Don’t Expect Gerald McCoy Saturday

The countdown to the start of Bucs training camp continues. Saturday is scheduled to be the first day.
But looking across the NFL landscape, few first round draft picks have signed. Yet.
It’s a leverage tug-of-war between agents and owners. Agents are trying to get long-term deals for their clients. Cash-starved owners are trying to sign first round picks to shorter contracts.
This has not escaped the keen eyes of the TBO.com gang, specifically Anwar Richardson and Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune. In the latest TBO Bucs vlog, the duo discuss McCoy’s contract negotiations.
Just don’t expect him in camp for a few days.
First, Joe has to caution you: the audio in the vlog is not of a high quality so don’t go beating up your computer thinking it’s on the fritz. Second, is that some sort of Chad Pennington Jets shirt Richardson is wearing?

I would expect McCoy and most other first rounders signed and in camp by Monday. As long as Bradford signs Thursday or Friday that is.

Is it just me or are the Buccaneers with their league low 79 million dollar payroll CHEAP?
I think this will run deep into training camp. Oh, and nobody better start blaming McCoy.

WOW! That is a totally new take that no one has ever come up with before.
The Bucs are not the only team that hasn’t signed their 1st round pick but they were one of the first to sign their high second round pick. Bucnjim is right. As soon as Bradford signs you will see all the other picks fall into place.

Well Im not blaming McCoy, but it does bother me that he wont be in camp on time when he was so adament about talking about it after he was drafted. ” If warren sapp is there when i get to tampa i’ll sign on the dotted line’ well it seemed like his attitude changed when they did the interview recently and quoted him saying something about not signing until bradford does because he doesnt want to short change himself… Just saying… right after he got drafted he was questioned several times about getting to camp on time… and he made it seem like a non-issue. just kinda bothers me but i inderstand the current situation that the CBA is causing.

If the TBO hacks said it, it must be true. Those guys know everything. I don’t see it. Bradford should sign to day and GMC tomorrow. Suh and all the rest by Friday. Penn lost his pen and can’t sign.

My best friend is a starting NFL player who just signed his tend and bought a house down the street from me this offseason. We had several conversations recently about it. he told me there will NOT be a lockout next year. He said the bottom line is… this is not 90’s baseball or hockey… this is the NFL and it produces way to much revenue for a lot of business’s and taxes for local goverments. The owners and the players cant afford to not play. – thats not coming from the TBO

I agree with BigMac. Slotting is already happening and the differences in the contracts, year on year, is not significant enough to cause a holdout. I think McCoy will be in camp for 8-10% more than last years #3 got. (I suspect slightly heavier on SB as long term is considered ‘at risk’)

I think Bradford signs Thursday, McCoy and Suh sign Friday and everyone makes it to camp on time.

If your plan really is to build only through the draft , it might be a good idea to actually sign your best draft pick on time…
