Limited Confidence In Baker Mayfield

May 22nd, 2023

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield.

Good news and bad news from a popular NFL Network personality when it comes to Baker Mayfield.

Former defensive back, kick returner and NFL scout Bucky Brooks pumped out a list of nine starting quarterbacks he feels are entering a make-or-break season for their careers.

First, the good news: Brooks believes Mayfield will be better than Desmond Ridder (Falcons) and Sam Howell (Commandos).

Now, the bad news: Brooks believes Ryan Tannehill will be better than Mayfield.

Brooks has Mayfield ranked No. 7 among quarterbacks facing a pivotal year.

Despite the flashes that have kept evaluators enamored with the former No. 1 overall pick, Mayfield’s résumé has been littered with inconsistent performances — a reason he’s landed on four teams over the last two years … With a 31-38 record as a starter, Mayfield has shown he can win with a stellar supporting cast, but the Buccaneers’ remade offense could expose his biggest flaws as a playmaker. Even with two of the best wideouts in the game (Mike Evans and Chris Godwin), the Buccaneers’ leaky offensive line could lead to a turnover party if the veteran spends most of his time running for his life outside of the pocket. Mayfield’s first order of business, though, will be winning the starting job …

Joe thinks Brooks has a valid point with the rebuilt/reshuffled Bucs offensive line. A lot of question marks there. More than what most people want to admit.

Joe has an open mind about Mayfield because he shined playing for Sean McVay in his brief stint with the Rams. Though no one outside of One Buc Palace knows what new offensive coordinator Dave Canales’ offense will look like in September, Canales is coming from a place that ran a similar offense to McVay’s.

So it’s reasonable to believe Mayfield won’t suck again in a like-minded offense.

He shined so much that they let him walk in free agency.

  2. HC Grover Says:

So it is almost June and nobody knows who will play where in the OL. That is a bad omen.

    ^^^^^^^^
Why is everything “OH NO, WE’RE DOOMED, THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!!!!” with you? The Bucs don’t have a real game until over 3 months from now, get a grip.

  4. #99 the big fella Says:

HC Grover, stop being a troll, I don’t think you have ever had anything nice to say..

  5. eric Says:

I’m shocked that not to many people see the reinvention of Baker!

  6. Elita Vita Says:

What are the odds that Bruce Arians would try to guide Baker along? I would think Canales would welcome the chance to learn as well. Would Bowles be opposed to the idea?

  7. Since76 Says:

How about letting the best GbIn preseason Start whoever that may be. Feels like Mcclown all over again……

  8. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Bucs need a QB that can step up and deliver deep strikes knowing he is going to be hit hard and fortunately they have one in Kyle Trask. There is a reason so many teams have parted ways with Baker.

  9. Since76 Says:

    QB Win ^^^

  10. Bucsmarley Says:

Joe still living on the mayfield bandwagon. Enough Joe please no more until it’s decided he’s the starter. Keep pushing the big lie like trumpsters

  11. NYbucsfan Says:

    Joe,
What are you referring to repeatedly about him shining with the Rams? His stats are not that good. He has one ok game. So, please share whit use what you continue to refer to.

  12. BBQBUC Says:

Given Mini Mayfield’s record of failure and likelihood of busting with the Bucs, the fact that the Bucs passed on both Will Levis and Hendon Hooker in the draft means one thing: the Bucs are comfortable with Kyke Trask.

If the Bucs were not comfortable with Trask, there is no way they pass on Levis and Hooker in the first two rounds of the draft AND fail to draft any quarterback in ANY round.

In fact, I am now convinced the Bucs intend to start Trask, and brought in Mayfield as his veteran backup.

  13. Rand Says:

Baker had one game out of 4 in LA he won and it happened to be nationally televised. He rose to the occasion for that 1 but sucked in the other 3. Trask should be the man had Licht’s plan succeeded but a monkey wrench was tossed in with Bowles taking over and fearing for his job.

  15. Alanbucsfan Says:

Both Trask and Mayfield have records of success and failure- do I need to remind Gator fans of LSU?
The key to success for either will be the OLine and running game.

That is patently absurd. There is literally no proof that he can do this at the NFL level. Just stop.

As for the ‘we didn’t draft another qb so they must like Trask’ idea – If the Bucs were actually comfortable with Trask, they wouldn’t have signed Mayfield. They would have handed him the job and there wouldn’t be a ‘competition’.

Most likely outcome? They both suck and the Bucs are drafting a QB next year for the new incoming coaching staff.

  17. R0n@Tampa Says:

I laugh at some of the predictions our fans throw out there. 4-13, fans that say we will win 5 games or 6 or 7. Do not respond to these low IQ fake fans. Ignore their posts. We must have chats with high IQ fans. Fans that see the talent and speed. Fans that see this team winning 12 games and making to the NFC title game or more year after year now. That is the high IQ fan.

