nd round pick for a kicker.

Robert we can never sleep when we are getting ready to try a field goal. It seems like it has always been an issue here. Hopefully this guy will be accurate and that big leg can help us win some games.

Having a kicker more accurate at distance is probably ideal for win strategy. If you miss a short kick, it sucks but the other team has bad or average field position. Miss long and the other team has great field position. Plus throw in the analytics that tell you to go for it rather than kick a FG in many of those short FG situations, this might actually be the right kicker. Force Bowles to go for it more in the red zone and go for the bonus FG points on distance.

Bowles is counting on 3’s

SB-LV I think your right in one sense. Bowles saw how many points were left off the board last year. Coming away with 3pts is better than punting. Unfortunately we were in that position quite a bit last year.

I like the 100% on extra points which no longer a gimme at 33 yards…
Pretty sure Succop missed at least 3 or 4 of those last year on top of being useless from 50+.
Very glad the Bucs decided to get younger and stronger (and cheaper) at Kicker.

Keep Succop on speed dial! And Todd! For the love of God stop putting these guys out there for impossily long field goals. Score some TDs!
