Chris Godwin Reviews The New Bucs Offensive Coordinator

May 23rd, 2023

Chris Godwin

It’s a new day in Tampa Bay with the ousting of Byron Leftwich and the end of the Bucco Bruce Arians influence on the offense.

Superstar Bucs receiver Chris Godwin opened up today about his new playcaller, Dave Canales. A brand new offense is in his hands and Godwin, who has been with the Bucs through the entire voluntary offseason program, served up his review of the Canales way.

“I like him. I really do,” Godwin said of Canales. “I think, you know, the first thing that really comes to mind is he’s a very smart guy. You can tell that he, No. 1, he really loves ball, but he really knows like what he wants to do in terms of installing offense and attacking defenses.

“And I think that really comes off in meetings. It comes off in how he delivers the messaging to guys in the meeting room and on the field. And I think the guys really respond well to that. You know, he’s not really like a yeller. He’s not trying to like cuss guys out. He’s not trying to like berate guys. He’s a teacher and he wants to effectively communicate that. And it’s been working so far. We had a really good first day and guys are flying around. The intensity’s high. It kind of felt like a training camp practice. So I think it’s going to be really cool watching this whole thing develop.”

Joe has spent 1-on-1 time with Canales and he’s certainly represents a ver fresh voice and approach from what the Bucs had previously.

Joe is not surprised Godwin is on board with the Canales way; Godwin is the ultimate company man. But Godwin’s tone of voice told Joe a strong respect for Canales has already been established among Bucs players. It’s a fantastic sign.

If he just believes in match-ups we are ahead of last season.

If he can exploit those match-ups we might look better than last season, even without Brady.

  2. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Well put Mr. Godwin!! Go Bucs!

“…he really knows like what he wants to do in terms of installing offense and attacking defenses…”

Let the record reflect, this was not the case with the guy game-planning and calling plays last season.

  4. Geno711 Says:

Seems like Godwin will be the spokesman all year long for the offense.
I wonder if there is intent to make him more the face of the offense this year.

What I want to see, is how quickly the offense is ready to play regular season games with the new offensive scheme.

There is one thing with practicing, but it seems to take most offensive and defensive units a few games into the regular season before they might start to not only understand a new system but make it flow when they have new coordinators. Something that could undermine a good start to our season.

1 The blockers up front have to adapt.
    2. The QB’s have to adapt.
    3. The running backs have to adapt.
    4. The receivers have to adapt.

Does anyone really think our offense will be hitting on all phases when the regular season starts? Time to have a head football coach require his offensive starters to play longer in the exhibition games than normal to develop that continuity.

That will work more than the QBs having dinner with the offensive lineman this offseason.

Good input thank you Joe for giving us the latest info on the Bucs. I love to see Godwin training and learning the new offense scheme. I honestly have not watched a lot of Baker Mayfield tape but did see his first year he was 11-5 with the Browns and brought them to the playoffs. I watched Kyle Trask play with the Gators and think it’s going to be an interesting new season on both sides of the ball. Go Bucs!!

Seems like Godwin didn’t like BA’s style of cussing folks out. He really emphasized that in his comments. Different stroke for different folks. Canales is more laid back than BA. LeSean McCoy mentioned how BA would cuss out Brady during film review.

  7. Scott Says:

Hopefully we can cut back on a lot of those option route miscues from the old offense. From what I’m hearing this will be a lot more simplified.

  8. Tim Says:

Ok look, I’m just going to say this, I’m sure some people won’t like it. Joe(s), when you put out your articles, you should be having someone doing a quick spell check. Some things look like bad spell check, other times it’s the difference between your and you’re kind of errors. Heck, I’d even do it myself. I fully understand that I’m picking nits, but a quick check makes your whole site look that much more professional. No offense meant.

  9. Hodad Says:

First thing about him is he’s really a very smart guy. Joe have you ever heard Godwin say that about Leftwich?

  10. Smashsquatch Says:

The upgrade at OC cannot be overstated. Sounds like Godwin & the Joes feel the same way.

  11. DoooshLaRue Says:

I think we can be certain that this OC will never utter the phrase “we do what we do” while sporting a flat brim.
    😃

LOL Craig, you took the words right out of my mouth.

@Tom, there’s five dedicated Bucs sites I regularly read, or try to read. JBF makes far fewer typos and confused facts than any of the other Bucs sites. They’re as good as any major news sites you’ll find. I’m not going to name names, but some of those guys contradict themselves or accidently screw up multiple stats all in the same hard to read paragraph. The Joes are pretty smooth and easy to read.

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

^^^^^. I used to do a lot of proof-reading years ago

  15. BillyBucco Says:

What a breath a fresh air this dude is.
How in the world was “We do what we do”, gonna figure anything out?

    Matchups, Matchups, Matchups.

Not Brady having like 10 options, but everyone knowing where the ball is going!!!

It doesn’t take as long for a team to hit it’s stride when you play this style either, so, I’m looking forward to scoring a lot on our opening drive.