  18. Knucknbuc Says:

Joe – he shined with the rams …. Looks up numbers huh? He was mediocre at best. What happened with the panthers? Why don’t you guys ever talk about his numbers then? They seemed to get better as soon as he left. Right now we have two backups at qb

  19. Steven007 Says:

” He’s Constipated” Grover with his daily dose of sunshine. But at least we’re giving him the attention he desperately craves.

Listen, more than usual. No one has any idea with this team will look like. I’m an optimistic fan so I think/ hope will look okay given the roster. And no, I don’t have my head in the sand. It’s not an all-star roster, but it’s certainly good enough to win if things go well. Primarily that means injuries and the unknown schemes coming together. At least offensively. I think we’ll be just fine on defense.

  20. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Bucs are +800 to win NFC South and they will.

  21. SOEbuc Says:

JBF and fans are clueless about anything with 111 days till week one, why do I care what this natty says about Baker and the Bucs just to stir up small time bs.

  22. Voice of Truth Says:

Maybe Baker can grab his one winning season as a starter and combine it with the HC one winning season as a HC

Then we can all just ignore the other 8 seasons where they both stunk up the joint…

Some of you are delusional thinking this combo is going to win anything except a ticket out of Tampa next year

  23. BBQBUC Says:

Stormy Says: “If the Bucs were actually comfortable with Trask, they wouldn’t have signed Mayfield.”

You mean the Bucs should go into the season with only one quarterback?

You mean the Bucs should not want a backup quarterback?

    LMAO.

  24. Lord Cornelius Says:

The O-line is a big “?” for sure. Like at every spot lol. Our best 2 pieces are either switching positions or coming off major injury.

We will have a lot of competition though I can’t remember having this much depth at OG. It will be shocking almost if we can’t field a solid interior O-line. RT is the main ???? since they are projecting off of one performance Goedeke had vs the Falcons

  25. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Oline: 4 out of 5 are new to their position on the Bucs- which had a poor Oline last year; the 5th has a bad wheel. RB: Basically going with what we had from last year, where the Bucs were last in the NFL in rushing. Yet, and I agree, the “key to the Bucs success will be the Oline and their running game”.

I am an optimistic Bucs fan, too. Yet these facts scream out the potential for disaster. Unfortunately, maybe we get 5 to 7 wins so we can draft in the middle of nowhere.

Would have made more sense to me to hand Trask the job and saved the money of signing Mayfield.

  26. BBQBUC Says:

Stormy is pithed off – and I mean PITHED OFF – the Bucs didn’t draft Will Levis or Hendon Hooker. Stormy had his comments all ready to go – how drafting Levis or Hooker meant Trask sucks – but the Bucs didn’t do as Stormy wanted. Boo hoo.

  27. gotbbucs Says:

I’m more worried about Dave Canales than I am about the offensive line. The good thing for him is that he’s following in the foot steps of a simpleton, the bad news is he could just as easily be the next Jeff Jagodzinski as opposed to the next Sean McVay.

  28. Dooley Says:

Talking as if Baker Mayfield is a sure thing at QB is borderline crazy to me, and the only reason people are propping him up is because seeing is believing to some so he’s presumed to be “better” than Trask because we haven’t seen much of Trask. Now, I’ve stated I’ve got no favorite in this race, but Kyle Trask in my opinion should be watching tape of Mayfield to gain a sense of where/what Baker struggles with and Trask working to make things Mayfield struggles with strong suits of his own development.

Mayfield has had a ton of passes batted down at the OL. Watch the tape from the Panthers-Cardinals game last season, I counted 6 passes knocked down at the LOS. Another slight against Mayfield is that he rattles easily in the pocket, but not only that he’s also guilty of making a single read with multiple route options unfolding in front of him and that’s partly why OBJs’ dad called him out on it a few years ago. Mayfield also has questionable pocket awareness and his tape has mutliple occasions of him climbing the pocket and essentially ending up in the past of the pass rush taking unnecessary sacks.

Just let the battle work itself out, and let us hope that this QB battle isn’t decided by injury or anything else, as there needs to be one QB amongst our own that should have to cope, process, and get through losing the QB battle and not checking out mentally

  29. garro Says:

    Good lord,
Thats allmost one third of the leagues starting QBs.

Come on man! If they all get canned what kind of football are we gonna have?
You think there are nine legit starters lurking in the draft or on somebodys practice squad to take their place?

  30. MX buc fan Says:

i think TB is in a better position at OC, that will make a big impact overall on the offence and not only the QB, truth is we are going to have a middle of the league offence with a top 10 D, not sure if that will get a playoff for TB but definitely TB is wining more than all the “experts” are predicting and will fight for that South title.

