Fresh Insight On Calijah Kancey Having Zero Predraft “Top-30 Visits”
May 16th, 2023Cool nuggets inside the Buccaneers’ new in-house video feature focused on the NFL Draft.
Tampa Bay first-round pick Calijah Kancey, the University of Pittsburgh defensive tackle, did not have one NFL team call him for a “Top-30” visit. For those unaware, teams can have 30 college prospects visit their team headquarters prior to the draft.
Lots of fans do jumping jacks and get all hot in the pants when they learn a prospect visited their NFL team.
“Top-30 visits are more or less people you want to get to know down the line,” Todd Bowles said in the feature. “It’s not necessarily the top picks because some of them you’re not even going to be able to touch. It’s not uncommon that they don’t get visits.”
Kancey said he wasn’t sure whether no inivitations for a visit was a good or a bad thing. It seems he was getting mixed messages from those in his camp.
General manager Jason Licht said he wasn’t surprised Kancey wasn’t called in for a top-30 visit because he was very busy with about two-thirds on the league’s teams at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Cool perspective there from a lot of angles. Of course, it’s the NFL, so Joe isn’t sure what to believe. But Joe is darn glad Kancey is wearing pewter and red.

I think this draft will prove out well. I bet the players are all solid.

This was a great segment to watch on the Bucs site! Man, I dunno, this Kancey might be something. Hopefully we’ll know much more about him by game 1.

I like everything about this kid, so far. IF he can be what I think he can be, WOW.
May 16th, 2023 at 7:17 pm
How can no visits be a good thing?……Nevertheless, he’s ours now and he just may be a very solid pick.
May 16th, 2023 at 7:30 pm
I think a lot of teams didn’t think he could be a 3 down dt due to being 275-280
Let’s see how he does as a middleweight going against heavy weights
Dude a tuff as hell but he is giving up size

@Destin,
Yep, he a dawg tho. Got that football instinct.
Let’s hope.

He puts the D in dog D rock
But he is going up against some big boys

The visit thing wasn’t a big deal but him not being on some teams draft boards because of his size and 30 inch arms is real (1% percentile). It’s a boom or bust sort of pick. Was kind of surprised they were willing to go so risky with a pick 19 selection after the Hall selection. Let’s pray he translates to the NFL.
A lot of the good evaluators have nailed the analysis. He’s an crazy athlete with top notch technique and hand usage already. We will know if his size doesn’t translate very early on in the NFL. And if it doesn’t there’s’ nothing the Bucs can do. His arms won’t grow. Personally, I don’t mind the pick but I would’ve taken Jaxon Smith njigba. Sure fire pro bowl WR.

This draft will eventually end up producing at least 4 starters – Kancy, Mauch, Diaby, and Dennis. Hayes, Palmer, and Ramirez will be special team starters, UDAs will also produce – Banks, Merriweather, Jarret, Tucker, and Izien. Warner may make it as well.

Hoping this dude rocks out. Certainly has the athleticism..
If he doesnt end up panning out, especially if he’s got bad instincts or soemthing people will be calling him “can’t see”
May 16th, 2023 at 9:07 pm
That is kind of crazy that he had no top 30 visits. He was obviously a 1st round pick. A lot of teams are going to kick themselves for passing on him.

Hes too small

# 31 on everyone’s list…
# 19 in our hearts…

Capt tim. They said the same thing about sapp n brooks n lvd and drew Bree’s. It’s nice to have size but it’s not always the biggest reason for success

Last year it was soul crushing to watch this team on game day.
Myself, I look forward to watching this year’s team go out and try to compete regardless of the outcome.
May 16th, 2023 at 9:59 pm
If he is too small for the DL then try him as a LB
May 16th, 2023 at 10:02 pm
Top pick in the draft was a 5’10 QB that is neither a great scrambler nor has a great arm and we’re worried about Kancey? Dude is an electric athlete WITH great technique and work ethic. The floor is high on this guy and his ceiling is perennial all-pro.

Yawn… See you on the field….. Bitches

Yep, same here.
Bring the fresh.

A lot of teams use the pre-draft visits as a smokescreen on who they are interested in before the draft. How many people did the Bucs bring in that we drafted? Was it none?
May 16th, 2023 at 11:26 pm
Ghost of Tom Brady … good call on the total rookie starters. Great way to look at the draft.
Add Payne Durham to your list. That dude is huge, can catch, and he’s tough to bring down. He’ll challenge to start.

I could swear that somebody compared his measurable skills and size out of college to Aaron Donald
May 17th, 2023 at 2:50 am
He didn’t get any invites because he was busy?
Somebody enlighten me please.
May 17th, 2023 at 3:24 am
Well, I think we didn’t invite him for a visit because we already knew enough about him to want him. Simple.
May 17th, 2023 at 3:47 am
I’m going to show interest in you by not publicly showing interest you, sticking to the cloak and dagger methods of draft season could be our reason for not inviting Kancey on a Top 30. The most interesting observation to me was from Bowles, expressing how he remembered watching Kancey play high school ball and was on a team that defeated Bowles’ sons HS team.
It’s going to be hilarious watching a team respond to Kancey & Vea line up in a front as ILBs lol

Defense needed speed and athleticism and they hopefully got that in a big way with the additions of Kancey, YaYa and Dennis. Really excited about all 3 of those guys, especially YaYa. Mauch is no brainer. Palmer has a chance on the other side of the ball and I love Tucker at RB. Hopefully he is cleared and makes team. Time will tell but I really really really like what JL did.

It’s obvious that the majority on this site are pleased with the draft. (That’s a change!) Someone thinks we have at least four starters and a bunch of “upgraded” positions. Either we have an exceptional draft or everyone is drinking the Kool-aid.
May 17th, 2023 at 10:32 am
We got Vita Vea at #13.
We just got Kancey at #19.
Usually, top DT’s go in the top 10.
We are so lucky to get two DT’s outside of the top 10.
Lucky us!
Great value at #19.
Go Bucs!

Someone ask if the Bucs picked any of their top 30 visitors. The answer is kinda. They got Wr Trey Palmer as a UFA and he was a top 30.
I think the Bucs use their top 30 visits on players they liked but don’t think they’re going to draft. They want to know more about. Then In 3 or 4 years when they come back on the market they both will have familiarity. Or the player could knock their socks off and they could simply move him up their board.