  31. Rayjay1122 Says:

Baker Mayfield for some reason reminds me of Jeff Garcia as far as size and skillset. I think with the right coaching and weapons that Baker can be a playoff caliber QB consistently but I think some major luck would have to fall his way to ever win the NFC much less a SB. IMO

  32. JR Says:

LOL He shine. lol hilarious. he played decent at best. dont tell us our EYES are lying. we watched the game too bruh. he played ok. nothing about his play was shining.

  33. Brazen Zebra Says:

    Math pop quiz today:
    Questionable QB + Questionable HC = ?
Yes, that’s the answer, a big question mark. Unknown. That’s why they play the game. I hope Baker does well. He has the talent. More TD passes as a rookie than Peyton Manning.

  34. Hodad Says:

All you need to remember about Joe, and QB’s is he was hot for Johnny Manziel also. I think the reality in the Buc’s building is they want Trask to be the guy, not Johnny, I mean Baker. What’s the difference? Joe, and the rest of the media have already counted Trask out of the picture. I don’t think Licht, and Bowles feel that way, but let’s see the first OTA before we assume Baker is already the guy. Assumtion is the mother of all F ups!

  35. BBQBUC Says:

    @ Hodad

Joe was bigly not just on Johnny Manziel but also Jameis Winston. Two of the biggest first-round quarterback busts in history.

  36. Crickett Baker Says:

There are some really dumb comments on here like going into the season with one QB. Geeze. With our cap situation, I was super pleased that we got a QB with as much potential as Baker. I still think it is great that we have at least two decent people at QB.

I am a little tired of articles about what these pundits say, over and over. I would sure like to see some articles on what any players would say. With 90 people playing right now, Joes, can’t you find a way to interview even one? I am sure it would be more uplifting than blather from these so-called experts when they hardly even know the team.

  37. Joe Says:

I am a little tired of articles about what these pundits say, over and over. I would sure like to see some articles on what any players would say.

Bucs players are not available until tomorrow when OTAs are open for media.

(Personally, Joe’s far more interested in pundits. Joe can predict what players will say, filled with cliches, too. At least pundits will try to be objective and honest.)

  38. DaLynchMob47 Says:

His blind side will be a wall with Wirfs and Feiler on that side. It’s the right side that had the questions I’m not worried about Wirfs making the transition . I know he will be fine , I think Goedke will show tho why he was drafted in the 2nd rd @ RT. Mauch if he is anything like what Marpet was his rookie year at RG than Mayfield will be just fine.

  39. BBQBUC Says:

For all you dummies who think Collapsing for Caleb will bring us a franchise quarterback, look at what Fox Sports found after doing some digging:

“There have been 38 quarterbacks drafted in the first round since 2011.

These 38 first round quarterbacks have made a total of 1,909 starts. Their record? 1034-1035-7. A losing record.

Only one of those 38 quarterbacks led their team to a Super Bowl victory: Patrick Mahomes.”

Yeah, except pundit opinions don’t matter. And “objective and honest” is kinda out the door in the “hot take” sports media we have today. Too many opinions, and nobody actually knows how things will actually turn out. It’s just empty yammering.

I’d rather hear from players, coaches, and the front office. At least those guys are in a position to affect the outcomes.

  42. DingleBerry Says:

Yeah Mayfield was really shining bright throwing for 170 yards, less and touchdown and half a pick per game…

  43. JonBucFan Says:

Ugh! This site is so exhausting!

  44. Buccaneerssucks Says:

Hey Baker Mayfield played for Cleveland and still has a career. If yall know anything know that

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Barring injury or suspension, I don’t believe there is any way Bowles does not hand the starting role to Mayfield…I do not believe he will go with an untested QB.

It’s a reality I’ve come to terms with…because our hardest games are the first few games…and even if the offensive line is good overall this year, it will take time for it to gel.

The guy behind center is going to take a lot of hits as a result. Mayfield may end up injured…but even if he doesn’t…he’s get sacked a lot and he will take too many chance resulting in turnovers.

I don’t really care where either of them went to college. I don’t watch it. But…Trask had a cooler head than Mayfield, and I want to see him get his shot by midseason at the latest.

I know Mayfield will lose a lot of games. It’s what he does.

  46. westernbuc Says:

Our o-line will be better by default because we have a QB who can run a play action.

  47. BuckeyeBuck Says:

All this crap about a QB elevating a team is just that; crap. Mahomes got drafted onto a playoff caliber team, Aaron Rodgers as well. Tom Brady looked like dog sh** playing for an average team last year. So did Lamar Jackson. The O-Line makes an offense

  48. BuckeyeBuck Says:

Jim McMahon and Joe Flacco have a SB ring. Dan Marino doesn’t. Think about that
